Ronaldo to Neymar: Players who have made their last World Cup appearance | FIFA World Cup 2026

Published

on

The 2026 FIFA World Cup will be remembered not only for Spain’s dramatic triumph over Argentina in the final but also as the tournament that signalled the end of an era. As football prepares for the next World Cup in 2030, several players who shaped the modern game have bid farewell to the sport’s biggest stage.

Four of the game’s biggest names — Cristiano Ronaldo, Neymar, Manuel Neuer and Guillermo Ochoa — have either confirmed that the tournament was their last World Cup or announced the end of their international careers following their teams’ elimination.

While big names such as Lionel Messi, Kevin De Bruyne, Virgil van Dijk and many others have not yet announced the end of their journeys, given the age they will be at the time of the 2030 World Cup, they have likely graced the World Cup stage for the final time.

In this article, we take a look at players who have already confirmed their final World Cup appearances, as well as players who are likely to have played their last World Cup match. But which players have made the list? Take a look.

Players who made their final World Cup appearance:

Cristiano Ronaldo (Portugal)

Cristiano Ronaldo’s dream of lifting the FIFA World Cup ended in Dallas after Portugal suffered a 1-0 defeat to Spain in the Round of 16. Moments after the defeat, the 41-year-old confirmed that the 2026 edition had been his final World Cup, ending months of speculation over whether he would attempt one final campaign in 2030.

“I go with a clear conscience,” Ronaldo said after the match, adding that he had given everything for Portugal and was proud of the nation’s achievements during his international career.

Ronaldo made his World Cup debut in Germany in 2006 and became the first men’s player to score in six different FIFA World Cups. Across six editions, he helped Portugal reach the semi-finals in 2006, the quarter-finals in 2022 and the Round of 16 on three occasions. Although the World Cup trophy eluded him, he finished as one of the competition’s greatest performers.

Neymar Jr (Brazil)

Neymar’s emotional international career came to an end after Brazil’s shock 2-1 defeat to Norway in the Round of 16. The forward, who had battled injuries for nearly three years before making the squad, announced his retirement from international football moments after the loss.

“It is now over,” Neymar said after Brazil’s elimination, confirming that the World Cup had been his final appearance for the Seleção.

Neymar represented Brazil at four FIFA World Cups, beginning with the home tournament in 2014. His memorable performances in Brazil were cut short by a back injury in the quarter-finals, while he also featured in Russia in 2018, Qatar in 2022 and the expanded 2026 tournament. He retires as Brazil’s all-time leading scorer and one of the country’s finest attacking players.

Manuel Neuer (Germany)

Manuel Neuer’s remarkable international journey concluded after Germany’s penalty-shootout defeat to Paraguay in the Round of 32. Following the match, the 40-year-old confirmed that it had been his final appearance for the national team, bringing an end to one of the greatest goalkeeping careers in football history.

Neuer made his World Cup debut in South Africa in 2010 and became Germany’s undisputed No. 1. He won the Golden Glove as Germany lifted the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil and revolutionised the goalkeeping position with his aggressive “sweeper-keeper” style. Between 2010 and 2026, he featured in five World Cups.

Guillermo Ochoa became one of only a handful of players to appear at six FIFA World Cups when he represented Mexico in 2026. The veteran goalkeeper later confirmed that the tournament would be his final appearance on football’s biggest stage, ending one of the longest World Cup careers in history.

Ochoa first travelled to the World Cup in Germany in 2006 and went on to become synonymous with Mexico’s performances at the tournament. His stunning displays against Brazil in 2014 and Germany in 2018 remain among the most iconic goalkeeping performances in recent World Cup history. Across two decades, he became one of Mexico’s greatest-ever internationals.

Players who have likely played their last World Cup match

Lionel Messi (Argentina)

Lionel Messi came within one victory of ending his World Cup career on the highest note before Spain edged Argentina 1-0 after extra time in the final. At 39, the Argentine captain produced another memorable campaign, guiding the defending champions to back-to-back finals.

Although Messi has not announced his retirement from international football, he admitted after the final that he would take time before making a decision on his future. By the time the next World Cup arrives in 2030, he will be 43, making another appearance highly unlikely.

Messi made his World Cup debut as an 18-year-old in Germany in 2006 and went on to become one of the greatest players in the tournament’s history. He reached the 2014 final, lifted the trophy in Qatar in 2022 and became one of the few players to feature in six World Cups. His career includes some of the most iconic moments in World Cup history, from his first goal against Serbia and Montenegro in 2006 to leading Argentina to glory in 2022.

Luka Modrić (Croatia)

Luka Modrić once again carried Croatia’s midfield at the age of 40, but the Vatreni were eliminated by Portugal in the Round of 32. Although the Ballon d’Or winner has not announced his retirement, he will be 44 during the 2030 World Cup, making another appearance improbable.

Modrić made his World Cup debut in 2006 and captained Croatia during the nation’s greatest footballing era. He led them to the 2018 final, where they finished runners-up to France, and followed it up with a third-place finish in 2022. His consistency across five World Cups cemented his place among the greatest midfielders of his generation.

Belgium once again fell short of ending their wait for a major international trophy despite reaching the quarter-finals. Kevin De Bruyne, who turned 35 during the tournament, continued to orchestrate Belgium’s midfield but could not prevent a 2-1 defeat to eventual champions Spain.

While he has made no retirement announcement, De Bruyne will be 39 in 2030.

The midfielder featured in four World Cups, helping Belgium finish third in Russia in 2018, their best-ever World Cup result. Widely regarded as one of the finest playmakers of his generation, De Bruyne became the face of Belgium’s golden era.

Virgil van Dijk captained the Netherlands for a third consecutive World Cup, but the Oranje bowed out to Morocco in the Round of 32 after a penalty shootout. At 35, the defender remains one of football’s elite centre-backs, but another World Cup appearance at 39 appears a long shot.

Van Dijk missed the 2018 World Cup after the Netherlands failed to qualify before making his debut in Qatar in 2022. He captained the side again in 2026 and established himself as one of the finest defenders of his generation.

Casemiro returned to Brazil’s World Cup squad after missing parts of the previous international cycle, but the five-time champions’ campaign ended in disappointment against Norway in the Round of 16. By 2030, the midfielder will be 38, and Brazil are expected to transition towards a younger core.

Casemiro represented Brazil at three World Cups and scored memorable goals, including the winner against Switzerland in Qatar in 2022. He formed one of the world’s most formidable midfield combinations alongside Neymar and others during Brazil’s recent era.

Mohamed Salah finally returned to football’s biggest stage after Egypt qualified for the expanded 48-team tournament. However, Egypt were eliminated in the group stage despite Salah’s efforts. At 34, he will be 38 in 2030.

After making his World Cup debut in Russia in 2018 while carrying a shoulder injury, Salah had to wait eight years for another appearance after Egypt missed qualification in 2022. He finally returned in 2026, providing one of the tournament’s biggest stories for African football.

Cape Verde’s historic World Cup debut owed much to veteran goalkeeper Vozinha, who captained the side during their maiden appearance. At 40, the goalkeeper inspired one of the tournament’s biggest underdog stories before Cape Verde were edged out by Argentina in the Round of 32.

The 2026 tournament marked Vozinha’s first and likely only World Cup. While he lacks the decorated résumé of the other players on this list, his role in taking Cape Verde to the global stage secured him a special place in the country’s football history.

The changing of the guard

Whether or not Lionel Messi, Luka Modrić, Kevin De Bruyne, Virgil van Dijk, Casemiro, Mohamed Salah and Vozinha officially retire from international football, the 2026 FIFA World Cup is likely to be remembered as their final appearance on the biggest stage.

Along with the confirmed farewells of Cristiano Ronaldo, Neymar, Manuel Neuer and Guillermo Ochoa, their departures signal the end of one of football’s greatest generations.

The spotlight now shifts to a new wave of stars led by Lamine Yamal, Kylian Mbappé, Erling Haaland, Jude Bellingham, Florian Wirtz and Pedri, who are expected to define the road to the 2030 FIFA World Cup.

CJ Abrams homered for the second straight game, one of three home runs for Washington, and the Nationals beat the Colorado Rockies 7-3 in Denver on Monday night.

Jacob Young also went deep and finished with three hits, Curtis Mead contributed three hits, and Andres Chaparro hit his fourth home run for Washington, which has won two in a row and leads majors with 147 homers.

Riley Cornelio (1-1) tossed 1 2/3 innings of scoreless relief and Tom Cosgrove got the final six outs for his first save.

Jake McCarthy led Colorado with a pair of hits. The Rockies, who have dropped three of their first four out of the All-Star break, have the worst record in the National League.

The Nationals jumped on Colorado starter Kyle Freeland. James Wood drew a walk to lead off the game, Mead followed with a single to center and Chaparro hit the first pitch he saw from Freeland into the seats in left-center field.

Washington threatened for more in the first when Dylan Crews walked and Young singled with one out, but Freeland retired the next two batters to end the frame.

The Rockies loaded the bases in the third with two singles and a walk against Washington starter Andrew Alvarez, and Castro cleared them with a two-out double to center to tie it 3-3.

Alvarez allowed three runs on six hits over 4 1/3 innings.

Tempers flared in the fifth. Chaparro flew out to right field and on his trot back to the dugout ran over part of the mound, drawing the ire of Freeland. Benches and bullpens cleared but the incident didn’t escalate and no one was ejected.

Young broke the tie in the sixth inning when he led off against Freeland with his ninth home run. Abrams extended the lead in seventh when he hit a two-run shot off Antonio Senzatela, his 22nd homer of the season.

Freeland (2-9) gave up four runs on seven hits in his six innings of work.

The Nationals tacked on a run in the ninth with Daylen Lile’s two-out RBI triple.

World Matchplay Darts 2026 results: Luke Humphries suffers shock first-round loss to Cameron Menzies

Published

on

World number two Luke Humphries is out of the World Matchplay after a shock first-round loss to Scotland’s Cameron Menzies.

The former world champion was punished for some poor finishing and lost his first six legs with the darts before finally holding throw.

Humphries threatened to stage a dramatic comeback, winning four legs on the spin to get back to 8-7 but Menzies sealed a stunning 10-7 victory in style by reeling in the ‘big fish’ – a maximum 170 checkout.

The result will come as a huge disappointment to Humphries after he had shown signs of returning to top form – beating Luke Littler to win the US Darts Masters in June – in the past couple of months after a slow start to the year.

But for Menzies, ranked 27th in the world, it is a momentous victory and one he says he “will take to his grave” as he becomes one of just three unseeded players to advance at this year’s tournament.

The Scot will now face 15th seed Ross Smith in the second round on Wednesday after the Englishman’s 10-6 win over Netherlands’ Kevin Doets.

Both players averaged over 100 and managed over 50% on the doubles in a high-quality match but Smith hit when it mattered most to progress.

Meanwhile, Gerwyn Price survived a scare before overcoming Germany’s Martin Schindler 11-9.

The Welshman admitted it was “probably one I should’ve lost” after falling 4-0 and 6-2 behind.

Even after fighting back to take his first lead at 9-8, Price was made to work to finish it off as Schindler hit a 121 checkout to break back before the seventh seed eventually sealed the win in the 20th leg.

It will be a battle of two former world champions in round two as Price faces Rob Cross after the Englishman’s comprehensive 10-3 win over 10th seed Danny Noppert of the Netherlands.

A number of Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City office items are being auctioned off by the club.

Among the of items up for grabs are the very coffee cups Guardiola used, offering fans a direct connection to his time at the club.

The auction features a wide array of memorabilia from Guardiola’s office, including his chair, desk lamp, and whistle, alongside several framed pictures.

Some of his training tops are also available, as is his winter jacket and collection of incense sticks, complete with matches.

For those interested in the tactical mind behind City’s success, a set of two pitch pads with Guardiola’s handwritten strategies, accompanied by his pens, is also up for grabs.

While these personal effects are drawing significant interest, early bidding indicates that the most coveted item is a rare commemorative ball marking Erling Haaland’s achievement of 100 Premier League goals.

Only three such balls were ever produced, and bidding has already soared into four figures for the item, which is presented in a display box.

The auction is set to conclude at the end of the week, with some of the proceeds understood to be benefiting the club’s charity, City in the Community.

Guardiola left City this summer after a decade in which he won six Premier League titles, the Champions League, three FA Cups, and five League Cups.

The 55-year-old has now been linked with the vacant position of Italy boss.

The Azzurri missed out on a third successive World Cup in March after play-off final heartbreak at the hands of Bosnia and Herzegovina, leading to the departure of Gennaro Gattuso.

Italy icon Paolo Maldini, who has been newly appointed the technical director of the FIGC, travelled to Barcelona alongside advisor Leonardo to speak with the Catalan, who left City after 10 glory-laden years at the end of last season.

A four-year plan was outlined to Guardiola who is prioritising project over salary when deciding his next step.

It remains to be seen whether Guardiola is keen to take the job but the FIGC is making serious efforts to convince him, with Maldini and Leonardo speaking to Guardiola over three days.

Akwa United’s Somto Nnoli Named in Flying Eagles Squad for WAFU B U20 Championship

Published

on

Akwa United defender Somto Nnoli has been named in Nigeria’s Flying Eagles squad for the 2026 WAFU B U20 Championship.

The tournament will be held in Yamoussoukro, Côte d’Ivoire, from July 26 to August 9 and will also serve as the qualifying competition for the next Africa U20 Cup of Nations.

Nnoli earned his place in the team after an impressive season with Akwa United in the Nigeria National League (NNL). The defender featured in about 90 per cent of the club’s league matches and was one of the team’s most consistent players.

Eight conferences form alliance to improve ‘quality, consistency’ of officiating in women’s college basketball

Published

on

Eight Division I conferences are trying to improve the experience in women’s college basketball with an official alliance that aims to “enhance the quality, consistency and development of officiating,” the leagues announced on Monday. The conferences involved are the ACC, American Conference, BIG EAST, Atlantic 10, Big South Conference, Coastal Athletic Association, Ivy League and Metro Conference (formerly Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference).

This group will be led by Pualani Spurlock-Welsh, who has been a full-time official for multiple conferences since 2011 and last month was named supervisor of officials for the ACC, Big East and American Conference.

“When you look at the consortium that was put together, it’s an investment in women’s basketball and an investment in women’s basketball officiating,” ACC Commissioner Jim Phillips told USA Today.

“You have to continue to groom young officials and new officials to the game in different ways. And one way to do it is through the conferences. I’m excited about it. It’s a strategic, dedicated group looking to make sure that they’re delivering the very best quality of a women’s basketball officiating.”

What will the alliance do?

This effort aims to improve officiating “through a collaborative system of assigning, training, evaluation and oversight.” These are the official services that will be provided for the member conferences:

  • Identify, recruit and retain officials
  • Enhance official training, education, mentorship, evaluation and feedback
  • Develop efficient, collaborative assigning strategies that maximize geographic efficiencies across the alliance
  • Conduct collaborative seasonal game management calls and provide updates related to alliance operations

Having a clearer pipeline for officials will be an important part of these efforts. Those who are less experienced will start out in smaller conferences and, with the proper training and development, can work their way up to bigger games in leagues like the ACC.

“You need a system that’s got some tiers to it, so that you have a chance to move up as you get experience and become more familiar with women’s basketball,” Phillips told USA Today. “It’s a training mechanism for women’s college basketball overall. The commissioners will obviously have some oversight to it.”

Is this a new concept?

Not exactly, but it is a more official effort now. These eight conferences had already been working together under the leadership of Debbie Williamson, who served as a conference coordinator of officials since 2014 but retired earlier this year.

Williamson oversaw the eight conferences directly, but Spurlock-Welsh will delegate more of her work. While she will still be the supervisor for the ACC, Big East and American, the other five conferences will have representatives who report to her.

Officiating has been a hot topic

Officiating, always an easy target for critics, has been more of a discussion recently. In women’s college basketball, UConn coach Geno Auriemma just called out the lack of calls from referees in the 2026 national championship game against South Carolina.

“They’ve been beating the shit out of our guys down there the entire game,” he said in April. “I’m not making excuses, ’cause we haven’t been able to make a shot. But this is ridiculous.”

It is fair to point out that was a frustrating day for Auriemma, who also exchanged words with South Carolina coach Dawn Staley after the Huskies lost the game. However, this is not a recent issue. In 2023, for example, the NCAA conceded that officiating in the LSU vs. Iowa national championship game “did not meet expectations,” citing that the percentage of correct calls was lower than usual.

The WNBA has also had similar issues with officiating. During the 2025 playoffs, Minnesota Lynx head coach Cheryl Reeve blasted refs after a controversial no-call that led to an injury for star Napheesa Collier. Ahead of the 2026 season, league commissioner Cathy Engelbert announced a specialized task force to address concerns about officiating consistency and the game’s physicality.

“We’ve seen great improvements on the very things that were broken,” said Reeve, who is part of the task force. “There was a level of impeding players and trying to cut off a screen. We don’t want the unnecessary physicality.”

The league is still trying to figure out the balance. Just last month, Phoenix Mercury forward Alyssa Thomas was suspended for putting her fist into Fever star Caitlin Clark’s neck while scrambling for a loose ball. A foul was not called during the game, but she was later given a flagrant foul 2 penalty.

MLB home run picks, odds: Fernando Tatis Jr. among expert’s bets for Monday, July 20

Published

on

Monday, July 20 features a full 15-game slate in MLB, so fans who want to wager on the best bet to a hit a home run today have hundreds of choices on MLB player props. Home run props are massively popular in MLB betting, and with potential playoff previews Monday like Dodgers vs. Phillies and White Sox vs. Rangers, there are tons of players to look at when you’re deciding on your home run props wagers. SportsLine MLB expert Angelo Magliocca is here to help, and the expert has pored over all of Monday’s odds to find his best bets to hit (at least) one out of the yard.

Bet on MLB home run props Monday with the DraftKings promo code, where new users can get $150 in bonus bets, paid within 14 days, after spending $5+:

Magliocca, also known as “Amags,” is a hugely profitable MLB handicapper who uses his deep knowledge of baseball to find value on player props, sides and totals. He is coming off another strong season at SportsLine. Over the 2022, 2023, 2024 and 2025 MLB seasons, Amags is up 133.4 units on straight bets and parlays while winning an additional 25.3 units on ladder plays.

Best home run picks for Monday

Curtis Mead (+360)

Kyle Freeland has allowed 16 home runs to right-handed batters in 65 innings this year. He has allowed 17 walks to righties in that same time frame. He’s been barreled up 12% of the time and hit hard at nearly a 60% clip by right-handers, and that plays perfectly into Curtis Mead’s hands.

The Nationals slugger has crushed left-handed pitchers, with seven of his 17 home runs this season coming against southpaws in just over 100 at-bats, giving him a .521 slugging percentage. He has feasted on fastballs, and Freeland leads with his four-seam fastball against righties, while throwing the cutter more than 20% of the time. That’s almost half the time that a right-handed hitter is seeing a fastball or a variation. Neither pitch has been effective, yielding a .401 and .350 expected wOBA, respectively.

The expected stats for Freeland’s pitch mix against righties is horrendous, and his only chance of getting Mead out here is leaning into the breaking stuff. We get 100-degree weather and the highest altitude of any ballpark, plus a good platoon advantage and a +360 price. Mead will be hitting near the top of the order on the away team. This is set it and forget it territory, in my opinion.

Bet on Mead to hit a home run Monday with the latest FanDuel promo code and get up to $1,000 in bet reset tokens when betting $5 over five days:

Fernando Tatis Jr. (+450) and Manny Machado (+450)

Is Tatis finally back? He has hit a home run in back-to-back games, and it looks like he could have his power stroke back. Now in Atlanta as the away team and with a spot near or at the top of the order, Tatis should have plenty of chances to go deep tonight.

For right-handed batters, this ballpark actually plays rather neutral or even slightly depressing to power numbers. I don’t care, as Bryce Elder allowed three homers in his last start and seven across 26 innings in June. He’s been beaten up by righties, who are hitting nearly .300 against him, and six of his 15 home runs allowed have come against righties in just 34 innings of work. We still get temperatures in the 80’s here, with humidity rising as the game goes on, putting Tatis in a good situation to defy some of his season-long numbers and get a homer off a right-hander here. If for some reason he faces a lefty out of the bullpen, that would be huge as well since he’s been far better for power off lefties this year.

On the other side of that coin is Machado, who’s racked up 15 of his 19 home runs against right-handed pitching this year. He had three home runs in the 11 games in July before the break but hasn’t hit one yet since returning. I like him to find the power stroke again here, against a pitcher he has hit hard in a small sample size but hasn’t had much to show for it.

Sign up to wager on Monday home run props at BetMGM using the promo code CBSSPORTS and get up to $1,500 in bonus bets:

Esmerlyn Valdez (+310)

Valdez has 12 home runs in 105 at-bats so far this year in MLB action; I almost thought I was reading those numbers incorrectly at first. His stats are eye-popping, and half of his home runs have come against left-handed pitcher. He has an OPS above 1.500 and a slugging percentage over 1.000 against them, though neither of those figures will stay that high. Still, he’s crushing lefties right now, and pretty much anyone for that matter. He has racked up 10 total bases in the three games since returning from the All-Star break, with two home runs in there.

He strikes out a ton as well but far less against lefties, and Ryan Weathers has been weirdly worse against left-handed batters. I still like this spot for Valdez with how hot he’s been lately. We get hot weather in a good hitters ballpark, and a batter on the away team who should be in the tophalf of the batting order, all of which play to our advantage.

Additionally, the Yankees bullpen was worked a ton Sunday, so they are likely to be missing at least a couple of their normal high-leverage guys, along with closer David Bednar.

Chris Waller’s colts Beiwacht and Angel Capital trial ahead of 2026 Spring

Dual Group One winner Beiwacht was among the key participants in the opening trial at Warwick Farm on Tuesday, looking sharp as he won the 900m heat.

The Godolphin-owned son of Bivouac stepped up from three-year-old to open-age company in the Autumn, adding the All Aged Stakes to his earlier Golden Rose Stakes victory.

Ridden by Nash Rawiller, Beiwacht led throughout the trial, clocking a time of 53.99 seconds, with Spring Champion Stakes winner Attica in second.

Chris Waller, who acquired Beiwacht after James Cummings’ move to Hong Kong, expressed his excitement for the colt’s prospects as a four-year-old heading into the Spring.

“I’m looking forward to him,” Waller told Racing And Sports. “He’s a mature colt now. He’s won a Golden Rose and we’ve worked out that he’s a good high-pressure horse over 1400 (metres).”

“He’s good enough to win over 1200, I’m sure, and as a mature four-year-old, I’m excited. He’s beaten the older horses at three. He’s won a Golden Rose in amazing time and with an amazing rating. He can really do it as a four-year-old.”

While Beiwacht has achieved Group One success and is a valuable stallion prospect, the Waller stable is keen to secure a top-flight win with the much-discussed Angel Capital, who finished strongly for fifth in the trial under James McDonald.

Angel Capital has placed at Group One level three times and had a luckless sixth in the All Aged Stakes, won by stablemate Beiwacht.

“This is his time,” Waller said of the Yulong-owned four-year-old. “I think 1400 metres is foolproof in terms of taking the way he races out of the equation where he gets back and he can still beat them over 1400. He’ll probably resume him over 1200, but I haven’t given up on thinking about he could even go first-up in a Memsie. The next few weeks will tell us a lot about our horses and where they’re resuming.”

Champagne Stakes winner Fireball and ATC Sires Produce winner Campione D’italia also competed in the trial, finishing seventh and sixth respectively, and are likely targets for the Golden Rose.

A Kevin O’Connell Quote on J.J. McCarthy Before the QB1 Job Gets Decided

Soon enough, Kevin O’Connell will make the most important decision he has made as the Vikings’ head coach. Choosing the correct quarterback — J.J. McCarthy or Kyler Murray — will be the most significant decision he can make for 2026. Quite possibly, O’Connell’s job beyond the current season will hinge on the decision.

So, a lot of pressure rests on the passer battle.

Many are proceeding through the remaining weeks of the offseason with the assumption that Kyler Murray is going to win the QB1 job. Quite possibly, that assumption proves to be exactly right. Murray is a wonderfully talented passer and is in a great setup to shine. Still, though, there’s plenty to be said for what McCarthy is capable of accomplishing as a 23-year-old passer who is entering his third pro season. In fact, O’Connell spoke to the next phase in McCarthy’s development several months ago.

Kevin O’Connell on What’s in Front of J.J. McCarthy

My hot take: most of J.J. McCarthy’s struggles in 2025 come down to poor coaching from Kevin O’Connell. Tasking the kid with adjusting his mechanics behind a patchwork offensive line while refusing to run the football was insanity.

At Michigan, Mr. McCarthy played well largely due to a dominant defense and ground game. Brian Flores brought the excellent defense to the party. O’Connell, though, didn’t stick with the ground game. Stunningly, he explained earlier in the offseason that Minnesota only adjusted toward emphasizing the rushing attack, minimizing turnovers, and playing sizzling defense in the final five games of the season. Maybe that was just meaningless coach talk; maybe that was nevertheless a very dumb thing to say.

Something that wasn’t dumb was how O’Connell discussed where things are heading at quarterback.

The Vikings’ skipper chatted with Paul Allen and Pete Bercich for roughly twenty minutes at the NFL combine. “We want him to be in a competitive situation,” O’Connell explained back in late February. O’Connell continued: “We’ve really got to push the gas pedal down. And not replace development and coaching and teaching with anything, but really enhance it with a really competitive situation.”

In essence, let McCarthy feel the urgency of direct competition.

O’Connell’s view was that adding a viable starting quarterback wasn’t about replacing J.J. McCarthy. Rather, the goal is to enhance the competition for J.J. McCarthy by inserting somebody capable of replacing him. Can the kid elevate to such a degree that he doesn’t get leapfrogged for the QB1 spot? If so, then he’ll be better; if not, the team will still have a competent option to start.

Last year, the Vikings proved remarkably stupid when not introducing actual competition for McCarthy. All along, Sam Howell, Brett Rypien, and Max Brosmer were depth options. At no point did any challenge for the QB1 job. Minnesota isn’t making the mistake again.

Kevin O’Connell has not committed to giving the starting job to Murray. Instead, there’s a true competition taking place. This, too, is seen as part of the process of seeing J.J. McCarthy develop. The Vikings are therefore introducing a challenge rather than signalling a desire to abandon the No. 10 pick.

What’s inside of the kid once he gets backed into a corner? The Vikings want to see a fighter who shows the absolute best version of himself.

Whether the strategy proves fruitful — which is to say nothing of actually committing to running the ball, minimizing turnovers, and playing excellent defense — remains to be seen. Clarity will arrive in short order as the competition gets rolling next week.
