No. 1 UCLA baseball’s 27-game win streak comes to an end

Published

on

The No. 1 UCLA baseball’s 27-game win streak came to an end as they were shutout against UC Santa Barbara at Jackie Robinson Stadium on Tuesday.

It was just the third loss of the season for the Bruins with the previous two coming against UC San Diego and San Diego State. UCLA’s batters were alive in their series sweep against Rutgers, but the Gauchos pitching staff proved much stingier with five hits allowed, while throwing two walks and nine strikeouts.

Missed opportunity

UCLA had the bases loaded in the bottom of the first, but was unable to get a runner to cross home plate. Despite the Bruins getting four runners on base, UCLA got only one hit. The rest of the base runners came from a pair of walks and a hit by pitch.

First score

In the top of the third, the Gauchos dialed in on freshman right-handed pitcher Angel Cervantes’ throws to get three hits and score two runs for the first runs of the game.

No chance

UCLA’s regained their footing in the next two innings by allowing one hit and no runs to give their batters a chance. However, the Bruins remained stifled at bat with no hits or base runners in the fourth or fifth to keep UC Santa Barbara with a two-run lead.

Holding out hope

In the bottom of the sixth, UCLA had their second hit of the game and first base runner since the third. However, it led to no runs. With the bases loaded in the top of the seventh, the Bruins were able to clean things up though and junior right-handed pitcher Cal Randall struck out the final two batters swinging. The offense wasn’t able to repay the favor though with another scoreless inning in the bottom of the seventh, despite the bases being loaded.

That’s a wrap

UC Santa Barbara added two more runs in the top of the eighth with three hits leading to another two-run inning. UCLA had a hit of their own in the bottom of the eighth, but couldn’t conjure up more offensive to get their runner home. The Bruins would end the game being shutout after another scoreless inning in the ninth for their first loss since Feb. 24.

The Bruins will have an opportunity to get back on track and keep the conference record clean on Friday against Minnesota at Jackie Robinson Stadium with an anticipated start time of 2 p.m. PT.

Kiké Hernández starts rehab with Triple-A Oklahoma City

Published

on

Triple-A Oklahoma City has been a busy place for Dodgers on the mend for the past few weeks, with rehab assignments piling up over the last few days. Utility man Kiké Hernández is the latest to work his way back with the Comets, starting a rehab assignment on Tuesday night.

Hernández on Tuesday started at third base and batted second against the Salt Lake Bees, an Angels affiliate.

Hernández is coming off left elbow surgery in November, and also missed 40 games last July and August with left elbow inflammation. Oklahoma City Comets play-by-play announcer Alex Freedman during the broadcast in the first inning on Tuesday said Hernández mentioned earlier during batting practice that this was the first time he’s felt fully healthy in about a year.

This is going to be a lengthy rehab for Hernández, who has been on the 60-day injured list since February, and his earliest possible return to the Dodgers is May 24.

Hernández is the fourth Dodger to play for Oklahoma City since Saturday. Blake Snell pitched four innings in Round Rock on Sunday, and is expected to make one more rehab start this coming Saturday at a location to be determined. Brock Stewart rehabbed for three weeks with Ontario and Oklahoma City, and is back with the Dodgers in Houston, though he has not yet been activated off the injured list. Brusdar Graterol pitched in his first game in 549 days on Saturday, and is expected to be on a long rehab assignment as he returns from November 2024 shoulder surgery.

Other Dodgers on the mend

Tommy Edman is coming off right ankle surgery in November, and though he’s not (yet) on the 60-day injured list, he’s behind Hernández on the rehab calendar. Dodgers manager Dave Roberts told reporters Monday in Houston that Edman felt some soreness in his ankle, so they’ve slowed down his rehab program, which has been on the cautious said since the offseason.

Mookie Betts could be on a rehab assignment soon, as he works his way back from an oblique strain.

“Mookie is working on his bat speed. He feels good. I would say he’s going to get out on a rehab soon. Whether it’s this week — he’s supposed to a simulated game, like a live BP on Thursday,” Roberts said Monday, as shown on SportsNet LA. “If he does his live BP on Thursday and comes out okay, then you can sort of figure out where he goes next.”

Betts was injured on March 4 in Washington D.C., and last week on the homestand said doctors initially told him he’d miss six weeks. This Saturday is the five-week mark for Betts, who said he was ahead of schedule but also cautioned that the nature of oblique injuries requires patience.

“It’s just time. There’s no magic formula to this. You can do as much rehab as you want. Obliques just take time, it’s always four to six weeks, no matter however you want to twist it,” Betts said on April 29 at Dodger Stadium. “We’re kind of approaching the four-week mark. Once I get to that point is when we’ll really turn the corner. We’re close, and after that it’s going to get a lot better.”

Axar Patel, Delhi Capitals Shown No Mercy After Another Collapse: ‘Serious Cricket Team?’

Published

on

Former India cricketer Dodda Ganesh has lashed out Delhi Capitals over their ‘shocking’ team selection in their IPL 2026 clash against Chennai Super Kings on Friday. After captain Axar Patel opted to bat, DC suffered a batting collapse at the Arun Jaitley Stadium. The hosts were reduced to 69/5 at the end of the 11th over before Sameer Rizvi (40 not out) and Tristan Stubbs (38) added a crucial 65 runs take DC to a respectable total of 155/7.

Taking to X, Ganesh slammed Axar and the DC management for their selection calls, questioning the decision to bench impact players like Prithvi Shaw, Abishek Porel, and David Miller. Ganesh wondered aloud whether DC is operating like a “serious franchise,” given the tactical blunders seen so far.

“There’s so much Indian batting talent available in Delhi’s camp. They can so easily open with Shaw/Rana/Porel along with KL, & have Miller in the middle order. Instead, the geniuses play Nissanka at the top & drop Miller. Tell me, how can this be a serious cricket team?” Ganesh wrote on X.

DC’s free fall began with the loss of opener Pathum Nissanka who failed to clear the mid-on fielder off a slower ball from left-arm pacer Mukesh Choudhary.

Both Nissanka (19 off 15) and K L Rahul (12 off 13) began with crisp boundaries but did not last long. After Nissanka, Rahul attempted an inside-out hit off left-arm spinner Akeal Hosein but could not get to the pitch of the ball on the charge to be caught by opposition captain Ruturaj Gaikwad.

DC laboured to 37 for two in the powerplay with Hosein bowling half of the overs including one from the other end that produced the wicket of Rahul.

Axar had the ideal opportunity to make an impact with the bat but fell to a soft dismissal, offering a sitter to the cover fielder off a Gurjapneet Singh ball that appeared to stop on him. DC were now reeling at 69 for five in 11 overs.

Tristan Stubbs (38 off 31) and impact player Sameer Rizvi (40 not out off 24) hit a flurry of sixes to take the innings forward in their 65-run stand but the damage done in the first half of the game could not be reversed as DC ended with an underwhelming total.
