OXFORD, Mississippi — For one night at least, the football gods believed karma was real.

After 10 months of drama and hurt feelings, Ole Miss won the breakup on Saturday night.

There was an unprecedented level of buildup to Lane Kiffin’s return to Oxford for the first time since leaving the program for LSU. On a blisteringly hot day, it was all anyone could talk about in the school’s famous Grove tailgating scene. Everywhere you looked, there were signs and pins with funny, sometimes crude, messages about the man they once worshipped, only to become their biggest villain. 

It wasn’t simply that he left, but how he left. Kiffin left a College Football Playoff-bound Ole Miss team because, ultimately, he didn’t believe he could win a national championship in Oxford. Ole Miss fans couldn’t believe he’d ditch a playoff team; Kiffin couldn’t believe the school wouldn’t let him keep coaching the team after taking the LSU job. It left both sides feeling aggrieved, even if Kiffin was the one who departed. Those feelings only intensified as Kiffin tried to strip his former program for parts as it was preparing for a national semifinal game against Miami. 

The greener pastures of LSU, a place that Nick Saban, Les Miles and Ed Orgeron all hoisted national titles at, proved too irresistible for Kiffin. It was the kind of job he didn’t know if he’d ever get another shot at after he was fired from USC. There was something about coaching a blue-blood program that was just different for him. Lane couldn’t see Ole Miss for what he was helping it become; he could only fixate on what it had been. 

On Saturday night, with a record crowd inside Vaught-Hemingway Stadium, Lane’s former program was the better team. The star power of Ole Miss quarterback Trinidad Chambliss overwhelmed all the advantages that lured Lane away from Oxford, including what some believe is the most expensive roster in college football. Chambliss finished with 363 passing yards, three passing touchdowns and one rushing touchdown. He looked like the best player on any field Saturday night, the rare special player whose performance always seems to improve when it mattered most.

“The whole nation kind of disrespects Ole Miss,” Chambliss said. “When they compare LSU and Ole Miss, they always say LSU has more money and nicer facilities, a bigger fan base and bigger stadium. So, there’s more to it than just Kiffin being on the other side of the ball.”

Chambliss couldn’t hide the fact that this one meant more. After each of his three passing touchdowns, the Ole Miss quarterback looked over at his former coach. It wasn’t anything intentional, he says, just the emotions of it all taking over. Kiffin had wanted to take Chambliss with him to Baton Rouge, even soliciting a lawyer’s help in his fight for another year of eligibility, and spoke glowingly of him after the game. Kiffin said Chambliss was the hardest player in the nation to defend, a strong statement that gained key resume points on Saturday night. 

After the game, in a cramped visiting team press conference room, Kiffin spoke quietly in almost hushed tones. The emotions of the return impacted him more than he expected. It was an interesting week for Kiffin, who had been texting with more than a few people associated with the Ole Miss program in the lead-up to Saturday night. It’s all part of the Kiffin experience, quirky behavior that seems fun when the results are great and gets questioned as unnecessary distraction when they aren’t. For the first half especially, Kiffin looked low energy and out of rhythm as Ole Miss built a 24-7 halftime lead. The moment seemed to overwhelm him. 

He had been through a situation like this before — twice, really, at Tennessee in his returns as an assistant and then head coach — and perhaps thought he could better handle it. It’s never easy, however, to walk into a stadium full of 70,000 fans chanting “F— Lane Kiffin” over and over again. As much as his line “I needed Oxford more than Oxford needed me” has been derided as a facade since he left, it was still a life-changing six years for him. It’s where he got sober, where he reconnected with family and where he proved he could still be a great football coach. 

“There’s a lot of stuff six years here…a lot of life-changing experiences and a lot of really good people (who) helped me through some really hard times,” Kiffin said. “I just thought I would probably be more in competitive mode and just kind of embrace it. I don’t know, sometimes you can’t predict your emotions.

“I know that sometimes I don’t act like it, but I’m a human too, you know.”

Of course, Lane being Lane meant he still had a little jab for his former program when he was asked about the raucous crowd Saturday night. “The stadium was full an hour early,” he said. “I guess I had to leave to get them to do that. So you’re welcome.” For as magnanimous as he was trying to be in defeat, he still couldn’t help himself. 

Ole Miss gave him a taste of his own medicine. 

After Ole Miss defensive back Jaylon Braxton intercepted Sam Leavitt on 4th-and-goal to end LSU’s furious rally efforts, Braxton ran right past Kiffin with his pointer finger aimed at the former Ole Miss coach to let him know. 

When it was all over, they played LSU staples “Callin’ Baton Rouge” over the PA system, and the Ole Miss band played “Neck.” And, yes, the Ole Miss student section excitedly sang those special lyrics. 

Ole Miss once embraced the trolling and pestering that Kiffin made an art form on social media and elsewhere. How could it resist a little trolling as a forlorn Lane walked off, surrounded by Louisiana state troopers?

Now that the spectacle of Kiffin’s return was over, each side could, hopefully, focus on the future and not each other. All around town in the days preceding the game, as more and more visitors arrived to pack the college town, there was a frequent refrain, “I can’t wait for Sunday.” There was intense anticipation for the game, one that could go down as one of the greatest revenge wins for a program ever, but also the sweet relief of moving past the topic that has hung around the program like an albatross from the minute Kiffin left. 

Ole Miss just vanquished its enemy, is 3-0 and has as good an argument as any team to be the No. 1 team in the country now. But the Rebels are only a quarter of the way through the regular season with a surging Florida team up next. If this season were only about beating Lane Kiffin, disappointment awaits around the corner. 

“It wasn’t our Super Bowl, and we didn’t make it out to be our Super Bowl,” Ole Miss head coach Pete Golding said. He couldn’t deny how sweet the win was, though. 

Golding, the greatest beneficiary of Lane’s decision to leave, is now 5-1 as a head coach. Four of those wins have come against top 25 opponents, and two of them (Georgia, LSU) were ranked in the top 10. It’s very early in Golding’s tenure, obviously, but he may possess the big-game coaching gene that Kiffin has struggled with throughout his career. After Saturday, Kiffin is now 13-25 against top 25 teams and has only a 1-6 record against top 25 opponents when his team is ranked in the top 10. As Ole Miss fan Patrick Dockery emphatically told me in The Grove before the game started, “He can’t win the big one. He’s a perennial choke artist.”

Lane Kiffin elevated the Ole Miss program to heights it hadn’t reached in years, capitalizing on the NIL and transfer portal eras to win 55 games over six seasons and become one of the country’s top programs. And then, program insiders claim, he tried to burn it down on the way out as he raged against the indignity of not being allowed to coach the team he built in the playoff. It’s why there was far more anger than gratitude for Kiffin in Oxford, a sentiment on emphatic display in every way inside Vaught-Hemingway Stadium. 

On Saturday night, Ole Miss football’s foundation looked as strong as ever. And as elated Ole Miss fans stood and danced to “Callin Baton Rouge,” no one seemed to miss the former coach. 

Elsewhere in Ligue 1, Lyon handed Rennes a heavy 4-0 defeat on Saturday, while Paris FC edged Strasbourg 2-1.

In England, reigning champions Arsenal suffered their first defeat of the season, going down 3-0 at Brighton. Tottenham, meanwhile, remain in trouble as the Spurs suffered another setback, losing 3-2 to Aston Villa.

In Spain, it’s seven out of seven for Barcelona. The Catalans came from behind to beat Sevilla 3-1 and maintain their perfect start to the La Liga season. On Sunday, Real Madrid face a major test against city rivals Atletico Madrid.

In Italy, Manu Koné and Lautaro Martinez both starred in the Serie A clash between Roma and Inter. The pair scored twice each in a thrilling 2-2 draw.

And finally, France are out of the Davis Cup. Les Bleus were beaten 3-1 by Canada, inspired by Félix Auger-Aliassime.

Great Britain wrapped up a straightforward victory over Ecuador to book their place at the Davis Cup Finals in November.

After singles victories for Arthur Fery and Toby Samuel on Saturday at London’s Copper Box, Henry Patten and Neal Skupski clinched the tie at the earliest opportunity with a 6-3 6-4 win against Gonzalo Escobar and Diego Hidalgo in the doubles rubber.

Britain therefore join three-time defending champions Italy, Canada, Czechia, South Korea and Austria in booking their spot for the eight-team event in Bologna.

It is the first time Leon Smith’s side have reached the quarter-finals since 2023, when they were beaten by Novak Djokovic’s Serbia in Malaga.

Whoever they draw – and as a non-seed they could find themselves up against the likes of Italy or Spain – they will face a much stiffer test than that provided by Ecuador.

The South American outsiders gave their all to the task in the hope of repeating their famous victory in the competition at Wimbledon in 2000 but were outclassed by Smith’s men.

Britain are the leading nation in men’s doubles and it would have been a huge upset had world No 1 Patten and new US Open champion Skupski not prevailed.

They had played together only once before – Patten’s sole previous appearance – in a tie against Canada two years ago but gelled quickly, breaking serve at the first opportunity.

There was a moment of contention on the first point of the second set when umpire Marijana Veljovic ruled that Escobar had hit a volley while leaning across the net, awarding Britain the point.

The Ecuador duo put their anger aside to hold serve but a return winner from Skupski earned them another break in the ninth game, and Patten served out the victory.

“We’re very, very happy to get it done in the first match,” said Patten. “I think we played a good one.”

Despite wrongly predicting that he would lose to Conor Benn, Terence Crawford has named another fighter who he believes has the beating of Ryan Garcia.

The American made a successful first defence of his WBC title last weekend, dispatching Benn in two rounds after flooring his man with a crushing right hand.

While he was made a sizable pre-fight favourite, many were wondering which version of Garcia, who has been known to blow hot and cold, would turn up at Las Vegas’ T-Mobile Arena.

He did, for instance, produce a lacklustre performance after returning from a year-long doping ban and losing on points to Rolando Romero in May 2025.

Given his world title triumph over Mario Barrios in February, though, there was equally a possibility that Garcia would prove to be levels above Benn.

As it happened, the 28-year-old did exactly that and has now positioned himself as one of the top operators at 147lbs, along with fellow champions Devin Haney and Teofimo Lopez.

In terms of his toughest challenge, however, former pound-for-pound king Crawford has named Shakur Stevenson as the next man to beat Garcia.

Taking to social media, ‘Bud’ responded to the Californian’s post that “Shakur is a real one” and warned him that, if they ever lock horns, he would be in for a truly punishing night at the office.

NEW DELHI: India opened their medal account at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games with two silver medals on Sunday, both coming in the women’s 10m air rifle competition, as Elavenil Valarivan emerged as the standout performer on a day that also brought assured medals, cricket and hockey victories and strong starts in badminton and table tennis.Valarivan first combined with Sonam Uttam Maskar and Games debutant Vidarsa Vinod to win silver in the women’s 10m air rifle team event before adding an individual silver later in the day.The 27-year-old’s individual medal was particularly significant after she had gone without a podium finish in her previous two Asian Games appearances. She shot 252.4 in the final to finish 0.6 points behind Japan’s Hinata Taichi, who claimed gold with an Asian Games record 253.0. South Korea’s Ban Hyojin won bronze with 230.4.For Valarivan, it was a day of both achievement and a near-miss. Suchika assures historic MMA medal

While shooting provided India’s first medals, Suchika Tariyal ensured another podium finish.The 36-year-old defeated Mongolia’s Altanchimeg Baigalmaa 2-0 in the women’s traditional 60kg MMA quarterfinal to enter the semifinals and assure India of at least a bronze medal.The result assumes added significance with MMA making its Asian Games debut at Aichi-Nagoya. India’s women cricketers moved another step closer to defending their Asian Games title with a commanding 114-run victory over Bangladesh in the semifinal.Shafali Verma was the star, smashing her maiden T20I century off just 49 balls as India posted 195/4 after opting to bat. A medal-winning start with more opportunities ahead

Arsenal are doing what serious clubs should be doing, tracking the next wave before the market turns noisy and expensive. According to TEAMtalk, the Gunners are among several sides monitoring Sturm Graz midfielder Luca Weinhandl, a 17-year-old Austrian who has already pushed himself into the wider European conversation.

This is not random hype. Weinhandl has been watched closely in recent fixtures, including matches against Rapid Wien and LASK, and the interest stretches beyond Arsenal. Brighton and Aston Villa are in the frame too, with clubs across Germany, Italy and France also aware of him. Once that kind of queue forms, the price usually moves quickly.

Luca Weinhandl Fits Arsenal Midfield Planning

The profile makes sense. Weinhandl is listed at 6ft3in, covers ground, plays box-to-box and has already shown enough composure to stand out in the Austrian Bundesliga and the Europa League. Arsenal under Mikel Arteta have been very deliberate about the kind of midfielder they want, players who can handle pressure, carry physical authority and still be clean in possession. On paper, he ticks obvious boxes.

The report states that Arsenal’s hierarchy see him as a long-term midfield solution rather than a short-term fix. That is important. At 17, this would be a recruitment play based on projection, development and asset growth, not instant first-team dependence. Those are usually the smarter deals, provided expectations stay realistic.

£20m Fee Reflects Growing Competition

A figure of around £20m has been mentioned, and that tells you where the market now sits for elite teenage talent. It sounds steep for a player still early in his senior career, but if multiple Premier League clubs are seriously involved, that number starts to look normal very quickly.

Weinhandl reportedly rejected a move in the summer in order to continue his development at Sturm Graz. That suggests patience and clarity, two qualities clubs like to see. Sturm Graz are also under no pressure to sell immediately, which means any January move would need the right structure and the right football argument.

January Window Could Be Decisive

Arsenal have a choice to make. Move early and accept the developmental nature of the signing, or wait and risk a broader auction by next summer. That is the calculation here. If Weinhandl keeps performing at his current level, the list of suitors will grow and the cost with it.

There is a reason clubs scout players like this aggressively. You either buy before certainty arrives, or you pay heavily once everyone agrees. Arsenal appear to understand that, and in Weinhandl they may see a midfielder whose value, and level, could rise fast.

Our View

From an Arsenal supporter’s perspective, this kind of report feels encouraging because it points to planning rather than panic. The midfield has quality, but the squad still needs fresh legs, size and long-term succession thinking. If Luca Weinhandl has the blend of athleticism, technical security and maturity being described, then £20m could look very sensible in a couple of years.

The key, though, is pathway. Arsenal cannot keep collecting talented young players without a credible route into meaningful minutes. If he arrives, there has to be a clear development plan, whether that means gradual cup appearances, training exposure with senior players, or a loan strategy that actually suits his game.

Supporters will also like the fact that he reportedly chose development over a move in the summer. That suggests a player thinking beyond the first big contract. Arsenal need more of that mentality, especially in younger signings.

There is always risk with teenage recruits, particularly when other clubs are circling and reputations start growing faster than careers. But this is exactly where smart recruitment can separate a very good side from one that stays strong for years. If Arsenal truly believe Weinhandl fits the long-term picture, then waiting around would make little sense. Get in early, coach him properly and trust the process.

Seven teams – Arizona, Baltimore, Cincinnati, Detroit, Las Vegas, Minnesota and the New York Jets – all won in Week 1 after missing the postseason in 2025.

Six teams – Baltimore, Buffalo, Carolina, Chicago, Cincinnati and Jacksonville – all scored at least 24 points in the first half of their games today, the most such teams in Week 1 in NFL history.

96 Points Scored

The Chicago Bears defeated the Carolina Panthers, 59-37, in Week 1 and the combined 96 points are the most points scored in a season-opening game in NFL history, surpassing the 88 points scored by Tampa Bay and New Orleans in Week 1 of the 2018 season.

Chicago quarterback Caleb Williams passed for 269 yards and two touchdowns, and rushed for 65 yards and two touchdowns in the Bears’ win over Carolina.

Henry Stars for Ravens

Baltimore running back Derrick Henry rushed for 144 yards and three touchdowns in the Ravens’ 41-23 win at Indianapolis.

Henry has 125 career rushing touchdowns, surpassing Pro Football Hall of Famer Marcus Allen (123 rushing touchdowns) for the third-most rushing touchdowns in NFL history.

Henry has 26 career games with at least 100 rushing yards and has eight career games with at least 100 rushing yards and three rushing touchdowns – the third-most such games in NFL history.

Wins for Lions & Bills

Detroit running back Jahmyr Gibbs recorded 186 scrimmage yards (156 rushing, 30 receiving) and two rushing touchdowns and wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown had 10 receptions for 67 yards and two touchdowns in the Lions’ 31-30 overtime win over New Orleans.

Buffalo quarterback Josh Allen passed for 334 yards and two touchdowns and had two rushing touchdowns in Buffalo’s 36-31 win over Houston.

Allen, who has 303 combined passing and rushing touchdowns (222 passing, 81 rushing) in 129 games, became the fastest quarterback in NFL history to reach 300 career combined passing and rushing touchdowns, surpassing Aaron Rodgers (134 games).

Jaguars & Vikings Open Season With Victories

Jacksonville quarterback Trevor Lawrence completed 18 of 23 pass attempts for 245 yards and four touchdowns with no interceptions in Jacksonville’s 34-10 win over Cleveland.

Minnesota wide receiver Justin Jefferson had eight receptions for 92 yards and two touchdowns in the Vikings’ 39-22 win over Green Bay.

Jefferson, who has 8,572 career receiving yards in 95 career games, became the third-fastest player in NFL history to reach 8,500 receiving yards.

Steelers & Cardinals On Top

Pittsburgh linebacker T.J. Watt recorded two sacks and returned an interception 35 yards for a touchdown in the Steelers’ 20-13 win over Atlanta.

Watt, who has 117 sacks and 10 interceptions in his career, joins Pro Football Hall of Famer Julius Peppers as the only players with at least 100 sacks and at least 10 interceptions since 1982, when the individual sack became an official statistic.

Arizona tight end Trey McBride recorded nine receptions for 95 yards and a touchdown in the Cardinals’ 26-14 win at the Los Angeles Chargers.

McBride has 38 career games with at least five receptions, tied with Pro Football Hall of Famers Antonio Gates (38 games) and Kellen Winslow Sr. (38) for the second-most such games by a tight end in his first five seasons in NFL history.

Other Week 1 Sunday Games

New York Jets rookie tight end Kenyon Sadiq recorded a rushing touchdown in his NFL debut in the team’s 23-10 victory at Tennessee.

Tampa Bay rookie linebacker Josiah Trotter had a sack and returned an interception 38 yards for a touchdown in his NFL debut against Cincinnati, becoming the first player since 1982, when the individual sack became an official statistic, to record a sack and an interception-return for a touchdown in his first career game.

Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert passed for 209 yards and a touchdown against Arizona.

Carrick needs to go back to basics to get a result here. That means going with Shaw at left-back if he is anywhere near ready to start, because the alternatives at left-back have really flopped.

I’d make a change in midfield as well. Youri Tielemans has started to struggle and the extra running power of Andrey Santos might be needed in a game where United have to turn up the physical edge.

It’s unclear whether Sesko is definitely unavailable for today’s game even though he wasn’t spotted travelling to London with his teammates, but if we work on the assumption he is out then Bryan Mbeumo is the best option to lead the line. The only issue with that is who fills in on the right with Amad out, but Lacey showed in midweek he is ready to make an impact from the off and should be given a chance.
