Manchester United youngster JJ Gabriel had a huge smile on his face as he returned to the Leigh Sports Village dressing room last week.
Gabriel had just scored a hat-trick against Sabah’s youth team. His manager, Adam Lawrence, raved about him after the final whistle, saying he was in a “good place”, but his social media was wiped an hour later.
United were removed from Gabriel’s bio, with ‘@nikefootball’ remaining. It felt like something may be afoot, which is why Tuesday’s bombshell that Gabriel had requested to leave the club was not a complete surprise.
The revelation still shocked United. There has been internal confusion about why Gabriel has now requested to leave, especially given that the plan was to include him in the squad tomorrow night ahead of a potential debut, which would have made him the club’s youngest debutant.
United still feel the situation is rectifiable given the timeframe on his contract. Gabriel cannot be de-registered, but next summer will be an opportunity for him to leave, and the club do not want to lose him.
Following the bombshell of Gabriel’s request, an industry insider suggested the situation may still be smoothed over with one thing: money. But whether that would be enough to keep Gabriel, and how much more United are even prepared to offer, remains to be seen.
United have done everything they can to show Gabriel there is a pathway to the first-team, as he has been on an accelerated development plan, receiving unprecedented backing for a player of his age.

It all started on the day Gabriel was brought to the club when he was unveiled alongside Cristiano Ronaldo’s son in the Old Trafford press conference room, the first of many concessions to make him feel valued.
United held a call between Gabriel and Marcus Rashford when he was still just a boy. They introduced him to Ruben Amorim in a meeting at Carrington, organised a brief chat with Sir Alex Ferguson at Old Trafford and have invited his family into the directors’ box on a few occasions.
A photo of Gabriel and Amorim circulated on social media after their meeting. The former United boss was unhappy that his father had shared the image publicly. It was deleted, but it had already spread far and wide.

The club have always known that whatever they might do, it might not be enough to keep Gabriel because his father, who forged a professional career before retiring early due to injury, has dreamt of his son starring for Barcelona.
The Manchester Evening News revealed in April 2025 that Gabriel was set to make his Under-18 debut. He was 14. A few months later, he came close to leaving the club and would have if not for an eleventh-hour meeting.
Shortly after that meeting, the MEN revealed that Jason Wilcox (director of football) and Omar Berrada (CEO) had been present, which showed the high regard in which Gabriel is held by top brass.
What happened in the meeting was extraordinary considering Gabriel’s age. United reiterated that he could become the face of the club and promised other concessions, so it was eventually agreed that he would remain in Manchester, but key to Gabriel staying was his desire to remain at the club.

Sources said that he had tears in his eyes on that day and was emotional at the prospect of leaving. Gabriel loves representing United and is naturally really close to some of his academy peers.
Staff members have been struck by his politeness and humility, but ultimately, a young player always relies on family and advisers at the start of their journey.
Gabriel’s camp has decided to attempt to leave United. They will be free to do so next summer, but he is under contract until the end of the season, which is why the request for him to become a free agent now is bizarre.

There is a trail of breadcrumbs that helps paint a picture of why the request has been made, though. The MEN reported in March that Gabriel would be involved during pre-season, and the youngster was first included in a first-team tour squad when United played Rosenborg in Trondheim.
Gabriel did not get onto the pitch as United trounced Rosenborg 5-0. The player himself was still thrilled to be involved. He politely said ‘thank you’ when congratulated on being in the squad as he left the stadium, and he enjoyed a special moment with his mother as they took a photo with his shirt.
Michael Carrick handed Gabriel his pre-season debut against Atletico Madrid in Stockholm. Again, the youngster looked delighted, but what those around him made of that being his only pre-season minutes is another matter.
The perks from United have been important in showing Gabriel that he is valued, but first-team minutes count for more, and the suspicion has been that his father has wanted his son to become one of the youngsters ever appearance-makers in the record books.

Ethan Nwaneri (15 years, 181 days), Max Dowman (15 years, 235 days), and Jemery Monga (15 years, 271 days) are the youngest debutants in the Premier League.
Gabriel was not old enough to play in the topflight last season, but he was 15 years and 320 days when United played Hull City on the opening day of the season.
Hull was not a realistic chance to give him a cameo, given they were leading 2-0 at half-time, but Ipswich would have been seen as an opportunity to give him minutes, and he was 15 years and 328 days when that game was played.

Gabriel would have become the fourth youngest Premier League appearance maker if he’d come on from the bench that day, and those around him view him as a better talent than Nwaneri, Dowman and Monga.
United feel they have done all they can to prove to Gabriel that he is the club’s future. He will no longer be given the chance to become the club’s youngster ever player against Brighton tomorrow night, but that will also mean less compensation will be owed to United if he leaves.
Carrick was prepped to face a question about Gabriel during his press conference ahead of Brighton because the fixture was an opportunity to include him in a matchday squad for the first time, and the club are aware of the huge media interest in him.
The press conference took place after the Manchester derby, so no question was asked about Gabriel, with the 15-year-old at the back of minds following a controversial defeat to Manchester City, but it’s a certainty the United boss will be asked about the situation after tomorrow’s game.

Former Manchester United forward Alejandro Garnacho has been told he’s ‘finished’ and isn’t fancied by Unai Emery after being left on the bench during Aston Villa’s comfortable Carabao Cup win on Wednesday night. The clash against Coventry City was highlighted as a chance for the forward to impress, but he was an unused substitute, leaving fans baffled by his exclusion.
Garnacho knew he wouldn’t get on the pitch with around 15 minutes of the match remaining when Emery used all five of his changes available. He joined Villa on loan from Chelsea in the summer, but has barely played for his new club.

He has, in fact, been an unused substitute for the last three games in all competitions. And that has not been lost on fans on social media, who fear Garnacho’s career may be declining already.
“Garnacho is really finished, still can’t start a cup game?” One said. A second added: “Is Garnacho finished here already?” Others aimed jibes at the 22-year-old, highlighting similarities with Liverpool’s Harvey Elliott, who endured a torrid loan spell at Villa last season.
“Garnacho is 100% Harvey Elliott Mk II,” a third said, referring to Elliott’s unsuccessful loan at Villa Park from Liverpool last season. A fourth added: “Garnacho must really be doing something wrong.”

The decision not to put Garnacho on the pitch was made despite Villa leading 3-1 for most of the second half. Emery instead opted to turn to Emiliano Buendia, Nicolas Jackson, Johan Manzambi and Alysson.
Garnacho completed a £40 million move from United to Chelsea in the summer of 2025. He has struggled to make an impact since his exit from Old Trafford.

Last season, he made 43 appearances in all competitions, scoring eight goals and providing four assists. However, most of those appearances came from the bench, leading to him moving to Villa on loan in search of more regular game time.
The 22-year-old came up through the youth teams at United after moving from Atletico Madrid in 2020. During his time at Old Trafford, he played 144 first-team games, scoring 26 goals and providing 22 assists before falling out of favour and pushing a move away from the club.
Despite suspicions that Emery doesn’t rate him, the Villa boss insisted there is a long-term plan after admitting the forward needs to improve. “We want him at the same level he was for Chelsea in the first part of last season and in Manchester two years ago,” he said.
“He is a player we have signed for a long time, and we will help him to feel comfortable and confident to get his quality,” said Unai Emery, Aston Villa manager.

After a chaotic Week 1, the runaway train that is the NFL barrels into the Week 2 slate. As is often the case, one of the key storylines in any given week is injuries, and Week 2 is no exception.
The NFL opening weekend, unfortunately, handed out its fair share of injury news. Kyler Murray’sVikings debut was cut short due to a concussion he suffered in the first quarter; the Chargers saw standout receiver Ladd McConkey go down in their upset loss to the Cardinals, and Sam Darnold is dealing with a soft tissue injury that forced him out of the opener in the first quarter and will sideline him for Week 2.
Needless to say, there’s a lot to catch up on when it comes to injuries and, as most teams hit the practice field for the first time on Wednesday, we’ll get some key updates. Below, we’ll dive into each team’s initial injury report, and we’ll provide the final injury report and game statuses for Thursday night’s contest between the Lions and Bills.
The Lions’ injury report for “Thursday Night Football” is worrisome, as starting right tackle Blake Miller (knee) and starting left guard Christian Mahogany (hip) have officially been ruled out. Plus, veteran defensive back D.J. Reed is questionable with a foot injury after being a limited participant in practice on Tuesday and Wednesday.
Bills safety Cole Bishop (knee/groin), running back Ty Johnson (hamstring) and defensive lineman T.J. Sanders (knee/illness) are all questionable to play on Thursday. All three were limited participants in practice Wednesday.
Panthers pass rusher Patrick Jones II, who missed the season opener with a back issue, sat out of practice on Wednesday, as did defensive tackle Bobby Brown III. Wide receiver Jalen Coker, who caught eight passes for a whopping 138 yards and two touchdowns on Sunday, was limited with an ankle injury. He was seen in a walking boot earlier this week but is aiming to play on Sunday.
Titans starting linebacker Cedric Gray has cleared concussion protocol after missing the season opener vs. Chicago, and he was listed as a full participant in practice on Wednesday. Fellow linebacker James Williams was limited with an elbow issue.
In Dallas, safety Malik Hooker (forearm) and linebacker DeMarvion Overshown (hamstring) missed practice on Wednesday. Pass rusher James Houston was limited with a shoulder injury.

While the BCCI has not officially announced the venues for WPL 2027, Mumbai and Vadodara are understood to be the likely hosts as per sources of Cricbuzz. The two cities hosted the previous edition, with matches played at the Cricket Club of India (CCI) in Mumbai and Kotambi Stadium in Vadodara. The final of WPL 2026 was held in Vadodara on February 5, with Royal Challengers Bengaluru emerging as champions.Varanasi has also been discussed as a potential venue, with a new stadium under construction in the city. However, hosting WPL matches there remains a remote possibility at this stage. Sources in the league have indicated that any decision on Varanasi would depend on the stadium being ready and tested through domestic matches before it could host a major tournament.
The team released the news, noting that Mr. Mason is being shuffled to the IR. What was looking like a precautionary move has now been confirmed as being more serious, requiring Mason to be sidelined for a minimum of four games. Upon first glance, a thumb ailment would appear to be minor for a running back. Why can’t he play through it?
Something to note, folks, is that a banged up thumb could easily undermine a runner. Securing the football would be made more challenging with an injured thumb. What about stiff-arming a defender or catching the ball? Pass protection would be harder, too.
So, Minnesota has decided to shutdown Mason over the short term to ensure he can get back to full health.
Jordan Mason put in a pile of work during the offseason to show up in good shape. The Vikings made note of that effort, praising him for his potential. Losing him as Kyler Murray sorts through his concussion is especially discouraging since the ground game has experienced some renewed importance after a long period of impotence.

Bumping up Dallas makes a lot of sense. He did excellent work on specials on Sunday, so the promotion looks like it’s well earned. And then adding Ford to the practice squad means signing a still-young runner who previously played some promising football for the Browns (the team where good football goes to die). These two are solid rather than sizzling options; neither boast Mason’s upside.

In Week 1, Minnesota’s decision was to keep rookie runner Demond Claiborne on the bench. That’s unlikely to continue for Week 2.
Presumably, Ford is going to need some time to get up to full speed. Claiborne’s task involves shoring up the RB3 job in the short term. Proving effective in that capacity could mean earning a larger and larger portion of the playing time pie as the season progresses.
Expect Aaron Jones to get a hearty workload as Dallas and Claiborne earn modest work. Does FB Max Bredeson earn more playing time for the Vikings?
The Vikings travel to Soldier Field in Week 2 for a game against the Bears. Whoever wins will be sitting atop the NFC North with an impressive 2-0 record.

Pakistan captain Babar Azam is set to return to domestic first-class cricket for the first time in nearly seven years, with the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) keen to see him back in action following Pakistan’s disappointing Test tour of England.Babar to represent Oil and Gas Development Company Limited (OGDCL) against Kingsmen Academy in the ongoing President’s Trophy Grade-I competition, starting September 18. His return comes after Pakistan suffered a 0-3 series whitewash in England and the PCB made sweeping changes to the touring squad and coaching staff.
PCB wants Babar back in red-ball cricket
Babar has not played domestic first-class cricket since 2019, when he represented Central Punjab in the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy. OGDCL sports head Farah Batool said the PCB had sent his name to the team for inclusion as a guest player.“Babar’s kit has been ordered and he will decide whether to play in the match from September 18 or from September 24 in the third-round game,” Batool said.
Shaheen, Haris among centrally contracted players in action
Babar is not the only centrally contracted Pakistan player featuring in domestic red-ball cricket after the England tour. Fast bowlers Shaheen Shah Afridi and Haris Rauf have also turned out for their respective teams in the President’s Trophy.Shaheen has represented KRL, claiming four wickets in an innings, while Haris picked up a five-wicket haul for PTV. The Hurricanes have now beaten their first two opponents (Stanford and Florida A&M) by a combined score of 122-13, with Mensah orchestrating the wildly dangerous offense to perfection. The Duke transfer is leading the pack with +575 Heisman Trophy odds heading into the ‘Canes’ matchup with Wake Forest on Friday.

This race is far from over, though, as big names are looming after the Ohio State-Texas instant classic shook up the favorites board.
OSU wide receiver Jeremiah Smith is now right behind Mensah at +750. Those odds improved slightly from the previous week, when he was +800. It also pushes Smith above his own QB, Julian Sayin, who now has just the seventh-best odds at +1600.

Following Mensah and Smith are Texas Arch Manning (+900), Notre Dame QB CJ Carr (+1100), Miami WR Malachi Toney (+1200), and Ole Miss Trinidad Chambliss (+1400). In addition to the top five, including football royalty like Manning and Carr, what is most interesting here is that Mensah’s true sophomore teammate is on the list. While Mensah and Toney are both top Heisman candidates now, that may become a problem when the votes start coming in, as voters will have to decide which player deserves more credit for Miami’s success.
Outside of the top seven, Week 3 risers include Mississippi State QB Kamario Taylor (+15000 to +2000), Georgia QB Gunner Stockton (+3300 to +2200), and SMU QB Kevin Jennings (+7500 to +4000). Players who dropped after Week 2 include Oregon QB Dante Moore (+1100 to +4000), who went from tied for third to tied for 13th after the Oklahoma State Cowboys upset the Ducks.
