Vikings Appear to be Flirting with a Foolish Kyler Murray Decision

As of right now, the Vikings appear genuine in the desire to see if Kyler Murray can play in Week 2. That’s a foolish thing to consider.

Minnesota’s QB1 suffered a scary concussion in the Week 1 Packers game. Most believe that the hit was dirty — myself included — but I don’t believe it was intentional. Rather, the head shot came as a result of an awkward moment where Murray got crumpled between two Green Bay defenders in fast pursuit.

Regardless of intent, the Vikings are now dealing with somebody who is recovering from a concussion. Where he is in that journey is beyond my expertise or knowledge since I’m not a medical doctor.

What I can say, though, is that the Minnesota Vikings know what it’s like to have a chronically injured QB1. Looking back to 2025 with J.J. McCarthy means seeing what sort of issues can arise when a passer is commonly out of the lineup. Moreover, there’s the Ryan Kelly example, a key piece of the puzzle in 2025 who was out a ton due to suffering three concussions.

At the risk of being overly dramatic, my perspective: danger abounds in this moment. Do not rush Murray coming off this injury.

Vikings Appear Willing to Play Kyler Murray if Cleared

To be sure, there are reasons to believe that Minnesota isn’t fully invested in starting Murray.

The team is commonly found being ultra cautious with injury. A great example can be found in the move to shuffle Jordan Mason to the IR due to a thumb fracture. Other instances can be found — keeping Justin Jefferson out for nearly all of training camp last year, Christian Darrisaw commonly getting rest, and so on. By this point, caution with injury is a well-worn path.

Does the team truly plan to pivot off that cautious approach to get Mr. Murray onto the field a week after a very scary concussion?

Of course, the other possibility is that Minnesota is flirting with the idea of playing Murray without any genuine desire to see the idea reach consummation. Doing so forces the Bears to prepare for two quarterbacks.

Chicago is coming off a week where they looked like a juggernaut. Dropping 59 points onto the table has a way of getting people’s attention. Needing to plan for both of Murray and Carson Wentz could be one way of introducing a bit more complexity into the mix. Tossing some sand in the gears will make the operation a touch less smooth over in The Windy City.

Is that’s all that’s happening?

On Wednesday, Kevin O’Connell spoke about the possibility of Kyler Murray playing on Sunday. On the topic of being ruled out, O’Connell was quick to answer that the QB1 isn’t officially out: “I have not. He’ll just be limited today and we’re just going day by day right now.”

As it relates to when he would need to clear the concussion protocol, Friday is the critical day: “Yeah, I think Friday would be. Having the ability to go through the next couple days, for sure, see where he’s at. But at the same time deferring so much to those medical professionals that he’s talking to. He’s gotta be medically cleared before we even have the conversation about playing in a game.”

The medical “protocol,” O’Connell further explained, “is the guiding light behind all this.”

The Vikings’ skipper uplifted two separate criteria in these clarifying answers. Most obvious is the medical hurdle to clear. Nothing can go forward unless the trained medical experts offer the green light. O’Connell, Murray, and anyone else is very wise to lean on the knowledge of trained experts.

But then there’s another layer: the tidbit about the coaching staff making a decision to play Murray after being medically cleared, if that were to occur.

To my eye, the Vikings would be foolish to rush things even if the QB1 is cleared on Friday. The goal in 2026 is not to win in Week 2 alone. Each and every game is important but the Bears game is a single battle rather than the full war. Keeping an eye on the broader objective — winning the war that is making a ruckus in the playoffs — is what’s needed in this moment.

Kyler Murray is a 29-year-old man. Keeping his long-term health in mind is something that should be the top priority.

The best part forward in Week 2 is to rally around Carson Wentz as the starter while Murray gets more time to rest and heal.
