TimesofIndia.com in London: Eight years ago, Rohit Sharma summed himself up with a line that now feels almost prophetic: “Throw me to the wolves and I come back leading the pack.” As retirement speculation engulfed him ahead of the Lord’s ODI, the 39-year-old responded exactly as that quote promised, rising above the chatter with an innings that dismissed every question about his future. On Sunday, Lord’s was painted in blue for the third ODI between India and England. There are plenty of traditions that define this iconic venue: the golden-and-red-striped ties, aka the egg-and-bacon tie; the five-minute bell, rung by Yuvraj Singh on this occasion; a walk through the Long Room with the Honours Board on display and the watchful presence of Father Time. Away from all this stood Rohit Sharma. He had been welcomed during the nets session a day prior with plenty of cheers, and it continued as the team arrived for the series decider.Over the last few days, the focus was squarely on the 39-year-old. The third and final ODI was billed as his last. Some reports claimed his parents were in attendance for this milestone. Retirement rumours were circulating. BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia needed to officially come out and deny that it was going to be Rohit’s last. Yet, it didn’t stop the rumour mill from working overtime. As for Rohit, he looked completely at ease in his own skin.“Look, my job is with the bat. Come and play, represent my country, represent the team. That’s what I’ve been told to do since my debut, and that’s what I’m going to do. The noise, since I made my debut, has been there. And till the time I’m going to stay here, it is always going to be there. So it doesn’t really matter too much. What matters is what I do on the field, try and contribute to the success of the team. That’s all my focus is right now. And let the noise be there. If there’s no noise, there’s no fun. My job is inside, their job is outside. That’s how I look at it,” he told BCCI.tv after the match. And on the field, Rohit did what he’s done before in this part of the world.Opening alongside Shubman Gill with a massive 388 runs to chase, Rohit did what he’s been doing effortlessly over the past two decades. He toyed with the bowlers while pacing his innings perfectly. A near-run-a-ball 50 became an 84-ball century as the accelerator was pressed after the 70-run mark. The right-hander switched gears swiftly to jump from 69 off 69 to 121 off 100, scoring 52 runs off 31 balls.

I think the way Rohit bhai paced his innings was outstanding

Shubman Gill

“I think the way Rohit bhai paced his innings was outstanding,” skipper Shubman Gill said later. “During the Powerplay, we spoke about whether we should go after the bowling or not, but we know it’s not easy to attack against the new ball. The way he paced his innings and then accelerated was exceptional. Once he got into the 60s and 70s, it was truly a treat to watch,” he added.Even as Rohit limped while completing singles, with the 30% humidity playing its part, he chose to tonk the bowlers rather than deal in singles and doubles with Virat Kohli at the other end. That 121 off 100 became 132 off 107 following twin boundaries in a Sam Curran over, including a cracking shot towards deep extra cover. Two balls later, Jacob Bethell could only look towards cow corner as Rohit sent the ball flying for a maximum, his fifth of the day. One could see the hapless expression on Bethell’s face. It wasn’t a bad ball. It was just bowled to an in-form Rohit, who has done this many a time before.

The England bowler did get his revenge a ball later as Rohit went for a sweep, missed, and the ball found his pads before crashing into the stumps for a lucky dismissal.Rohit took in the adulation and appreciation of the tens of thousands in attendance. His 34th ODI century. His eighth in England. And the first by an Indian at Lord’s. All added to his resume. His impressive and seemingly yet-to-be-finished resume. The other half of the famous RoKo, Virat Kohli, kept the chase alive. The chasemaster believed even as Rohit walked off after their 113-run stand, long after the duo, playing their 400th match together, had shared a massive hug following Rohit’s ton. India needed 128 from 68 balls. Was a miracle, a la NatWest 2002, possible?

We played our entire career together, so it was nice to have him in the middle. We’ve had a lot of partnerships. It’s always fun batting together. We understand each other so well.

Rohit Sharma

Kohli tried his utmost. A tossed-up Will Jacks delivery allowed the 37-year-old to dance down the track and send it sailing over the bowler’s head for a maximum. Still with a job to finish, Kohli barely lifted his bat in acknowledgement of his 46-ball fifty, his first at Lord’s. Two balls later, Kohli used his wrists to send the ball over deep backward square leg for yet another six.In between, Ishan Kishan and Shreyas Iyer came and went. Kohli stood in the middle, and a colleague chimed in, “lone warrior again.” The gladiator of the Indian team then went after Jacob Bethell, hitting him for a straight six.But the knock, and the chase, were effectively over after Sam Curran got rid of Kohli for 74 off 60 balls, laced with four fours and three sixes. Kohli, as always, was frustrated that he couldn’t get the job done and couldn’t steer the team past the finish line.

Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli create history in 3rd ODI against England at Lord's, become first Indian pair to...

With India losing the bilateral ODI series 1-2, having been thrashed 0-2 and 0-4 by Ireland and England, respectively, in the T20Is, there will be plenty for the BCCI hierarchy to assess. But for RoKo, who continue to bring thousands into stadiums and millions to their TV sets, the road is not over.“We played our entire career together, so it was nice to have him in the middle. We’ve had a lot of partnerships. It’s always fun batting together. We understand each other so well. It’s always nice in the middle, bouncing off ideas and trying to see what we can do. So there was a lot of conversation going on while we were batting,” Rohit said about Kohli and their time together in the middle at Lord’s.Unless something drastic happens, that time in the middle will continue for at least one more series. Kohli and Rohit had contrasting report cards from this series in their bid to be in South Africa for the 2027 ODI World Cup. While Kohli scored 144 runs from three matches, bouncing back after a blip at Edgbaston, Rohit raced away to 175 runs in the series following his century at Lord’s.As for Rohit’s retirement rumours and the end of his 19-year ODI career, the snooze button can be swiftly pressed. “He’s not told us anything. I think it’s all out in the media, but there’s not been any discussion like that in the team,” skipper Shubman Gill said in the post-match press conference.India’s next ODI assignment is in September against the West Indies, with more in store in New Zealand in November and against Sri Lanka in December.

Spain’s Lamine Yamal Has ‘Completed Football’ At 19 After Winning World Cup

Published

on

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

Lamine Yamal received glowing praise after helping Spain beat Argentina 1-0 after extra time in the World Cup final.

The 19-year-old produced another composed display on football’s biggest stage, with former England goalkeeper Joe Hart claiming the Barcelona winger had “completed football” after adding a World Cup winners’ medal to his European Championship triumph.

The Passing Of The Torch In New York

In a moment that will be etched into football history, Yamal embraced a tearful Lionel Messi at the conclusion of the World Cup final at the New York New Jersey Stadium.

The imagery was impossible to ignore; a passing of the torch from a 39-year-old icon to a 19-year-old phenom. Yamal, sporting the Barcelona number 10 shirt for his club, offered consolation to the man who arguably defined that very jersey.

The 1-0 victory for La Roja, secured by Ferran Torres in the 106th minute, ensured that Yamal became the youngest player ever to win both the European Championship and the World Cup. At just 19 years and six days old, he has achieved what many legends fail to accomplish in a lifetime.

Hart, De la Fuente Praise Teenage Star

Spain v Argentina: Final - FIFA World Cup 2026

Former England goalkeeper Joe Hart singled out Yamal’s composure after the teenager was repeatedly challenged by Argentina throughout the final.

The BBC Sport pundit said: “Not only did Lamine Yamal not react. He stood up to it. He was not rattled and he did not back down. He had the entire team trying to smash him. He just stayed real cool. It was real standout performance from him. Lamine Yamal is 19 years old. What a beautiful day for him. He’s 19 and has completed football.”

Spain head coach Luis de la Fuente also praised the youngster’s contribution after the victory.

“He has played great football that will help him to mature and be even a greater footballer than he already is. He really sacrificed for the collective good. This is very important in my squad. In my opinion he played a great World Cup.”

Spain’s Perfect Starter

Despite entering the competition with concerns over a hamstring injury, Yamal started seven of Spain’s eight games at the 2026 World Cup and won every single one of them.

That lingering issue appeared to hamper his usual attacking output, resulting in a somewhat underwhelming personal campaign with just one goal. Ultimately, his quieter tournament allowed teammate Pau Cubarsí to pip him to the FIFA Young Player award.

Yet, Yamal’s influence on the team’s historic success was absolute. Added to his six starts at Euro 2024, he has now won all 13 of his major tournament starts.

This flawless run is the longest perfect streak for any European starter in major tournament history. His ability to balance individual brilliance with defensive discipline and tactical awareness has made him the undisputed jewel in Spain’s crown as they return to the summit of world football.

Yamal Looks To Build On Historic Success

Spain v Argentina: Final - FIFA World Cup 2026

Yamal will now return to club football having reinforced his status as one of the game’s brightest young stars after adding a World Cup winners’ medal to his European Championship triumph.

At just 19, the Barcelona winger has already amassed a remarkable trophy haul. With De la Fuente continuing to place his faith in him, Yamal looks set to remain at the heart of Spain’s new era as the world champions aim to build on their latest success.

The cost of a Vita Vea extension with the Bucs just went up

Published

on

In the NFL, it is always advantageous to pay players early when they have shown what they are capable of. In the case of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, they have done a good job of retaining talent over the years under general manager Jason Licht.

When he hits on a draft pick, they tend to stick around. However, for once, it may have been slow to get one player extended, and the recent work of another team may now create a new complication in their attempts to extend Vita Vea.

On Monday, the Green Bay Packers extended defensive lineman Devonte Wyatt by giving him a three-year, $57 million contract extension with a $20 million signing bonus. That will bring his annual salary to an average of $19 million, which puts him just below the likes of Osa Odighizuwa, Kenny Clark, and Zach Seiler.

Fake images circulate of Spanish World Cup players draped in Palestinian flags

Published

on

An image of Spanish footballer Lamine Yamal grinning widely with the World Cup tucked under his arm and a Palestinian flag draped over his shoulders has garnered millions of views on social media. It turns out, however, that the image is a fake.

The image, first posted the night after Spain won the 2026 FIFA World Cup, has been picked up and shared by a wide variety of accounts. Just one X post featuring the image – a post by Palestinian journalist Mohamed Al Masri – had garnered more than 1.9 million views by late afternoon on July 20.

The photo has also circulated widely on Facebook

An image generated with the help of ChatGPT

However, this image of Yamal was created using ChatGPT, the artificial intelligence chatbot owned by the company OpenAI. SynthID, Google’s tool to identify AI-generated content, was able to detect that the image contains a hidden watermark showing that it was generated by “OpenAI’s tools”, i.e. ChatGPT.

SynthID was originally created to detect images generated using Nano Banana, Google’s AI image generator. Now, it can also detect images generated by ChatGPT. To check an image, you just upload it to OpenAI’s verification site.

The AI-generated image was made using a real photo of Lamine Yamal originally published by Spanish newspaper El País in their live feed covering the World Cup final. You can see that his smile is the same, as is his grasp on the World Cup trophy. His headband is the same, too.

Lamine Yamal’s real support for the Palestinian cause

While the image that has been circulating online was created using artificial intelligence, Lamine Yamal does actually support the Palestinian cause. His position on the matter has stirred some controversy.

On May 11, players from FC Barcelona – Yamal’s club – were riding on an open-top bus through the streets of the city as part of a parade celebrating their La Liga championship win against their rival, Real Madrid

As the bus moved through the overjoyed crowd, someone held up a Palestinian flag to Yamal. Yamal took it and then waved it over his head.

The video immediately stirred up controversy on social media, with some commending the player’s position, while others condemned him. Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz accused Yamal of “inciting hatred towards Israel and the Jewish people”.

For his part, the young football star posted an image on social media of himself holding the flag, a post that seems to indicate he stands by the gesture.

Pedro Porro: another Spanish player falsely accused of wearing a Palestinian flag

Several social media posts that garnered tens of thousands of views claimed that Spanish player Pedro Porro was also decked out in a Palestinian flag while celebrating the team’s World Cup win.

Images show Porro receiving his medal with a green, black and white flag tied around his waist. At first glance, it does look a bit like the Palestinian flag.

In reality, the player was wearing a flag from his home region: the autonomous community of Extremadura, located in western Spain. The player has shown his love for the region on multiple occasions and spoken about his regional identity.

It appears that instead of wearing a Palestinian flag, Pedro Porro was just showing some hometown pride.

Topps To Release Iconic Photo Of Messi Holding Baby Lamine Yamal As Trading Card

Published

on

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

Topps is creating a trading card of what became a famous photo during the World Cup of Argentina’s Lionel Messi holding Spain’s Lamine Yamal, the company said Monday.

Messi, whom many consider soccer’s greatest player, was photographed holding Yamal, then an infant and now a 19-year-old rising star. The two met in Sunday’s final, with Yamal and Spain defeating Messi and Argentina 1-0.

That game was a potential changing of the guard with the 39-year-old Messi perhaps playing in his final World Cup.

Playing for Barcelona at the time of the initial meeting with Yamal, Messi took part in a fundraising drive for UNICEF and wound up holding the player who could be the future face of the sport. Yamal has followed in Messi’s footsteps by becoming Barcelona’s standout player.

Celtic & Rangers cited after unrest ‘near miss’ at Ibrox

Published

on

Rangers and Celtic face disciplinary charges over the unrest that followed their Scottish Cup meeting at Ibrox in March.

The Scottish Football Association has issued identical notices of complaints to both clubs as it published the independent review on the events surrounding the quarter-final tie.

Both are accused of breaching the SFA’s rule 37, which centres on “good order and security” and “unacceptable conduct”.

The rule covers “policies and procedures” and whether clubs take appropriate measures to identify and deal with supporters who engage in unacceptable conduct.

The clubs face hearings on 13 August.

There were clashes on the pitch after eventual cup-winners Celtic prevailed via a penalty shoot-out on 8 March.

Some visiting fans spilled onto the playing surface to celebrate, with home supporters then trying to confront them as fireworks were thrown back and forth.

At least 37 people have been arrested over the trouble, which resulted in injuries to police and stewards.

Meanwhile, the review describes the events of 8 March as as “a near miss”, saying the ugly scenes “came within a very small margin of becoming a violent mass confrontation”.

Lead author Mark Blackbourne also states that a “crushing incident was a real and foreseeable risk” due to “noncompliant Ultra group fans surging past police and stewards”.

The report adds: “Ultra groups exercise a power over clubs and the wider supporter base that is disproportionate to their size” and that “there seems to be no independent external scrutiny of the clubs’ or Police Scotland’s operational plans for high-risk fixtures”.

It is also pointed out that “the current sanctions framework holds individuals accountable but largely insulates clubs from the consequences of their supporters’ behaviour”, saying this provides “insufficient motivation” to curb the problem.

The review calls for stronger sanctions, suggesting the SFA “has the disciplinary powers to act more severely than they have done but have chosen not to use them”.

An independent SFA judicial panel will consider the review, with chief executive Ian Maxwell saying: “We will work together with the SPFL, clubs, Police Scotland and Scottish government to ensure no repeat of the events that tarnished the image and reputation of the game.”

A special type of athlete

Published

on

Former UFC heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez is confident that Islam Makhachev will continue dominating the sport as the welterweight champion defends the belt at UFC 330.

Makhachev won the welterweight title by dismantling Jack Della Maddalena at UFC 322 and became a two-division champion.

He held the lightweight title before vacating it, and now faces Ian Machado Garry at UFC 330. While Garry has spoken about how he will demolish the champion, Velasquez doesn’t think anyone can stop Makhachev.

Speaking to Red Corner MMA, the former UFC champion lauded Makhachev for being at the top of the game:

“He’s a special type of athlete. As we all know, he’s one of those guys that are at the pinnacle of this sport here.”

He also praised Makhachev’s coach, Javier Mendez, for making champions:

“I talk with Javier [Mendez] all the time and Islam and those guys are always doing great, so they are in great hands. Javier is the one who builds champions. He’s a master of what he does.”

Velasquez ended by adding that Makhachev will continue to win spectacularly:

“I see Islam continuously doing what he is doing, and that’s winning impressively. He’s somebody who has mastered all aspects of MMA.”

Check out Cain Velasquez’s comments below:

Ali Abdelaziz warns Ian Machado Garry of a beating

Islam Makhachev’s manager, Ali Abdelaziz, sent a major warning to Ian Machado Garry ahead of UFC 330.

Garry has taken several shots at Makhachev and claimed he would become the new welterweight champion. However, Abdelaziz claimed that the Irishman was being hyped up and he would be humbled soon:

“He’s 2-1 in his last three fights. He was almost knocked out by Prates and got saved by the bell. He has 10 wins in the UFC, and 8 of them came by decision. Somebody needs to give this young man a reality check, because he’s about to get smashed.”

Abdelaziz also brought up Garry being compared to Conor McGregor, and warned that this could lead to his downfall:

“And he keeps bringing his name up, comparing himself to Conor. First of all, you’re not Conor. You’ll never be Conor. You might actually be a better person than him, because I think Conor has done a lot of things I don’t respect. Just be who you are. Don’t try to be somebody else.”
