Lombard Jr. becomes first Yankees shortstop with an error in 6 straight games since 1915

Published

on

NEW YORK — George Lombard Jr. made history this month when he became the first New York Yankees shortstop to homer in his major league debut.

Three weeks into his career, however, the rookie set a dubious mark by committing an error for the sixth straight game in Thursday night’s 5-1 loss to the Houston Astros.

Lombard has seven errors in his first 20 games and, after his latest miscue, the 21-year-old said his defence was not acceptable.

“It’s something we’re trying to figure out,” Lombard said. “It’s not acceptable. It can’t happen at this level. If you make your pitchers have to get extra outs it just makes it way harder on us, and teams are going to capitalize. So it’s something that we’re definitely going to have to clean up and I’ve got to be better tomorrow.”

With Christian Walker on second base in the eighth inning, Yainer Diaz hit a grounder that caromed off Lombard’s glove. The ball ricocheted to third baseman José Caballero and he was charged with a throwing error for his wild toss to first as Walker scored Houston’s fifth run.

“The one today, it’s kind of that in-between ball. So you’re like, is the third baseman getting there?” Yankees manager Aaron Boone said. “Is he not? There’s a little indecisiveness there. So I think that played into that a little bit.”

Lombard became the first Yankees shortstop since Roger Peckinpaugh in 1915 to commit an error in six consecutive games. On Wednesday night, Lombard misplayed a grounder by Walker in the seventh that allowed the tying run to score before the Yankees pulled away for a 9-3 victory.

Lombard has a .925 fielding percentage and has turned 15 double plays after the Yankees used Anthony Volpe and Caballero at shortstop until calling up their top prospect. New York shortstops have combined to make 16 errors overall.

Last season, Volpe led American League shortstops with 19 errors while playing with a torn labrum in his shoulder for the final four months.

“The good thing about George is you know he’s so skilled and gifted out there and foundationally he’s really good, too,” Boone said. “So he will get through it.”

Another Wil aiming for confidence boost in 2026 Caulfield race

Published

on

Trainer Ciaron Maher and the ownership group of Another Wil are hoping to achieve a confidence-building win at Caulfield.

Rather than competing in the lucrative Group 1 Memsie Stakes (1400m) this Saturday, Another Wil is set to run in the Evergreen Turf Handicap over the same distance.

It has been more than 18 months since Another Wil last tasted victory, which was in the Group 1 C F Orr Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield. This win was one of nine from his 21 starts, including three victories from six appearances over the course and distance.

Maher commented that horses, similar to most athletes, gain confidence from winning, and he is seeking this outcome on Saturday.

“They thrive off it,” Maher said. “That would be ideal and there’s a nice program that he can go back to at Group 1 level and hopefully he can do what we think he can do.”

There has been an ongoing expectation that Another Wil is of Group 1 standard, with a glimpse of this capability shown during the Brisbane winter carnival.

After finding the 1200m too short in the Doomben 10,000 when resuming, Another Wil subsequently finished fourth in the Kingsford Smith Cup (1300m) before running last in the Stradbroke Handicap (1400m) at Eagle Farm in June.

The 2kg claim from the in-form apprentice Jabez Johnstone was also a significant factor in Maher’s choice for Saturday’s race.

“His first two runs were good in Queensland, his third one was not as good on the wet track,” Maher noted. “He’s in very good order, has come up well and I just thought that 1400-metre benchmark 100, with a good record at the trip and at Caulfield and Jabez can claim off him as well. He’ll get in with 60 kilos, and he would be pretty well handicapped off that.”

Maher indicated that after Saturday’s race, the plan is to return to a higher level of competition, with numerous options available for the gelding.

Don’t miss out on the racing betting markets for the Evergreen Turf Handicap at Caulfield.

Arthur Fery, who made a memorable run to his first ATP Tour semifinal appearance last month, is headed to his second semifinal after advancing at the Winston-Salem Open on Thursday in North Carolina.

The fourth-seeded Briton rallied to beat Aleksandar Kovacevic 3-6, 7-5, 6-3 in the quarterfinals.

Fery, then ranked No. 114 in the world, became the first unseeded British player to reach the semifinals at Wimbledon in the Open Era before he lost to Alexander Zverev in the semifinals.

With his latest win, he will rise to a career-high ranking of at least No. 35 next week.

Fery had 17 winners to Kovacevic’s 16, but the American committed 39 unforced errors to Fery’s 20.

Fery’s semifinal opponent will be Australia’s James Duckworth, who overtook 15th-seeded Fabian Marozsan of Hungary 6-7 (4), 6-2, 6-4.

The other semifinal will feature third-seeded Ignacio Buse of Peru and France’s Benjamin Bonzi. Buse squeezed past eighth-seeded Juan Manuel Cerundolo of Argentina 7-6 (4), 4-6, 6-2, and Bonzi topped 13th-seeded Botic van de Zandschulp 7-6 (5), 6-4.

Winston-Salem Open: Arthur Fery beats Aleksandar Kovacevic to reach semi-finals

Published

on

Britain’s Arthur Fery came from a set down to beat Aleksandar Kovacevic and book his place in the semi-finals of the Winston-Salem Open.

Fourth seed Fery, who won five games in a row from 5-5 in the second set, claimed a 3-6 7-5 6-3 victory in Thursday’s last-eight match in North Carolina.

After breaking Kovacevic to take the second set, Fery opened up a 3-0 lead in the third, serving out to clinch his first semi-final appearance since Wimbledon in July.

The 24-year-old will face James Duckworth, who he beat in Cincinnati earlier this month, in the last four, after the Australian defeated Hungarian 15th seed Fabian Marozsan 6-7 (4-7) 6-2 6-4.

Fery’s surprise run to the Wimbledon semi-finals this summer lifted him into the top 40 in the world rankings – he is now 37th – and with it a place in the US Open for the first time.

He just missed out on being seeded for the final Grand Slam of the year at Flushing Meadows in New York so has been drawn against 13th seed Lorenzo Musetti in the opening round.

Shawn Porter addresses Terence Crawford comeback rumours after new training footage

Published

on

Recent training footage of Terence Crawford has sparked rumours that the pound-for-pound superstar could be planning a comeback. Fellow former welterweight champion Shawn Porter has now weighed in.

Crawford and Porter fought back in 2021 in what turned out to be Porter’s final bout, with ‘Bud’ defending his WBO title via round 10 stoppage and then continuing his welterweight KO streak in clashes with David Avanesyan and Errol Spence Jr to claim the undisputed title at 147lbs.

The Omaha southpaw then got his hands on super-welterweight world honours with a triumph over Israil Madrimov, before the crowning moment of his career – an undisputed super-middleweight title win against Canelo Alvarez.

The undefeated sensation hung up the gloves just three months later, but footage of him back in the gym has led fans to believe that Crawford could soon return.

However, in an interview with About Boxing, Porter all but shut down those suggestions, revealing that Crawford’s retirement plans were in place long before his triumph over Canelo and that his decision was not made without serious thought.

“Without saying too much, I will say that I don’t think he is going to come back. I don’t want to say that I know he is not going to come back because I feel like that is saying too much, but we have had our conversations a long time before he even fought Canelo Alvarez.

“We have had conversations over the years and I knew that time was coming after that Canelo fight, what else do you want to do?”

Instead, it is understood that Crawford’s return to the gym was done to aid stablemate Lester Martinez, who takes on Luka Plantic on Saturday in an attempted second defence of his WBC Interim super-middleweight title.

Champions League will give Man City and Hugo Viana transfer answer

Published

on

Manchester City were handed an instant Rodri reunion as the Champions League threw up several intriguing ties for Enzo Maresca’s side and leaves the Blues with one big question to answer.

The Blues have failed to go beyond the last eight since winning the trophy in 2023 and will hope that under Maresca they can go deep in the competition this season.

The trip to Barca is the obvious headline from a draw that also includes a gladiatorial home tie against PSG as well as Kevin De Bruyne’s Napoli visiting the Etihad.

It’s a difficult but not daunting set of league fixtures with Sporting Lisbon, Porto, AEK Athens, Leipzig and Lens the other opponents. And the European competition will shine a light on City’s squad depth this season with the Blues having undergone a major summer rebuild.

A host of players have moved on and Elliot Anderson and Ayyoub Bouaddi have arrived with the prospect of more signings to come.

The big question with a few days left in the window is whether City have the depth and the experience to compete on all fronts.

Maresca has seen a wealth of know-how walk out of the door, with Rodri, Bernardo Silva, Nathan Ake and John Stones all leaving having started the Champions League final victory three-and-a-bit years ago. All four are in the Champions League with new clubs this term. Throw in James Trafford, Omar Marmoush, Nico Gonzalez and Savinho, and City are light on numbers just now.

Maresca admits the squad is young and wants more leadership before the window closes. His ideal squad size is 22 senior players supplemented by the likes of Ryan McAidoo, Floyd Samba and Kaden Braithwaite from the academy. At the moment City are short.

Last season Pep Guardiola made wholesale changes for a European date with Bayer Leverkusen and City put in a woeful display to suffer a dismal home defeat which left Guardiola furious. That was a night of failed auditions to get into the first XI and prompted Pep to say to his squad in the changing room after the game: ‘You will have another manager.’

They do now have another manager and the prospect of an enthralling European campaign is one to savour, but the City hierarchy and Director of Football Hugo Viana have to ensure that Maresca’s men are ready.

The Blues chief has a strong record in cup competitions having led Chelsea to the Conference League title and the Club World Cup, dismantling PSG in the final of the latter.

City want more heady European nights, not Leverkusen lows. The big question is: do they have the squad to cope?

FPL gameweek two tips: Bruno Fernandes or Erling Haaland for captain? Sell Man Utd assets?

Published

on

Yes, I would hold this week.

The 2-0 loss at Hull was unexpected, and plenty of managers are sitting on two or three United players. That does not mean you have to move this week.

Ipswich at home is still a good fixture and a good chance for Bruno Fernandes and Bryan Mbeumo to respond.

If they blank again, the exits are clean: Bruno (£12m) into Cole Palmer (£9.5m) or Antoine Semenyo (£8.5m); Mbeumo (£8m) into Morgan Rogers (£7.5m) or Phil Foden (£7m).

However, I would give them this game against Ipswich first before making any decision.

MLB Proposes Weeks-Long Free Agent Signing Window, Lowering In-Season Options

Published

on

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

Major League Baseball has proposed limiting free-agent signings to several weeks in December and then from early February in each offseason, along with a ban on trades during the gap in between. The plan aims to create more of an offseason transaction flurry similar to those in the NFL and NBA.

The plan offered to the players’ association Thursday is contingent on adoption of the salary cap system MLB proposed in May, which the union has vowed never to accept.

MLB also proposed lowering the maximum in-season options to the minor leagues from five to four and adopting a system of weekly rosters.

Teams would be allowed 14 pitchers, up from 13, when the 26-man roster limit is in effect from the season’s start through Aug. 31.

The union did not immediately respond publicly to the new proposal.
