If you’re looking to try a new, open source 3D modeling CAD suite, especially one with automation-friendly interfaces, take a look at SolidCraft. It’s under development but there’s support for all the usual features like sketches, solid modeling, and constraints as well as a full parametric feature timeline.
SolidCraft offers desktop, browser-based, headless CLI, and MCP interfaces.
A parametric timeline essentially means the model exists not as a single discrete object, but as the sum of a sequence of operations. One advantage of this is being able to set things up so that if one changes a value (like wall thickness), all the features that depend on that change automatically get rebuilt as a result. But there’s more!
Written entirely in Rust, SolidCraft can run as a desktop app or as a web app in a browser. Everything the user can do in SolidCraft is a command with JSON parameters, and it offers a built-in headless command line interface and even an MCP (Model Context Protocol) server built specifically to give AI agents a way to use the program, should one be interested in experimenting with that sort of thing.
SolidCraft is still in early development, but so far quite a few features seem to work as they should. Check out the development roadmap for details, and there’s a live online demo if you’re in the mood to click around and get a feel for things.

If you missed out on getting your iPhone Duo Friday morning, you likely won’t see yours show up until early 2027. At least is isn’t getting worse anymore.
iPhone Duo dates slip into January
On Friday, Apple opened preorders for the iPhone Duo, its first foldable. Announced in September, the buzz following the event left little doubt that it would be an immediate hit. And that certainly seems to be the case. The iPhone Duo sold out almost immediately, with dates slipping into late November and early December within moments of preorders opening. Just a couple of months after departing Xbox, Double Fine has a new game out. Thank You Bus Driver is the first project from Double Fine Action Labs, the studio’s label for smaller, experimental games.
In this chaotic riff on Crazy Taxi, you play as a bus driver who yearns for gratitude from unruly passengers. During your journey, your employer will add more rules for you to enforce, such as making sure passengers don’t fall asleep or clip their toenails during a ride. You can try to keep them in line with a slap (which reminds me of the delightful Thank Goodness You’re Here) or kick them off the bus. All the while, you’ll be trying to reach your next stop before the time runs out.
This looks like a fun way to spend a few hours. I can’t wait to see what else the newly-independent Double Fine is cooking up.
Valor Mortis

Developer: One More Level Publishers: Lyrical Games, One More Level Platforms: Steam (Windows), Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5 Price: $40. Available on Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass. The $60 deluxe edition includes an expansion that’s set to arrive next year
I really like the Ghostrunner series so I was intrigued when I learned One More Level was moving on to something totally different. Valor Mortis is a first-person Soulslike in which you take on the role of a British soldier who signed up to fight for Napoleon. William was believed to be dead after a battle, but is roused by a corrupted Napoleon (played by Vincent Cassel, of all people). A plague has transformed the other survivors into grotesque enemies, but at least you have supernatural powers at your disposal, along with firearms and melee weapons.
The usual elements of a Soulslike are here. You’ll collect catalysts (don’t call them souls) from vanquished enemies and spend these on upgrades at checkpoints. Build modifiers are out there in the world for you to find. The developers took some inspiration from Metroidvania games as well, since some new abilities can open up paths and shortcuts.
PS5 and PlayStation Portal owners who’d like to give Valor Mortis a go may want to note that there’s a 1.5-hour trial available on PS Plus Premium.

Ratatan
Developers: TVT Co. Ltd., Ratata Arts Publisher: Game Source Entertainment Platforms: Steam (Windows; leaving early access), Xbox Series X/S, PS5, Nintendo Switch 2 Price : $35
I’ve been keeping my eye on this spiritual successor to Patapon from series creator Hiroyuki Kotani for a while. It’s a rhythm action game and, because it’s 2026, of course it’s a roguelite as well.
On each run, you take charge of a group of minions and use rhythm-based commands to tell them what to do. You can launch attacks, reposition your charges to avoid incoming fire and shield them from damage.
I’ve played a few runs and, even though the framerate is a bit choppy on my PS5, I’ve enjoyed trying to get to grips with how it all works. The action is more fluid than in traditional turn-based games, but you do have to wait for the music to loop around before you can take any meaningful action. Having to manage that as well as my own character’s positioning while accounting for incoming enemy attacks is a lot to juggle. I can’t really tell how much impact my elemental attack upgrades are having either.
The artwork is really pretty, though! I’m planning to stick with it a while longer to see if I can figure out how to make more progress.
I like the art style of Colorbound too. This is a platformer in which you use color to reshape the world and solve puzzles. Using a lighter color might make a platform float, and a darker one could make it drop down to where you are.
Panpipe Studio drew from its Chilean culture and heritage for this game, in which you play as Anku, a boy who sets out to reunite his late grandfather’s band one last time for a proper sendoff. It looks lovely, and I’m very tempted to pick it up.

Enshrouded
Developer/publisher: Keen Games Platforms: Steam (Windows; leaving early access), PS5. Coming to Xbox Series X/S in spring 2027 Price: Usually $40, with a 10 percent discount until October 29 (PS Plus required for PS5 discount)
Keen Games gave its co-op survival action RPG Enshroudeda massive update as it brought the game out of early access on Steam. The game also made its debut on PS5 this week. The full map (including a fresh biome) is now open to explore, the story is fully fleshed out — at least for now — and there are higher maximum levels for players and their gear. Keen also overhauled the rendering system as well as the early stages of the game, while adding 14 new enemy types and nine more types of spells.

Perhaps the most interesting update is the new logic system. This creation suite, which is called Sparkworks, lets players craft their own adventures, dungeons and interactive bases that they can share with the community. It sure seems like there’s a ton for new and returning players to dig into.
Pixel Washer
Developer: Valadria Publisher: Acclaim Platform: Steam (Windows; early access). Coming to Switch 2 in 2027 Price: Usually $13, with a 15 percent discount until October 22

It’s still odd to think of Acclaim as an indie publisher, but there’s lots about our current reality that doesn’t make much sense so I can roll with it. This week, it brought a powerwashing sim (not that one) into the world.
Pixel Washer straps a powerwasher to a piggy. There are no prizes for guessing that your mission is to blast away gunk and grime to make a range of environments look pristine, upgrading your gear as you go.
One of my favorite things about this is that Acclaim looked to the past for the launch trailer. Its narrator is Tim Kitzrow, the voice of NBA Jam (boy, do I hope Acclaim can revive that series).

Penguin Colony
Developer: Origame Digital Publisher: Fellow Traveller Platforms: Steam (Windows; Steam Deck Verified), GOG, Humble Store. Coming to Switch and PS5 in 2027 Price: Usually $15, with a 10 percent discount until October 30
It’s horror season, so of course we have to highlight a scary game or two. I really love the concept of Penguin Colony. For its follow up to Umurangi Generation, Origame Digital asked, “what if we adapted H.P. Lovecraft’s At the Mountains of Madness from the perspective of penguins?”
These birds are just living their lives in the Antarctic in the 1930s when Nazis and Kaitiaki show up in search of an ancient being. I’ll leave it to you to determine which group wants to harness the being’s destructive power and which would like to make sure it rests for another century. You can swap between different penguins and follow these humans (I’m sure everything will go well for them!) or explore the oddities of this pocket of the world. It’ll take multiple playthroughs to discover everything, and I’m intrigued to find out what horrors lie within.

Tenebris Somnia
Developers: Andrés Borghi, Saibot Studios Publisher: New Blood Interactive Platforms: Steam (Windows; Steam Deck Verified), Xbox Series X/S, PS5, Switch Price: $25
I don’t think I will ever correctly spell Tenebris Somnia without having to look it up, but this is an interesting game for plenty of other reasons. It’s a retro-inspired, pixel-art survival horror game with live-action cutscenes. It’s directed by Andrés Borghi, who previously made the gothic fighting game The Black Heart and has worked as a visual effects artist on movies such as When Evil Lurks.

The cutscenes are at the heart of Tenebris Somnia, as they’re said to hold the game’s secrets. The visuals of those and the gameplay are pulling me in. I wish I had enough time to play all of these neat-looking games!
Hubert
Developer/publisher: Brocap Studio Platforms: Steam (Windows; demo available). Coming to PS5 later in October Price: Usually $20, with a 10 percent discount until October 28

Let’s wrap things up for this week with a shepherding adventure, because I will always include a dog game if I can. As Hubert, you’ll herd sheep through harsh weather and tough terrain with the help of a human. This pup will also need to fend off wolves to keep the flock safe.
It’s said to be a short game, lasting about three to four hours. While it’s not officially Steam Deck Verified, the developers say Hubert is optimized for Valve’s handheld device. I look forward to discovering “poop points” for Hubert on my Deck at some point.
There’s a tendency among cherished brands to licence their name and logo onto all sorts of novelty items in order to make a quick buck. Joining this trend is the guitar maker Fender, who have lent their name to a chopping board in the shape of their famous Telecaster. The existence of such a product seems to have been a direct challenge to [Not A Luthier], who promptly bought one and turned it into a real guitar. It’s a genuine Fender, but is it a genuine Fender guitar? Not really, but it’s an entertaining build.
The chopping board isn’t made of great material, instead it’s a set of strips of wood, we’re guessing probably bamboo or rubberwood, glued together. It’s robust, but noticeably thinner than the guitar whose shape it takes, and with a not-great finish. The build is not too different from any other electric guitar build we’ve seen, with the main challenge being that the bridge and pickups need spacers underneath them to compensate for the reduced thickness of the wood.
The video is below the break and makes for a soothing watch as an in-depth guitar build, complete with a moment of drilling all the way through the board and fabricating a plug to hide the evidence. The final guitar seems to sound alright, but we’re not guitarists so maybe a more practiced ear should judge. The genuine Fender logo is still proudly on it so it’s a Fender of sorts, but just like with the chopping board, it’s best value is in novelty.
Photo credit: Polymarket Visitors walking the floor of the 2026 China International Industry Fair in Beijing came face to face with a machine that stands four meters tall and weighs 1.2 tons. Neo1 from NeodraDynamics Robotics Technology does not look like the smaller electric humanoids that have spent years practicing in labs. Its frame uses a hydraulic-electric hybrid drive, with 39 of its 41 active joints powered by miniature digital hydraulic linear actuators the company built itself. Each of those actuators weighs roughly one kilogram yet produces continuous thrust measured in tons. The remaining two joints, both rotational points in the forearms, rely on electric drives.
A true super-humanoid hero
I first saw Neo1 at WRC 2026 and was genuinely impressed. The 4-meter, 1.2-ton humanoid from Beijing-based NeodraDynamics has returned at CIIF 2026.
Neo1 is built for 4D work– heavy assembly, deep-sea operations, port and mine material handling, nuclear facility maintenance and fuel transfer, emergency rescue, and high-altitude construction…These are dangerous, dirty, high-intensity jobs it is designed to take on in place of people.
It uses a hydraulic-electric hybrid drive with 41 active DoF– 39 hydraulically actuated joints and two electrically driven forearm rotations.

Each arm is rated for a 300 kg payload, with a combined two-arm payload of 500 kg. Its dexterous hands claim 500 kgf of grip force and 0.01 mm fingertip precision, while the arms have a 1.7-meter working radius.
Neo1 is also designed for extreme environments, with claimed operating temperatures from −50°C to 250°C and depths of up to 10,000 meters, alongside tolerance to radiation, dust and vibration.
NeodraDynamics is bringing Neo1 into JD Industrial’s supply chain and industrial sites to test how it performs in real-world applications.
The combination allows a dual-arm robot to carry a payload of 500 kilograms (1,102 pounds) while retaining repeat positioning accuracy of ±0.005 millimeters. So far, the data have come from the corporation itself; nevertheless, we have some qualms about this, as no independent verification has been found in public sources. Essentially, the design is intended for jobs where purely electric robots have struggled to keep up, such as moving heavy gear under shock loads, in grimy or irradiated environments, or in extreme temperatures and pressures that standard motors and seals cannot handle. Their founder, Yang Tao, has described the concept as a method for robots to go beyond the limitations of human physical capabilities, rather than simply duplicating their dimensions, allowing them to take on activities that people are simply not capable of performing.

AUTHENTIC TRANSFORMING ACTION – Build Soundwave with his rocket pod, laser blaster, and dart accessories, then transform him from robot and cassette…
INTERACTIVE SOUND EFFECTS – Press Soundwave’s play button to activate specially recorded voice and sound effects that capture the character’s iconic…
The company lists some potential applications, including heavy component assembly and port cargo handling, fuel transfer and equipment maintenance in areas with radiation-resistant hydraulic modules, subsea work under water pressures that would crush ordinary robots, underground mining, and disaster cleanup. All of them are classified as 4D tasks, which are professions that are dangerous, dirty, demanding, and unappealing to do.
The company, which was founded by Tsinghua University alumni, creates both the digital hydraulic components and the entire platform from scratch. They demonstrated the machine at the recent fair in collaboration with JD Industrial, who are exploring some prototype projects through their supply chain, though we are still waiting for a public price, delivery timeline, and real-world endurance data.
When the robot appeared at the World Robot Conference in Beijing and the October fair in the same city, it was clear they were looking for feedback from industry professionals, but it’s worth noting that the payload, thrust, and precision figures that everyone is so excited about are still just manufacturer claims for the time being. Hydraulic systems have long proven capable of delivering huge force in a relatively small space, but they also pose significant issues in terms of fluid management, heat, sealing, and control.
The Neo1 concept is to combine such actuators with electric precision on the specified joints, in order to maintain both strength and precise placement capabilities simultaneously. Whether or not this hybrid strategy will stand up over time will be determined by real-world test results, which have yet to be made public.
Adding more RAM can make your laptop more responsive when it runs short of memory during the work you do. Before buying an upgrade, check whether that shortage actually accompanies the slowdown and whether your exact laptop supports more memory.
What more RAM actually changes
Switching between a browser, a spreadsheet and an editing app asks your laptop to keep several sets of working data readily accessible. Random access memory (RAM) provides that temporary space; your storage drive keeps applications and saved files. Keeping active data in RAM provides faster access than retrieving it from storage. A solid-state drive (SSD) is flash-based storage, not extra RAM.
Windows also uses a page file, a storage-backed file that helps manage memory. It can move less frequently used modified data out of physical RAM, freeing space for other work. Transferring blocks of memory data between RAM and storage is part of a process called paging. If your task repeatedly needs data that has been moved to storage, retrieving it adds delay. More capacity helps when it lets that workload remain in RAM.
Capacity is only one memory property. Gigabytes describe how much data fits; transfer rate describes how quickly memory transfers data. Dual-channel operation uses two memory channels to increase available memory bandwidth, the amount of data the connection can carry over time. An upgrade that changes both capacity and channel configuration therefore changes more than the gigabyte total.
This distinction matters for graphics too. Integrated Intel graphics, built into the processor, use system memory. Memory configuration can matter to that workload, but adding capacity does not establish a particular gaming improvement. Doubling RAM is not a promise of doubling speed.
Why RAM isn’t always the cause of a slow laptop
A laptop can feel slow even when its active workload fits comfortably in memory. The central processing unit (CPU) performs computations; the graphics processing unit (GPU) handles graphics work. Extra memory capacity does not make either processor inherently faster.
Storage is another separate constraint. More RAM provides space for active work, while an SSD upgrade changes storage performance.
Other causes include low free storage, background applications and outdated software. The symptom tells you where to investigate, but it does not identify the cause by itself. Slow application switching and a slow internet download are different problems.
If ordinary applications respond normally but the connection slows when a virtual private network (VPN) is enabled, investigate VPN slowdown before buying memory.
How to check whether your laptop needs more RAM
Use the task that actually feels slow. An idle desktop or one brief spike is a poor basis for a purchase. The Windows and Mac instructions below are alternatives: use the branch for your laptop.
Reproduce the slowdown.Open the applications and files you normally use together, then repeat the affected action. Note whether the delay occurs when switching apps, opening a document or performing a particular operation. Keep the same files, power connection and task for the comparison.
Observe memory during that task.
On Windows 11
Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager. Select Performance, then Memory. Note the memory in use and available while the delay occurs. Task Manager also lets you monitor CPU load and disk activity; compare those views rather than treating a high memory percentage as proof.
If available memory stays low whenever the task slows down, investigate a capacity shortage. Heavy disk activity alone does not prove paging, and high CPU activity points to another resource that needs attention.
On a Mac
Open Activity Monitor from Applications > Utilities, then select Memory. Watch the Memory Pressure graph while repeating the task. Apple identifies green pressure as efficient memory use, yellow as a possible need for more RAM and red as a need for more RAM.
Read Swap Used, storage space used for memory swapping, alongside pressure and responsiveness. A large memory-used figure is not automatically bad: macOS puts spare RAM to work caching files so they can be reopened more quickly.
Reduce unnecessary workload safely.Save your work before closing applications you do not need for the affected task. Close them normally rather than terminating unfamiliar system processes. On a Mac, choose Quit from the application’s menu; closing its window does not necessarily quit it. Leave the application you are evaluating open.
Repeat and compare.Repeat the same action with the same file and watch the memory indicators again. Reduced memory pressure together with better responsiveness strengthens the case for more capacity. It does not prove it: closing apps also reduces CPU and other activity, and repeated work may benefit from cached data.
If the delay persists without signs of memory pressure, stop treating extra capacity as the likely fix. If the result varies between attempts, gather more observations or seek help diagnosing the affected application before buying parts.
What application requirements tell you about RAM capacity
An application’s published RAM requirements offer a starting point, not a measurement of the memory your whole workload needs.
For example, Adobe lists 8 GB minimum and 16 GB or more recommended for Photoshop version 27.x and later, checked on 14 October 2026. Those figures apply to Photoshop, not every application.
The recommended figure is the more useful planning reference for Photoshop, but project size and other open applications still affect the memory you need. A published recommendation does not override memory pressure observed during your own work or predict a particular speed gain.
The capacity your laptop supports is a separate limit. Some upgrades require replacing existing modules rather than adding one.
RAM upgrade compatibility: what your model supports
Supported layout: replaceable modules, usable slots and an arrangement the manufacturer supports.
Correct module type: a small-outline dual in-line memory module (SO-DIMM) where the laptop specifies one.
Correct generation and specifications: the required Double Data Rate (DDR) memory generation, supported transfer rate and other model-specific requirements.
Supported capacity: both the total and the permitted module configuration.
For a concrete example, the documented Dell Inspiron 15 3520 DDR4 family supports two SO-DIMM slots and up to 16 GB. Dell lists both one 16 GB module and two 8 GB modules, with the latter identified as dual-channel. The total capacity is the same, but the arrangement differs. Those specifications apply to that documented family, not every Inspiron.
Finding compatible RAM for your laptop starts with its exact model and configuration. The manufacturer’s specifications and service manual control the purchase; an operating-system slot report alone is not enough. The service instructions also determine whether installation is suitable for you or belongs with a technician.
Spend on the bottleneck you can verify
For a supported upgrade, compare the full local cost: compatible memory, any required replacement of existing modules, installation and applicable service terms. Regional versions and parts availability can change that total, so compare quotes for the same configuration rather than the cheapest advertised stick.
A compatible RAM upgrade is worth considering when your normal workload repeatedly runs into memory pressure. When those observations are absent or inconsistent, get the slowdown diagnosed before spending on parts.

Researchers warn that hackers could soon exploit a maximum-severity vulnerability (CVE-2026-103849) affecting Magento and Adobe Commerce, potentially allowing them to execute arbitrary PHP code on store servers.
According to e-commerce security firm Sansec, attacks leveraging the vulnerability, dubbed BlockStrap, have not yet been observed, but threat actors are expected to find a way to exploit it.
The researchers based their assessment on identifying four potential attack paths involving CVE-2026-103849 in less than 24 hours.
The flaw impacts September versions of Adobe Commerce and Magento Open Source through 2.4.9 and Adobe Commerce B2B through 1.5.3.
The security firm warned that Adobe’s “priority 2” rating of this flaw does not reflect the danger and urgency in this case, despite the more complex attack path.
“The attack path is complex, but anyone with an AI agent can reverse-engineer the patch into working exploits in a relatively short time,” stated Sansec states.
“That is why we question Adobe’s priority 2 rating (patch within 30 days). StyleSmuggler went from a priority 1 hotfix to mass exploitation in three days, and BlockStrap is of similar complexity.”
Adobe’s bulletin, published on October 13, describes the flaw as an improper neutralization of special elements used in a template engine, leading to arbitrary code execution.
Sansec explains that BlockStrap is a second-pass template engine directive injection that allows attacker-controlled content in a child email template to be signed and processed again at the root level, executing a smuggled {{block}} directive.
According to Sansec’s analysis, BlockStrap exposes a gap left by the StyleSmuggler fix in the same email-template engine.
Adobe’s fix replaces the generic processing with registered placeholders, preventing exploitation.
Sansec says that a plain Composer install isn’t enough to address the risk, and website administrators must apply the 2026-oct release or Adobe’s isolated patch.
“BlockStrap and StyleSmuggler are separate fixes. You need both, so keep the September VULN-39341 hotfix in place as well,” Sansec cautions.
The e-commerce security company says it will provide an update when it detects mass attack waves, which it expects to occur soon.
Overall prevention scores can hide what happens after initial access. Once attackers are using valid credentials, prevention drops sharply.

Fidelity Investments’ Richard Murphy discusses the work carried out by FCAT and the importance of considering what can be realised if you are curious and determined enough.
Richard Murphy is the vice-president and head of Fidelity Centre for Applied Technology (FCAT) Europe at Fidelity Investments.
FCAT, according to the company, is an “innovation catalyst” where experts “explore new frontiers, analyse societal shifts, and test emerging technologies to help redefine what’s next for financial services and beyond”.
Murphy told SiliconRepublic.com: “If we can predict the outcome, FCAT should not be involved. We work in the grey space. We work with the art of the possible. We pull together ideas. There’s a lot of creativity and imagination involved in what we do. We start small and it’s always about what could happen.”
He explained that FCAT is Fidelity’s speculative innovation wing, where a small team pays particular attention to “what’s over the horizon”.
“So, we look at what could be possible rather than what’s already in place,” said Murphy. “That allows us to both identify an opportunity, experiment with that and then scale it out.”
The purpose, he explained, is to enable Fidelity to propel itself forward in a world that is under constant transformation, which sometimes means “challenging how we do things today”.
“That start-up mindset is very much a part of our DNA,” he said. “There’s a lot of creativity and imagination involved in what we do, but we start small and it’s always about what could happen. It’s not about solving a clearly articulated problem. It’s identifying a new, often hazy, opportunity that might lead to the next big thing.”
The future is now
Creating the future can often mean putting in the work today. With that in mind Murphy, who holds a strong personal belief that innovation is a “contact sport”, explained that FCAT is highly active within Ireland’s start-up community and beyond.
“We also work very actively with academia,” he said. “We work with other companies. We work across multiple different industries. And that’s about bringing together multiple parts of our ecosystem here in Ireland to help elevate the country and help elevate innovation in the region.”
And it is a diverse team that enables FCAT to create a cross-collaborative ecosystem of innovation.
Murphy said: “We hire everything from really, really deep-tech engineers, a lot of PhDs in areas like quantum computing and blockchain and so on, but also artists, a lot of design thinkers, a lot of human experience designers. And that friction that you get from different perspectives in the same conversation is a huge part of what we use to unlock opportunity.”
So, how do you innovate for a future in which the answers and sometimes even the questions being asked are unclear?
Murphy said: “Technology is always moving and it’s important that we don’t remain rigid, that we have our eye on what’s coming next all of the time. We have very much a learning mentality and we are very much about experimenting with what’s possible.”
This commitment to a mentality of curiosity, always challenging the status quo as Murphy puts it, is a “very common trait” often found in FCAT’s associates, who prioritise continuous learning and improvement.
“You can’t afford to stay still,” he said. “That’s comfort. Asking ‘but why?’ and ‘why not?’ are important traits that we encourage everywhere in the firm. That ability to challenge the boundaries and push forward is encouraged.”

Mark Wahlberg has started companies of his own and backed plenty of others. But the gym he’s opening in December, he says, has him more excited than anything he’s done in his entire career. It also goes after a corner of the market where venture money keeps flowing: pricey, diagnostics-heavy wellness.
Speaking with us at TechCrunch Disrupt in San Francisco on Thursday, the actor said the first Municipal Gym opens in December. It’s a 32,000-square-foot club outside Las Vegas with blood work, epigenetic testing, recovery gear, compression therapy, cold plunges, and a café that serves up protein muffins, among other things. He’s pitching it as the affordable alternative to the longevity clubs that charge tens of thousands of dollars a year for much the same thing.
It’s the second part of a scheme that was, in some ways, first hatched seven years ago, with a casual sportswear line.
The clothing brand Municipal launched during COVID, which Wahlberg volunteers “was not a good idea.” (Clothing was a lousy business to enter in 2020, with retailers from J.Crew to Brooks Brothers going bankrupt.)
It grew out of what he’d been seeing as a celebrity fitness spokesperson. He’d done collabs with various brands, and other companies kept approaching him to be their brand ambassador, but they all seemed to want the same thing, he said. “Everybody just kind of wanted to sell T-shirts and sneakers. And I was like, well, I want to kind of have a bigger impact on people’s lives as a whole.”
By that, he meant what people eat, what supplements they take, how they train, and how they recover. Clothing was just the start. “We figured, okay, we’ll start in the apparel space, and then we’ll build from there.” He says he only takes swings at “things that I’m very passionate about and things that are a direct extension of who I am.”
Even without a pandemic, clothing is a brutal business, as we pointed out, citing Lululemon’s repeated quality-control challenges. But Wahlberg didn’t seem fazed, talking instead about why the gym fits his vision. He thought it “always could be great for the brand” in part because it gives people a place to “actually feel and touch the clothes” before they buy. Besides, he continued, how people exercise is “another big part of people’s lives.”
Most in the space have been laser-focused on the high end. Fountain Life, the longevity company co-founded by Tony Robbins, raised $18 million last year to expand its centers for wealthy clients, and a full subscription runs $21,500 a year, according to reports. The Estate, a company co-founded by Robbins and hospitality executive Sam Nazarian, is still mapping out plans to charge $35,000 memberships to its wellness centers. Equinox is similarly taking names for a $36,000 longevity add-on that it plans to launch atop a traditional gym membership.

Wahlberg says Municipal aims for that same luxury tier but for a lot less. “We have a better price point than our competitors, and we’re going to get far more results,” he said. For $99, he said as an example, members will receive three rounds of blood work and an hour with a doctor to flag what they’re predisposed to. Supplements and hormone therapy are also “right there.”
When we asked whether the gyms double as storefronts for his other products (he owns a supplements brand), he said “kind of.” What he’s really building, he said, is a “health and wellness ecosystem” with “everything there, soup to nuts.”
He didn’t put a number on how many gyms he wants, but he called the growth strategy “aggressive,” telling us that “landlords and developers who toured the Las Vegas site have offered “AAA locations at very favorable terms, with great TI” (tenant-improvement allowances that help pay for the build-out).
Wahlberg’s record in fitness might scare off someone else. We told him we’d recently watched “Wahl Street,” his reality show, in which an early episode shows him getting deeply involved with the fitness chain F45 in 2019, and that we wanted to warn him about what was coming. “How did you know about the pandemic?” he joked, to laughs from the crowd. He bought into the company, known for its 45-minute classes, at a $450 million valuation. It went public in 2021, then was delisted from the NYSE in 2023 after its stock collapsed. Wahlberg said he learned a lot from the experience.

“I think the biggest takeaway was just making sure that I’m involved with people that share the same approach that I do.” He also said he always thought big box was the better model. F45’s classes suit people who are short on time, but he wants members to hang around Municipal for hours. Plenty of gyms run on a “join up but don’t show up” model, he said, adding: “I can’t understand that philosophy.”
The name Municipal is very intentional and clearly means a lot to Wahlberg, who grew up poor in Boston, one of nine kids, playing on public basketball courts and golf courses. “You learn a lot on the blacktop,” he said. “You learn to win, to lose, to compete, and hopefully to get back up and do it again.”
He has never hidden his rough youth. (He was sentenced to two years for assaults as a teenager and served 45 days.)
In fact, earlier in the afternoon on Thursday, surrounded by friends and business associates in a seating area backstage — this is the man who inspired the show “Entourage” after all — he said he was turned around by two people, including Father Jim Flavin, a Boston-area parish priest who has been in Wahlberg’s life since he was 13.

He wants the gyms to carry that same spirit. “It’s a place to work, but have fun and support each other and create community and really challenge people to be better versions of themselves,” he said. It’s personal, he said outright. “I’ve come from next to nothing to being in an amazing position,” Wahlberg said. “I try to constantly remind myself that I can inspire other people growing up in similar situations, especially inner-city kids and at-risk youth, that there is a way to overcome your circumstances if you’re willing to go out there and do the work.”
At 55, he added, his goals have changed; while he was once focused on looking good, “I just want to feel good when I wake up in the morning,” he said. “I want to be able to conquer all the things that I have planned for the day.”
He also said his plate is exceedingly full right now, between the gym, a film role as Pete Rose, and his daughter’s equestrian career. He’s so eager for the gym to open, he said, that visiting the construction site feels like “literally watching paint dry.” Indeed, asked if he was open to taking on new ventures, he shrugged. “I’m not out there hunting, looking for the next thing for sure.” But he wouldn’t rule it out, he added quickly. “If something amazing were to come along, obviously I wouldn’t turn it down.”
