MLB Roundup: Baty hits first career slam to spark Mets’ win over Braves

Published

on

ATLANTA — Brett Baty hit the first grand slam of his career and the New York Mets held off the Atlanta Braves 8-5 on Monday night for their sixth win in seven games.

Francisco Lindor was 3 for 5 with a 420-foot home run, Jared Young had two hits and two RBIs, and Bo Bichette drove in a run and scored.

Daniel Duarte (1-0) earned the win with two scoreless innings of relief, and Kodai Senga pitched a scoreless ninth for his first career save. Regular closer Devin Williams was placed on the 15-day injured list earlier in the day.

Baty’s grand slam came in the first inning off Bryce Elder (8-7), who was unable to follow up on his past three starts where he gave up just one run each game.

TORONTO — Charles McAdoo homered and Jameson Taillon pitched four scoreless innings before leaving with an injury as Toronto beat Boston to hand the Red Sox their third loss in a row.

Boston’s skid follows a nine-game winning streak that capped a franchise-record string of 27 victories in 30 games.

McAdoo hit his second major league home run in nine career games leading off the fifth. The 24-year-old rookie made his first start at third base in place of Kazuma Okamoto, a late scratch due to a bruised left knee.

Taillon gave up one hit and walked three before exiting with forearm discomfort. It was his second start for the Blue Jays and first at home since being acquired from the Chicago Cubs in a trade on Aug. 2.

Simeon Woods-Richardson (2-7) replaced Taillon to begin the fifth and gave up one run in three innings for the win. Louis Varland pitched a scoreless ninth for his 25th save.

MINNEAPOLIS — Austin Martin had four hits including a home run, Josh Bell also homered and Minnesota beat Baltimore.

Dean Kremer (2-4), in his second start with Minnesota since being brought over from Baltimore at the trade deadline, allowed one run and one hit in seven innings against his former team. He struck out seven.

Martin led off the third with his homer to left-center field to open the scoring. He singled in the first and reached on a bunt single in the seventh, part of a five-run inning for the Twins. He added another single in the eighth.

Ryan Jeffers singled in the seventh to score Martin and Royce Lewis was walked to set up Bell’s three-run shot that made it 7-1. Jeffers hit an RBI double in the eighth inning, and Lewis delivered a single to make it 9-3.

ST. LOUIS — Edmundo Sosa drove in three runs and Kyle Schwarber reached base four times as Philadelphia beat St. Louis.

Phillies right-hander Andrew Painter took a no-hitter into the sixth before running out of steam. Iván Herrera’s one-out double broke up the no-hit bid and Alec Burleson followed with a two-run single that chased Painter after 93 pitches.

Painter (2-8) allowed two runs on two hits, walked three and struck out six in 5 1/3 innings as the Phillies won their second straight and for the seventh time in 10 games. Jonathan Bowland earned his first save in four chances.

Brandon Marsh singled and scored on a Hunter Dobbins throwing error, and Sosa followed with an RBI single to give the Phillies a 2-0 lead in the second inning.

Schwarber, who leads the National League with 35 homers, singled and scored in the fifth, and doubled home Garrett Stubbs in the seventh to add to the lead. Schwarber also walked twice.

DIAMONDBACKS 9, ROCKIES 0

PHOENIX — Nolan Areando hit a grand slam in the first inning against his former team, Michael Soroka had a successful return on the mound and the Arizona Diamondbacks jumped out to a big early lead for a 9-0 win over the Colorado Rockies on Monday night.

The D-backs (64-56) moved to eight games above .500 for the first time this season.

Arenado hammered a fastball up in the zone from Gabriel Hughes over the left-field fence for his eighth career grand slam and second of the season. The eight-time All-Star played his first eight seasons in the big leagues with the Rockies.

The D-backs pushed their lead to 7-0 in the second with three more runs. Corbin Carroll had a run-scoring double, Ketel Marte brought home another run on a single and Geraldo Perdomo scored on a wild pitch.

Gabriel Moreno and Ryan Waldschmidt had two hits apiece.

Soroka — who missed nearly two months with a strained left glute — threw 4 1/3 scoreless innings in his return. The veteran right-hander gave up three hits, walked three and struck out four.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Jeremy Peña hit a go-ahead single with none out in the 10th, Isaac Paredes added a two-run double one out later and the Houston Astros rallied for a 6-3 victory over the San Francisco Giants on Monday night.

LaMonte Wade Jr. led off the 10th with Cam Smith on second as the automatic runner, and Smith moved to third on a wild pitch by Jason Foley (0-1).

Josh Hader (4-1) pitched two perfect innings for the win.

Smith hit a tying RBI single with two outs in the ninth against closer Dylan Smith after connecting for his 16th home run in the seventh.

Drew Gilbert hit a go-ahead home run in the bottom of the seventh after an earlier sacrifice fly and Jung Hoo Lee connected in the fifth, but the Giants blew it.

WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Junior Caminero hit a three-run homer in an eight-run eighth inning as the Tampa Bay Rays rallied for a 10-6 victory over the Athletics on Monday night.

Caminero hit his 34th of the year after Yandy Díaz and Jonathan Aranda both singled to kick off the inning, bringing the Rays within one. Chandler Simpson’s RBI single tied the game, and Taylor Walls hit a two-run single to give Tampa Bay an 8-6 lead. Díaz hit a sacrifice fly and Aranda hit an RBI single in his second at-bat of the inning to make it 10-6.

Rays reliever Chris Roycroft (1-0) pitched the seventh inning, giving up three hits and three earned runs. Starter Freddy Peralta pitched the first six innings, with five strikeouts, three earned runs and a walk.

Díaz homered on the second pitch of the game to make it 1-0. The A’s responded with an RBI double by Tyler Soderstrom to tie it, followed by Soderstrom stealing home later in the inning to make it 2-1.

Zack Gelof hit a solo home run in the fifth inning for the Athletics in his first game back after being on the injured list with a right knee laceration he sustained against the Detroit Tigers on July 9. He hit an RBI double in the seventh inning.

Jeff McNeil hit a sacrifice fly and Jacob Wilson doubled in the seventh to give the A’s a 6-2 lead.

Jose Suarez (1-4) gave up four runs while getting just one out in the eighth, after Seth Johnson was charged with four runs and failed to record an out. Jacob Lopez pitched the first seven innings, allowing two runs with five strikeouts and a walk.

LOS ANGELES — Tarik Skubal yielded three runs over five innings in his home debut for the Dodgers, and Shohei Ohtani scored the go-ahead run in the seventh while Los Angeles rallied for only its second victory in 10 games, 6-5 over the Kansas City Royals on Monday night.

Skubal allowed four hits and struck out six in the back-to-back Cy Young Award winner’s second start for his new team since arriving from Detroit in the majors’ biggest deadline trade. Jac Caglianone homered and drove in all three runs off the Dodgers’ vaunted new left-hander, who left trailing 3-2.

Max Muncy hit a three-run double in the sixth on his bobblehead night for the Dodgers, but Kyle Isbel responded with a tying two-run homer in the seventh for Kansas City.

Ohtani then singled and stole his first base since May 16 before he scored on Freddie Freeman’s single, putting Los Angeles ahead to stay in this back-and-forth homestand opener.

Ohtani also had an early RBI double for the Dodgers, who improved to 8-12 since July 19.

SAN DIEGO — Jackson Merrill hit a two-run homer to center field in the seventh inning and Mason Miller earned his NL-leading 30th save to give the San Diego Padres a 3-2 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers on Monday night.

With the Padres trailing 2-1 in the seventh, Ty France singled with one out and Merrill followed with his 19th homer on an 83 mph changeup from starter Logan Henderson (6-2). Merrill has nine homers since the All-Star break.

San Diego has won 13 of its last 17 games. The Padres remained a game out of the final National League playoff spot.

Henderson had won his last six decisions over seven starts before taking the loss versus San Diego. In 6 1/3 innings, he gave up three runs and five hits while striking out seven.

San Diego reliever Yuki Matsui (3-1) got the victory, pitching a scoreless seventh inning. Miller worked a scoreless ninth.

ANAHEIM, Calif. — Brandon Nimmo singled home the go-ahead run in the 10th inning and the Texas Rangers beat the Los Angeles Angels 4-1 on Monday night to snap a five-game road losing streak.

Texas has won five of its last six overall and is a half-game behind AL West-leading Houston.

Nimmo and Elias Díaz each finished with two hits and an RBI.

Peyton Gray (6-0) pitched a 1-2-3 ninth to earn the win. Jacob Latz worked a scoreless 10th for his 23rd save.

Luke Murphy (0-1) came on to start the 10th for the Angels. Wyatt Langford drew a leadoff walk and Corey Seager singled to load the bases. Ezequiel Duran popped out, Blake Weiman replaced Murphy and Nimmo’s line drive to right field drove in automatic runner Nicky Lopez before Jake Burger’s two-run single capped the scoring.

WWE star Royce Keys “out indefinitely” despite not being injured

Published

on

The August 3 edition of WWE Raw saw the main event of Jacob Fatu vs Royce Keys end in a surprising angle, where Fatu brutalized Keys, causing him to bleed from the mouth as Fatu applied the Tongan Death Grip post-match. Then, on last night’s August 10 episode of the show, commentator Michael Cole confirmed that Keys would be “out indefinitely” following the angle.

This has sparked speculation as to whether there are real behind-the-scenes reasons as to why Royce Keys has been taken off of TV with a kayfabe angle like this, but Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter has reported that Keys is not injured at all, and it’s currently unclear when he’ll return to WWE programming.

Jimmy Uso leaps toward Royce Keys during WWE Friday Night SmackDown at Paycom Center in Oklahoma City, Friday, July 10, 2026.

Royce Keys debuted for WWE at the 2026 Royal Rumble in January, making the jump from All Elite Wrestling, where he was known as Powerhouse Hobbs. He wrestled a number of dark matches before making his return to TV, and most recently wrestled at SummerSlam, where he and the team of LA Knight and Solo Sikoa were victorious against The Bloodline.

The three members of that team have remained involved with The Bloodline since. LA Knight is now targeting World Heavyweight Champion Roman Reigns, though it’s currently unclear when that match will happen, and Solo Sikoa has been forced to rejoin The Bloodline following a loss to Jey Uso on the August 10 episode of Raw.

Hopefully Royce Keys won’t be out of action for too long and can make the most of his debut year in WWE.

Man United ‘ready to do something Barcelona are refusing’ after £20m transfer agreement

Published

on

Manchester United have already added six new faces to Michael Carrick’s squad this summer, but the club continues to be linked with a host of names

Manchester United are reportedly ready to swoop for Jorge Salinas – as Barcelona are unwilling to pay his release clause. Salinas, 19, came through the ranks at Real Racing Club de Santander before making his first-team debut back in 2024.

He has since established himself as one of the most talented young defenders in Spanish football and has been linked with both Barca and United. However, while the Reds, according to Spanish publication SPORT, are willing to pay Salinas’ €16m (£14m) release clause, Barca have no intention of doing so.

But the report, via Sport Witness, also claims that Atletico Madrid are waiting for Matteo Ruggeri to complete a move to Aston Villa before making a move for Salinas. It is claimed that Villa have agreed an €18m plus €6m bonuses deal, which works out at £20m, with Los Rojiblancos for Ruggeri.

But despite the continued speculation around Salinas’ future, Racing boss Jorge Salinas claimed earlier this week that the defender, along with Gustavo Puerta, don’t want to leave the club this summer.

He said: “Their professionalism doesn’t surprise me. What surprises me is that people are constantly talking about the departure of two of our players [Salinas and Puerta], when they have contracts and are our players.”

Before he added: “They’re very important to us. I don’t want them to leave. And they show every day that they don’t either.

“But we know how this world works and there are release clauses. If a team comes along and pays the clause, they cease to be our players.”

Speaking last week, Racing sporting director Chema Aragon made similar comments, but he did admit that his club would be powerless if a ‘giant’ such as United and Barca came in with a significant bid for Salinas.

“There’s little you can do if a giant appears,” Aragan said. “We value the assets we have, we consider them important.

“For the club, at this time, there is no other option than to try to strengthen the team and not weaken it by losing stars. The reality is that the club that wants him has to come along with an offer.”

Who is Amit Bhatia? Man leading Bezos, Saverin bid for Liverpool stake | Business

Published

on

British-Indian businessman Amit Bhatia is at the centre of a consortium that is closing in on a potentially major investment in Liverpool, with Amazon founder Jeff Bezos and Facebook co-founder Eduardo Saverin among the high-profile names backing the proposed deal.

The group is in talks with Fenway Sports Group (FSG), Liverpool’s controlling owner since 2010, over a significant minority stake in the Premier League club. While reports have suggested the consortium could acquire around 30% of Liverpool, the final size of the investment could be slightly higher.

The reported transaction could value Liverpool at around £4.4 billion ($6 billion), with the consortium’s investment potentially worth about £1.35 billion ($1.8 billion).

For Bhatia, however, Liverpool would not represent his first major involvement in football. The 46-year-old has spent almost two decades around English football, most notably through his association with Queens Park Rangers (QPR).

Who is Amit Bhatia?

Bhatia is a British-Indian businessman and investor who has interests across several sectors, including technology, media, property, real estate, consumer retail and healthcare.

He began his professional career in investment banking at Morgan Stanley before moving into entrepreneurship and investment. He is associated with AyBe Capital and has also been involved with property investment firm Summix Capital. He is also chairman of British construction company Breedon Group.

His connection to one of India’s most prominent business families comes through his marriage to Vanisha Mittal, daughter of steel magnate Lakshmi Mittal.

That relationship has also placed Bhatia within a family with growing interests in global sport.

Lakshmi Mittal has long been one of India’s wealthiest businessmen, while the wider Mittal family has increasingly expanded its presence in sports investment. Aditya Mittal, Bhatia’s brother-in-law, recently invested in the Boston Celtics, while the family has also entered the Indian Premier League through Rajasthan Royals.

But Bhatia’s own football journey began long before the current Liverpool talks.

From QPR to a potential Liverpool investment

Bhatia entered English football in 2007 through Queens Park Rangers. He initially became involved as a representative of his father-in-law after Mittal acquired a stake in the Championship club alongside Bernie Ecclestone and Flavio Briatore.

He subsequently became QPR’s vice-chairman before taking over as chairman, a position he held until 2023.

During his association with the club, QPR returned to the Premier League and spent multiple seasons in England’s top flight.

Bhatia’s relationship with the club continued until July 2026, when he stepped down from the QPR board and transferred his stake to majority owner Ruben Gnanalingam.

His departure came just weeks before his name emerged at the centre of discussions over a much larger and more valuable English football asset.

Who else is in the Liverpool consortium?

Bhatia is leading a group that includes two of the world’s wealthiest technology entrepreneurs: Jeff Bezos and Eduardo Saverin.

Jeff Bezos

Bezos, 62, founded Amazon in 1994 after leaving investment bank D.E. Shaw. What began as an online bookseller eventually became one of the world’s largest technology and e-commerce companies.

He stepped down as Amazon’s chief executive in 2021 but remains its executive chairman. He also owns The Washington Post and founded aerospace company Blue Origin.

Forbes’ real-time estimates put Bezos’ fortune at roughly $280 billion, making him one of the world’s richest individuals.

A Liverpool investment would mark a significant new chapter in Bezos’ sporting interests. He has previously explored opportunities to invest in American football, including interest around NFL franchises, but has not previously completed a major football club investment.

Eduardo Saverin

Saverin, 44, is best known as one of Facebook’s co-founders. Born in Brazil, he later moved to the United States before relocating to Singapore.

He has since become a prominent technology investor and co-founded venture capital firm B Capital with Raj Ganguly.

Saverin is also no stranger to football ownership discussions. He was part of the consortium that backed Steve Pagliuca’s unsuccessful attempt to buy Chelsea in 2022.

His potential Liverpool investment would therefore represent another attempt to enter the ownership structure of a major English football club.

How big is the proposed Liverpool deal?

The exact terms have not been formally announced, but reports suggest the consortium is targeting a stake of around 30% or potentially slightly more.

The reported valuation of Liverpool is approximately £4.4 billion ($6 billion). At that valuation, a 30% stake would be worth around £1.32 billion, broadly in line with reports that the transaction could be worth about £1.35 billion.

However, the proposed investment should not be confused with a full takeover.

FSG would retain control of Liverpool if the consortium acquired a minority stake of around 30%. The transaction would instead bring a group of extremely wealthy investors into the club’s ownership structure.

FSG has previously made clear that it is open to outside investment if it believes the arrangement is in Liverpool’s best interests.

Why is FSG selling part of Liverpool?

FSG has controlled Liverpool since October 2010, when it acquired the club for around £300 million.

Under its ownership, Liverpool have undergone a dramatic transformation both on and off the pitch.

The club won the Premier League title, Champions League and other major trophies, while Anfield was expanded and the club’s commercial revenues increased substantially.

Liverpool have also adopted a largely self-sustaining financial model, with revenue generated by the club being used to fund operations and investment.

That does not mean FSG needs to sell Liverpool.

Instead, the proposed transaction could allow FSG to monetise part of the enormous increase in Liverpool’s value while simultaneously bringing additional capital and influential investors into the club. FSG has followed a similar approach before.

In 2021, RedBird Capital Partners acquired an 11.5% stake in FSG for around $735 million. In 2023, Dynasty Equity purchased a small stake directly in Liverpool.

The Dynasty investment reportedly helped fund infrastructure projects, including the redevelopment of the Anfield Road Stand and the repurchase of the Melwood training ground.

Will FSG remain in control?

If the reported deal goes through as a minority investment, yes. A stake of around 30% would leave FSG with a controlling position at Liverpool. However, the arrival of such a powerful consortium could still have implications for how the club is run.

Bhatia, Bezos and Saverin would collectively bring enormous financial resources, business networks and commercial expertise to the ownership structure.

The size of the proposed investment also raises a natural question: could a minority investment eventually become something bigger?

There is currently no indication that FSG is preparing to sell control of Liverpool. But a substantial minority stake would give the new investors a significant financial interest in the club and potentially increase their influence over time.

For now, however, the reported transaction remains a strategic minority investment rather than an outright takeover.

Why would Bezos and other billionaires want to invest in football?

Football clubs are increasingly being viewed by wealthy investors as long-term global assets rather than simply sporting businesses.

Liverpool is particularly attractive because it combines a globally recognised brand, a huge international fanbase, regular participation in elite European competitions and significant commercial revenues.

Unlike many traditional businesses, top-level sport also offers something increasingly scarce in the digital economy: live, appointment-based global audiences.

Fans still tune in at a specific time to watch Liverpool play, creating a valuable platform for broadcasters, sponsors and commercial partners. There is also a scarcity factor.

There are only a limited number of clubs with Liverpool’s history, global following, commercial reach and ability to compete at the highest level. That makes established elite football clubs difficult assets to replicate.

How wealthy are the potential investors?

The consortium brings extraordinary financial firepower. Bezos is estimated to have a net worth of around $280 billion, putting him among the three richest people in the world.

Eduardo Saverin’s fortune is estimated at around $33 billion.

Bhatia himself is not a billionaire on the scale of Bezos or Saverin, but his position within the Mittal family and his own business interests give him substantial experience in investment and sport. His father-in-law Lakshmi Mittal is estimated to be worth more than $30 billion.

The combination gives the consortium an unusual mix of technology wealth, investment experience, global business connections and football expertise.

What could the investment mean for Liverpool?

The immediate impact would be financial and strategic rather than a change in ownership control. Liverpool could potentially gain access to new commercial relationships and investment networks through the consortium.

A group containing Bezos and Saverin could also strengthen the club’s connections with technology, media and global investment markets.

That could become increasingly relevant as football clubs seek to expand their digital businesses, international commercial operations and global fan engagement. The investment could also provide FSG with greater financial flexibility while allowing it to retain control.

However, there is no guarantee that a large minority investment would translate directly into a huge transfer-market spending spree.

Liverpool operate under financial regulations, and modern football’s financial rules limit the extent to which owners can simply inject unlimited amounts of money into the playing squad.

Liverpool’s financial position is already strong

The potential investment comes at a time when Liverpool are already one of the world’s most valuable football clubs. The club recently reported record revenues of more than £700 million and ranked fifth in the Deloitte Football Money League.

Liverpool have also demonstrated a willingness to spend heavily in the transfer market, including an investment of close to £450 million in a single summer window.

That means the proposed transaction is not necessarily about rescuing a club in financial difficulty. Instead, it could be about strengthening an already powerful sporting and commercial operation.

For FSG, it also represents an opportunity to realise some of the enormous value created during its 15-plus years at Anfield.

Could this eventually become a full takeover?

That remains one of the biggest unanswered questions.

A 30%-plus investment would not give the consortium outright control, but it would make Bhatia, Bezos and Saverin major stakeholders in one of football’s biggest clubs.

Whether that eventually leads to a larger investment would depend on several factors, including FSG’s long-term plans, the consortium’s appetite for greater control and the future valuation of Liverpool. For now, there is no evidence that FSG intends to walk away from Liverpool.

In fact, the proposed structure would allow FSG to retain control while sharing the financial exposure and future growth of the club with new partners.

Bhatia’s sporting connections go beyond Liverpool

Bhatia’s experience at QPR could be particularly relevant to his role in the proposed consortium.

His near two-decade association with English football means he understands the business and regulatory environment surrounding the Premier League in a way that Bezos and Saverin do not.

His family also has a growing presence in global sport.

The Mittal family’s involvement in the Boston Celtics and Rajasthan Royals reflects a broader trend of Indian business families investing in major international sporting properties.

For Bhatia, Liverpool would therefore represent the biggest sporting investment of his career and potentially place him at the centre of one of the most significant ownership developments in English football in recent years.

What happens next?

FSG and the Bhatia-led consortium are continuing discussions, with reports suggesting an announcement could come soon.

The precise size of the stake, valuation, investment structure and rights attached to the new shareholders will determine the significance of the transaction.

If completed, it would bring together three exceptionally wealthy and globally connected investors around one of football’s most recognisable clubs. For Liverpool, it would mean FSG retaining control while gaining powerful new partners.

For Bhatia, it would represent a remarkable progression from his involvement at QPR to a potential stake in one of the biggest clubs in world football.

And for Bezos and Saverin, it would offer entry into a sporting asset whose value has grown dramatically over the past decade and a half.

The proposed deal, therefore, is more than a simple minority share sale. It is a meeting point between football, global wealth, technology and investment, with Liverpool sitting at the centre of it.

Who Stands to Gain From the Liverpool Deal?

If the proposed investment goes through, the benefits will extend well beyond the Amit Bhatia-led consortium. Fenway Sports Group (FSG) stands to be the biggest winner, with its valuation of Liverpool soaring since its 2010 acquisition while retaining control of the club.

LeBron James, who holds a minority stake in Liverpool, could also see a substantial increase in the value of his investment if the club’s valuation rises to the reported $6 billion level.

Jeff Bezos and Amazon could gain strategically too, as the billionaire’s involvement could strengthen the company’s links with elite live sport and potentially open the door to future Premier League broadcasting opportunities. For Liverpool, the deal could bring fresh capital, global business connections and additional commercial opportunities.

The proposed investment therefore has the potential to create winners across ownership, existing shareholders, media and the wider sports-business ecosystem.

Left-hander Cody Bradford will make his first road start in almost two years Tuesday night when the Texas Rangers continue a four-game series with the Los Angeles Angels in Anaheim, Calif.

Bradford (0-0, 0.00 ERA), who is 1-1 with a 5.02 ERA in three career starts against Los Angeles, last started a road game on Sept. 25, 2024. That was the final night game that the Las Vegas-bound Athletics played at the Oakland Coliseum before moving into their temporary home in West Sacramento, Calif. The Rangers won that contest, 5-1.

Bradford, bothered by elbow issues that eventually required internal brace surgery in June 2025, made his major league return to the mound in a 6-0 victory over the visiting San Francisco Giants on Wednesday. He left after throwing 70 pitches over 4 1/3 shutout innings, allowing five hits and two walks while striking out five.

“Six-hundred-seventy-nine days since I last pitched, back when there was a team still in Oakland,” Bradford said. “My goal today was just get through 70 pitches and see how far I could get in the game and try and just soak in the moment of being back.”

Even though he didn’t get the required five innings to pick up the win, Bradford was pleased with the results.

“It was so exciting,” Bradford said. “It kind of felt like a debut again with just the excitement of friends and family reaching out except I’ve been here before and I’ve already done it. I know what it takes now, and to kind of lean on that experience was really helpful.”

Bradford played a key role his rookie season in 2023 in helping pitch Texas to a World Series title, compiling a 1-0 record and 1.17 ERA in five relief appearances. The Rangers are hoping he can help them get back to the playoffs in a tight American League West race that sees them a half-game behind the first-place Houston Astros but 1 1/2 games in front of the Minnesota Twins and Detroit Tigers for the final wild-card spot.

Right-hander Ryan Johnson (2-6, 7.11), a 2024 second-round pick out of Dallas Baptist, will try and help the last-place Angels play the spoiler role against his hometown team. Johnson, who went 0-0 with a 3.86 ERA in two relief appearances against the Rangers in 2025, comes in off a 4-1 victory at Baltimore on Thursday that saw him allow one run on three hits in 4 2/3 innings with five walks and one strikeout.

The Angels bring a three-game losing streak into the contest after dropping Monday’s series opener, 4-1, in 10 innings. Brandon Nimmo drove in the go-ahead run with a bases-loaded single, and Jake Burger followed with a two-run single to lead the Rangers.

Mike Trout gave Los Angeles a 1-0 lead in the first inning with his 20th homer, a 418-foot drive to left-center. It was the 424th home run of his career, moving him into a tie with Edwin Encarnacion for 54th place on the all-time homer list, and also his 49th career home run in 204 games against Texas.

The Angels managed just five hits after Trout’s blast and finished 0-for-7 with runners in scoring position.

“Definitely a tough day with the bats,” Los Angeles manager Kurt Suzuki said. “Really couldn’t get anything going. (Texas starter MacKenzie) Gore threw the ball well, but at the end of the day, we’ve got to try and string some at-bats together. It’s been tough to do at times, but we’ve just gotta keep on trucking.”

Alex Eala getting Serena Williams ‘star status’ comparison from ex-Brit No. 1 leaves fans shocked: “Absolutely not”

Published

on

Former British pro Greg Rusedski’s comparison of Alex Eala’s newfound stardom rivaling that of Serena Williams left fans aghast. Eala was already pegged as a future superstar once she won the girls’ singles title at the US Open 2022.

The young Filipina made headlines with her wins over Iga Swiatek and Madison Keys en route to the semifinals of the Miami Open 2025. However, consistency evaded her for the rest of the season. She has remedied that this year with some incredible results.

Eala ousted defending champion Swiatek to reach the fourth round of a Major for the first time at Wimbledon. She then captured her maiden WTA title in Washington a fortnight ago, beating the likes of Naomi Osaka and Jessica Pegula along the way.

The 21-year-old’s rapid rise has led to a massive congregation of fans from her home country coming out to cheer for her at every tournament. Her recent string of impressive results has increased her stature in general. Rusedski observed the same and commented about it on a recent episode of his podcast, Off Court with Greg. He compared Eala’s stardom to that of 23-time Major champion, Serena Williams.

“There’s only one other person that I can compare to her sort of star status. It’s Serena Williams,” Rusedski said.

Rusedski’s comments were shared on social media. Fans felt that he was jumping the gun by comparing Eala to Williams. They were quick to point out the same in the comments on Instagram.

“Let’s calm down,” wrote one fan.

“Only in the Phillipines lol,” commented another fan.

“I absolutely disagree. This is way too much hype,” stated a fan.

“Absolutely not comparable not even close,” opined another user.

“This is a stretch! A BIG one!” stated one fan.

“I’m a Filipino fan but I think not yet in there lets keep her going and winning some,” wrote one fan.

“I respectfully disagree. Serena, Sharapova, Kournikova, Gauff and Osaka got more hype than Eala but Alex is on her way,” stated another fan.

“Eala has a long way to go before she gets any real clout. There are plenty of other WTA stars in front of her,” commented one user.

Eala recently competed at the Canadian Open, where her second-round match had to be moved to a bigger stadium due to an increase in demand. Her campaign came to an end with a fourth-round loss to Belinda Bencic.

Alex Eala carried the momentum from her title-winning run at the Mubadala DC Open to a fourth-round finish at the Canadian Open. She will aim to fine-tune her preparation for the US Open with another good showing at her upcoming tournament, the Cincinnati Open 2026.

This will be Eala’s main draw debut at the Cincinnati Open. She will be seeded 17th, and will receive a first-round bye. The tournament will take place from August 13-23.

Eala has performed quite well on hardcourts at the WTA 1000 level this year. She made the quarterfinals in Dubai, and reached the fourth round of the Indian Wells Open, the Miami Open, and the Canadian Open. She will aim to sustain this form in Cincinnati as well.
