Monaco rally to edge winless PSG and reclaim top spot – Sports

Published

on

Monaco made it three wins on the trot and reclaimed the top spot by beating Paris Saint-Germain, who were playing their first home match of the season. Luis Enrique’s men have now gone four matches without a win.

In Friday’s Premier League fixture, Bradley Barcola made his Liverpool debut in a 2-0 win over Ipswich. His international teammate Kylian Mbappé saw a stoppage-time penalty effort saved as Real Madrid dropped all three points away to Real Betis.

Elsewhere in Andalusia, Stage 13 of the Vuelta a Espana saw Wout van Aert outsprint France‘s Valentin Paret-Peintre to the finish line in Loja. The Belgian is now clear in the green jersey points standings, while Enric Mas remains in the overall lead with eight stages to go.

France began their Women’s Basketball World Cup campaign with a thumping win over Hungary, while the USA started their title defence by fending off China.

AP source: LSU leaves former pros Wright, Harris off opening-day roster

Published

on

LSU did not place one-time pros Dae’Quan Wright and Zxavian Harris on its roster in advance of its season opener, a person familiar with the situation told The Associated Press on Friday night.

The move appears to avoid an immediate confrontation with the Southeastern Conference, which had passed a rule forbidding former pros on rosters only to see that rule put on hold by a court in Louisiana.

It means LSU will open its season against Clemson on Saturday night without Wright and Harris — each of whom spent time in NFL training camps this summer — according to the person who spoke to AP. The person did not want to be identified because the school had not released the details publicly.

Both players have said they are enrolled at LSU, which means they could be eligible to be added to the roster later. Legal action is ongoing, with the SEC planning an appeal of the Louisiana ruling and also awaiting word on a federal lawsuit it filed Thursday asking the court to force LSU into following its rules banning pro athletes.

The roster decision marked the latest move in a bizarre, wide-ranging disagreement over something most people used to agree on: that players who had moved on to pro sports from college could not return to college.

Under the rules the SEC passed last week that were subsequently shut down by the Louisiana court, the league could suspend coach Lane Kiffin, fine LSU half its football budget and more if it puts Wright and Harris on the roster.

The case stems from a new NCAA rule that granted five seasons of eligibility for players who started college in 2023. Wright, Harris and dozens of others across the country who started in 2022 have filed lawsuits saying they also deserve a fifth year of eligibility.

Embedded within that argument is whether players among that class who tried out for NFL, NBA or WNBA teams should be able to come back to college and play.

“The SEC’s presidents and chancellors unanimously adopted a clear and reasonable standard: Member universities should not place former professional athletes on their rosters,” the conference said in a statement after Thursday night’s loss in Louisiana court.

In its own statement Friday, LSU said it was reviewing the court’s order and would “continue to work constructively with the SEC and NCAA as this matter moves forward.”

Also chiming in was the College Football Playoff, which came out in support of the rules barring former pros from the college gridiron. It wasn’t a surprising stance, considering virtually all of CFP management is made up of the same school leaders who adopted the rules.

Meanwhile, the LSU decision came hours after Clemson general counsel Chip Hood sent a letter to his LSU counterpart suggesting the eligibility issue is in conflict with the contract between the teams to play. Clemson still plans to show up, though its coach, Dabo Swinney, left little doubt over his feelings earlier in the week.

“I would just say it’s kind of embarrassing,” he said. “I mean, honestly, it’s just embarrassing that that’s where we are. I don’t blame the kids and people trying to take advantage of the system. I just think it’s embarrassing where we are with college football.”

Steve Clarke needed to give SFA ‘a little shove’ for new contract

Published

on

Clark added: “Obviously we got to March and I hadn’t been offered a new contract, which I thought was pretty strange. You start to think are they hedging their bets a little bit, waiting on the tournament in the summer.

“So I did a little bit in the media in March to give the SFA a little shove. We negotiated non-stop from the beginning of April really to the middle of May, just before the Curacao game.

“And I said to them if we don’t agree a new contract before we go to the World Cup then I will say I am leaving the job. They panicked a little bit and gave me the new contract.

“It was like drawing teeth trying to get it over the line. But we got it over the line anyway.

“But I always knew in my head that if we did not get out of the group stage then I would probably leave. The only way I would have stayed on is if they had been three fantastic games and they went against you.”

Scotland beat Haiti 1-0 but lost by the same score to Morocco before a 3-0 loss to Brazil left them waiting for an unlikely series of results to allow them to progress as one of the better third-place sides.

“We had to stay for four or five days [in Charlotte], the longest four or five days ever just sitting and waiting, knowing you are going home because the goal difference was not good enough,” he recalled.

“I knew we needed four points. I got hammered in the media for saying that. Somebody hammered me for saying, ‘nah, that’s us, we are going home’. But I was right.”

Clarke revealed he spoke to several senior players following the Brazil game and sensed that they needed to hear a different voice if they are to make history by reaching the knockout stage at Euro 2028.

Meantime, he spoke to new head coach Sebastien Pocognoli last week to wish him well and believes “even Scotland” cannot fail to qualify given two spots in the finals will be reserved for the best-ranked host who have not qualified as a group winner or runner-up.

Italian Grand Prix: Is ‘disruptor’ Kimi Antonelli winning hearts where Ferrari is Formula 1?

Published

on

When a Ferrari driver triumphs in F1, the team’s spiritual home of Maranello rejoices.

“It’s like the second coming effectively; everyone’s in the streets singing, dancing, church bells are ringing. It’s a party in the streets,” says Adrian Hussain, who is a member of the Scuderia Ferrari Club Silverstone and half-Italian.

Those famous bells last rung out in honour of a Ferrari world champion in 2007, when Finn Kimi Raikkonen won his only title by a single point.

Italy has not produced a world champion driver since Alberto Ascari claimed back-to-back titles for Ferrari in 1952 and 1953. For most Italians, seeing a title winner draped in il Tricolore – for any team on the grid – has been a dream rather than a reality.

But Antonelli’s ascendancy this year has opened the door for Italy to embrace a new hero – even if he does drive for the direct competition.

“Antonelli is disrupting the traditional rules of fandom in Italy,” Giulia Toninelli, a journalist for La Gazzetta dello Sport, Italy’s most widely read sports newspaper, tells BBC Sport.

Toninelli says Antonelli’s “strong personality” has won over the Italian public, especially the younger fanbase. “And the fact that he is racing for Mercedes matters very little to them.”

In the fanzone at Monza, a household is divided. While Alessandro is decked out in Ferrari red, his girlfriend, Emma, is wearing the silver of Mercedes.

“Of course, I am a little bit of a Ferrarista because I’m Italian. But honestly, I love Kimi, I support him,” says Emma.

If Antonelli does win this year’s world title, with the season finale possibly being held at Imola, about 25 miles from where he grew up in Bologna, both Emma and Alessandro agree it would mean “Italy is back on top”.

Five-time MotoGP race winner Marco Melandri and 2012 GP2 series champion and F1 TV’s Davide Valsecchi present the Chiacchiere da Box, external (Paddock Chatter) podcast, where the two ex-racers discuss and analyse everything that’s happened during F1 and MotoGP weekends.

“I think Kimi is living the dream, even of the Italian fans,” says Italian Melandri. “But in Italy, a lot of people are very close to Ferrari, they are pushing for Ferrari. So sometimes they are fighting themselves to understand, to choose who is their favourite driver. But I think Kimi is doing something amazing.”

Compatriot Valsecchi feels the same: “We are loving it. It’s a big surprise for everyone, knowing that an Italian driver, so young, is leading the championship, is driving so well, and is mentally so strong. So, at the moment, everything is perfect for us.”

NCAA: Charles Tiu not ruling Allen Liwag out for Season 102

MANILA, Philippines—Much has been said about Allen Liwag’s status for the College of St. Benilde in the upcoming NCAA Season 102 men’s basketball tournament.

Active consultant Charles Tiu, though, assured the Blazers faithful that they will see the reigning two-time MVP in action for Benilde in Season 102. The only catch is that he’ll be unavailable early in their campaign.

READ: Charles Tiu doesn’t mind ‘tiring’ grind as he steers CSB

“[He] should miss a few games,” Tiu told the Inquirer in a text message on Saturday. “[But] he will play at some point.”

Tiu bared that the 6-foot-6 Liwag got hurt last month but refused to delve into the specifics of the injury, saying he was “not sure of the exact diagnosis.”

Liwag was named MVP for the second straight time last season, averaging 15.7 points, 9.0 rebounds, 2 assists and 1 block per game. He led CSB to a finals appearance in Season 100 but was swept by Mapua.

Liwag’s strong showing last season, however, was still not enough to propel the Blazers back into the title round after they were booted out by eventual champion San Beda in the semifinals.

Despite dealing with Liwag’s injury concerns, Benilde remains a Final Four contender with a deep roster that includes Justine Sanchez, Joshua Cajucom, Raffy Celis, Jhomel Ancheta and newcomer Dairick Duterte.

Here’s why AIFF has preponed India vs Panama football match in Bengaluru | Football News

Published

on

The Indian football team’s international friendly against Panama has been brought forward by a day and will now be played on September 25 at Bengaluru’s Sree Kanteerava Stadium, the All India Football Federation (AIFF) announced on Saturday.

The match was originally scheduled for September 26, as part of India’s three-match friendly series against South American teams, including Brazil and Uruguay. While AIFF has announced the revised date for the fixture, it is yet to announce the reason behind the change.

However, according to media reports, the rescheduling is linked to the Bengaluru Marathon, which is scheduled to be held at the Sree Kanteerava Stadium on September 27.

The stadium will serve as both the starting and finishing point of the marathon, creating a scheduling and logistical challenge if the India-Panama match were to be played on September 26.

Why has India vs Panama been moved?

The change is understood to be primarily a venue-management issue. The Sree Kanteerava Stadium has been allotted for the Bengaluru Marathon on September 27. With the stadium being used as the start and finish point, preparations for the event need to be completed ahead of race day.

Holding an international football match on September 26 would leave the organisers with very little time to prepare the stadium and its surrounding areas for the marathon. The football fixture would require its own match-day arrangements, including security, team and broadcast operations, spectator management and other venue infrastructure.

According to a report from news agency PTI, sources said it would be difficult to conduct the football match on September 26 and then prepare the venue for the marathon the following day.

“We are now going to advance the India-Panama match by a day. It will now be held on September 25,” a KSFA source told PTI.

India return to Bengaluru after three years

The Panama fixture will mark India’s return to Bengaluru after a three-year absence. The Indian men’s team last played at the Sree Kanteerava Stadium during the 2023 SAFF Championship. India won the tournament after defeating Kuwait in the final at the same venue.

The return to Bengaluru will also give the Blue Tigers an opportunity to face one of the stronger teams on their international schedule.

Panama are ranked 44th in the world and featured at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. AIFF had described the Central American side as a high-quality opponent when it originally confirmed Bengaluru as the venue. The match will be India’s first-ever meeting with Panama.

Part of a demanding international window

The Panama game is the first of three high-profile friendlies lined up for India during the September-October international period.

India will then travel to Kolkata to face five-time world champions Brazil on October 3 and two-time world champions Uruguay on October 6. Both matches will be played at the Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan.

India’s preparatory camp for the three fixtures is scheduled to begin in Bengaluru on September 14. The squad is expected to travel to Kolkata on September 28 following the Panama match.

The revised date means India will now have three days between the Panama match and their scheduled travel to Kolkata.

Brazil and Uruguay matches to go on as scheduled

The change affects only the India-Panama fixture. India’s matches against Brazil and Uruguay remain scheduled for October 3 and October 6 respectively in Kolkata.

Brazil will provide India’s biggest test of the window, with the five-time world champions followed by Uruguay, two-time World Cup winners.

The three fixtures give head coach Khalid Jamil’s side an opportunity to face Panama, Brazil and Uruguay — all of whom featured at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. AIFF has described the window as an important opportunity for the Indian team to gain exposure against high-level opposition.

Team Vitality certainly aren’t going down without a fight in Portugal.

Facing elimination for the fourth straight match, Vitality again survived at the BLAST Open Fall 2026 in Porto. But what they did Friday was a whole new level of survival.

Facing FURIA in the playoff quarterfinals, Vitality dropped the first map but won the next two to take the match. In the other quarterfinal, Team Falcons had more drama-free experience, sweeping G2 Esports 2-0.

In the semifinals on Saturday, Group A winner Team Spirit will oppose Team Falcons, and Group B winner MOUZ will take their turn at trying to send Vitality home.

The $1.1 million Counter-Strike 2 event began with 16 teams divided into two groups for the double-elimination opening stage. The group winners advanced to the playoff semifinals, the group runners-up moved on to the quarterfinals as high seeds and the two third-place teams headed to the playoff quarterfinals as low seeds. Nikkita Lyons Sends A One-Word Message To Royce Keys After Revealing The Name Of His WWE Faction

Published

Nikkita Lyons sent a one-word message to Royce Keys, and he and OTM revealed their faction’s name. The group is called “946,” and they issued a stern warning via social media.

Keys and OTM debuted on the August 24, 2026 edition of Monday Night RAW. They attacked The Usos, Solo Sikoa, and LA Knight on their first night together on the main roster. The trio crashed the main event tag team match featuring Jimmy and Jey against Sikoa and Knight.

On Instagram, Lyons reacted with a one-word message to Keys and OTM’s newly released promo. Keys, who narrated the promo, stated that nobody was safe amid their issues with The Bloodline, Solo Sikoa, and Knight.

Sam Roberts Suggested That Royce Keys and OTM Are A Mix Of The Shield And Nexus

Sam Roberts had an interesting take on the trio of Royce Keys and OTM. The analyst stated that the trio reminded him of The Shield and Nexus, considering the amount of chaos they caused on Monday Night RAW.

Speaking on RAW Recap, Roberts had the following to say:

“Out of nowhere, Royce Keys and Out the Mud invade Monday Night Raw to end the show. It was almost like the Shield meets the Nexus in terms of just like utter chaos and the fact that they weren’t necessarily on anybody’s side… Nobody saw it coming… Nowadays, everybody wanna talk like they got something to say, but nothing comes out when they move their lips, just a bunch of gibberish, and what is that? ‘Cause they forgot about Royce Keys. Is what everybody has been saying.”

Keys and OTM once again made a statement on the latest edition of Monday Night RAW when they attacked The Usos in the parking lot before laying waste to Solo Sikoa backstage and leaving him in a bloody mess.

The faction’s issues with The Bloodline are far from over. Roman Reigns has ordered Jacob Fatu to deal with Keys and his group, while he deals with the LA Knight problem.
