CJ Abrams is so bad defensively

The Washington Nationals have been surprisingly solid this season, and CJ Abrams has been one of the stars of the show. The infielder is batting .284 with 29 home runs and 91 RBIs, and his fine performances earned him his second All-Star selection.

Primarily a shortstop, recent reports have suggested the Nats are considering playing Abrams at second base. Popular content page “Talkin’ Baseball” informed fans of the development, posting to X on Friday.

“Nationals are starting to move CJ Abrams from shortstop to second base,” the post was captioned.

Several fans appeared to be quite skeptical of the decision, citing CJ Abrams’ defensive limitations.

“He really should be DH he’s so bad defensively,” a fan wrote.

“Worth trying to keep him on the dirt and very interested to see how it goes but my hunch is that Abrams ends up in the outfield,” another fan commented.

“He’s the worst defender in the mlb and it’s not close,” another fan stated.

“This is a bad idea, but I said that about Lu Gar (Luis Garcia Jr.) moving to first. What do I know,” another fan replied.

“Shocked they’re doing this now instead of riding out the season,” another fan posted.

Washington Nationals manager talks about CJ Abrams’ transition into new role

Speaking to The Athletic’s Spencer Nusbaum on Friday, Washington Nationals manager Blake Butera talked about CJ Abrams’ transition into his new role, and what prompted the organization to make this decision.

“There is no perfect time to do this,” Butera said. “I think you can make an argument like, ‘Why didn’t we do it coming out of spring training?’ It’s like, well, then we’re not giving him a chance to show if he can do it or not. We think now is probably the best time because, one, we wanted CJ to be able to play shortstop.

“Especially with new coaches here and have some run to do that. But then also I think doing it now allows him a chance to, like, get some real feedback before the offseason to know what this looks like and what he’s going to have to really hone in on during the offseason to make 2027 better.”

Nasim Nunez is set to replace Abrams at shortstop.
