Shubman Gill, Shreyas Iyer likely to attend BCCI meeting to review India’s dismal UK tour

MUMBAI: The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has called a review meeting with head coach Gautam Gambhir, chief selector Ajit Agarkar and Centre of Excellence (CoE) head VVS Laxman at its Mumbai headquarters on Thursday to assess India’s recent performances and discuss the team’s roadmap going forward. There is also a possibility that India’s T20 captain Shreyas Iyer and ODI and Test captain Shubman Gill will attend the meeting. The review was originally planned after India’s defeats in Ireland and England, but was postponed because of the team’s two-Test tour of Sri Lanka.BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia will attend the meeting along with BCCI president Mithun Manhas.

England, Ireland, Zimbabwe and Sri Lanka tours under review

The reigning T20 World Cup champions lost the two-match T20I series in Ireland 2-0 in June. The poor run continued in England, where India lost the five-match T20I series 4-0. The 125-run defeat in Nottingham was the team’s biggest loss of the series. Under Shubman Gill’s captaincy, India also lost the ODI series in England 2-1.A source said the review will not be limited to those tours.“Not just the tours of the UK, the tours of Zimbabwe and Sri Lanka will be reviewed as well,” a source said. The meeting is also expected to focus on player injury management ahead of India’s upcoming Test assignments.India will travel to New Zealand in November for a two-Test series, and the BCCI wants to review the growing number of injury concerns in the squad. After the third ODI against England at Lord’s, Gill had expressed frustration over frequent injuries affecting the team during overseas tours.Jasprit Bumrah missed the Sri Lanka tour after aggravating his left knee injury.Even for India’s T20I series against Afghanistan, announced on Tuesday, the availability of four players is still uncertain. Bumrah, Washington Sundar, Nitish Reddy and Harshit Rana are scheduled to undergo fitness tests at the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru on September 9.

Top-seeded Alexander Zverev rallies to avoid first-round exit at US Open

Published

on

NEW YORK — Alexander Zverev rallied just in time to avoid becoming the first men’s No. 1 seed to lose in the first round of a Grand Slam tournament since 2003, edging Lorenzo Sonego 6-4, 3-6, 6-7 (7), 7-5, 6-4 in a match that ended Wednesday morning.

Zverev won his first major title at the French Open, lost to top-ranked Jannik Sinner in the Wimbledon final, then became the No. 1 seed in a major for the first time when Sinner had to withdraw with a right knee injury.

He couldn’t cash in on repeated chances to break Sonego’s serve for much of the night and was in danger of becoming the first top-seeded man to fall in his first match in a major since Ivo Karlovic beat Lleyton Hewitt at Wimbledon in 2003.

It hasn’t happened at the U.S. Open since Stefan Edberg lost to Alexander Volkov in 1990. Zverev finally broke through against Sonego’s serve late to pull out the match in 4 hours, 52 minutes.

Zverev is 7-0 against Sonego, an Italian who came in 1-9 against top-10 men in Grand Slams. But Sonego’s speed around the court allowed him to track down balls that on other nights would have been winners, and he came up with enough clutch serves to make Zverev just 5 for 22 on break points for the match.

3 Positions that Look Weakest after Vikings Announce 53-Man Roster

The Minnesota Vikings announced their 53-man roster on Sunday with the usual mix of surprise inclusions and exclusions. After the dust has settled here are the three positions that look weakest on the Vikings’ initial depth chart.

3 Positions that Look Weakest after Vikings Announce 53-Man Roster

The makeup of the offense is certainly eye-raising, with the team beginning with four quarterbacks and going heavy on wide receivers and tight ends. It left the offensive line looking sparse, at least to begin. On the other side of the ball, it’s the edge where Minnesota looks short. Here are the three positions that look weakest as the Vikings roster currently stands.

Center

I’m unsure about the decision to go forward with Blake Brandel as the starting center. Brandel has done a decent job covering every position across the offensive line since he was drafted by the Vikings back in 2020. However, he has very little experience at center, and it feels like a big risk. To compound the issue, backup center Michael Jurgens will start the season on the Injured Reserve, meaning he will miss at least the first four games.

Minnesota also chose to waive seventh-round rookie Gavin Gerhardt. They moved to pick up Nick Samac on waivers, a former seventh-round pick who spent time in Baltimore before spending a year in Carolina. He has only seen the field on special teams. A veteran at the position who can be a competent backup was my wish, but the Vikings seem to see things differently. It could be a mistake.

Guard

The lack of depth extends to guard. Behind the starters Donovan Jackson and Will Fries, there is only Joe Huber alongside newcomer Trevor Keegan (and possibly Samac, who is listed at center).

Huber was picked up as an undrafted rookie last year and did well enough to make the roster and play in 12 games, including one start, while the Vikings went through an injury crisis in 2025. Huber will need to show serious development if he gets on the field this year, as his rookie season was a struggle.

Given the injury problems Minnesota had last season, it was surprising to see the team begin so light on the OL. The new adds may need to do some heavy lifting before long.

Outside Linebacker

Minnesota’s depth at outside linebacker was already looking flimsy before a torn ACL ended Tyler Batty’s season. It’s a shame for Batty, another undrafted player (from 2025) who had worked his way to almost certainly being on the roster. His injury now makes the need for the Vikings to add another OLB seem like a necessity.

Whether it’s looking at who’s left on the free-agent market or trying to fire up a trade, new Vikings GM Nolan Teasley needs to make his first big addition. There are high hopes for Dallas Turner this season and we know what Andrew Van Ginkel can do but behind them there is just Chaz Chambliss and Bo Richter. Not enough.

A popular AEW star sent out a message after being part of the All In 2026 pay-per-view.

The aforementioned star is one-half of Los Titanes del Aire, Komander. He recently competed in the Men’s Casino Gauntlet at All In 2026, entering the match as the eighth participant, but did not win. In a video posted on his X, Komander is seen at Wembley Stadium before the event. In the caption, he thanked All Elite Wrestling President and CEO Tony Khan for believing in him and giving him opportunities. You can check out the video below:

Komander has been involved in professional wrestling since the early 2010s, and he began his tenure in the Mexican independent circuit. In 2023, he made his debut in the Jacksonville-based promotion and also competed in their sister promotion, Ring of Honor. At the same time, the luchador also competed in matches for All Elite Wrestling’s partner company, CMLL.

As the 27-year-old star continues to put up spectacular performances with his lucha-style, his road is getting interesting in Tony Khan’s company.

Tony Khan on signing WWE legends who debuted at AEW All In 2026

At All In 2026, wrestling fans saw the debut of former WWE superstars Kofi and Austin Creed, now known as The New Level, and later learned they had been officially signed by the company. During the post-event media scrum, Tony Khan said he was excited to have two hard-working stars who wanted to be on television each week, which would bring more fans and attention to his company.

“Something that got me excited about New Level, these guys are not afraid to work very hard. They told me, ‘Hey, we see Jon Moxley at AEW Dynamite and Collision basically every week. We want to be at AEW Dynamite and Collision basically every week. We want to work really hard for the company. We’re going to be there practically every week.’ That’s really exciting to have people coming in like that. That’s only gonna bring more fans and attention.”

With All Elite Wrestling capping off a highly successful All In event, it remains to be seen what is next for the company.
