Former India captain Virat Kohli heaped praise on Sanju Samson for his heroics after the Suryakumar Yadav-led side beat New Zealand in the T20 World Cup 2026 final. While lauding the wicketkeeper-batter for winning the Player of the Tournament award, Kohli credited him for stepping up in crucial matches for the Men in Blue.

Kohli’s remarks came after Samson smashed a hat-trick of half-centuries against the West Indies (97* off 50 balls in virtual quarterfinal), England (89 off 42 in semifinal, and the Kiwis (89 off 46 in summit clash) in the last three games.

Notably, the Kerala batter managed 46 runs in five matches against the Black Caps in the five-match T20I series earlier this year. He then scored 22 (8) and 24 (15) against Namibia and Zimbabwe in the group-stage and Super 8 games, respectively, but India stuck with him for the crunch matches.

While dedicating an Instagram story to Samson, Kohli wrote:

“What a remarkable tournament from the most well deserved man of the tournament @imsanjusamson. You performed when it mattered the most. Really happy for you chetta.”
