NBA Analyst Charles Barkley Chimes in on Ice Spice McDonald’s Fiasco
There’s never a dull moment with Charles Barkley on the desk.
During the Saturday, April 18 playoff edition of “Inside the NBA” talk show, Barkley, 63, chimed in on the obscure story involving rapper Ice Spice’s recent altercation with a fan in a McDonald’s restaurant.
“I hear they got some slappy happy meals over there,” Barkley said during the show — which is sponsored by the fast food restaurant. “You see Ice Spice got slapped at McDonald’s? What you doing at McDonald’s in the middle of the night Ice Spice? Come on, stop that. Get it to go.”
The off-the-cuff comment came while fellow analyst Ernie Johnson was finishing up an ad read for McDonald’s.
“Presented by McDonald’s. How about that, presented by McDonald’s Chuck,” Ernie Johnson said, before Barkey’s rant.
Johnson tried to wrap up the show, but Barkley wasn’t quite done talking about McDonald’s.
“I love McDonald’s,” Barkley said. “Fish fillet is the greatest sandwich ever. Just dip it in that little barbecue sauce. Eat half, double dip.”
From there, Barkley seemed to be just getting started.
“They got a slappy happy meal over there,” he continued later in the show. “Let Ice Spice eat in peace! … She should have slapped her in the face with a Big Mac. You walk up on me, everything’s on the table.”

At that point, the show’s producers got in on the fun, showing the security cam footage from the Ice Spice incident at the restaurant.
“Oh, come on, Spice. Leave that woman alone,” Barkley said as the clip played.
The incident occurred on Wednesday, April 15, when Ice Spice, 26, and her friend were approached by a fan while eating at a McDonald’s.
The incident escalated into a full fight after the fan slapped Ice Spice, and the rapper retaliated. When the fan ran outside of the restaurant, Ice Spice followed, continuing the brawl.
Security camera footage from the incident quickly went viral on social media.
“This wouldn’t happen at Wendy’s,” Ice Spice wrote via X on Friday, April 17, alongside the security footage from the alleged incident.
For whatever it’s worth, the rapper has a partnership with Wendy’s.
“The unprovoked attack on my client has been reported to the LAPD and we will be pursuing any and all avenues to hold the perpetrators responsible for their actions, including criminally and civilly,” the singer’s lawyer Bradford Cohen told Page Six in a statement. “We are also exploring holding the location responsible for their lack of appropriate security.”

18 Best Crime and Mystery Shows on Netflix (April 2026)
Crime and mystery shows are Netflix‘s bread and butter.
Between original series and network classics, the streamer is a one-stop shop for all your crime show needs, from iconic hits like Veronica Mars to new favorites like His & Hers.
This April, Watch With Us has updated its ever-growing list of the best crime and mystery shows that you can stream on Netflix right now.
Our first pick is Big Mistakes, a new crime comedy co-created by Dan Levy and Rachel Sennott that’s currently on Netflix’s top 10 chart.
‘Big Mistakes’ (2026)
When Nicky’s (Levy) sister, Morgan (Taylor Ortega), steals a necklace from a gift shop, she has no idea that the store is run by a Turkish gangster named Yusuf (Boron Kazum). But the two wayward, middle-class adults certainly uncover Yusuf’s dangerous background when he kidnaps both of them and threatens them at gunpoint, blackmailing them into carrying out illicit errands as penance for Morgan’s act of petty theft. Thus, Morgan’s minor criminal act turns into the siblings committing a series of major ones, as the two white-bread suburbanites are thrust into the world of organized crime.
Big Mistakes marks Levy’s return to scripted TV following the conclusion of the hit Canadian sitcom Schitt’s Creek, and while both feature similar fish-out-of-water premises, Big Mistakes is an entirely different wheelhouse. The series is totally binge-worthy with an addictive narrative that plays out across the eight-episode arc, with humor that really hits, family drama that’s affecting and an extremely compelling crime narrative. The excellent cast also features Laurie Metcalf as Nicky and Morgan’s mother.
‘Killing Eve’ (2018-2022)
This fantastic spy thriller series from Phoebe Waller-Bridge and, later, Emerald Fennell, stars Sandra Oh as MI5 agent Eve Polastri, whose dissatisfaction with her job leads her to make a brash mistake that gets her fired. However, her interest in pursuing female assassins leads her to join an underground MI6 division dedicated to tracking Villanelle (Jodie Comer): a psychopathic international assassin who consistently evades capture. But when Eve and Villanelle eventually encounter one another, they find themselves locked in a game of cat-and-mouse that draws both women closer to one another in unexpected ways.
Killing Eve does an excellent job at subverting tropes of spy thrillers and hinging on truly electric chemistry between Comer and Oh. Oh is thrilling in her role portraying the unconventional and messy Eve, while Comer is an utterly magnetic “femme fatale” type of villainous psychopath. The mutual obsession between these disparate parties creates a compelling dynamic, and the sharp writing, genuinely funny dark humor and high production values (from lush cinematography to meticulous costuming) work together to create an unforgettable and dynamic series.
‘Veronica Mars’ (2004-2007)
Popular high school student Veronica Mars (Kristen Bell) has the perfect life and the perfect boyfriend, but it all falls apart following the tragic murder of her best friend Lilly Kane (Amanda Seyfried), the downfall of her respected sheriff father and the abandonment of her mother (Corinne Bohrer). In the aftermath of both Veronica and her father (Enrico Colantoni) being ousted by their community, they open up their own private investigation agency, where Veronica works part-time solving crimes around town.
Though Veronica Mars only lasted for a criminally short three seasons, the series has endured as a cult hit with a passionate fanbase. The show boasts a smart blend of teen drama and crime noir, and Bell commands the show with her magnetic breakout performance. Veronica is a strong female character given rich character development, but the supporting characters are terrific too, creating a show with textured, dense world-building. While the revival season leaves something to be desired, the first run of Veronica Mars is some of the best television ever.
‘How to Get to Heaven from Belfast’ (2026)
After the death of their estranged group member, three close childhood friends reunite at the wake. Saoirse (Roisin Gallagher), Robyn (Sinéad Keenan) and Dara (Caoilfhionn Dunne) travel back home to County Donegal in northwest Ireland to pay respects for their fallen comrade, but when they arrive, they are met with an unsettling discovery at the wake. This leads them to experience a series of strange events that compel them to stay together in their hometown for longer than anticipated, as they investigate the bizarre circumstances surrounding their friend’s mysterious death.
How to Get to Heaven from Belfast comes from the creatives behind Netflix’s beloved comedy Derry Girls, and while Belfast does have some sharp humor, it’s a bit darker than the popular Troubles-set sitcom. Ultimately, series creator Lisa McGee knocks it out of the park yet again, crafting a unique, genre-blending mystery show that is anchored by compelling chemistry between the lead actors, weighty themes, strong emotions and an addictive story that you won’t want to stop watching once you start.
‘Unfamiliar’ (2026)
Meret (Susanne Wolff) and Simon Schäfer (Felix Kramer) are former German spies who have settled down in Berlin, raising their teenage daughter Nina (Maja Bons) while running a restaurant and a safe house together. On the night of their daughter’s sixteenth birthday, a man who’s been attacked requests shelter at their safe house. But the man isn’t all he appears to be, and he bears knowledge of a disastrous covert operation from years ago, the consequences of which the Schäfers have been desperately trying to run from. Suddenly, all their skeletons are threatened to be revealed.
This German espionage thriller has proven to be a surprise hit for Netflix, having only recently debuted and already becoming one of the streamer’s most popular shows. Viewers can’t get enough of Unfamiliar’s riveting twists and turns while also being a smartly written narrative with high-stakes drama, complex, nuanced characters and an emotional grounding that frees it from some of the familiar tropes of spy stories. The fast pace and scant six-episode arc create a truly binge-worthy experience full of surprises you won’t expect.
‘His and Hers’ (2025)
Former news anchor Anna (Tessa Thompson) purposefully spends her days alone and isolated, until she hears about a murder in her hometown of Dahlonega, Georgia. Finding herself suddenly reinvigorated in her career, Anna travels to Dahlonega to investigate, where she is forced to contend with her estranged husband, Jack Harper (Jon Bernthal), who just happens to be assigned to the case. Having been drawn to the killing partly out of curiosity, partly because of loose ends left from her past, Anna searches for the truth while repeatedly butting heads with Jack, who is increasingly suspicious of Anna’s true motives.
This gripping, fast-paced murder-mystery wouldn’t be quite what it is without two compelling performances from Bernthal and Thompson, who really inject some complex character nuance and emotional tension into an already bingeable narrative. Though there are aspects of His & Hers that might strain plausibility, it only adds to the entertaining, crime pulp intrigue of this taut, tight thriller.
‘The Following’ (2013 – 2015)
Over a decade ago, Kevin Bacon was enticed to join his first network TV series, The Following, a mystery thriller with the Tremors actor as former FBI agent Ryan Hardy. After catching a serial killer named Joe Carroll (James Purefoy), Ryan left his job behind and even briefly romanced Carroll’s ex-wife, Claire Matthews (Natalie Zea). The only thing that could bring Ryan out of retirement is the escape of Joe Carroll.
In his time behind bars, Joe has amassed a large following of devoted maniacs who are willing to kill for him and die for him if necessary. It’s a brand new game with Joe as the ringleader, and nearly anyone in Ryan or Claire’s life could be one of the followers hiding in plain sight until it’s time to strike at their enemies.
‘Good Cop/Bad Cop’ (2025)
Good Cop/Bad Cop takes a more comedic approach to the crime and mystery genres, but there are still dramatic stakes and murder cases to investigate. The series is set in Eden Vale, a small town that Chief of Police Hank Hickman (Clancy Brown) has kept relatively crime-free for years. But times are changing and Hickman’s daughter, Detective Lou Hickman (Leighton Meester), badly needs some backup.
Lou gets what she asked for, but not in the way she wanted it. Instead of bringing in a new partner for Lou, Hank recruits his son, Detective Henry Hickman (Luke Cook), to return to town and work alongside Lou. This angers Lou at first, but it turns out that she and her brother make a great team. They may even change Eden Vale’s reputation.
‘City of Shadows’ (2025)
Suspended cop Milo Malart (Isak Férriz) is tapped by Judge Susana Cabrera (Ana Wagener) to look into the circumstances surrounding the mysterious death of a construction company CEO. Ostracized by his other colleagues, Malart is subsequently paired up with Deputy Inspector Rebeca Garrido (Verónica Echegui) to investigate. Ultimately, the single grisly murder ends up being one of a string of ritualistic killings that take place atop historic landmarks in Barcelona. Will Malart be able to find redemption and catch the killer?
City of Shadows prioritizes pacing and atmosphere over shock and gore, and while there are still some twists and turns to look forward to, the show is more interested in showcasing solid storytelling and the fantastic chemistry between its two leads. For crime drama fans who could use less blood and guts and more character drama and moody tension, City of Shadows is likely to be the perfect fit for you.
‘Love and Death’ (2023)
Texan Candy Montgomery (Elizabeth Olsen) lives the normal day-to-day of a late-’70s suburban housewife. But when Candy decides to shake things up and engage in an extramarital affair with her neighbor and friend from church, Allan Gore (Jesse Plemons), things end up turning shockingly deadly. Allan’s wife, Betty (Lily Rabe), is discovered murdered with 41 blows from an axe, and Candy becomes the prime suspect. Love & Death takes a look at the events leading up to this grisly crime, in addition to the trial and the verdict.
Love & Death offers an empathetic look at the boredom and ennui experienced by American housewives in the 20th century, packaged within a genuinely twisted and engaging true-crime story that still raises questions today. Screenwriter David E. Kelley writes Candy’s character with tact, giving her empathy while articulating how her repression could manifest violent outcomes. For her towering performance as Candy, Olsen received a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actress – Limited Series or Television Film.
‘The Beast in Me’ (2025)
Novelist Aggie Wiggs (Claire Danes) has isolated herself in the wake of her son’s tragic death and her divorce from her wife. Struggling with writer’s block while working on her new book, she gets an unexpected source of inspiration: her new next-door neighbor, Nile Jarvis (Matthew Rhys), the prime suspect in his wife’s disappearance. With Jarvis’ invitation, Wiggs begins writing about him. But as their coy, cat-and-mouse relationship progresses, is Wiggs really in danger herself?
This new series from the creatives behind The X-Files and Danes’ own Homeland is constantly engaging crime-thriller pulp led by a pair of phenomenal performances from Rhys and Danes. Critics have lauded the show for its deliciously addictive nature that leaves you guessing with every episode, and the unmistakable chemistry between the two leads in this intriguing mystery and character drama.
‘Absentia’ (2017-Present)
Netflix recently added the Amazon Prime series Absentia, which was sadly cancelled after only three seasons, but is nevertheless a fantastic and absorbing thriller. The show focuses on FBI Agent Emily Byrne (Stana Katic), who is declared dead after going missing while investigating a serial killer. Six years later, Byrne is found in a cabin in the woods with no memory of the previous six years. As she struggles to understand what happened to her, she is implicated in a series of murders.
Castle co-star Katic shines in this wonderfully dark and intense show, with a compelling psychological thriller plot line. The show blends a hybrid of crime investigation, twist-filled mystery and engaging character drama. The excellent pacing and high stakes keep viewers engaged and on the edge of their seats.
‘Untamed’ (2025-Present)
In Yosemite National Park in California, Kyle Turner (Eric Bana) is a special agent for the Investigative Services Branch of the National Park Service. Turner is tasked with investigating the death of a woman who fell from a cliff and curiously ended up with a gnawed leg and a gunshot wound before she fell. The investigation of the dark crime leads Turner into the lawless terrain of the open wilderness as his own past wounds open up to haunt his present day.
Untamed is a stellar crime thriller with a central mystery that will keep you hooked throughout the scant six-episode season, and is bolstered by a gravitas-heavy performance from Bana. Plus, the gorgeous backdrop of the real-life Yosemite is easy on the eyes as Bana is. In addition to Bana, the terrific supporting cast includes Rosemarie DeWitt (The Boys) and Sam Neill (Jurassic Park).
‘Black Rabbit’ (2025-Present)
Mismatched brothers Jake (Jude Law) and Vince (Jason Bateman) are reunited in New York City, as Vince’s chaotic, hard-up life leads him to getting a job working at his successful brother’s elite restaurant, Black Rabbit — which he happened to co-found and once owned alongside Jake. But any semblance of a happy reunion is short-lived, and both brothers find themselves navigating the criminal underworld as they evade loan sharks whom Vince owes money to.
While you might not have guessed Bateman and Law to play convincing siblings, Black Rabbit received praise in particular for the chemistry between the two actors. Their simpatico performances elevate the gritty, fast-paced crime story that has received comparisons to the Safdie brothers’ anxiety-inducing Uncut Gems. Riveting and endlessly engaging, Black Rabbit is a prestige thrill ride like no other.
‘Beauty and the Bester’ (2025)
In 2022, convicted rapist and scammer Thabo Bester appeared to have committed suicide in his jail cell, where he was serving life in prison after his conviction in 2012. When his burned body turned up in his jail cell, authorities presumed self-immolation. But one year later, Bester is found living under an alias in Johannesburg, with his alleged escape accomplice and lover, the influencer aesthetics doctor Nandipha Magudumana. They were arrested and are currently awaiting trial.
Beauty and the Bester takes a look at this absurd, modern-day South African Bonnie and Clyde story: the circumstances surrounding Bester — dubbed the “Facebook rapist” — and his initial conviction, his alleged escape and aftermath, and the psychology behind his bizarre, ill-fated relationship with Magudumana. Using a variety of testimony from various sources, Beauty and the Bester crafts a compelling portrait of a real-life case that’s the stuff of movies.
‘Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story’ (2024)
The second season of Ryan Murphy’s Monster anthology series takes a look at the infamous Menendez brothers case from 1989, in which the two brothers (played by Cooper Koch and Nicholas Alexander Chavez in the show) killed both of their parents after allegedly enduring years of abuse. The show depicts the fraught family life between the brothers and their parents, offering a depiction of the environment in which children could be led to commit parricide.
A newly minted Emmy winner, Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story features exceptional lead performances from Javier Bardem and Chlöe Sevigny, who play the brothers’ parents, José and Kitty Menendez. Using a Rashomon-style storytelling device, the series utilizes different perspectives on important events and potentially unreliable narrators to paint a portrait of the case that is ultimately left up to interpretation by the viewer.
‘Mindhunter’ (2017-2019)
Set in the late 1970s, Mindhunter follows two FBI agents who track down psychopathic killers by getting into their heads. Agents Holden Ford (Jonathan Groff) and Bill Tench (Holt McCallany) deign to understand the psychology of a serial killer, looking at their upbringings and mangled psyches to think like them. While effectively pioneering modern serial killer profiling, the two agents find themselves often getting a little too close to their subjects.
Executive produced by director David Fincher (who frequently directed episodes, oversaw the screenwriting and production, and was viewed by many as the de facto showrunner), Mindhunter was sadly canceled after only two seasons but had developed a passionate fanbase. The series was widely acclaimed, unique within its genre for its cinematic visual flair and painstaking character development. At the same time, Groff and McCallany have fantastic chemistry, which adds a richness to the already compelling and detailed narrative.
‘Dark’ (2017-2020)
When walking home through the woods with friends, a child mysteriously vanishes one night in the small German town of Winden. In the race to find him, secrets are revealed among the otherwise ordinary citizens and their families, along with the troubled history that the town rests on — and that they are all connected to. The interconnections between past and present prove to be cosmic, and a dark, supernatural secret that’s been hiding in plain sight threatens to unravel both Winden and the entire world.
Starring Louis Hoffman and a cast of talented, mostly unknown-to-Americans German actors, Dark is a stellar hybridization of science fiction, crime drama, and mystery, working as a piece of puzzle box art filled with complex twists and existentialist themes. The intricate nature of the multi-generational plot includes a time-travel conspiracy, while handling its expansive web of characters and decades with care. The first German-language show produced for Netflix, Dark transcends genre trappings. It’s an atmospheric, philosophical slow-burn that can’t be missed.

Alex Cooper’s Husband Accused of Yelling at Her Staff: Report
Things at Alex Cooper’s Unwell Network appear to be, well, unwell, according to a new report.
A Bloomberg article published on Monday, April 20, alleged that Cooper’s podcast network has seen a dramatic turnover in staff over the past two years. The piece also claimed that Cooper’s husband, film and TV producer Matt Kaplan, who Bloomberg said runs the network’s day-to-day operations, has been at the center of internal turmoil.
According to the report, Kaplan “has earned a reputation for frequently yelling at staff members,” resulting in crew members reportedly threatening to walk off projects if he “doesn’t keep his distance.”
The piece further alleged issues on the set of the network’s recent YouTube series, Unwell Winter Games. Kaplan allegedly “berated the staff on set and threatened to prevent them from ever working in Hollywood again if they messed up, resulting in a prominent, long-experienced crew member breaking down in tears.”
Us Weekly has reached out to representatives for Cooper, Kaplan and Unwell for comment.
Cooper, 31, and Kaplan, 42, launched the Unwell Network in 2023 as a burgeoning network of podcasts anchored by Cooper’s own hit show, “Call Her Daddy.” The company has since expanded into TV production and live events and launched its own creative agency.

Cooper and Kaplan, who is credited as a producer on the To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before film series and spinoff TV show XO, Kitty, wed in April 2024. He was previously married to The Vampire Diaries actress Claire Holt from 2016 to 2017.
Earlier this month, Cooper hit the headlines as she addressed her falling out with former Unwell podcaster Alix Earle. Earle’s “Hot Mess” podcast was dropped by Unwell in February 2025, Variety reported at the time, and rumors have since circulated of a feud between the former colleagues.
Cooper directly addressed the Dancing With the Stars alum after Earle, 25, reposted a shady TikTok that referred to Cooper as the “grim reaper.”
“Just say what you gotta say about me. There’s no NDA, and no one is stopping you. Stop hiding behind other people and just say it yourself. What’s the beef?” Cooper hit back in a subsequent TikTok video on April 13. “I’m really tired of waking up and seeing you using this fake drama to distract from other s*** going online for you. Not interested. I know what happened and so do you. So talk. Unless the fake narrative that you’re creating happens to be way more interesting than the truth. I have nothing to hide when it comes to you and me.”
Earle responded directly to Cooper, writing in the TikTok video’s comments section, “OK on it!!” Earle has yet to publicly share details of the apparent conflict, however.

Eminem Marks 18 Years Of Sobriety With Milestone Post
Eminem is celebrating a major personal milestone, marking 18 years of sobriety with a recent post on Instagram. The rapper shared a simple photo highlighting the significance of his long journey toward recovery. The rapper is known for his openness about past struggles, with the achievement reflecting years of commitment that have drawn supportive reactions from his friends and fans.
Eminem Shares A Photo Of His Sobriety Chip
On April 20, Eminem, born Marshall Bruce Mathers III, shared a simple post on his social media showing off a black and gold sobriety chip with the roman numeral “XVIII,” marking 18 years of his being sober. The saying “To thine own self be true” was inscribed on the border, and the words “unity,” “service,” and “recovery” were written on the sides of a triangle. He added the caption “XVIII,” followed by a 1st place medal emoji.
Many followers congratulated the 53-year-old rapper on the remarkable milestone, with one writing, “My GOAT is 18 years sober, so happy for you unc.” One user added, “F-cking 18 years. That’s called standing the test of time in a nutshell.”
Others also shared photos of their sobriety chips, with one person sharing that Eminem motivated him. “LETS GO KING!!! Inspired me to quit when I saw you in Austin! I’m proud to be 1 YEAR SOBER!!!!”
The Rapper Had A Near-Fatal Overdose In 2007

Eminem has been open about his substance issues, and once shared that he took between 10 and 20 pills daily. “I was taking Valium, Ambien, and Vicodin. And I was taking a lot… The numbers got so high I don’t even know what I was taking,” he wrote in an essay for Vibe magazine.
The rapper had been going through personal issues leading up to his near-fatal overdose in 2007. He filed for divorce for a second time from Kim Scott the year prior, and his best friend was killed in a bar fight the following week. In December 2007, Eminem collapsed in the bathroom of his home after overdosing on methadone pills. He was rushed to the hospital, where doctors said that if he had been brought in two hours later, he wouldn’t have survived.
“I didn’t even want to believe it was a disease. But I realized it when I f-cking almost died and then I still went back to using. I literally almost died,” he shared.
Eminem Detailed His Overdose In A Documentary
In 2025, the documentary “Stans” was released, which focused on the rapper’s career through the eyes of his fans. In it, Eminem shared details of his overdose, saying that he was in a “vicious” cycle of depression and popping pills. “I woke up in the hospital and I didn’t know what happened. I woke up in the hospital with tubes in me and sh-t and I couldn’t get up. I wanted to move,” he said.
One of the biggest reasons he decided to get sober was his daughter, Hailie Jade. Eminem had missed her first guitar recital due to his overdose, and he was wracked with guilt. At that moment, the rapper thought that if he couldn’t be sober for himself, he could at least do it for his daughter. He entered rehab in 2008 and has been sober since.
Elton John Helped The Rapper In His Sobriety Journey
One of the people Eminem turned to for guidance in his sobriety journey was legendary singer Elton John, who has been sober since 1990. In 2010, John said in an interview, “I’ve been helping Eminem in the last 18 months, and he is doing brilliantly,” as reported by The Guardian.
The rapper said he thought of the singer when he decided to get sober, as John was also in the entertainment business and could relate to his lifestyle. “He understands, like, the pressure and any other reasons that you wanna come up with for doing drugs,” Eminem shared.
Eminem and John first met at the 2001 Grammys when they performed “Stan” together. At that time, the rapper was criticized over lyrics that some perceived as homophobic. However, in later years, John defended the rapper, saying that he never viewed him as homophobic. The two have since developed a close bond that extends beyond their work in entertainment.
Eminem Became A Grandfather For The Second Time

His 18-year sobriety isn’t the only thing Eminem is celebrating. On April 14, the rapper’s adopted daughter, Alaina Marie Scott, gave birth to a daughter named Scottie. The birth marks Eminem’s second time becoming a grandfather in less than two years.
In March 2025, Hailie gave birth to a son named Elliot Marshall McClintok, with the middle name serving as a nod to her father.
Eminem is reportedly working on various projects, and according to his manager, Paul Rosenberg, he is developing new music. However, there has been no confirmation on when a new album will be released.

David Bowie’s Forgotten 1987 Masterpiece Comes From His Least-Favorite Album
When he’s not on stage as Ziggy Stardust, he’s known as David Bowie from Brixton. At 13, he picked up the saxophone, unaware that both the instrument and London’s jazz scene would help shape his future career. After adopting the Bowie name in 1966, he quickly adopted experimental ideas, though early success was limited. In the 1960s, his surreal influences — ranging from mime to Buddhism — felt unconventional for a newcomer. His breakthrough finally came in 1969 with “Space Oddity,” proving there’s a place for visionaries like him.
By the 1980s, Bowie had become a household name synonymous with innovation. He collaborated with major artists, including Queen and Mick Jagger. Yet, despite his pop star status, Bowie never lost sight of the social issues rampant during his time. Music became his tool to amplify marginalized voices, most notably this particular song — a track from, ironically, his least favorite album.
David Bowie’s “Day-In Day-Out” Speaks About America’s Poverty Crisis
In “Day-In Day-Out”, Bowie proves that pop stars can be political. Serving as the opening track of his seventeenth studio album Never Let Me Down, the song became the record’s most successful single. However, compared to his earlier hits, it only reached number 17 in the United Kingdom and charted within the global top 40, giving it moderate success and leaving it as something of an overlooked gem. Although Bowie was English, the song sharply critiques homelessness and urban poverty in the United States.
Who’s Your Perfect Classic Rock Band?
“Day-In Day-Out” illustrates the harsh cycle experienced by the less fortunate by putting the main character in precarious positions. The song begins with a child born into unsafe conditions (“She was born in a handbag”) and continuing through a life shaped by instability and lack of support (“What she lacks is a backup / Nothing seems to make a dent”). Instead of receiving help, the woman is pushed toward dangerous means of survival, from petty theft (“Stealing for that one good rush”) to prostitution (“She’s hanging on his arms”). The song ultimately acts as a wake-up call, emphasizing that poverty is sustained by a vicious cycle that can only be broken through meaningful support. While not identical, a similar theme appears in “Brenda’s Got a Baby” by Tupac Shakur.
‘Never Let Me Down’ Is David Bowie’s Least Favorite Album
Ironically enough, “Day-In Day-Out” is the opening track on the one album Bowie considered his least favorite: “My nadir was Never Let Me Down. It was such an awful album. I really shouldn’t have even bothered going into the studio to record it. I’m not happy with it.” In a 1987 interview with Q magazine, Bowie elaborated on the technical reasons why the album didn’t sit well with him.
“I thought it was great material that got simmered down to product level. I really should have not done it quite so studio-ly. I think some of it was a waste of really good songs. You should hear the demos from those albums. It’s night and day by comparison with the finished tracks. There’s stuff on the two albums since Let’s Dance that I could really kick myself about. When I listen to those demos it’s, How did it turn out like that?”
Although the rock guitarist never deployed, he knew exactly what war sounds like.
“Day-In Day-Out” isn’t the only track from Never Let Me Down where Bowie advocates for a cause. His second single, “Time Will Crawl,” takes listeners to Eastern Europe, addressing the Chernobyl disaster, which occurred just a year before the album’s release. Similar to “Day-In Day-Out,” the track achieved only moderate success, peaking at Number seven on Billboard’s Mainstream Rock Tracks chart.
The Music Video for “Day-In Day-Out” Was Banned by Television Stations
Just like the song, the music video for “Day-In Day-Out” made a strong impression — even at the cost of being banned or restricted by TV stations. The video follows the storyline described in the lyrics, opening with a literal baby in a bag placed on the steps of City Hall. It then cuts to a lone woman roaming the streets of Los Angeles at night as she carries her baby. As the clip plays out, it becomes clear she is not built for life on the streets, where danger lurks around every corner.
The video also contains sensitive material that didn’t sit well with audiences. These include scenes of the woman dressed as a sex worker, being pulled into a car and sexually assaulted, getting arrested while wearing only lingerie, and police raiding her home with a tank — suggesting how even temporary shelter can be unfairly taken away. Despite limited viewing, the video was nominated at the MTV Video Music Awards for Best Male Video, but lost to Peter Gabriel’s “Sledgehammer.”

‘Michael’ Is a Dazzling, Incomplete Spectacle About the King of Pop
“Everyone remembers where they were when that happened.” The phenomenon, called a flashbulb memory, occurs when people can recall their surroundings in vivid detail the moment they learn of shocking historic events — the moon landing, the fall of the Berlin Wall, September 11th, and more. I will always remember when I was 13 years old at my neighborhood swimming pool, on June 25th, 2009, learning that Michael Jackson had died.
It’s hard — likely impossible, really — to sum up the musician’s legacy in a film, but Antoine Fuqua’s Michael sees that as a challenge worth taking, attempting to capture the life of one of the most famous people in history within a two-hour runtime. In addition to being skeptical that anyone could pull that off, I’m quickly growing tired of the seemingly endless music biopics, from everything between Bohemian Rhapsody to Deliver Me From Nowhere, but I must admit, I left Michael pleasantly surprised. It’s not a perfect film by any stretch of the imagination, falling victim to clichéd and formulaic parts of the genre at some points while also playing it far too safe with its characters. But ultimately, the film successfully celebrates the legend’s essence while simultaneously serving as a complex, compelling family drama.
What Is ‘Michael’ About?
Michael depicts the life of Michael Jackson, and a good portion is dedicated to his early years in Gary, Indiana, as his domineering father Joe (Colman Domingo) attempts to mold him and his siblings into the Jackson 5 and reach superstardom at any cost. Contrastly, his loving mother Katherine (Nia Long) watches on conflicted about Joe’s harsh, abusive methods. Despite how difficult it is to witness, Joe’s ambition and training soon pay off, with the family skyrocketing to the top and making the move to a fancy home in Los Angeles when Michael is around 11.
But that immediate influx of fame comes with a massive amount of pressure for Michael. As he gets older, he struggles to find independence and identity, particularly due to the intense control of his father and his determination to keep the Jackson 5 together indefinitely. Michael may be one of the most beloved people in the world, but he’s also one of the loneliest, and that juxtaposition makes for a fascinating conflict. The film depicts iconic milestones fans will be itching to see, showcasing both the highs (like filming the “Thriller” music video) and lows (the infamous Pepsi commercial fire) of Michael’s career throughout the ‘70s and ‘80s at the peak of his popularity.
‘Michael’s Actors Completely Disappear Into Their Roles, But Most of Them Are Overly Sanitized
Michael wouldn’t work without an actor who could fully embody him. Full stop. It’s the title of the movie, after all. So the fact that they found not one, but two exceptional young performers to do just that with Juliano Valdi and Jaafar Jackson (yes, there is a relation; Jaafar is the late Michael’s nephew) is a major feat in and of itself. They both have the singing and dancing chops to pull it off — something the entire world will no doubt be looking at with critical eyes — but they also capture Michael’s unique presence and emotional journey. Valdi has a combination of boundless charisma and heartbreaking vulnerability that naturally makes you want to root for and protect him in equal measure. Jackson nails the smallest nuances and eccentricities one associates with Michael without ever feeling like a caricature. There is a devastating rawness to his performance, too, as you can see how much Michael is craving authentic connection yet unable to achieve it, ironically isolated despite everyone knowing his name.
It is because Valdi and Jackson are such strong performers that I wish the script trusted them more by allowing them to play with the less palatable, more complicated parts of his personality. Every human being makes mistakes and has flaws, but Michael only explores the darker, uglier side of one person: Joe. Domingo is unsurprisingly excellent, reminding us once again why he was nominated for an Oscar two years in a row. He can be downright terrifying, and I found myself tensing up and holding my breath every time he came onscreen. He’s hard to read, and the unpredictability and volatility simmering under his surface are palpable and intense.
And yet he is never a one-dimensional villain, either. Domingo imbues him with enough layers and subtleties that, even when Joe is being cruel or manipulative, it’s easy to believe he does truly have his family’s best interests at heart — even if there’s an element of selfishness to it, and even if it’s showcased in a twisted way. The scenes between Joe and Katherine are some of the film’s strongest and most riveting, with a fantastic performance by Long, though she ends up feeling a tad underutilized outside of her major scenes with Domingo. Frankly, there’s enough material for a whole separate film focused solely on their marriage.
‘Michael’ Is a Dazzling Spectacle (Albeit an Incomplete One)
In addition to Katherine and Joe’s storyline, the film also includes enough footage to make one believe there’s a whole second movie centering on Michael… and that’s because there is. The original film was reportedly around four hours long, and it’s fairly obvious that there were large chunks left on the cutting room floor. The most notable exclusion is that there’s no mention of the singer’s child abuse allegations. (Though there is a scene of him visiting children in the hospital, which is a strange inclusion considering the controversies are overlooked without note.) It’s a notable omission, as there is a clause in one of the accuser’s settlements barring his mention or depiction in Michael that forced the film into expensive reshoots, but it does contribute to the movie’s lack of cohesion.
The film’s ending is less than satisfactory; as magical as it is to see some of Michael’s largest concerts recreated, the direction is uneven, with the interspersed crowd shots taking you out of the performances rather than immersing you in the setting. The fact that the movie ends with several of them back-to-back makes it lose steam quickly, the moment the ending finally feels abrupt and jarring. The choice to conclude the movie with a Marvel-esque “Michael Jackson Will Return” card to tease a sequel comes off like a bit ripped out of a Saturday Night Live sketch, but rest assured, it’s very real. (Both producer Graham King and Lionsgate chairman Adam Fogelson have talked about the hope and strong possibility for a second movie, depending on this one’s performance. If they were smart, they would’ve called this one Jackson, due to its centering on his time in the Jackson 5, and the sequel Michael, since it would focus on his time as a solo artist, but that’s neither here nor there.)
Michael may not rewrite the musical biopic, but it does just enough to set itself apart and inject a bit of new life into the genre by leaning into the family drama at its core. The performances are top-tier across the board, with Valdi and Jackson immediately becoming stars to watch and Domingo and Long proving once again why they’re considered two of the best in the business. The level of craftsmanship — from the hair and makeup to the costumes and production design — is unmatched, helping to compensate for a weaker screenplay and inconsistent direction. It may not be a masterpiece, but I’ll make a trip to the theater when the inevitable sequel comes around. I have no doubt the King of Pop will be the new King of the Box Office, and unlike Jackson’s 1987 album, that’s not a Bad thing at all.

Jennifer Lopez Avoiding ‘Rebound’ Romance With Co-Star
Jennifer Lopez isn’t looking for anything serious from her alleged “rebound” relationship with her Netflix co-star, Brett Goldstein. The “Let’s Get Loud” singer made headlines in April 2025 after a source shared that she and Goldstein were getting friendly on the set of their movie, “Office Romance,” which was filmed just three months after the superstar finalized her divorce from Ben Affleck. Today, more details are coming to light.
Jennifer Lopez Is Reportedly Ready To Move On From ‘Rebound’ Relationship With Her Netflix Co-Star

A source who spoke to In Touch told the outlet that, despite hitting it off with Goldstein last summer, Lopez is not looking for anything serious at the moment. “She had fun with him, there’s no denying that, and she still thinks he’s a genuinely lovely guy, but it was never going to turn into anything serious for her,” the insider said, adding that the singer allegedly always saw him “as a rebound.”
The insider claimed that Lopez enjoyed her time with the actor while filming; however, he doesn’t meet all of her needs. “She is someone who has a very clear vision for her life, she knows what it takes for a man to hold her interest long term and she doesn’t want to set anyone up for failure,” they added.
Goldstein Reportedly Doesn’t Fit In With The Jennifer Lopez Brand

Lopez, who appeared in “In Living Color” before becoming a bona fide superstar, is reportedly looking out for herself and Goldstein with her decision.
“This isn’t just about what she wants on a personal level,” the source said. “She has brand J.Lo to think of and after being dumped so publicly by a huge A-list movie star like Ben, her next boyfriend needs to match him on every level, from star quality to bank balance.”
The news of Lopez’s alleged stance on her reported fling with Goldstein comes months after she wrapped the Netflix film “Office Romance.” At the time, a source told In Touch that the pair had been flourishing under the bright lights, citing their “obvious chemistry.”
“They’re both professional and ready to deliver their lines when the cameras are rolling, but in between, it’s a flirt fest,” the insider added. “Brett fawns all over Jennifer, and she’s absolutely loving the attention. He is so adoring, which is exactly what she needs right now.”
Goldstein Reportedly Helped Jennifer Lopez Get Her Sexy Back

Lopez’s involvement in “Office Romance” came just three months after she finalized her divorce from Ben Affleck. Their relationship was messy, divorcing two years after saying “I Do” in front of their family and friends in August 2022.
Lopez’s sudden split from the “Hypnotic” star reportedly left her bummed and impacted her confidence. Her alleged budding romance with Goldstein, though, helped her get through it.
“She’s much happier now. Everyone has noticed the change. There’s a new carefree energy about her,” the source said.
Affleck Got Candid About Living Life With Lopez Despite Hating The Spotlight

In March 2025, Affleck opened up about his highly publicized relationship with Lopez, admitting there was some tension due to their differing views on being public figures.
“My temperament is to be a little bit more reserved and private than hers,” he told GQ. “As happens in relationships, you don’t always have the same attitude towards these things.”
While Affleck preferred to stay away from the spotlight, he said he knew that wouldn’t be possible while married to Lopez.
“You don’t marry a ship captain and then say, ‘Well, I don’t like going out in the water.’ You’ve got to own what you knew going into any relationship,” he said.
Did Lopez And Affleck End Things On Bad Terms?

Despite their divorce being headline-making news, Affleck said that his split from Lopez wasn’t due to any major controversy. “There’s a tendency to look at breakups and want to identify root causes or something,” he said before clearing the air on their breakup.
“There’s no scandal, no soap opera, no intrigue. The truth is, when you talk to somebody, ‘Hey, what happened?’ Well, there is no, ‘This is what happened.’ It’s just a story about people trying to figure out their lives and relationships in ways that we all sort of normally do,” he said.
