» Cervical Vertigo Relief Stretches & Exercises

Cervical vertigo, also called cervicogenic dizziness, is a feeling of disorientation or unsteadiness caused by a neck injury or health condition that affects the neck. Here are some neck stretches & exercises that can help provide relief. Buy a worksheet with these Cervical Vertigo Stretches & Exercises at https://www.askdoctorjo.com/cervical-vertigo-worksheet

Starting off with some simple movements like cervical rotation and cervical sidebend are great to warm up the muscles around the neck and shoulder area.

Moving on to some stretches like upper trapezius stretch and levator scapulae stretch will help take pressure off the nerves in the neck area that might be causing vertigo symptoms.

Next, some simple isometric exercises like cervical sidebend and rotation are great ways to activate the muscles, but not make big movements that might cause pain or reproduce symptoms.

Finally chin tucks and scapular squeezes not only help loosen up the muscles in the neck and shoulder area, but they also help reset the muscles that are often overstretched from bad posture.

  2. How many times a day can you safely do this exercise regimen?

  3. I have had it for years!!!! Ruining my life! Dizzy 247! Seeing double vision! Been in 3 car crashes and sprained neck each time. Hit head on the windows each time.

  4. I've had problems for 14 years. I will do anything!

  5. Thank you for this video, I felled some tightens in my neck. Did the exercises and tightens is almost gone. Not only that, one mussel moved in my chest and I made a soft burping sound. I hope the mussel is stretched so that I don't make burping sounds again. I'll done those exercises in the coming week.

  6. This is amazing. Instant relieve after doing the stretches

  7. You are AWESOME. Question: I’ve had (cervical vertigo) before. After an MRI showed stenosis / bulging disc, etc), doctor recommended PT. The morning after my first PT session, I woke up with the vertigo, could barely sit up in bed. It went away gradually, also occasionally used meclizine for relief. That was a couple years ago. Two days ago, I was experiencing some cervical discomfort and tried your exercises. Same thing: Next day, I woke up with pronounced vertigo again. Is it normal for the start of a course of cervical PT to (initially) bring on some vertigo? And could continuation of PT relieve it? I know that’s a long question, and thank you!

  8. Does anyone get fleeting feeling of nausea during their cervical pain (may be just for seconds)

  15. My issues started w shoulder blade pain; it literally felt like I must have had a tumor under my shoulder blade. Nothing helped. Then the neck issues started; then intermittent vertigo. After years of pain, the vertigo coming and going; this bout has been awful; fell into a bookshelf after a yoga class. I thought maybe my BP was low (it was a bit). Then the vertigo continued. Today was a bad day. Those scapular tightening exercises were absolutely perfect. The isometric exercises will be perfect to add to the stretches I’m already doing. Thank goodness for you!!!❤

  16. I wonder if this is my problem. On February 9, 2023, I began to feel dizziness and vertigo. It lasted for months. Doctor's couldn't figure anything out. In May 2024, my dizziness has returned. It's also at a very bad time because my mother was in a wreck on May 3 and I'm the only one with a car to drive everyone around. I'm dizzy while driving. It's very stressful. I'm dizzy all the time now. I do have high blood pressure, but I'm already taking medication for that. I don't think that is the source of the problem. It's like all of these primary doctors I've been to never want to figure out why I'm dizzy. They just give me another pill. I'm very frustrated with all of it. People don't understand how debilitating it is. It also makes it difficult to think in general. Everything is slow when I'm like this. I can't even exercise. I have not been checked for neck problems. I do work on the computer a lot. I'm an animator in animation and game industry, and I record gameplay videos as well. I'm getting checked again for allergies soon. I do have lots of allergies and Dallas area is the worst place for allergies. I'm miserable everyday. I don't even like living in this miserable city area. It's all making me insane.

  17. This happens to me randomly and has become more frequently over the last year or two. My neurologist has never heard of cervicogenic, dizziness or cervical vertigo. So she blows it off. Which makes me lose all faith and her knowledge, even though she is the busiest neurologist in town. I don’t expect everybody to know everything as I am a nurse and there’s just too much medically to be an expert on. But I do expect for my neurologist to look into something she doesn’t know about and still try to help me. Unfortunately, paying for health insurance every month still means that I’m going to YouTube to try and find my own answers and treatment. Thank you for sharing the stretches. I am desperate.

  18. How many times a day are you meant to do this . Thankyou

  19. Thank you I found this really helpful

  20. last time when i had bad vertigo i gripped my neck at the back and that made my verigo worse once I let it off it was little bit better but I still had vertigo, it disappeared many hours later but I do have verigo on an off sometimes it just goes away then it comes back again, sometimes have 1-2 months without verigo could this be cervical vertigo?

  21. It seems like I slept in a pretty bad position and it gave me a stiff neck for three weeks. Suddenly on a day I got the imbalance thing. I was upset and confused. Felt similar to when you’re getting drunk.

Anyway, my solution was doing the stretches on this video and some others. I’d do it 2 to 3 times a day.

I also did epley maneuver just in case my problem was inside my ears.

I also started sleeping facing upwards without a pillow, since it’s said that it’s the best position for your spine. (Gotta say, body feels much more rested)

And finally, I developed a firm and positive attitude to heal and become perfectly balanced and healthy, through intentional prayer and affirmations.

Which one cured me? Maybe they all did.

I was good after 4 days of my first symptoms.

  22. Hi, thanks for your useful videos. I have had what i describe as lightheadness for years, doctors find nothing wrong. I have a lot of neck tension so i am hoping it all comes from that. Part of the problem i find is describing this strange feeling. I really need to commit to a good daily stretching routine i think and see if it helps. Can physiotherapy really help? Any advice is much appreciated

  23. Is there any tablet for cervical vertigo I have urgent need please tell..

  24. Hi doctor,
    Thank you for these exercises.

I feel like the surface on which i am walking is kind of displacing sidewards making it difficult for me to maintain balance.Have shown multiple doctors and did multiple MRIs .but no reslut.
Not sure what i should do.
    Can you please guide something?

  25. Thank you this was helpful suffering from whiplash /concussion accident trying to do gentle exercises for my neck healing.

  26. Thank you this is excellent!!! I have motion sickness my whole and then in my 40s became vertigo. Last couple years frequent attacks. Diagnosed Cervical stenosis. Going to chiro regularly sometimes helps sometimes not. He does gentle movements but minimal treatment. And he never showed me these exercises 😠Also do therapeutic massage once a month. I m in a computer screen all day, run and lift weights everyday. It has affected every part of my life. Cannot go on any type of boat, cannot fly anymore, no passenger car rides, no events with flashing lights, no dancing due to spinning. Very upsetting. Also under enormous stress from taking care of 90 year old bed ridden mom and working digital design job 40 hour weeks etc etc. no one else I know suffers from this and some think it’s conjured up all in my head…actually it’s in my neck and spine. Have gone through so much $$$ over the years trying to find something to help. Most doctors don’t know anything in regards to this.

The only thing that somewhat helps is forcing myself to go out and run or drive. Forces my eyes to focus…?

Anyway I just did these exercises and seems to be helping with this latest attack. Thank you so much and I will continue to follow ur channel!!!❤

  27. OMG I had a cervical vertigo and this exercises totally worked for me! I didn't know what is reason for vertigo. When I do this exercises, I feel realy better. Thank you so much.

  28. Hi Doctor Jo,
I have been dealing with dizziness for a very long time. It always gives me the sensation of swaying and sometimes I am completely shaken off by the sensation. It comes with or without warning. But nowadays I have been having spasm over my neck behind my skull (mainly occipital region) along with throbbing with or without pain). I get dizzy when I lay down and when I wake up in the morning.
I have seen a lot of specialist but none of them seem to diagnose it correctly 🥹. I am still suffering.
I would love to know your opinion and I would love some suggestions as well.

  29. Can you have cervical vertigo without any pain in your neck? I have this constant feeling like I’m swaying but I don’t have any ear problems and I have really bad posture and scoliosis

  30. Have been waking with cervical vertigo for a couple of days (only discovered what this is today), again just awoke at 3am, while dealing with calming my body down and controlling anxiety, eventually mind wanderings led to finding you, Doctor Jo, and these stretches. Thank you! SO much! ♥ ♥ I may actually sleep now feeling steady, instead of feeling like I'm gonna fall out of bed 😂😊 🙏

  31. Could this be associated with chiari malformation??

  32. Excellent, this helped me a lot. Thank you

  33. Thank you so much I had neck surgery in December last year and I'm dizzy all the time lately but the neck is very tight.
    Thank you so much.

  34. Outstanding information and demonstration. Thank you Doctor this really helped me out.

  35. I've normal tinnitus and typical vertigo typically my eyes are spinning, as an MD showed my ex, learning Epley maneuver. I've seen and ENT an audiologist. However, just divorced and alone 1-mo, I'm getting this weird right cervical at the occipital ridge vertigo. I'm very much arthritic with degenerative joint disease in my entire C, T, L-S spine. Lately if I look up, the room is spinning and if I just move a little bit or too fast getting up from a seated position, I have to grab the sofa.

I can put my hand on the spot right under my skull to the right of my C-spine. I'm a retired massage therapist; was trying to hang some lights and fell off my 4' ladder this morning. Thankfully it was positioned right next to my lazy boy or I would've fell on the floor; pretty significant. Neck has kept me from driving last 3 days but I need to get out before the wknd.

Thank you for your video. I tried your exercises; pray it's not an inner mid-ear thing with crystals off cuz I can't seem to get that fixed alone; even in my sleep when I roll over to the right, suddenly the bed is spinning and wow really severe! Never had it like this before.

I'm sure it has everything to do with tense muscles after an abusive ex has finally left my home.

I'm thankful I found your video. Stay healthy! My neck feels less tense doing just your those little bit of exercises but still dizzy. 🥴 Being careful. 🙏

  36. I have to thank you because I have been feeling all kinds of dizzy and uncomfortable at work with my cervical vertigo for weeks- doing these exercises 1 night relieved me so much it brought me to tears. Thank you. You’re helping me feel normal again.

  37. Thank you for a great video, it has helped a lot and made me focus on what is really going on rather than let the head spin with any diagnosis. Just brilliant and you're a great narrator.

  38. Hey Jo, thanks for the video!! This is super informative and will start these exercises as soon as possible. Can I ask your advice? I’m having dizzy spells and cold sweats when I over exert in any form of exercise or even something simple like moving my head too quickly, I become dizzy with cold sweats, pins and needles and after it’s passed 10-15 mins I’m zapped of energy. After speaking to doctors they cannot find anything which is strange. The only thing they have picked up is bad wear and tear on my neck so the likely answer is cervical vertigo. Any hints or advice would be greatly appreciated! Thank you

  39. Between GP, physio, MRI, GP again, physio again… so glad I have access to these services but also the wait times in between are excruciating when you have vertigo… videos like these really help, feels like a community member taking some time with me to calm me down and offer me advice.
The anxiety is the worst part of this, for me, and you’re really helping a lot. Thank you so much.

  40. Can do you any sort of workout after these exercise I am afraid that the workout might spoil everything

  41. Can you help me Dr. jo. My client throw up after the epley manouver. I do all in the right way, but after two rounds per side her dissines was so horrible that she was not able to do it again. What should be my Focus. More Stretching or Massage?
