However, months ahead of the official start, FIFA has surprised many fans by cancelling 2,000 hotel bookings in Philadelphia, which is one of the host cities of the tournament.
While cancelling hotel bookings in such large numbers might sound concerning from the outside, in reality, it is nothing more than a standard practice by FIFA. But why exactly were the bookings cancelled? Take a look.
FIFA trims excess bookings after initial over-allocation
The governing body had initially reserved close to 10,000 hotel rooms in Philadelphia to accommodate match officials, staff, and technical personnel. However, after reviewing its final requirements, FIFA has released a portion of these bookings back into the market.

This form of overbooking is a common practice in mega-events, allowing organisers to avoid shortages during peak demand. As operational clarity improves closer to the tournament, excess inventory is routinely cancelled to match actual needs.
Move termed standard procedure, not a scale-down
FIFA has said that the cancellations should not be interpreted as a reduction in planning or scale. Instead, it is part of a structured process followed in the lead-up to major tournaments.

By initially blocking a higher number of rooms, organisers ensure flexibility in accommodating various contingencies, including late additions to staff and logistical teams. The latest round of cancellations reflects a transition from provisional planning to confirmed allocations.
Philadelphia hotels absorb short-term impact
The decision has had a noticeable impact on the city’s hospitality sector, particularly in central areas. According to Ed Grose, President and Chief Executive Officer of the Greater Philadelphia Hotel Association, four Centre City hotels were the most affected by the cancellations.
However, Grose clarified that the process was carried out within contractual agreements, with no penalties imposed on FIFA. While the development was not ideal for hotels, it does not significantly alter the broader business outlook tied to the tournament.

Fan demand expected to fill vacant inventory
Industry stakeholders remain optimistic that the released rooms will be quickly taken up by travelling fans. With the World Cup expected to draw large crowds from across the globe, demand for accommodation is likely to surge as match dates approach.
“These are rooms that will go back into the marketplace and be sold to fans,” Grose noted, indicating confidence in strong occupancy levels closer to the event.
Confederation of African Football has confirmed that referee Jean Ndala will still officiate the first leg of the CAF Champions League final in Pretoria despite recent controversies surrounding his appointment.
CAF announced that there will be no changes to the officiating team for the important match and said all match officials will perform their duties as planned.
Reports claimed that several complaints and petitions were sent to CAF over Ndala’s appointment after some of his controversial decisions during the Africa Cup of Nations.

However, CAF said the complaints were reviewed and later rejected.
The African football body added that it still has confidence in the refereeing crew ahead of the Champions League final in South Africa.
The decision is likely to continue causing discussions among football fans and stakeholders before the highly anticipated encounter.
Macklin Celebrini delivered a statement performance with a goal and three assists as Canada rolled to a 6-1 win over France in pre-tournament action at the IIHF world championship.

“I said to Motty that I had screwed him down between runs and he’s at his best free rolling off a fast tempo and that’s what that was,” Ryan said.
“It was a bit of a dogfight late and he’s good in the soft, so there was a lot of positives.
“He’s a handy horse and he won his first two and we had plans to go to Queensland, but he got crook.

However, Lagos responded strongly before halftime. Elisha Asuquo, who had been a constant threat but wasted several chances, finally levelled the score just before the break.
In the second half, Asuquo completed his brace with a decisive strike to seal victory for Lagos and send them into the final. His brilliant performance earned him the Man of the Match award, which was presented by Elder Paul Bassey after full time.

The tournament forms part of celebrations marking the seventh anniversary of Ibom Air, the Akwa Ibom State-owned airline, which began commercial operations on June 7, 2019.
As part of the anniversary programme, there will also be continued fan engagement activities around the stadium, showcasing Ibom Air’s growing support for sports development in the state.
After the tournament, Ibom Air will round off the celebrations with a special exhibition match against Akwa United FC on May 30, 2026, at the Uyo Township Stadium.
