Jacob Misiorowski threw six shutout innings to lift the visiting Milwaukee Brewers to a 5-2 win over the Chicago Cubs Tuesday.

Misiorowski (4-2) allowed only three hits and struck out eight with one walk on 74 pitches.

The big right-hander has 24 1/3 straight shutout innings over four starts.

Abner Uribe threw a scoreless ninth for his fifth save.

The Brewers will go for the three-game sweep Wednesday.

Cubs starter Ben Brown (1-2) gave up three runs and seven hits in five innings. The right-hander walked two and struck out six on 82 pitches.

The Brewers jumped out 1-0 in the first when Brice Turang drew a one-out walk and went to second when William Contreras singled.

After Christian Yelich struck out, Garrett Mitchell singled to right to bring in Turang.

Milwaukee added to the lead in the third when Jackson Chourio and Turang led off with singles.

Chourio went to third when Contreras grounded into a fielder’s choice and he scored on a Brown wild pitch.

Mitchell drew a two-out walk before Jake Bauers singled in Contreras for a 3-0 Brewers lead.

Bauers has reached base in 20 straight games.

The Cubs’ best chance came in the first when Nico Hoerner drew a leadoff walk and Michael Busch reached on an error.

Misiorowski, however, forced Alex Bregman to fly out to center and then struck out Ian Happ and Seiya Suzuki to shut down the threat.

The 24-year-old scattered three hits over the next five innings and did not allow the Cubs to get a runner to second base.

The Cubs matched a season high with 13 strikeouts.

Turang put it away in the eighth when he hit a two-out, two-run home run for a five-run Milwaukee lead.

The Cubs finally broke through in the eighth when Pete Crow-Armstrong led off with a single and went to third when Miguel Amaya hit a ground-rule double into the ivy in left.

Hoerner singled in Crow-Armstrong for the first Cubs run.

Suzuki cut the lead to three when he hit a bases-loaded, two-out shot off Luis Rengifo’s glove at third to bring in Amaya.

Chad Patrick, however, came on to induce pinch-hitter Michael Conforto into a fielder’s choice to end the inning.

2027 NFL Draft: Steelers, Browns among teams most likely to need QB

Published

on

What the 2026 NFL Draft class lacked in quarterback talent, the 2027 crop of prospects promises to make up for. With Arch Manning, Dante Moore and a host of other exciting arms set to make the leap from college next spring, NFL teams in need of a franchise signal-caller should view next year’s draft as the jackpot.

Only the Las Vegas Raiders took a potential plug-and-play starter in the 2026 NFL Draft, and even then, Fernando Mendoza might have to wait at least a few games behind Kirk Cousins. Next year, more than just a couple of teams could have starting jobs available for rookies.

Some of those squads may already have the answer to their problems on their roster. The Miami Dolphins, for instance, could be set for the foreseeable future with Malik Willis on board as a breakout candidate. Others are in for a long year on offense and will enter the draft in desperate search of a cornerstone around which to build their rosters in 2027 and beyond.

Here are seven teams that might be in the market for a quarterback in the 2027 draft, where they could pick in the draft order and which player on their roster has a chance to shake up those plans.

Arizona Cardinals

The situation: The gap between the Cardinals and the rest of football’s best division is so wide that moving on from Kyler Murray made all the sense in the world. This is the right time for Arizona to embrace a rebuild.

The team reportedly informed Jacoby Brissett that he will handle starting duties, but he wants to be paid as such and continues to skip voluntary workouts in search of a new contract.

Given that Arizona may be the likeliest team to hunt for a new quarterback in the next draft and already has a potential next man up in 2026 draftee Carson Beck, it would behoove the franchise to avoid paying Brissett starter money beyond this fall.

The floor and ceiling: Brissett started 12 games last year and went 1-11, albeit with respectable stats. Given that he just oversaw such a miserable season and that the NFC West should be just as tough in 2026, both the floor and ceiling are tremendously low for Arizona. This team might be the safest bet to land the No. 1 pick.

The veteran who could change the plan: Neither Brissett nor Gardner Minshew has secured a long-term starting job at any previous stop. It is Brissett’s role for now, though, and to his credit, he has been serviceable before. Believe it or not, he actually stands as the NFL’s all-time career leader in interception percentage at a minuscule 1.4%. However, that will not be enough to convince Arizona he is anything more than a short-term bridge to whomever it selects early in the draft.

Cleveland Browns

The situation: The revolving door spins back around this year with the chance of another shake-up in the starting group. Deshaun Watson will get a shot at the job and only has to beat out a couple of second-year players who struggled to latch onto the role in their rookie seasons: Shedeur Sanders and Dillon Gabriel

Taylen Green arrived via the draft as a sixth-round pick and is the only fresh face in the room — one whose athleticism is tantalizing but likely not enough on its own to reasonably fight for a spot in the lineup unless things truly go haywire.

The floor and ceiling: The defense is ready to compete for a playoff berth, so all the Browns need from their offense is competence. If Watson revitalizes his career following a season lost to a torn Achilles, or if one of Sanders and Gabriel takes the next step, this will be a respectable team. That’s a major “if,” however.

Another year of mediocre quarterbacking likely leaves Cleveland at the bottom of the AFC North and searching for a franchise quarterback inside the top 10 yet again.

The veteran who could change the plan: Watson is not guaranteed to land the job, but he will get every chance to return to the top of the depth chart and make his contract look slightly less atrocious.

It has been six years, an Achilles tear and an off-field scandal since Watson last played a full campaign, and he was not exceedingly impressive in any of his three years as a half-season starter with the Browns. Maybe a year away from the field was what he needed to hit “reset” and launch a comeback effort.

In the unlikely event he rediscovers his old form, Cleveland could attempt to re-sign him next spring.

New York Jets

The group: Things came full circle for Geno Smith when he signed with the Jets this offseason. Back with the team that drafted him, the journeyman faces far less pressure than he did in 2013 and is effectively a stopgap until New York grabs its franchise quarterback next spring.

Behind him is a young trio of Brady Cook, Bailey Zappe and fourth-round pick Cade Klubnik. Upside is minimal despite the youth in the room, so a 2027 addition would have a path straight to the lineup — although Smith will remain under contract, which would give the Jets the ability to ease that draft pick into action.

The floor and ceiling: Considering the Jets were one of four teams to win just three games last season, it would not take much for them to slip behind their counterparts, finish 2026 with the league’s worst record and grab the No. 1 pick. Aaron Glenn is already on hot-seat watch, and a sour start to the year should be enough to prompt the franchise to fully embrace tank mode and a full refresh for 2027.

At the same time, Glenn’s roster is much better this time around. A host of defensive newcomers raised his unit’s floor. That is fantastic for his hopes of keeping his job, but it also threatens the Jets’ search for prime draft position.

The veteran who could change the plan: At the Annual League Meeting in March, Glenn tabbed Smith as “the guy who’s going to lead us to the promised land.” If he replicates the magic he found in Seattle, it is easy to envision him delivering the Jets’ best season in quite some time. It is far less realistic, however, that the franchise would latch onto a 35-year-old for more than a season or two, especially when he just led the league with 17 interceptions.

Pittsburgh Steelers

The situation: Aaron Rodgers finally decided to suit up for another year, thus ending the months-long waiting game for his choice on whether to re-sign with the Steelers or call it a career. Pittsburgh’s moves this offseason indicated this would always be the case, as it did nothing to ensure the offense would be in great shape if Rodgers instead decided to retire.

Because they remained all in on Rodgers, the Steelers did not acquire anyone who could provide a seamless transition in 2027. Backing him up for a second straight campaign are veteran backup Mason Rudolph and second-year option Will Howard, the latter of which awaits his first real chance to prove himself. General manager Omar Khan also used a third-round pick on Drew Allar, and because of the Day 2 investment, the Steelers clearly want the Penn State product to be part of their future — even though he is a project in whom some analysts have very little faith. The concerning reality is that with minimal upside in the room, there is no established succession plan for the fast-approaching post-Rodgers era.

The floor and ceiling: Rodgers led the Steelers to an AFC North title with two games to spare a year ago. The roster around him improved this offseason, so another trip to the playoffs should be the expectation now that he is back. The problem for Pittsburgh is that if this is his last year and it comes with a bunch of wins, the franchise likely will not be in position to draft one of the top quarterbacks in the 2027 class to replace him.

There is also the risk of regression for a team built around a 42-year-old quarterback. Rodgers ranked 23rd in QBR last season and is not close to the MVP version of himself that everyone remembers from his time in Green Bay. With another year comes the potential for further skill degradation and greater injury risk. If either of those things rears its ugly head, the bottom could fall out.

The veteran who could change the plan: The Steelers need a long-term option beyond Rodgers. Rudolph is next in line this year and will get a chance to establish himself as that successor if Rodgers misses any time. He has been serviceable in the past and looks destined to be a career backup, but say he seizes an opportunity and looks promising enough to convince the front office to give him a new contract. Might that be enough to leave the team content with the trio of Rudolph, Howard and Allar?

It is hard to envision the Steelers not taking advantage of a deep draft class, but they selected quarterbacks each of the last two years and may simply feel satisfied with developing what they already have.

Atlanta Falcons

The group: There is a true competition brewing between Michael Penix Jr. and Tua Tagovailoa. May the best southpaw win.

If Penix is healthy enough to play Week 1, it would make sense for the Falcons to give him one more chance to prove he was worth a first-round pick. If not, there is a world in which Tagovailoa plays so well early in the year that he never relinquishes the job.

Both have extensive injury histories, and neither has won at a high level lately, so it may simply be safer for the Falcons to draft another option next April regardless of what happens.

The floor and ceiling: Atlanta’s floor is reasonably high because if one of Penix or Tagovailoa does not work out, the other is still a serviceable player. Quarterback play seems unlikely to fall off a cliff, and the offensive weapons are some of the best in the league.

Neither signal-caller is a franchise cornerstone, though, so the most reasonable outcome is for the Falcons to finish in the middle of the pack and pick somewhere in the teens come draft day.

The veteran who could change the plan: Ideally for Atlanta, Penix would outduel Tagovailoa and take the next step as a long-term starter. The Falcons invested more in him and possess up to three more years of team control, whereas Tagovailoa arrived on a one-year minimum deal.

Penix ascending to another level would lock him in as the future and reduce or eliminate the need for Atlanta to take a first-round quarterback for the second time in three years. Tagovailoa producing a bounce-back campaign, on the other hand, would allow him to hit the open market as a legitimate threat to leave in unrestricted free agency.

Minnesota Vikings

The group: While J.J. McCarthy has another chance to prove himself as the Vikings‘ franchise quarterback, he faces an uphill battle. Not only must he stay healthy — something he has yet to do through two years as a pro — but he also has to beat Kyler Murray in this offseason’s position battle.

Murray arrived on a minimum contract and is a real bounce-back candidate now that he finds himself in a better situation than in Arizona.

The floor and ceiling: Even in a year when McCarthy sustained injury after injury, stretching the quarterback room as thin as possible, the Vikings still finished a game above .500.

If McCarthy stays healthy and improves, or if Murray proves to be the reclamation project Minnesota hopes for, this should be a playoff team. Otherwise, a handful of wins should still be attainable, which likely leaves the front office picking in the middle of the first round.

The veteran who could change the plan: Much like the Falcons, Minnesota finds itself choosing between an oft-injured and unproven youngster and a perennial middle-of-the-road veteran seeking one final chance as a starter. The more team-friendly outcome is for McCarthy to figure things out, but the more likely scenario is that Murray delivers a solid campaign and forces the Vikings to decide between re-signing him or finding a rookie replacement.

Miami Dolphins

The group: Malik Willis secured his payday in Miami and, as arguably the top quarterback available in free agency, secured a three-year deal. He should get a long leash as the Dolphins try to determine exactly what they have in the longtime backup, but if it becomes clear he is a bust, Quinn Ewers waits in the wings.

Even if Willis lives up to the hype he built as Green Bay’s second option, Miami could still be on the hunt for another cornerstone in next year’s draft. The franchise needs a building block for what is clearly a full rebuild.

The floor and ceiling: The fire sale of nearly every veteran aside from De’Von Achane sets the stage for the floor to fall out from underneath what was a seven-win team last year. Miami is one of the early favorites to have a top pick in the 2027 draft, which it could use to land either Arch Manning or Dante Moore, who project as elite talents in a loaded class.

But if Willis proves his eye-popping audition with the Packers wasn’t a fluke, the Dolphins may win more games than expected, which would mean missing out on a premier signal-caller.

The veteran who could change the plan: Willis may simply be a late bloomer who finally begins to reach the potential that made him a Day 2 pick four years ago. He completed 30 of 35 passes with three touchdowns in his fourth professional season and looked like the best backup in the league during his two-year stint with the Packers.

If he sustains that development, Miami can use its draft capital to build around him rather than search for his replacement.

Man United retain Premier League title aim – but to catch Arsenal three big questions need answering

Published

on

Arsenal have been crowned Premier League champions but there are plenty of figures at Man Utd who believe they are getting closer to top spot.

Arsenal’s first league title in 22 years means five different clubs have now won the Premier League since Manchester United were last crowned champions. The question at Old Trafford is how much longer they will have to wait before getting their own moment of glory.

The drought at United will be into a 14th season next year, but there are figures inside the club who believe winning the title is now a more achievable dream than it has been for a long time.

In terms of competition, the last two seasons would bear that out. Liverpool won the league last year on 84 points and Arsenal can only reach 85 this season. Crucially, last season’s runners-up got only 74 points, while this season’s can get a maximum of 81. These are points tallies that are far more achievable than the days when Manchester City and Liverpool were hitting the high-90s.

Click here to find out the latest Manchester United news in our daily newsletter

United have also built up momentum over the second half of this season. Since Michael Carrick was appointed, United have taken more points than any other club across 16 games. That is a decent sample size, but the lack of any distractions aside from the Premier League has clearly helped.

It does feel like there is an opportunity within the Premier League. City are about to lose their greatest-ever manager, Liverpool have the look of a club in decline, and anything could happen to Chelsea under Xabi Alonso. Credit to Arsenal for getting over the line, but they don’t look like the kind of champions who will kick on and turn next season into a one-horse race. Their style isn’t set up to run away with a season.

For their part, United have an Ineos-led target of a league title by 2028 to mark the club’s 150th anniversary. The view inside Old Trafford remains that winning the league within the next two seasons is achievable.

There are hurdles to overcome to make that a reality. The most immediate one is replacing Casemiro and making sure the recruitment successes of 2025 are repeated this summer. United have taken significant steps forward this season thanks to Senne Lammens, Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo and Benjamin Sesko, all of who have been good additions to the squad.

That will need to be repeated in 2026, especially when it comes to overhauling a midfield that now lacks quality and depth to fight on two fronts, which brings us to the next challenge. There is no doubt that a large part of United’s success this season has been built on playing just 40 games.

A return to the Champions League and a deeper run in domestic cup competitions could add 20 fixtures to the schedule, and how Carrick and his coaching staff deal with two games a week rather than one will be fascinating. They will certainly need a deeper squad to maintain a challenge at home and abroad.

But for all the worthy signs of ambition and for all that Ineos deserve some credit for showing a desire to win the biggest trophies, the reality is United are yet to come close to a title challenge since 2013. Some point to Arsenal and note how Mikel Arteta has gradually built them into a team capable of winning the league.

However, Arsenal under Arteta were starting from a much lower base than United are now under Carrick, and the truth is the Gunners have squandered good chances to win the league in two of the previous three seasons.

With a game to go, United are 14 points off top spot this season. That will be the third time in 13 years they have finished within 14 points, but they’ve never been closer than 12, which came in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s final full season in 2020/21.

Those previous campaigns serve as a warning, as well. After getting within a dozen points, United were 35 points away the following season as the wheels came off. Cristiano Ronaldo’s arrival unbalanced the team, Solskjaer was sacked in November and Ralf Rangnick’s spell as interim manager was a disaster.

Then, in Erik ten Hag’s first season, United were again 14 points off the top. A year later, the gap was 31 points as Ten Hag’s attempts to develop the team tactically backfired.

Heading into 2021/22 and 2023/24, there was hope United could build on what looked like a solid platform. On both occasions, it all came crashing down. That is something they have to avoid heading into next season if Project 150 is to come to fruition. It is Arsenal celebrating this morning, but United hope it will soon be them.

Pep Guardiola gives unusual Man City farewell at Bournemouth

Published

on

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola did not linger long with the away fans at Bournemouth after the 1-1 Premier League draw

Is he definitely off then? That was what plenty of Manchester City fans left the Bournemouth stadium asking themselves after they watched the end of their team’s Premier League hopes for another season.

The news that they have been dreading for years came on the eve of the game, that Pep Guardiola will be leaving the club at the end of the season. After ten years and twenty trophies, he has decided that this is the right time to depart.

But it hasn’t been confirmed officially, and until that happens there will be some hope. What’s more, Guardiola suggested in his interviews after the game that his future would only be decided in talks with chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak over the coming days.

Click here to find out the latest Manchester City news in our daily newsletter

If that feels to anyone that has covered the story like it will simply be a matter of rubber-stamping a departure that he has already made peace with, the City chairman will not give up until it is categorically over and there is no more talking to be done. There is a chance that there is no communicado oficial before Friday afternoon when Guardiola next sits down for a press conference.

Something definitely felt off with the manager on Tuesday though when the final whistle went. It started off as he often does, arguing with the fourth official about decisions that he felt hadn’t gone City’s way – primarily the lack of time added on at the end of the game given Erling Haaland scored in injury time.

The Catalan then headed onto the pitch, where he congratulated the Bournemouth players and recognised his own before going over to the away end. But as the City stars lingered to show their support, Guardiola – usually one of the last to leave at an away game – only clapped briefly before turning and walking back across the pitch on his own and headed inside.

Without even speculating over what it could or couldn’t mean, the facts of it are that it was unusual – and noticed by fans as a departure from what he normally does. That added to the uncertainty over the next few days, even if Guardiola is clear on his love for the supporters.

Manchester City and PUMA have launched the club’s new home kit for the 2026/27 season, designed with a full gradient of sky blue that’s darker at the shoulders and lightening as it falls with metallic monochrome crest and sponsor details.

“Let me talk with my chairman,” he said afterwards. “I know they love me so much, I love them more. It’s the best place to be. I love that place, I adore it. Let me talk about my club. People say I talk with a million people and I was incredibly focused on my job. We are in the competitions. I was there and this is what I have to do.”

More than 60,000 pairs of eyes will be on the manager on Sunday at the Etihad where Blues will hope the farewell is not as strange as it was at Bournemouth.

Referee Michael Salisbury not selected for final Premier League matchday

Published

on

The referee for Manchester United‘s win over Nottingham Forest last Sunday has not been selected for any match in the final round of Premier League fixtures.

Michael Salisbury allowed Matheus Cunha’s goal for United to stand, despite Bryan Mbeumo handling the ball in the build-up.

Salisbury rejected a video assistant referee (VAR) review to rule out the goal and Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) later admitted that it should have been disallowed.

Referees in the English professional game adopt a more lenient approach to handball than other nations, albeit still within the laws.

And although referees’ boss Howard Webb told Forest that while there could be justifiable reasons to deem it was not handball by Mbeumo, ‘football’s expectation’ would have been for the goal to be disallowed.

It was only the 17th time in seven seasons – and the fourth this season – that a referee has rejected the advice of the VAR at the pitchside monitor.

Salisbury, who has been in charge of 13 Premier League matches this season, is not part of the officiating team for any of Sunday’s 10 games, which all kick off at 16:00 BST.

Meanwhile, James Bell has been selected as VAR for Fulham‘s home game with Newcastle, despite criticism of the decision not to recommend a review of a challenge by Arsenal‘s Kai Havertz on Burnley‘s Lesley Ugochukwu on Monday.

Amir Khan addresses potential bare knuckle boxing return

Published

on

Amir Khan retired in 2022 following defeat to Kell Brook, but the Bolton man has teased a comeback on a few occasions since.

British boxing’s youngest Olympic Medalist and a world champion at just 22, Khan took UK fans on a thrilling ride during his campaign. Big wins against the likes of Marcos Maidana and Zab Judah were tempered by stoppage losses against Terence Crawford, Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez and more. No matter the result, Khan’s fights were always thrilling, perhaps because of the jeopardy of defeat.

The former unified champion looked far from his peak against Brook, but has entertained a return in the years since against Floyd Mayweather or Manny Pacquiao.

Speaking to Boxing News ahead of the Paulie Malignaggi vs Rolando Dy super-welterweight BKB title fight, Khan said he knows the interest is there, but that he is currently happy in retirement.

“I know they’ve been saying I should give it a try. Look, I’ve never shied away from a fight; you can see from my career. Who knows? Let’s see what happens. You want to get in there sometimes, but let’s see how things go. At the moment, I’m just enjoying it.”

Malignaggi, a former opponent of Khan’s, would go on to be dropped and stopped by Dy in the second round of the contest. It could perhaps serve as a warning to the Brit of the brutality of this particular combat sport.

Malignaggi is just one of several former boxers to attempt to reignite their career on the bare knuckle scene, with Victor Ortiz, Lee Selby and Yuriorkis Gamboa also joining the BKB promotion.

Moses Itauma closing in on opponent for ‘massive test’ in August

Published

on

Moses Itauma is set to continue his pursuit of the heavyweight world title when he headlines the O2 Arena in August. Now, an opponent is close to being confirmed in a fight that promoter Frank Warren believes the youngster faces a ‘massive test’.

Itauma has breezed through the opposition in all 14 of his professional bouts to date and is well placed for a world title challenge at just 21 years old, positioned as the WBO mandatory challenger and ranked number one with the WBA.

Following his latest win against Jermaine Franklin Jr in March, Itauma announced that he would have liked to face Croatia’s Filip Hrgovic next, seemingly disappointed that the Rio 2016 bronze medallist was scheduled to take on Dave Allen instead.

However, after stopping Allen with ease on Saturday inside just three rounds, Hrgovic shared his willingness for a quick turnaround and a clash with Itauma. Speaking to talkSPORT Boxing, Warren confirmed his interest in that proposed contest.

“I would like to see that fight [between Itauma and Hrgovic] happen. There is negotiations going on and I would love to see that fight happen, it is a massive test for Moses and a massive fight.

“That has got fight written all over it, hasn’t it? It’d be an exciting fight, if we can make it happen.”

The comments echo those of Warren’s son, George, who said after the Allen fight that his immediate goal is to get the bout signed.

Itauma will headline the O2 Arena in London on Saturday, August 8, in what will be his second main event slot, as he looks to continue to build his profile. If the Hrgovic fight makes it over the line, assuming the cut suffered by the Croatian against Allen is healed in time, it will indeed be the most significant step up in Itauma’s career so far.

The Chicago White Sox acquired left-hander Joe Rock in a trade with Tampa Bay on Tuesday, sending infielder Oliver Dunn to the Rays in the deal.

The White Sox assigned Rock to Triple-A Charlotte upon the transaction’s completion. They also moved catcher Kyle Teel, who has a sprained right knee ligament, to the 60-day injured list to make room for Rock on the 40-man roster.

Rock, 25, made his major league debut last June, posting a 2.35 ERA over seven innings across three relief appearances for the Rays. He was 1-1 with one save and a 5.40 ERA over 13 games this season for Triple-A Durham.

Dunn, 28, appeared in 55 games for the Milwaukee Brewers across the 2024 and ’25 seasons, hitting .206 with a homer and 13 RBIs. He batted .296 with eight homers and 33 RBIs in 40 games for the Triple-A Charlotte in the White Sox’s organization this season.

Joel Bagan has signed a new four-year contract to stay at League One promotion winners Cardiff City.

The Bluebirds academy graduate played a key role as Brian Barry-Murphy’s side returned to the Championship at the first attempt in 2025-26.

The 24-year-old full-back was one of a trio of senior players whose deals were set to expire this summer.

But Bagan is now tied to Cardiff until 2030.
