EXCLUSIVE: Scott McTominay was told too much friction exists to ever make a move to one of Manchester United’s biggest rivals
Scott McTominay has been told that Manchester United must be the only club he plays for should he decide to return to the Premier League.
The 28-year-old left Old Trafford in 2024 after 22 years to join Napoli in a £25million deal and has gone from strength to strength since the transfer. McTominay won the Serie A title last year and with that came individual recognition as he won the Serie A MVP and the Serie A Footballer of the Year.
He also earned the first Ballon d’Or nomination of his career with his exploits in Naples making him a fan favourite in the city. Since leaving Manchester, he’s opened up about his love for the club he grew up supporting but has found a home in Italy.
While a return to his former side looks unlikely for the foreseeable future, United remains the only club in England he should play for, according to club legend Teddy Sheringham.
Speaking exclusively to Manchester Evening News, via Mr Q, the ex-striker said it would be a “travesty” if United allowed him to play for another Premier League club. He said: “If he comes back to England, then there’s no way Manchester United can miss out on him.

“He simply cannot come back to the Premier League without going to Manchester United. That would be a travesty. That cannot happen.”
When asked whether a future transfer to Liverpool could ever come to fruition given McTominay’s ties to United, a perplexed Sheringham said such a move is unlikely to happen.
He explained: “McTominay and Liverpool? Really?I don’t think that can happen. There’s too much friction between Manchester United and Liverpool for him to even consider going there. If he’s coming back to the Premier League, he has to go to Old Trafford, certainly from Manchester United’s point of view.”
Sheringham – who won the Treble with United in the 1998/99 season – was one of the main critics of McTominay’s sale to Napoli, insisting his former side could profit from someone like the midfielder’s abilities currently.
He continued: “I’m devastated to see him performing so well somewhere else. They could do with Scott McTominay at Manchester United right this minute. When he left, I wasn’t happy.
“He’s one of those players who digs in when things aren’t going quite so well and makes things happen. I think that’s exactly what you need when you’re struggling. So when he left, I really wasn’t happy, and then to see him doing so well just makes it even more of a bad move on Manchester United’s part.
“But I’m delighted for him on a personal level that he’s doing so well in Italy.” Despite United’s deficiencies in the middle of the park, it didn’t stop them from pulling off a stunning 3-2 away win against Arsenal on Sunday to move up to fourth in the table.
