Letton-Jones, from Y Felinheli in Gwynedd, has albinism, a congenital condition that severely affects her sight, so she has to count her strokes to know when she is approaching the wall of the swimming pool.

That has not stopped Letton-Jones from following her dream to reach the 2028 Paralympics in Los Angeles.

After narrowly missing out on the Paris Games in 2024, the teenager was invited onto the Aquatics GB Para-swimming world-class programme.

Letton-Jones won silver in the women’s 100m backstroke S12 on her World Para-swimming championships debut in 2025.

Man Utd won 5-0 against Rosenborg in their second pre-season game thanks to a great finish from Shea Lacey.

Shea Lacey hardly raised a smile after firing Manchester United into the lead against Rosenborg.

If he were any more laid back, he would be horizontal. The youngster did not celebrate any of his goals in academy games last season, but his nonchalant celebration may be dropped if he scores at Old Trafford in the new campaign.

It’s increasingly likely that Lacey will be handed chances to score his first goal in front of United’s home support. It felt significant that he started against Rosenborg, and he grabbed the opportunity with both hands.

The youngster has already scored dozens of goals by cutting inside from the right and finishing with his left foot, so it felt inevitable that he would break the deadlock when he popped up in that scenario in the first half.

Lacey has more to his game than just quality in the final third though. It was interesting to spot United analyst Kaita Hasegawa nodding along as he tracked back to help Bryan Mbeumo win a turnover.

Lacey does not lack confidence, either. During the warm-up, he found the bottom corner with a first-time finish and walked off to juggle the ball to the halfway line. He made it look easy.

It’s understood the 19-year-old was backed by academy coaches ahead of pre-season to have a breakthrough 2026/2027, and he will vindicate that faith if he continues to perform well in friendlies over the coming weeks.

Lacey sent United on their way to a comfortable victory against Rosenborg in a much-improved performance after defeat to Wrexham last weekend.

Wrexham had a fitness edge over United in Helsinki. Rosenborg’s players were in even better condition given they are in the middle of their domestic season, though they fielded a weakened side against the Reds.

The Norwegians are struggling in the Eliteserien this term, and agreeing to a mid-season friendly against United was seen by their fans as an unwelcome distraction. The game also meant their next league fixture had to be rescheduled to Monday.

That is why the 21,000-capacity Lerkendal Stadion was half-empty. The reaction to the fixture locally in the middle of a disappointing campaign, combined with a lack of star names on show due to the World Cup, meant the attendance was much lower than when United played in a sold-out stadium in Trondheim two years ago.

The attendances over the last week suggest United have reached their saturation point in Scandinavia. There is huge support for United here, but perhaps four friendlies in this region in one summer have stretched it.

The positive was that United managed to give the local supporters who made the effort to attend something to cheer about. The Wrexham game was a snooze fest, but the Rosenborg clash turned out to be a goal fest.

Joshua Zirkzee danced around a Rosenborg defender and the goalkeeper to make it 2-0. The Dutchman had dropped into deep positions throughout but found the net when making a rare advanced run.

Zirkzee started down the middle again and Lacey played as the No.10. The Liverpool-born teenager has been compared to Phil Foden over the last few years and he now looks ready to be platformed like Foden was by Pep Guardiola.

Carrick did not make wholesale changes at half-time, opting to bring on only Harry Amass and Jaydan Kamason, but the make-up of the side was eventually changed on the hour mark.

The youngsters got in on the action, with Amass, Jacob Devaney and Ethan Williams all scoring. Kamason did all he could to impress Carrick in the second half by recording two assists with accurate crosses.

The conversation in the build-up to the game was all about whether JJ Gabriel would get onto the pitch, but the closest the 15-year-old got to the action was a second half warm up.

Gabriel should not be disheartened because United plan to give minutes this summer. The club have handled the teenager sensibly to this point by doing all they can to demonstrate there is a pathway to the first-team, including an introduction to Sir Alex Ferguson and invites into the directors’ box.

Although Gabriel was too young to play in the Premier League last season, there are now no restrictions on which competitions he can feature in, meaning the conversation about when he could make his competitive debut will only grow louder.

In the meantime, the likes of Lacey and Amass should be at the forefront of United fans’ minds ahead of the new campaign. Lacey is particularly exciting, looking primed to build on his positive first-team cameos from last season.

“Where has he been?” Gary Neville quipped on commentary when Lacey stuck the crossbar against Burnley in January. United won’t be hiding Lacey for much longer.

I had a play last night on the Royals and Tigers game, and to spoil any surprise, it was a loser. I took the Royals at +170 mostly because I felt like the line was way off. I still cashed the under, but I hope anyone who is serious about sports betting takes a look at that article. Despite it being a loss, I loved the play. Their best player, Yordan Alvarez, is having an MVP season, yet another reason to keep pushing and see if they can make the postseason.

They did trade away one of their starters already, but I don’t feel like that was a sign of the team trying to give up. I think it was more about their roster and salary than anything. Today, they are putting out Spencer Arrighetti on the mound. For the season, Arrighetti is 7-5 with a 4.34 ERA and a 1.31 WHIP. He has been worse on the road with a 5.52 ERA. He also has allowed eight earned runs in both of his past two road starts. I’m thinking he might be coming out of whatever issues he had in June, though. In May, he had a 0.93 ERA, and in June he had a 9.00 ERA. So far, through three starts, he has allowed eight earned runs in four innings, and two earned runs in 11 innings covering two starts.

The Chicago White Sox were expected to be sellers, but this team has some heart and looks like they are piecing things together. Part of the reason sports are so fun is teams like the White Sox. A team that no one expected anything from this year, and they’ve turned it around to be in a playoff race. There is still a long way to go, and one injury could derail the whole thing, but you have to feel solid about how they’ve played and looked if you’re a Sox fan.

One of the brightest spots on this roster has been today’s starter, Davis Martin. For the season, Martin is 9-5 for the year with a 3.31 ERA and a 1.27 WHIP. Martin has been elite at Guaranteed Rate Field this season with a 1.80 ERA. He has only allowed nine earned runs at home in 45 innings. And, five of those earned runs came in the last start against the Red Sox. Perhaps most impressive is that he has allowed just 33 walks all year, and only 10 have come at home.

Baseball is a sport in which you usually do have the opportunity to follow the sharps and line movement fairly confidently. There aren’t a ton of public bettors loading up on teams. Sharp money tends to move these lines, and the line is moving in favor of the Astros. However, sharps don’t always win either. There is also a move where they will bet on one side, just to lower the line and get bigger money on the opposite side. I could see that happening here.

If you don’t understand what that means, no worries. Basically, I think the White Sox are going to win this game. Martin is a better pitcher, in better form, and more reliable as a home starter. Arrighetti is bad on the road, and something has been wrong with him since June. It is possible that sharps saw some good value in the Astros, but now that the line is a lot lower, I think the Sox are the right side and could see money poured into them late. Give me the White Sox on the moneyline.

For the fourth time in his NBA career, LeBron James is changing teams. After weighing pitches from the Cleveland Cavaliers, Miami Heat, Minnesota Timberwolves and Golden State Warriors, arguably the greatest player in NBA history has elected to play for… the Philadelphia 76ers.

It’s an outcome that would have felt almost inconceivable a month ago, but represents the culmination of a brief yet very effective roster facelift from new head of basketball operations Mike Gansey. The 76ers turned Paul George and two first-round picks into Jaylen Brown in a stunning trade with Boston last month. They split their mid-level exception across Dean Wade and Anfernee Simons.

Now, they land James for a minimum contract. That’s a no-brainer on their end, but what about LeBron’s? Does Philadelphia really make sense as his final NBA team? Below, the CBS Sports NBA staff will grade LeBron’s self-described “last decision.”

LeBron James picks the 76ers: Staff grades

Brad Botkin: B+

Five teams were in the hunt for LeBron. If we assign a letter grade to each, I believe the Timberwolves, from a pure basketball and championship-viability standpoint, were the A. I believe in Rudy Gobert‘s durability more than Joel Embiid‘s for obvious reasons. I like Minnesota’s shooting better. Anthony Edwards would’ve been right there with Giannis Antetokounmpo as the single best teammate available to James, and personally, I would give Edwards the edge. 

But no question the Sixers are stacked. And pretty deep. The first thing I think about is the regular-season leeway that this provides. Injuries are huge part of the regular-season equation, and having even one more All-Star-level player insulates a team like the Sixers exponentially. Nobody has to get leaned on too much — that’s huge for a 42-year-old LeBron and clearly for Embiid.

So now, hopefully, the Sixers don’t have to tap their tank just to go into the playoffs through the play-in. Now, once we get to the postseason, it will be all about Embiid’s health and Nick Nurse’s ability to balance the touches and creative opportunities within a five-man starting lineup full of 1A scorers, which he has a full season to figure out with, again, more room for trial and error. Nurse is nothing if not creative, and LeBron looked pretty damn good in a selectively supplementary role alongside Luka Dončić and Austin Reaves last season with the Lakers. His passing will connect Philly’s score-heavy roster, too. Again, I think the Wolves would’ve been the best basketball team of the five suitors, but that’s certainly debatable. The Sixers look awesome on paper. Now we see how it transfers to the court. 

John Gonzalez: A+

This works both ways — for the player and the organization. In LeBron’s announcement, he mentioned that he thinks he can make the Sixers a championship team. He’s right. The Sixers had a LeBron-sized hole at power forward before he decided to take his talents to Philly. Now he joins a team with a young, dynamic backcourt of Tyrese Maxey and VJ Edgecombe, along with newly acquired Jaylen Brown and former MVP Joel Embiid. How much they get out of Embiid during the regular season and playoffs is obviously critical to the team’s title aspirations, but having James to pick up some of that slack as needed will help mightily. The Knicks are the champs and should still be considered the favorites in the East until unseated. And the Celtics have proven time and again that they’re perennial contenders. But for the first time in a long time, the Sixers will be right there with their two main rivals, challenging for eastern conference supremacy. That’s a huge win for the franchise, and at this late stage in his career, that’s the best James could hope for. 

Robby Kalland: B+

As everyone else has noted, this is an absolute home run for the Sixers, given the caliber of player they’re getting for the cost. LeBron was the best player in a playoff series win three months ago and now becomes a supporting starter for Philly on a veteran minimum deal. As for LeBron, I think it’s a solid and understandable choice, but there is some risk he’s taking on.

The upside here is tantalizing. The Sixers are going to be an unbelievably good offensive team. Maxey, Brown, Embiid, Edgecombe and James is a dynamic starting five, with all five players capable of applying rim pressure and stressing a defense. Even in the times when Embiid is out, this is a team built to score with anyone in the league. Defense is going to be a bigger question mark, with so much hinging on Embiid’s health. Brown and Edgecombe give them strong versatility on the perimeter, but LeBron isn’t going to help much with rim protection at this point in his career and they will be reliant on Embiid to be near his best on that end if they’re going to hit that title ceiling. 

Cleveland or Miami would’ve been easier retirement tours with less pressure to deliver, given he’s already won titles in both spots, but to James’ credit he’s going to the one place where his reputation could take a hit if the season goes south. Nick Nurse will have to walk an incredible tightrope in terms of ego management in this new-look Sixers locker room with the additions of Brown and James, and there’s certainly combustible potential with that group if things don’t click. Still, James saw what New York was like after snapping a drought and decided that upside was worth the risk. From the outside, it’s going to be entertaining no matter which way things go. 

Sam Quinn: B

For the Sixers, this is an A+. It’s one of the great value signings in NBA history. James may no longer be a max-caliber player, but for the minimum, the degree of surplus value he generates is still mind-boggling. The 76ers have All-Stars at point guard, small forward and center. They have a No. 3 overall pick coming off of a great rookie season at shooting guard. And now, they have arguably the greatest player who has ever lived at power forward. They have a real chance to win the championship. On their end, it’s a no-brainer.

On LeBron’s, it’s a bit iffier. The upside is obviously considerable. Four players in NBA history have won titles with three different teams, but James is already the only player to lead three franchises to championships. If he goes four-for-four (something no player has ever done), that’s a legitimate feather in his “greatest of all time” cap, something he can hold up to Michael Jordan’s six-for-six Finals record. He will have a chance to end a 44-year championship drought in Philadelphia. Considering how interested he seemingly was in ending New York’s drought, joining a similarly historic franchise obviously makes some narrative sense. But boy, is he taking a risk here. We’ve been saying “if Joel Embiid is healthy…” for a decade now. If he isn’t, Philly probably doesn’t have the frontcourt depth to really do this. And if it goes poorly, those Philadelphia fans aren’t known for their restraint. This could go very, very well. It could also be a sour ending to a legendary career.

Cameron Salerno: A-

I would give it an A+ grade if LeBron didn’t take multiple weeks to make a decision. From a basketball perspective, Philly gives him the best chance to win a title. But the other part of the equation is how good the Eastern Conference is now. This offseason seems like the tipping point of the Eastern Conference overtaking the West as the best and deepest conference in the league. LeBron won’t have to be the first or even second option on a given night, which will be great for his longevity throughout the season. The 76ers will be must-watch TV this season. I really, really like the fit.

A pop-up to Finalize Lineup appeared which allowed me to complete my entry and choose what kind of entry I wanted to play. Users can choose whether to submit their entry as a Flex or Power Play. 

In a Flex Play, users can get picks incorrect and still receive a payout. With the example entry above, two correct picks was worth 1x, which is just your full entry fee amount returned. Three correct picks out of three in this Flex Play returned 2.25x. So a $10 entry would have returned $22.50. Users must select at least three picks to be eligible for Flex Play.

In a Power Play, users must get all picks correct to get paid out. Three out of three picks for the entry above returned 5x ($50 payout on $10 entry). 

Here are the payouts details on PrizePicks:

Pick ‘Em Arena, which is available to users in 17 states, follows the same payout structure as Pick ‘Em. For users in Colorado, each entry in Pick ‘Em Arena must contain at least three picks. The entry follows the same format as Pick ‘Em, but user entries are automatically submitted to a group depending on the time of submission, user’s skill level and number of picks made. Based on how you do in the group, you can win even more. If multiple players tie for first place in a group, the prize is split unless there’s a winning Flex lineup in the group. Here’s how picks are scored in a group setting.

 A “demon” pick is a projection square which is red, meaning that prediction is harder to win. A “goblin” pick is a projection square which is green, meaning that prediction is easier to win. You must pick “More” on both demon and goblin projections.

For example, one Goblin pick for Spurs guard Stephon Castle in the NBA was more than 17 points, even though he was averaging 24 points per game at the time of writing. Meanwhile, Knicks guard Jalen Brunson had available Demon picks of more than 29.5, 32.5 and 34.5 points, despite averaging just 26 points per game at the time of writing. 

Streak is available in 10 states. This is a free-to-play option on PrizePicks and helps users get additional rewards as they build wins. The idea is a user must make one prediction on any player. If that pick is correct, the user’s streak is extended to the next day to make one more pick. As the user keeps getting picks correct, he or she unlocks more rewards. According to PrizePicks, the cash prize in Streak could be up to $1 million depending on how many wins you string together.

PrizePicks says it pays out users within 30 minutes of a contest settling. Most lineups are generally settled once the official score is finalized after a game ends. PrizePicks says users who have to wait longer than 30 minutes for a payout for all completed projections in a lineup should reach out to the live support team.

PrizePicks Fantasy promos and bonuses for existing users

PrizePicks offers regular bonuses for existing users. Referral bonuses can be earned up to 10 times in a 30-day period. Users can access referral codes from the PrizePicks app or website in the “Get $” tab or the “Invite Friends” link. Once the referred user signs up using the referral code and makes a deposit, the existing users get a referral bonus.

Reboots occur when a player unexpectedly exits a game. If this occurs, entries are modified in the same way they would be for a player not participating. This means that leg of the entry is voided, with the other legs still available. In NFL, college basketball, NBA and WNBA contests, entries are eligible for a reboot when a user selects “More” on a player’s projection, the player exits the game in the first half and does not return for the second half. Flex Friday is another regular promotion on the platform. In the Promos tab on the app or website, users can “opt in” to Flex Friday protected plays by noon ET. Users can set alerts and limits while also taking timeouts or self-excluding. Deposits can be made to a PrizePicks account from PayPal, Venmo, a bank account, credit/debit card or Apple Pay. However, there are some restrictions depending on the user’s state.

Visa credit cards and Discover credit/debit cards can only be used for deposits. The same applies to Apple Pay. Mastercard credit cards are available in every state except South Carolina. PayPay and Venmo are not available in New Hampshire, Maine, Missouri, Colorado and Delaware.

Manchester City manager Enzo Maresca spoke to journalists for the first time since his appointment as Pep Guardiola’s successor

Enzo Maresca conducted the first press conference of his time as Manchester City manager when he spoke to reporters on Friday. The Italian fielded questions on a range of topics as he spoke about what he called the ‘privilege’ of replacing Pep Guardiola as manager.

Rodri was the big story of the day as Real Madrid eye the best player from the World Cup and City’s contract offer remains unsigned with the Spaniard into the final 12 months of his deal. There has also been movement on the future of James Trafford this week with Leeds looking sign the goalkeeper.

Maresca is at the end of his first week with players at the City Football Academy, with a squad that is mostly made up of youngsters having returned to training this week. Nearly all of the group will head off to Asia on Tuesday for three fixtures, where they will be joined by some of City’s senior stars after their efforts at the World Cup.

Here is a look at how Maresca presented himself in his opening press conference and how he came across.

He was early

A silly point to start with but these things do make a difference and if you are after a first impression it could hardly be better; the last thing a new manager wants to give journalists waiting to write a piece about Guardiola’s successor is to make them wait on a sunny afternoon. It won’t make any difference to how Maresca fares, but however daft it sounds things like that could unconsciously influence how kindly his start is looked upon in a way that lateness would be remembered.

Taking on the challenge

There’s no point in hiding from the fact that taking over from Pep Guardiola is one of the most daunting tasks going, and Maresca went even further by referencing United after Sir Alex Ferguson and Arsenal after Arsene Wenger. It was though, he said on a number of occasions, a privilege to be able to have the opportunity to lead City. Just as with players, you need your coach to be excited to be through the door and Maresca has fresh energy to be able to bring to the environment.

Backing his brand

Maresca does not have the CV that Guardiola had but he is happy enough with his experiences at Leicester and Chelsea to present them as what he wants to continue at the Etihad, both in terms of the playing style and the trophies. Fans will have doubts over both before the action starts but Maresca came across as calm and confident of being able to get what he wants from the squad.

Personal touch

Maresca did not offer much up around transfer targets and was concise on his time at Chelsea after an acrimonious exit, but he did offer more than he had to when answering certain questions – something Guardiola was not always known for. There was mention of how the manager had kept in touch with Jack Grealish after leaving and he went further than he could have done in addressing Rodri’s future.

LeBron James is signing with the Philadelphia 76ers, he announced Friday in a shocking move. James’ decision, after three-plus weeks of free agency and tons of speculation, comes after James’ eight-year run with the Los Angeles Lakers ended on June 30 when he informed the team he planned to pursue other options hours before the start of the official free-agency period. Now, the 41-year-old James will put on his fourth NBA uniform as he attempts to end a 43-year championship drought in the City of Brotherly Love. 

James will be signing a two-year deal worth $8 million, per ESPN.

James was also considering returns to the Cleveland Cavaliers and Miami Heat in this free agency, with the Golden State Warriors and Minnesota Timberwolves in the hunt as well. In the end, James said on social media he contemplated retirement but wanted to chase another championship. The 76ers haven’t won an NBA title since 1983.

Philadelphia, as of Friday afternoon, had the fourth-best 2027 title odds (+1000 on FanDuel) behind the San Antonio Spurs (+260), Oklahoma City Thunder (+260) and New York Knicks (+900). The 76ers were considered +7500 longshots as recently as June 30.

LeBron explains his ‘last decision’

James said his decision to choose Philadelphia ultimately came down to his quest for another championship.

“This is my last decision. I’m not going for money. I’m not going for family. What am I really playing for at this point? I still want to sacrifice,” James said. “I still want to work. I still want to grind. I still want to compete, to win and to have a chance at the feeling of winning another championship. I believe I can help make the Philadelphia 76ers a championship team and I am so excited to energize a new fan base and start this incredible journey one last time.  Thank you LA. This marks the fourth time James has changed teams via free agency as he enters his 24th season. He says it will be his last. In 2010, he left the Cavaliers to join the Heat. In 2014, he returned to Cleveland after a successful run in Miami that included those two championships. After leading the Cavaliers to their first title in 2016, he departed for the Lakers in 2018. Now, James will attempt to make it four-for-four as he tries to lead Philadelphia to its first championship since 1983, when Moses Malone famously predicted that the team would go “fo’, fo,’ fo’” with sweeps in all three rounds of the postseason and came just a single game short. 

76ers’ history with LeBron

This isn’t the first time the 76ers have attempted to acquire James. In 2018, they met with his agent, Rich Paul, during the brief free agency that ended with James joining the Lakers. At that point, the 76ers were not far removed from their infamous “Process” and had just reached the playoffs for the first time with Joel Embiid leading the way.

Now, Embiid is a former MVP and arguably the least important starter on the team. When Paul shared a whiteboard of options he and James were considering, only one player had a star next to his name: Philadelphia starting point guard Tyrese Maxey. The 76ers just acquired Jaylen Brown in a blockbuster trade with the Boston Celtics. Last year’s No. 3 overall pick, VJ Edgecombe, is an emerging superstar. At least on paper, adding James gives the 76ers one of the most talented starting lineups in NBA history, and one that is, just as importantly, as well-equipped to manage Embiid’s frequent absences as possible.

Though Philadelphia lacks a second, established big man, this team has more depth than most rosters with this much star power. New president of basketball operations Mike Gansey, who, coincidentally enough, was the runner-up to James as Ohio’s Mr. Basketball in 2001, brought ace defender Dean Wade with him from the Cavaliers. The 76ers got a steal in Anfernee Simons on the free-agent market as their primary bench scorer at just $5.3 million. With young players like Labaron Philon, Dominick Barlow and Adem Bona coming up as well, the 76ers should have everything they need to meaningfully contend for a championship. In leaving Los Angeles, James apparently did not feel confident that the Lakers could offer him the same.

Why LeBron left the Lakers

The relationship between James and the Lakers reportedly began to fray around the team’s failed acquisition of Russell Westbrook, but the event that truly set this move in motion came a year after those 2024 trade negotiations. At the 2025 deadline, the Lakers landed Luka Dončić in a deal with the Dallas Mavericks. That moved their timeline away from James and Anthony Davis, who was shipped out to Dallas in the blockbuster Dončić trade. When James opted into the final year of his contract last season, Paul released a statement indicating some displeasure with the direction the Lakers were moving in.

“LeBron wants to compete for a championship,” Paul told ESPN at the time. “He knows the Lakers are building for the future. He understands that, but he values a realistic chance of winning it all. We are very appreciative of the partnership that we’ve had for eight years with (governor) Jeanie (Buss) and (general manager) Rob (Pelinka) and consider the Lakers as a critical part of his career.”

There were rumblings at the time that James might pursue a trade, but the 76ers weren’t in a position to deal at that point. Their only viable matching salary would have been for Embiid or Paul George, both of whom would have impeded the Lakers’ cap space plans. James ultimately remained in Los Angeles last season, and it seemed as though he and the team turned a corner when they went 15-2 in March. However, injuries to Dončić and Austin Reaves (who recently signed a four-year, $185 million max extension) robbed James and the Lakers of the chance to compete seriously for a championship last spring. 

James led the Lakers past the Houston Rockets in the first round before their season ended in a second-round sweep at the hands of the Oklahoma City Thunder. Once again, questions arose over his future. The Lakers had the capacity to create more than $50 million in cap space. Doing so, however, would mean renouncing their Bird Rights to James. They could have potentially used some of their money to re-sign James, but as far as is publicly known, no offer was made before free agency. James preferred not to wait and find out what the Lakers were doing or how interested they would be in a ninth season together. On the morning free agency began, James informed the Lakers that he would not be returning. 

As it turns out, the Lakers wouldn’t have had the money to make him a substantial offer anyway. They kicked off free agency with a series of stunning moves headlined by a four-year, $130 million sign-and-trade agreement to land Utah Jazz center Walker Kessler. They followed that move up by signing Quentin Grimes, Sandro Mamukelashvili and Collin Sexton, effectively resetting their team around Dončić and Reaves.

The Lakers felt they needed an all-out youth movement to realistically compete with the Thunder and San Antonio Spurs moving forward. The 76ers went the other way, threading the needle beautifully between their existing core and splashy external additions. James is 41, more than twice Edgecombe’s age, with Brown, Embiid and Maxey slotting neatly between them. Philadelphia has set itself up to win both now and later, giving James a realistic contender for as long as he decides to keep playing.

The top Vikings injury concern can be found in rookie defensive tackle Caleb Banks. Chosen at No. 18 overall, Mr. Banks boasts a hulking frame, tremendous athleticism, and a foot that has kept him on the sidelines due to injuries (note: injuries).

The old adage is that a player “can’t make the club in the tub.” The basic idea is that too much time recovering in the ice tub is the kiss of death in a sport as competitive as NFL football. But while he isn’t in danger of not making the team, Banks is in danger of getting leapfrogged on the depth chart.

Vikings Injury Concern & DT Caleb Banks

O’Connell addressed the health issue at mandatory minicamp. As is his wont, O’Connell maintained an optimistic posture.

“Had the offseason continued,” the head coach insisted, “he probably would’ve started to get some work in some of the individual drills and then progress him into some of the team stuff.” Banks, in other words, had been getting healthy. O’Connell said that things were looking so good that seeing OTAs and minicamp continue would have involved Banks getting into the on-field work rather than just focusing on his recovery.

Pretty soon, O’Connell’s optimism will get put to the test.

The large defensive tackle has already missed valuable on-field work in the spring and early portion of the summer. Missing even more work would be detrimental, to say the least. That observation could be especially pronounced given that a critique of his game already is that he needed further refinement.

Winning in the trenches is a battle involving one’s feet, hands, and eyes. Small details are very important even if having massive muscles helps. Knowing how to counter the technique of the talented blockers opposite the DT is the sort of thing that’s next to impossible without physical reps under the tutelage of Ryan Nielsen, who looks like he’s a detailed teacher and tactician.

DT1 Jalen Redmond is a stud who doesn’t appear likely to get moved off his top spot. If anything, Mr. Redmond is going to demand a larger portion of the pie as he moves from success story in Minnesota to a defender who gets recognition around the NFL.

Next up are some combination of Levi Drake Rodriguez, Ty Ingram-Dawkins, Domonique Orange, and Banks (among others). Realistically, there’s going to be room for a minimum of four or five defensive linemen to earn large roles. Banks will be among them so long as health doesn’t totally derail his rookie season. Can he be an early starter, though?

Best case for the Vikings is that Caleb Banks ends up being a starting 5-tech. He would be a matchup nightmare for a lot of offensive linemen given that he boasts such unique abilities.

Again, though, there’s the central concern of his health. Where do things stand with the foot injuries that made his selection at No. 18 such a shocking move? Nolan Teasley can’t be blamed for whatever takes place here since the new GM is so new that he didn’t run the Vikings’ most recent draft. O’Connell, though, would get an earful online if things don’t work out for Banks in 2026.

Caleb Banks, 23, is listed as being 6’6″ and 327 pounds. After getting drafted, Banks did say that he planned to get a touch slimmer as he prepared for life in the NFL. Getting his body in a good spot can ideally lead to a long, healthy career in the NFL.
