Indian Shooting Team’s Horror Start To Asian Games Campaign Raises Questions

Published

on

One word: ridiculous. That’s what the pre-Asian Games scenario has been for Indian athletes. As earlier reported by NDTV, the 35-member Indian shooting contingent faced a severe logistical nightmare upon its arrival in Japan. The group arrived on September 16 (early morning) and had to wait for hours before checking in. NDTV has accessed the booking reference list, which clearly shows that the Indian contingent had pre-booked rooms in a particular hotel.

Originally, 40 rooms were booked, as per the list given to the IOA by the organisers. But when the athletes went to the Grand Tiara Hotel, the Indian shooters were told that only seven rooms were available there, while another 33 were in a separate hotel, Toyoko Inn. Though the athletes eventually checked in, the problem did not end there. Five other members of the shooting contingent, including Rahi Sarnobat, arrived later with another batch of shooters.

But when one of the coaches went to the Grand Tiara Hotel to collect the keys to Rahi’s room, he was told that the room was no longer available as it was being used for dope control. This was despite the Indian Olympic Association booking the room and the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games organisers’ booking records confirming it.

Meanwhile, Rahi landed in Nagoya on Friday night and went to another Toyoko Inn hotel (there are several hotels by the same name in the city). However, instead of being told that she was at the wrong hotel, she was given the keys. So, the shooter went to the “wrong” hotel and got a room, but her room in the “right” hotel was missing. When will this mess end?

Long list of mess

Earlier, NDTV, through its ground reporting in Nagoya, learned that the Indian shooting contingent was enduring transport delays, accommodation shortages, and training disruptions ahead of the start of the Games.

The team arrived at the airport at 9:00 pm on September 15 and cleared customs by 11:00 pm, moving swiftly to the accreditation validation centre, where credentials were validated within 15 minutes. However, the smooth progression abruptly ended when athletes and coaches were left stranded at the accreditation centre without transport from 11:45 pm until 3:00 am.

Transport to the designated team hotel finally arrived at 3:00 am, reaching the property around 3:30 am. Upon arrival, the delegation was left stunned after learning that only seven rooms had been reserved for the 35 members.

IOA Intervenes

The situation became so severe that the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) had to intervene. Emergency accommodation was arranged across two properties 400 metres apart, with a total of 18 rooms being allocated. By the time this arrangement was finalised, the initial transport had departed.

The situation prompted athletes to manually drag their suitcases, along with heavy shooting equipment and ceremonial uniforms, along public streets in the early morning hours. Male athletes made multiple trips between the properties to assist female teammates with the heavy luggage. The contingent finally completed check-in procedures between 5:00 am and 5:30 am, more than eight hours after landing in Nagoya.

After resting on September 16, the contingent attempted to resume training on the morning of September 17, when a fresh setback occurred. Scheduled to board a 7:00 am bus to reach the shooting range by 8:20 am, the athletes encountered further delays as only one bus arrived to take them to the training centre.

Multiple team members and coaches were made to wait in line for three and a half hours, eventually boarding a bus at 10:30 am and reaching the venue at 12:30 pm.

David Benavidez three-man hit list named before jump up to heavyweight

Published

on

David Benavidez is closing on a crucial phase of his career where three fights, in particular, could see him become boxing’s next pound-for-pound king.

The 29-year-old became a three-division world champion in May, dethroning Gilberto Ramirez with a sixth-round finish for the WBO and WBA cruiserweight titles.

Since then, Benavidez has flirted with the idea of moving back down to light-heavyweight but now appears set to remain at 200lbs.

He is, after all, the mandatory challenger to Michal Cieslak, who was elevated from ‘interim’ to full WBC champion following Noel Mikealian’s ninth-round stoppage defeat to Jai Opetaia last weekend.

Benavidez is therefore likely to enter a three-belt unification match with Cieslak on December 12, before targeting a more appealing clash with Opetaia for Cinco de Mayo weekend in 2027.

With ‘The Mexican Monster’ having one fight remaining on his Premier Boxing Champions contract, too, he may embrace the opportunity to become a free agent and work with Dana White’s Zuffa Boxing.

Either way, father and trainer Jose Benavidez Sr has expressed his interest in the Opetaia fight, while also telling BOXING n BBQ that he would entertain showdowns with Dmitry Bivol and Artur Beterbiev.

While still the unified king at 175lbs, Bivol has previously teased a move up to cruiserweight and Beterbiev, especially at this stage in his career, would surely benefit from making the same 25-pound jump.

As for Benavidez’s long-term future, though, it appears that his father is keen for a move up to heavyweight, where the former super-middleweight champion would look to follow in the footsteps of Roy Jones Jr.

Vikings Make the Kyler Call

Published

on

The Vikings have made the call on Kyler Murray.

Carson Wentz is going to start on Sunday as Minnesota travels to Chicago. Doing so means that J.J. McCarthy will function as the main backup. Look for Max Brosmer, the sophomore UDFA, to get bumped up from the practice squad. He’ll slot into that emergency QB3 job where he can only be inserted if the top pair of passers go down to injury.

Consider the official blurb from the team itself: “Head Coach Kevin O’Connell announces that Carson Wentz will start Sunday at Chicago and J.J. McCarthy will serve as the team’s backup.”

Vikings Make the Kyler Call

Last week, Mr. Wentz did reasonably well without being terrific. The veteran completed 63.2% of his passes by going 12/19 for 133 yards and 3 touchdowns.

In the end, Minnesota had 39 points for the day, a beefy total that’s going to be tough to replicate. So much of what went into that final score was excellence from specials teams and especially the defense. Can Wentz shine without that kind of support?

Sticking with the run game was a wise move but Minnesota is now lacking Jordan Mason. Some combination of Aaron Jones alongside DeeJay Dallas and Demond Claiborne are going to get the ground attack cooking.

Another part of the problem is that WR2 Jordan Addison and WR3 Jauan Jennings got shutout against the Packers. Neither had a single catch, but Jennings does do wonderful work as a blocker.

Jennings isn’t able to play in Week 2 due to a personal issue that Ben Goessling reports is a close family loss. The word from the writer from The Star Tribune: “Kevin O’Connell said the Vikings will start Carson Wentz on Sunday. Kyler Murray made progress this week, and should be out of the concussion protocol by next week. J.J. McCarthy will be the backup. Jauan Jennings will be out after the loss of a close family member.”

And then there were the coverage issues for Brian Flores’s secondary. Josh Metellus and Theo Jackson had terrible games. So did CB1 Byron Murphy Jr. All of these guys need to be better. Weapons such as Rome Odunze and Colston Loveland are going to feast if the zones don’t tighten.

Expecting Wentz to win without all of these guys playing better would be foolish. Close to impossible, even.

The Vikings have made the correct call with Kyler Murray. Caution is to be encouraged when we’re talking about a person’s cognitive health. Let the top passer get completely healthy before considering a reinsertion into the lineup.

Kickoff for the Vikings at Bears is scheduled for 12:00 p.m. CT on Sunday, September 20th.

Canelo Alvarez names the top 3 hardest punchers he has faced

Published

on

Canelo Alvarez has named his three hardest-hitting opponents in a 68-fight career that will guarantee him Hall of Fame status.

The Mexican is now gearing up to face WBC champion Christian Mbilli, bidding to reclaim a quarter of the undisputed super-middleweight crown he lost to Terence Crawford.

This defeat came in September 2025 and followed his other two losses, against Floyd Mayweather and Dmitry Bivol, which many respectively attributed to experience and size disadvantages.

Indeed, Canelo was far from a natural light-heavyweight but Bivol, nevertheless, deserves full credit for implementing an effective gameplan and winning their 2022 encounter by unanimous decision.

Alvarez was also comprehensively outboxed when he faced Mayweather in 2013 but, while campaigning at 154lbs, the four-division world champion rarely seemed overly bothered by the power of his opponents.

Instead, he unsurprisingly experienced more thudding blows from Gennady Golovkin, who was unfortunate not to win their middleweight showdown in 2017.

After boxing to a draw, Canelo then emerged with a less dubious majority decision victory in their rematch the following year, before becoming the undisputed super-middleweight king and dethroning Sergey Kovalev for the WBO 175lb title in 2019.

At the time, Kovalev was a far cry from his formidable prime but, even so, Alvarez has named the ‘Krusher’ as one of his most powerful opponents.

As for the third biggest puncher he has ever faced, Canelo told STORY SPORT that, despite stopping him in three rounds, he also felt the super-welterweight power of James Kirkland when they collided in 2015.

Super-middleweight world champion Mbilli, meanwhile, boasts a similar knockout record to Kirkland as he looks to defeat the 36-year-old Canelo on October 31.

Second seed Paula Badosa will take on Nadia Podoroska in the semifinals of the SP Open 2026.

Badosa beat Justina Mikulskyte 6-3, 6-2 in the first round, and then staged a comeback to one-up Jazmin Ortenzi 4-6, 6-2, 6-2. She faced Mary Stoiana in the quarterfinals. The Spaniard squandered her break advantage on two occasions in the first set.

However, the third time was indeed the charm for Badosa. She remained in front after breaking Stoiana’s serve for the third time to take the opener. A double break lead put Badosa 5-1 up within a matter of minutes in the second set. While she blew two match points on Stoiana’s serve in the seventh game, she closed out the match herself in the next game for a 6-4, 6-2 win.

Podoroska moved past Lucrezia Stefanini and fifth seed Eva Lys in straight sets to book a quarterfinal date with Suzan Lamens. Podoroska captured a closely-contested first set with a focused performance in the tie-break.

Lamens raised her own level in response and captured the second set. She drew first blood in the third set to go 2-0 up as well. However, that marked the end of the road for her. Podoroska swept six of the next seven games in a remarkable turnaround to tally a 7-6 (5), 3-6, 6-3 win.

After a comeback win over Ortenzi, Badosa dispatched Stoiana in routine fashion. She has advanced to her second semifinal at the WTA level this year, and the 19th of her career. She has also reached her first semifinal on hardcourts since the Australian Open 2025.

Podoroska has tallied the best result of her comeback with her semifinal run here. She was sidelined for more than a year due to an injury, and returned to action in March this year. She has reached the semifinals of a WTA tournament for the first time since September 2023.

Both players have a rather dismal record at the semifinal stage. Badosa has gone 5-13 in semifinal matches, while Podoroska has lost all four of her prior semifinals. Given their respective histories at this stage, Badosa will be the favorite to win this match.

Pick: Paula Badosa to win in straight sets.
