MLB roundup: Nationals extend A’s losing streak to 10 in 23-4 beatdown

The Nationals opened the scoring with a three-run third before busting the game wide open with four-plus runs in the fifth through seventh innings. That proved to be more than enough for Cade Cavalli (6-4), who gave up two runs and four hits over six innings.
Chaparro went 4-for-5 with a walk and four runs and Daylen Lile and Harry Ford each homered for the Nationals, who set a season high for runs, matching the second-most in franchise history. Curtis Mead was 4-for-6 with four runs, three RBIs and three doubles, and Nasim Nunez had three hits and three runs.
Tyler Soderstrom hit a two-run homer and Shea Langeliers belted a solo shot for the Athletics, who lost their 10th consecutive game. Gage Jump (3-5) of the A’s allowed four runs (three earned) and four hits in 3 2/3 innings before their bullpen was hit hard by Washington’s lineup.
Royals 7, Padres 6 (10 innings)
Carter Jensen’s two-run, walk-off single capped a four-run 10th inning which helped Kansas City rally for a victory over visiting San Diego.
The Padres scored three times in the top of the 10th, beginning with Miguel Andujar’s third double of the night down the right field line against Lucas Erceg (4-3) to score the automatic runner. Fernando Tatis Jr. followed with an RBI single, and Xander Bogaerts made it 6-3 with a sacrifice fly.
However, Michael Massey’s third hit of the game drove in the first run of the bottom of the 10th off Kyle Hart (0-2). Isaac Collins’ RBI groundout left runners on second and third for the Royals, then Jensen delivered his third hit through a drawn-in left side of the infield to score two and snap Kansas City’s five-game skid.
Red Sox 10, Rays 0 (Game 1)
Jake Bennett threw six scoreless innings before a six-run sixth allowed Boston to score a lopsided win over visiting Tampa Bay in the first game of a day-night doubleheader.
Masataka Yoshida and Carlos Narvaez each homered as part of three-hit games and Caleb Durbin went 3-for-4 for the Red Sox, who banged out 15 hits.
Bennett (5-3) allowed just one hit and one walk while striking out three. Alec Gamboa went the rest of the way, allowing just two hits over the final three innings for his first career save. Rays starter Griffin Jax (5-7) struck out six but yielded seven runs in five-plus innings.
Red Sox 5, Rays 3 (Game 2)
Wilyer Abreu hit home runs in his first two at-bats as Boston completed a doubleheader sweep with another win over Tampa Bay, extending its winning streak to 11 games.
Willson Contreras also homered for the Red Sox, who won a bullpen game with six relievers combining to throw 6 2/3 scoreless innings with four hits behind Eduardo Rivera, who allowed three runs over the first 2 1/3 innings. Greg Weissert (2-2) got the win, and Aroldis Chapman pitched a clean ninth for his 20th save.
Junior Caminero, who hit a solo home run in the third, and Jonny DeLuca both had multi-hit games for the Rays. Mason Englert (0-3) was tagged for five runs and eight hits over five innings before the Tampa Bay bullpen combined for three no-hit innings of relief work.
Dodgers 2, Yankees 1
Max Muncy hit a go-ahead two-run homer with nobody out in the seventh inning against Gerrit Cole and Los Angeles earned a victory over New York in the first meeting at Yankee Stadium between the teams since Game 5 of the 2024 World Series.
The Dodgers snapped a three-game losing streak in their first trip to the Bronx since scoring five unearned runs off Cole in the fifth inning of Game 5 to clinch the first of their back-to-back titles. Roki Sasaki allowed an unearned run on five hits in 5 2/3 innings for the Dodgers.
Cole (3-5) entered the seventh at 90 pitches and started the inning by walking Mookie Betts. Manager Aaron Boone visited the mound and kept Cole in the game. Muncy fouled off three pitches before ending the at-bat by hammering Cole’s 2-2 slider about halfway up the second deck in right field. Cole had held him hitless in five previous encounters. Cole allowed two runs on four hits in six-plus innings.
Braves 15, Rangers 1
Drake Baldwin, Matt Olson and Austin Riley all homered and Chris Sale pitched seven scoreless innings to lead Atlanta to a win over visiting Texas in the opener of a three-game set.
Sale (10-6) became the 10th National League pitcher to reach double-digit wins. He allowed only two hits, never allowed a runner to reach third base and struck out six. Sale also recorded his 2,700th punchout. Ozzie Albies, Michael Harris II, Mauricio Dubon and Jim Jarvis also pitched in with two hits apiece.
Rangers starter Cal Quantrill (3-2) was roughed up for six runs on 11 hits, both season highs, in four innings. His ERA spiked from 3.11 to 3.93 due to the rough outing. Right-hander Emiliano Teodo followed with 1 2/3 innings and allowed two runs in his major league debut.
White Sox 12, Blue Jays 4
Braden Montgomery had four RBIs and Colson Montgomery added three RBIs as visiting Chicago throttled Toronto.
Sam Antonacci hit a two-run home run for the White Sox, who saw starter Anthony Kay allow two runs and two hits over four innings. Reliever Tyler Schweitzer (1-0) allowed one infield hit and a walk over the final three innings to earn his first major league win.
Luis Urias, George Springer and Brandon Valenzuela hit solo shots for the Blue Jays, who have lost all four games against the White Sox this season. Spencer Miles (4-2) was tagged for six runs on six hits in four-plus innings.
Orioles 3, Astros 2
Taylor Ward hit a two-run home run in the eighth inning to lift Baltimore to a road victory against Houston.
The Orioles extended their season-best winning streak to five games. They had barely mustered any offense until Adley Rutschman led off the eighth with a double and Ward followed with his seventh homer of the season. Baltimore collected five hits and four walks while striking out 13 times.
Astros starter Peter Lambert struck out 10 batters in six innings but his efforts weren’t enough. Lambert was charged with one run on three hits. Yordan Alvarez drove in a run and Jeremy Pena scored both runs for the Astros. Giants 7, Mariners 0
Willy Adames hit a grand slam and Landen Roupp pitched seven innings of two-hit ball as San Francisco returned from the All-Star break with a shutout victory against host Seattle.
Bryce Eldridge added a two-run shot for the Giants, who won their third game in a row to tie their season-long winning streak. Roupp (7-8) allowed only a two-out single to Josh Naylor in the fourth inning and a leadoff single to Luke Raley in the fifth.
Mariners starter Bryce Miller (4-4) gave up three runs (two earned) on seven hits over 5 2/3 innings. Twins 5, Cubs 2
Ryan Jeffers belted a go-ahead three-run home run in the third inning and Minnesota held on for a win over host Chicago.
Trevor Larnach and Ryan Kreidler also drove in one run apiece for the Twins, who have won three games in a row after entering the All-Star break with back-to-back victories. Twins right-hander Bailey Ober (7-3) allowed two runs on five hits in 5 1/3 innings.
Seiya Suzuki went 1-for-3 with a double and a run for Chicago. Michael Busch notched the lone RBI for the Cubs. Colin Rea (7-6) gave up four runs (three earned) on five hits in six innings. Brewers 2, Marlins 1 (10 innings)
Garrett Mitchell grounded an RBI single up the middle with two outs to score Jackson Chourio from second base, giving Milwaukee an extra-inning win over visiting Miami in the opener of the three-game series.
Joey Ortiz homered and singled for the Brewers, who had lost their last three games before the All-Star break. Logan Henderson was trying to win his fourth straight start, but did not earn a decision after allowing one run and three hits over five innings. Craig Yoho (1-0) recorded his first major league win with a scoreless 10th.
Griffin Conine homered and Otto Lopez had two hits for the Marlins, who had also lost their last three games before the break. Sandy Alcantara limited the Brewers to one run and three hits in six innings, and Lake Bachar (1-1) took the loss. Reds 7, Rockies 2
Spencer Steer hit a two-run homer and an inside-the-park solo home run, Brady Singer tossed seven strong innings and Cincinnati opened a three-game series against Colorado with a win in Denver.
Elly De La Cruz went 4-for-5 with a solo homer and Eugenio Suarez homered in his third straight game for the Reds, who have won 17 of their last 20 against the Rockies, including seven straight at Coors Field. Singer (4-9) allowed two runs on four hits.
Willi Castro homered among his two hits for the National League-worst Rockies (39-60), who have lost five of their last six. Gabriel Hughes (1-0) yielded two runs on five hits over 5 1/3 innings before his replacement, Jimmy Herget, allowed homers to the first two batters he faced in Cincinnati’s three-run sixth. Cardinals 5, Diamondbacks 4
Ivan Herrera delivered the game-winning RBI on a ninth-inning sacrifice fly to lift St. Louis to a win against Arizona in Phoenix.
After their 2-0 first-inning lead was erased, JJ Wetherholt put the Cardinals ahead 3-2 in the fifth inning on a solo homer. Masyn Winn added an eighth-inning sac fly to make it 4-2 St. Louis. Cardinals starting pitcher Michael McGreevy allowed two runs on six hits in 6 1/3 innings.
The Diamondbacks tied the game on a two-run homer off the right field foul pole from Corbin Carroll in the bottom of the eighth. Arizona starter Merrill Kelly gave up three runs (one earned) on four hits in five innings for the Diamondbacks, who had their four-game winning streak snapped. Tim Tawa also homered for Arizona. Tigers 2, Angels 1
Hao-Yu Lee lined a two-run double into the gap in right-center with two outs in the top of the ninth as Detroit rallied for a victory over Los Angeles in Anaheim, Calif.
Matt Vierling had two hits and a stolen base and Riley Greene and Ben Malgeri each doubled for the Tigers, who snapped a two-game losing streak and won for the 10th time in the last 13 games.
Zach Neto had two hits and scored a run and Mike Trout had a double for the Angels, who lost their third straight game and fell to 2-11 in the last 13 games. Reid Detmers was denied his first win since June 16 at Arizona after allowing four hits over six shutout innings. –Field Level Media

NEW DELHI: Weightlifting star Mirabai Chanu and boxing ace Lovlina Borgohain will lead the 124-member Indian contingent at the Commonwealth Games opening ceremony on July 23.Olympic medallists Mirabai Chanu and Lovlina Borgohain will carry India’s hopes and the Tricolour at the opening ceremony of the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow after the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) named the decorated duo as the country’s flag and baton bearers on Saturday.The opening ceremony of the scaled-down edition of the Commonwealth Games will take place at the OVO Hydro on July 23, where the two accomplished athletes will lead India’s 124-member contingent into the arena.Announcing the decision, IOA president PT Usha said the honour reflected the outstanding contributions both athletes have made to Indian sport.“It is a matter of pride Mirabai and Lovlina will be doing the honours at the OVO Hydro. I wish both the girls and the entire contingent good luck,” Usha said in a statement. “It is a matter of pride two women have been chosen to do the honours for Team India at the opening ceremony, which will set the tone and tenor for the Games.”
Two of India’s biggest medal hopes
Mirabai and Lovlina head to Glasgow not only as India’s ceremonial leaders but also among its strongest medal contenders.Mirabai, who won Olympic silver in the women’s 49kg category at the Tokyo Games in 2021, has been the face of Indian weightlifting for nearly a decade. She added Commonwealth Games gold in Birmingham in 2022 and is also a multiple medallist at the World Championships.Although she narrowly missed out on a medal at the Paris Olympics in 2024, the Manipur lifter remains one of India’s brightest prospects in Glasgow.Lovlina, meanwhile, scripted history by winning bronze at the Tokyo Olympics before becoming world champion in 2023. She also claimed silver at the 2023 Asian Games in Hangzhou and enters the Commonwealth Games as one of India’s leading boxing medal hopes.Usha praised both athletes for consistently delivering on the biggest stages.“Both Mirabai and Lovlina have time and again proved themselves in the international arena for India. They are at present training in right earnest for the Games in the United Kingdom,” she said.
India sends 124-member contingent
Earlier this week, the IOA officially flagged off the Indian contingent while unveiling the ceremonial and competition kits for the Games.India will be represented by 124 athletes, including both able-bodied and para-athletes, across 10 disciplines, including athletics, boxing, weightlifting, cycling, gymnastics, judo, lawn bowls and swimming, along with several para-sport events.The contingent will be led by Chef de Mission Rohit Rajpal and Deputy Chef de Mission Ravi Bengani as India looks to continue its rich Commonwealth Games legacy.
When the Seahawks‘ rookies reported to training camp on Friday, the highest-profile player in the group was first-round running back Jadarian Price, who projects to have a very big role as a rookie.
Price will obviously get a lot of carries after last year’s leading rusher, Kenneth Walker, left Seattle in free agency, and last year’s second-leading rusher, Zach Charbonnet, suffered a torn ACL in the divisional round of the playoffs. But Seahawks head coach Mike Macdonald said Price will contribute more than just running the ball.

“We’re going to run wide zone and he’s going to run wide zone,” Macdonald said, via Seahawks.com. “We’re going to run some gap scheme. He’s going to run some of that too and then the pass game he can come alive, too. I think that’s part of our offense in general, that we can take another step in including our halfbacks in the pass game. Then, he’s a great special teams player as well. The kick return stuff, we’ll see how it shakes out in other phases, but he’s going to come in and compete with the rest of the guys.”
NFL teams rarely make their starting running back a kick returner, but Price was a big-play kickoff returner at Notre Dame, returning 22 kickoffs for 794 yards (an average of 36.1 yards per return) and three touchdowns. The Seahawks believe Price will make a lot of plays with the ball in his hands, and they want to give him every opportunity to have the ball in his hands.

Los Angeles Dodgers star Mookie Betts just wants to be a baseball player, not a political figure or a political vehicle for people to push their agendas.
Betts, 33, visited the White House after the Dodgers won the World Series in 2024, but will not be going this year. The four-time World Series champion said he just had a baby and wanted to spend time with his family, and insisted the decision was not politically motivated.
The American League MVP winner questioned why athletes are viewed as political figures in today’s day and age.

“I don’t know why the world sees athletes as these political figures or these people that can make change or these people that can do this, that, and the other. We go out and play our sport,” Betts told Fox News Digital in a recent interview.
“I’m sure there are some guys in there that that love politics and want to be in it, but I’m not sure why the world sees us that way. But it kind of is what it is.”
The eight-time All-Star said athletes are in a tough position when it comes to visiting the White House because someone is guaranteed to be upset with the decision.
“Athletes, we’re in positions where, you know, especially myself, where I’m kind of damned if I do or damned if I don’t,” Betts told Fox News Digital in an interview on behalf of LGND, his glove company.

Knowing that backlash will come regardless of his decision, Betts decided to do what was best for him and his family.
“So instead of trying to make other people happy, it’s let me just make myself happy, you know, make myself happy and get to spend some time with my family. Like I said, I got a new baby, so get to spend some time with her,” Betts continued.
“I don’t really worry about it too much. Like I said, my stance is really that if I’m going to make everybody mad, make somebody mad, then at least I’m gonna make myself happy. So, that’s where I’m at.”

Betts is in the 13th season of his illustrious career but has struggled this year compared with previous seasons. The Nashville native is a career .288 hitter with 302 home runs and 944 RBIs, but is hitting just .235 with 11 home runs and 31 RBIs this season.

The White Sox took the opener 12-4 Friday night as play resumed after the All-Star break and have won all four games between the teams this season. The White Sox swept the Blue Jays in a three-game set at Chicago from April 3-5.
With poor air quality due to wildfire smoke, the roof at Rogers Centre was closed on Friday.
The teams are going in different directions. The Blue Jays have lost three straight games, are seven games under .500, and are last in the American League East.
The White Sox have won four games in a row, are six games above .500, and sit atop the AL Central.
“We joke about being just dumb enough to not know, and just being dumb enough to just go play hard, and let it take care of itself,” White Sox outfielder Randal Grichuk, a former Blue Jay, told the Chicago Sun-Times. “This room is really talented, and I think it’s honestly more talented than the baseball world knows and would give us credit for, because we are so young and the teams out there, people out there, just don’t really know.
“It’s been fun to be a part of it, helping them grow if I can.”
The Blue Jays have yet to look like the team of last year, when they won the AL East and took the Los Angeles Dodgers to Game 7 in the World Series.
“We’ve just got to get the big hit,” Toronto manager John Schneider said. “You’ve got to get the big hit or hit homers with guys on. That’s been the ‘thing’ all year.”
The Blue Jays are scheduled to start right-hander Shane Bieber (0-1, 7.64 ERA) on Saturday. He is 8-5 with a 2.93 ERA in 18 career starts against the White Sox but has not faced them since 2023.
Right-hander Davis Martin (9-4, 3.41 ERA) will start for Chicago. He is 1-0 with a 4.26 ERA in two career games (one start) against Toronto. The win came April 5, when he pitched six scoreless innings.
The Blue Jays had a slightly different look on Friday. George Springer played left field after making all of his previous starts this season as the designated hitter. It allowed the Blue Jays to use both catchers — Brandon Valenzuela and Alejandro Kirk — in the lineup against left-handed starter Anthony Kay. Springer had a solo home run and two RBIs, and Valenzuela homered as the DH. Luis Urias also homered.
“This won’t be every day,” Schneider said. “(Springer) is at the point where he’s comfortable at DH, and he’s not that young (36), so we don’t want to run him out there and kill him. But to use our whole roster a bit differently, we can put him out there a couple of times every couple of weeks and rotate the DH spot.”
The White Sox on Friday got a two-run homer from Sam Antonacci, four RBIs from Braden Montgomery — whose first career triple came with the bases loaded — and a three-run double by Colson Montgomery.
Tyler Schweitzer pitched the final three scoreless innings and was awarded his first career major league win. The White Sox had 12 hits, with each starter contributing at least one.
“That just kind of stokes the flames,” Braden Montgomery said. “We’ve always got this fire in us, but add a little bit of oxygen to the fire every now and again, where we get more excited to keep going, keep the foot on the pedal.”

The truth is United will probably pick two teams in Helsinki, with both getting 45 minutes, but who plays with who and what we can read into that will be interesting. It also makes sense to try and keep a mix of youth and experience.
Given Vitek is going to leave there doesn’t seem much point in starting him, so I would go with Heaton in goal. Kamason and Amass can start at full-backs alongside a more experienced central defence of Maguire and Yoro.
It would be good to see Santos from the start alongside one of the youngsters. I’d opt for Tyler Fletcher given he appears to be the most advanced of them.
In attack, Dorgu can start on the left and Mbeumo on the right, allowing Chido Obi to play through the middle.

The headline for today’s game will be Santos’ involvement after his transfer from Chelsea. It will be fascinating to get a glimpse of him in action, and he should be supported by Collyer and Mount in midfield.
I’d give Kamason a chance to show what we can do at right-back. He enjoyed a brilliant 2024/25, but his momentum was halted by an injury last term and hopefully he can return to the levels he showed previously.
Lacey is a really exciting prospect, and coaches believe he can contribute to the senior squad this season. Wheatley may have been forgotten about by some, but he has all the ingredients to be a top striker and should be given a start down the middle.

Steer has proved to be versatile for the Reds, who will continue their three-game series against the Colorado Rockies on Saturday afternoon in Denver.
Steer sparked the Reds to a 7-2 win on Friday with a two-run homer and an inside-the-park solo home run.
Elly De La Cruz went 4-for-5 with a solo homer, and Eugenio Suarez homered in his third straight contest for Cincinnati, which has won 17 of its last 20 games against Colorado since June 19, 2023, including seven straight wins at Coors Field.

“We feel like we’re a winning baseball club,” Rockies manager Warren Schaeffer said. “We’ve come up short more than we wanted to, and we want to come out on top more going forward.”
Steer has played six different positions for the Reds this season. He has been equally valuable at the plate, batting .250 with 16 homers and 40 RBIs.
“I think he’s just a really good baseball player,” Reds manager Terry Francona said. “He’s not the fastest guy on our team, but he gets himself in position. He got that (inside-the-park homer on Friday) coming out of the box.”
Steer is one of several Cincinnati players who could be on the move ahead of the trade deadline on Aug. 3, but he said it’s not something he worries about.
“I’m going to show up and play my butt off every day, wherever that is in the field and for whatever team it is,” Steer said. “It’s so out of my control that I’ve got to focus on where my feet are.”
The pitching matchup for Saturday’s game will feature a pair of right-handers in Colorado’s Tomoyuki Sugano (8-4, 4.80 ERA) and Cincinnati’s Rhett Lowder (3-6, 4.91).
Sugano, 36, is expected to be activated from the injured list (back spasms) to make his first start since June 26, when he allowed seven runs over five innings in a no-decision against the Minnesota Twins. Colorado lost 9-8 in 10 innings. Sugano will make his second career start vs. Cincinnati. He threw 5 1/3 scoreless innings in a 13-2 road win on April 29.
Cincinnati will counter with Lowder, who is returning to the rotation and taking the place of Nick Lodolo, who is on the 15-day injured list with a blister on his left index finger.
Lowder, 24, will pitch for the first time since tossing two scoreless innings in relief in his team’s 8-4 loss to the Chicago Cubs last Sunday. He is set to make his first start since June 30, when he allowed six runs over 4 2/3 innings in a 7-2 road defeat to the Milwaukee Brewers.
Lowder will face Colorado for the first time in his career. The Rockies are looking to bounce back after being outhit 11-6 on Friday. Schaeffer is exercising patience with shortstop Ezequiel Tovar, who went 0-for-3 and is batting .198 with eight home runs and 32 RBIs this season.

Sterling Alexiou’s main reservation about General Salute’s upcoming attempt to secure the Sydney season’s final black-type prize, following his recent Winter Stakes success, has been negated by an overnight rain deluge.
The gelding’s four career triumphs have all occurred on rain-affected going. With Rosehill initially assessed as a soft 5 earlier in the week, Alexiou had harboured concerns that the surface might not be compliant enough for General Salute’s preferences.
However, subsequent to a significant drenching on Thursday night, the track was categorised as a heavy 9 on Friday, thereby alleviating Alexiou’s anxieties.
“Possibly back to drier ground on Saturday would have been the only negative I could see,” Alexiou commented. “A lot of his best form is on soft tracks.”
General Salute’s victory in the Winter Stakes (1400m) marked the end of a 15-month winless period, during which he had secured placings in six of his seven starts, including a second-place finish to Autumn Glow in the preceding year’s Theo Marks Stakes (1300m).
Indeed, General Salute has managed to achieve a top-three finish in 12 of his 18 professional appearances. Should he manage another win in Saturday’s Listed Winter Challenge (1500m), his prize money accumulation will edge closer to the $1 million mark.
“It was good to see him bounce back, and bounce back into the winner’s stall,” Alexiou said. “He’s held his own in terms of what he’s shown us at home since that win. It’s a nice start from the 1500 so it should give Nash (Rawiller) options from a middle-draw in a big field.
“If he can get a good spot, he’ll run his usual honest race and be a good winning chance.”
A strong performance would not only serve as the ideal conclusion to General Salute’s rewarding winter campaign but would also position him for consideration towards a Group 1 target.
Having demonstrated capability up to 1400m, he finished second to Transatlantic in his sole other outing beyond that trip. If he can maintain his strength over 1500m on Saturday, a campaign towards the Epsom Handicap (1600m) will be evaluated.
“The idea of running him at 1500 is to give us a platform to see if he’s going to run a strong mile,” Alexiou explained. “If we think he might, he could be a lightweight Epsom chance.”
