Manchester United’s latest deal has been backed by three important people

Published

on

Man Utd defender Harry Maguire signed a new contract this week to extend his stay at Old Trafford by at least another season.

Earlier this week, Harry Maguire shared an image signing his new contract, along with his two daughters, who wore Manchester United shirts with ‘Daddy’ on the back.

The caption alongside the picture read: “My club.” Maguire has spent more time at United than any other club, but you would have got long odds on his association potentially lasting as many as nine years when he was in the doldrums in 2023.

Maguire signed a one-year deal, with the option of another 12 months, meaning he could stay in Manchester until 2028. The defender was born in Sheffield, but it’s across the Pennines where he now calls home.

Maguire’s time at United looked set to end in the summer of 2023. He suffered a huge loss of form in 2021/22 and made eight league starts in the following campaign under Erik ten Hag, who stripped him of the captaincy.

West Ham were interested in signing him and, in another world, Maguire moved to the London Stadium. He stayed, fought for his place and enjoyed a renaissance instead. Who doesn’t love a comeback story?

Maguire has become a fan favourite and there’s no doubt that the peaks and troughs have helped to endear him to supporters. He was mocked, once being booed by England ‘fans’ on international duty, and he showed extraordinary mental resilience to come through that period.

“Sometimes it did cross my mind at the time just thinking, ‘Why? I don’t know why it has done this. I don’t know where it’s come from’,” he said of dealing with the abuse during a chat with journalists last week.

“My form dipped a little bit, yeah, of course, everyone does that in their career. But I was in a situation where I was just a lad from Sheffield playing for such a huge club. I thought this is what happens – this is the fault of the club not performing well.

“But when you look back it probably did go a little bit too far. At the time, I can remember thinking I just don’t know how this has really happened. I don’t know how it’s changed so quickly.”

Maguire’s mentality is the reason his situation has changed quickly. Not many players would be able to survive at United having reached such a low point, but the England international got his head down and worked hard.

The result is that he remains hugely important at United. The Reds needed to retain Maguire’s experience and quality, so it was a no-brainer to tie him down to a new deal on reduced terms.

There have been ringing endorsements since his contract was announced. “Harry has been here very long. I always say this in a way that is easy to understand. People like fresh meat, when you have the same meat for too long, you want a new one, and football is like that,” Bruno Fernandes told Men in Blazers.

Sky has upgraded its Ultimate TV and Sky Sports bundle to now include HBO Max, Netflix, Disney+, discovery+ and Hayu, as well as 135 channels and full Sky coverage of the Premier League and EFL.

Sky broadcasts more than 1,400 live matches across the Premier League, EFL and more with at least 215 live from the top flight alongside Formula 1, darts and golf.

“You have the same players and people want to change them, but when you change them and it doesn’t work out, you want those players back. People want new names, they want excitement and different people with the shirt, and that’s normal. H has coped very well with that.

“He’s been very important in many moments for us, and he deserves this recognition from the club because he’s very important for the team and the dressing room. Losing someone of his experience and his voice for a season when things will change, you still need some pillars at the club.”

Michael Carrick told Sky Sports: “We’re delighted that Harry’s agreed, and it’s been done, and I think stability and consistency [are] important. He’s been through everything at this club. He knows what it’s all about.

“The way he handles himself, his character and he’s been terrific since I’ve [come] back and credit to him for that, really. I think the experience is important. We got a really good mix within the squad of some really talented and high-end ability-wise, younger players.”

Carrick added: “We have a good number of players in what we kind of class as the peak years. And Harry’s obviously at that stage where he is getting a little bit further down the line in terms of career.

“But it doesn’t diminish the importance of what he can be and the example and the understanding [he has]. And a little bit of just knowing what it feels like to be here and so to have him around for longer is fantastic.”

Jason Wilcox said: “Harry represents the mentality and resilience required to perform for United. He is the ultimate professional who brings invaluable experience and leadership to our young, ambitious squad. Harry is completely determined to help United to achieve regular and sustained success.”

Maguire has the backing of all the important figures at United.

The Indiana Fever wrap up their 2026 preseason schedule Saturday night against the Nigerian national team.

Caitlin Clark was not listed on the injury report entering the game. Concerns arose about her health and immediate availability after she collided with a Dallas Wings player in Thursday’s preseason matchup. She limped to the bench but appeared to walk it off during a replay review that resulted in a Flagrant 1 call.

Clark returned to make two free throws before spending the remainder of the game on the sideline.

She finished with a team-high 21 points. Clark made two of her three attempted three-pointers, while knocking down 11 of 13 from the free throw line. She also had two rebounds, four assists and one steal in the contest.

Two days later, the two-time All-Star is available for Saturday night’s game despite the injury scare.

A string of injuries sidelined Clark in 2025, limiting the NCAA’s all-time scoring leader to 13 games in her second WNBA season. The injury woes last year included a groin strain followed by an ankle bone bruise.

Ahead of the WNBA’s milestone 30th season, ESPN ranked the league’s top 50 active players. Back-to-back MVP and defending WNBA champion A’ja Wilson led the list at No. 1. She was also ESPN’s top-ranked player entering 2025. Clark was the No. 10 player on the list.

Indiana appears to be getting healthy ahead of the regular season, with Fever center Aliyah Boston expected to make her debut Saturday. She missed the first two exhibition games after suffering an injury while playing in Unrivaled. Fever guard Ty Harris was also cleared to play Saturday.

The Fever open the regular season on May 9 in Dallas against the Wings.

Fernando Mendoza responded to a question Saturday about whether he will visit President Donald Trump at the White House to celebrate the Indiana Hoosiers’ historic college football championship.

Mendoza said that he “believed” the scheduled date of the visit, May 11, was the first day of the Las Vegas Raiders’ organized team activities (OTAs). But he was incorrect, as the Raiders’ OTAs don’t start until May 18.

“If it is on the first day of OTAs, like I said, I’m on the bottom of the totem pole here, I got to prove myself, I can’t miss practice,” Mendoza told reporters at a Raiders press conference on Saturday. “As a rookie, I don’t think that’s a good look. I want to try to best serve my teammates, and I don’t think that would be accomplishing that goal.”

The Raiders don’t have anything in their offseason program scheduled for May 11.

The other college football champions who went on to be the No. 1 overall picks, Trevor Lawrence and Joe Burrow, each visited Trump at the White House in the president’s first term. Lawrence visited in 2019 and Burrow went in 2020.

Now, all eyes turn to Mendoza, who etched his name in college football history and the hearts of many football fans, to see if he will make the trip once realizing that OTAs are not on the same day as the visit.

Gunther’s favor from Paul Heyman revealed on SmackDown,  Brock Lesnar has officially retired?

Published

on

Paul Heyman was spotted by eagle-eyed WWE fans on SmackDown this week, in the background of a backstage segment between Fraxiom and R-Truth.

Heyman was seen talking with Adam Pearce, but this was the only time The Oracle made an appearance this week. It seems that this was a significant moment on the show, since this later led to Gunther’s return to the brand.

Gunther was on RAW when he was battling Seth Rollins ahead of WrestleMania, but it seems that Heyman had something to do with his move over to SmackDown and his shot at Cody Rhodes.

Real reason behind Reigns vs. Fatu revealed – Check here!

There is a belief that WWE was showing fans that this was the favor that Gunther asked for from Heyman, which could also confirm that Brock Lesnar has retired.

Gunther vs Brock Lesnar was believed to be Paul Heyman’s favor

There was major speculation that Gunther would push for Brock Lesnar to make his return so that he could be added to his retirement list, but it seems that this isn’t the case.

Gunther could have instead asked for Paul Heyman to talk to Pearce and help him get a shot for the WWE Championship, since Roman Reigns is busy with Jacob Fatu on RAW. Cody Rhodes appears to be a better target for The Ring General, and now he has his eyes on the prize ahead of Backlash.

Gunther protected Heyman from Seth Rollins when Bron Breakker and Bronson Reed were sidelined, which left him indebted to the Austrian star, and now it appears that he has decided to cash in.

There is no other reason why Pearce and Paul Heyman would need to speak, since The Vision is on RAW. WWE also made a point of showing the two men talking to make it clear it’s connected. This could be confirmed if the two men have a backstage segment next week, since Gunther should have his shot at the World Championship confirmed for Backlash momentarily.

It will be interesting to see if Gunther can dethrone Rhodes or if Backlash will see the return of Randy Orton, who could still have a bone to pick with Rhodes after WrestleMania 42.
