Mirra Andreeva is a Grand Slam champion for the first time after defeating Maja Chwalinska 6-3, 6-2 in the Roland Garros final.

At just 19 years old, Andreeva becomes the youngest woman to win the French Open since Monica Seles in 1992.

The victory also sees Andreeva claim the sixth title of her career and move to No. 1 in the Race to the WTA Finals with a tour-leading 36 wins in 2026.

Despite the achievement, Andreeva was quick to recognize the run produced by Chwalinska, who came through qualifying and reached the first Grand Slam final of her career.

“Of course first of all congrats to Maja for these amazing three weeks. Passing through qualies, winning so many matches, beating so many great players, congrats to your team as well. You guys have done an amazing job.”

“You’re a very tricky opponent. I wouldn’t want to play against you one more time,” she joked. “I wish you the best of luck for the rest of the season.”

Andreeva also thanked her team for helping her reach the biggest moment of her career.

“Thanks to my team. I can be a tough cookie sometimes. It’s pretty hard to put up with me certain days.”

“Thank you very much for pushing me to my limits. Thank you for making me work even when I don’t want to work. You always push me.”

The teenager reserved a special message for her parents, who have supported her throughout her journey in tennis.

“I will say a special thanks to my parents for always supporting me and always believing in me. My dad is currently watching on TV. Thanks so much for always being there for me and supporting me no matter what.”

“Last but not least I also wanna thank myself for believing in myself. Always giving my 100% even when it’s tough. Trying every day to be better as a person and as a player.”

“Believing I can do this. Fighting so many demons inside of me. Only I know how tough it was for me. How nervous I was these last few weeks.”

“Also thanks to myself for working so hard and giving my best.”

At 19 years old, she is already a Grand Slam champion. Based on what she has shown this season, there may be many more major titles to come.

The NYPD reversed its ban on New York Knicks watch parties for the NBA Finals, but after Game 2, it may be regretting that decision.

Fans got so rowdy during the Knicks’ Eastern Conference Finals run that the NYPD put a stop to watch parties outside Madison Square Garden. But when the Knicks clinched their first NBA Finals appearance since 1999, the department said the party was back on.

The Knicks will come home with a 2-0 series lead on Monday, but Game 2’s victory, the biggest for the Knicks in a generation, brought about unruly behavior outside the Garden.

After the Knicks’ 105-104 victory over the San Antonio Spurs, ABC7 reported that 17 people were arrested, including one on charges of allegedly striking a police officer and injuring him.

Police said fans became “increasingly disorderly” as the game went on, the outlet reported.

The officer who was injured was the victim of punches by a fan who entered and then refused to leave a restricted area.

One person accused of selling counterfeit merchandise was also charged with possessing a loaded firearm.

The department said fans stopped traffic on Seventh and Eighth avenues between 31st and 35th streets and climbed on light poles, subway entrances and food vendor carts.

Madison Square Garden also hosted watch parties inside the arena for each of the first two Finals games.

The Spurs fought back from a 14-point deficit to take the lead in the final minute of the fourth quarter, but with the game tied at 104, Victor Wembanyama threw a pass off an unaware teammate’s back and Jalen Brunson stole the ball. Brunson was fouled and hit one of two free throws to take the lead. Wembanyama then took a potential game-winning shot but missed the mark.

Game 3 will be Monday night in New York, with President Donald Trump slated to attend.

Demi Vollering claimed victory on a shortened queen stage of the women’s Giro d’Italia on Saturday but admitted it was the “weirdest finish line of my life”.

A summit finish in Sestriere had been scheduled for the eighth and penultimate stage, but organisers reduced the route by 28 kilometres as an unstable slab of ice was threatening to fall on to the route.

Ice had already been cleared from an avalanche shortly before the riders passed through the Italian Alps.

Instead the line was hastily moved to one kilometre below the Colle delle Finestre, where Vollering, of FDJ United–Suez, prevailed in a four-way sprint finish.

The pre-race favourite edged out Isabella Holmgren, Antonia Niedermaier and fellow Dutch rider Anna van der Breggen to claim her second stage win of this year’s race.

“It was strange because the Finestre was suddenly the final climb,” said the 29-year-old Vollering. “It was the weirdest finish line of my life, but I’m very happy to take the win.”

Team SD Worx–Protime rider Van der Breggen retains the pink jersey for the final stage, over 145km around Saluzzo at the foot of the Alps, with Vollering having cut the four-time winner’s lead slightly to 49 seconds.

“We hoped that we could get closer to the maglia rosa today,” said Vollering. “Tomorrow’s stage is not as hard as today’s, but we will make a plan and think about how to try to win the Giro.”

Bill Haney has insisted that his son, Devin, would “absolutely” fight Shakur Stevenson, but only if their terms are adhered to at the negotiating table.

The two pound-for-pound stars have been linked with a move to Dana White’s Zuffa Boxing, perhaps with a view to collide under the promotional banner.

At this stage, Zuffa does not recognise the super-lightweight division, where Stevenson claimed his WBO title with a unanimous decision victory over Teofimo Lopez.

This particular triumph saw him become a four-division world champion in January but, if he signs with Zuffa, the 28-year-old may need to decide between campaigning at lightweight or welterweight.

Stevenson has previously insisted that he would only face a welterweight opponent on one of two conditions: either with a rehydration clause in the contract or at a catchweight of 144lbs.

It seems that neither option is likely to be entertained by Haney, however, as the WBO champion’s father has told Cigar Talk host Naji that he would not accept any such offers.

While ruling out any possibility of a weight stipulation, Bill Haney did say that his son would face Stevenson at his usual fighting weight of 147lbs.

Haney became a three-division world champion last November, dethroning Brian Norman Jr with a unanimous decision victory after scoring a second-round knockdown.

Since then, there have been talks of a unification match with WBA champion Rolando Romero, which was initially rumoured to take place on May 30.

With no official dates in the diary, though, the immediate future for both Haney and Stevenson remains somewhat nebulous.

Adrien Broner believes one man has an “easy” route to victory if Ryan Garcia and Conor Benn lock horns later this year.

While an official announcement is yet to emerge, the pair are set to collide in Las Vegas, with WBC champion Garcia revealing September 12 as a possible date.

The 27-year-old became a world welterweight champion in February, dethroning Mario Barrios with a unanimous decision victory after flooring his man in the opening round.

Since then, much of the talk has centred around mandatory challenger Benn, who has not fought at 147lbs since his second-round finish over Chris van Heerden in 2022.

‘The Destroyer’ was then supposed to face Chris Eubank Jr later that year, only to fail two doping tests for banned substance clomifene.

As a result, that middleweight rivalry was not revisited until 2025, with Benn losing a unanimous decision in April before exacting his revenge in November.

Most recently, the 29-year-old outpointed Regis Prograis at a catchweight of 150lbs, featuring on the undercard of Tyson Fury vs Arslanbek Makhmudov in April.

With Benn expected to challenge Garcia, though, former world champion Broner has told FightHype he suspects the Brit will be returned to the losing column.

“Ryan – easy. He’s got more talent. In that fight, the talent will show.”

Like Benn, Garcia has a controversial history with doping after testing positive for banned substance ostarine following his showdown with Devin Haney in 2024.

The American was subsequently handed a year-long ban, his majority decision victory overturned to a no-contest, before losing a unanimous decision to Rolando Romero in May 2025.

Benn has teased an announcement in the next two weeks, and if he is to get his mandatory shot at the belt, this US vs UK battle of stars could be one of the biggest of the year.
