How scared should we be about AI and bioweapons?

AI will be the death of me. And you. And everyone we know.

At least, this is what a growing number of technologists and policymakers fear.

Last week, a lead researcher at Anthropic declared that there was a greater than 10 percent chance of AI “killing all humans” within the next decade. This nerve-racking forecast, combined with recent AI-initiated cyberattacks, have fueled calls for slowing the progress of artificial intelligence — a proposal that Anthropic and OpenAI subsequently embraced.

Not all prophets of AI doom agree about precisely how this apocalypse would come about. Many focus on scenarios reminiscent of The Terminator films, in which superintelligent machines conspire to exterminate humanity — perhaps in the same not-quite-intentional way that humans laid waste to the dodo, or passenger pigeon.

But there is another, arguably more intuitive way that AI could bring about mass death, if not human extinction: by making it easier for people to develop and deploy catastrophic bioweapons.

Importantly, this hypothetical doesn’t require AI models to become conscious or superintelligent; it merely requires them to accelerate preexisting trends in biotechnology.

For those alarmed by this hypothetical, the threat AI poses is essentially twofold. First, when combined with technological progress in gene editing and DNA synthesis, chatbots could vastly increase the number of people capable of assembling dangerous viruses already known to medical science. And the more potential bioengineers there are in the world, the higher the odds that one will prove to be a diligent psychopath.

Second, AI could help highly trained biologists to discover — or engineer — a custom supervirus, which could then fall into the wrong hands.

Recent headlines have lent some credence to both of these fears.

Earlier this year, biologists warned that, with a few simple prompts, they’d gotten chatbots to dispense detailed instructions for engineering a treatment-resistant strain of an infamous pathogen, step-by-step protocols for recreating a once-pandemic virus, and advice on dispersing biological payloads via weather balloon.

In August, a team of scientists revealed that an AI model trained on DNA sequences had generated blueprints for deadly viruses unseen in nature (albeit, viruses deadly to bacteria, not animals). And last week, Anthropic announced that it had thwarted several suspected attempts by state actors to use Claude for bioweapons research.

Precisely how much AI is increasing the risk of an artificial pandemic is unclear. Even before ChatGPT, advances in synthetic biology were already making bioengineering tools more potent and accessible. And even after four years of rapid AI progress, the technical barriers to engineering novel superviruses remain formidable.

Regardless, there is a great deal more that governments can — and should — be doing to protect us from synthetic pandemics, both manmade and natural. No matter what AI’s ultimate impact on biosecurity proves to be, now is the time to both prepare for the worst-case scenario and, ideally, preempt it.

Why synthetic superviruses are scary

Before we dig into how AI could raise the risk of a man-made pandemic, it’s worth spelling out why that prospect is so unnerving.

Put simply, few things could more credibly destroy civilization — and/or, the human species — than a synthetic supervirus.

Infectious diseases have killed more humans than any other force on Earth. The Black Death wiped out at least 30 percent of all Europeans in the 1300s, while the 1918 flu killed 50 million people worldwide. You don’t need me to tell you what things were like in 2020 (or how much worse they could have been, if vaccines hadn’t been rolled out in record time).

And nature kicked off these catastrophes without even trying. A bioterrorist consciously seeking to maximize human death could theoretically improve on evolution’s handiwork. If biotech continues to advance — and scientists identify viral genomes that reliably yield high transmissibility and lethality — a malicious actor might one day be able to manufacture a virus that’s both as contagious as measles and as deadly as Ebola.

Natural selection generally disfavors viruses that are both highly transmissible and profoundly fatal; bugs that kill their hosts too reliably often have difficulty spreading. Yet a virus with a long asymptomatic period could escape this tradeoff. For example, HIV can live in a person’s body for a decade before generating noticeable symptoms. In theory, a highly contagious respiratory virus could similarly lie in wait for many weeks, months, or even years.

If bioterrorists ever managed to unleash an easily transmitted, highly fatal virus, they could shake the foundations of modern existence. In that scenario, reliably showing up for work might require accepting a 50-50 chance of getting yourself — and your family — brutally killed. Covid never required essential workers to assume risks anywhere near this high (the virus had a less than 1 percent case fatality rate among prime-age workers, before vaccines became available). Although there are many heroes among us, plenty of doctors, nurses, warehouse workers, power plant technicians, delivery drivers, and other essential laborers might not tolerate a coin flip’s chance of wiping out their loved ones. And if enough sheltered in place, systems for producing and distributing healthcare, food, water, and power could swiftly break down.

Humanity’s “Joker” problem

All this invites the question: Who would ever want to do this?

After all, viruses are terrible weapons: They’re difficult to make, impossible to control, and jeopardize the lives of those who cultivate and distribute them. Partly for these reasons, biological weapons have hardly ever been used; the last fatal bioterror attacks were the anthrax mailings of 2001.

To this, anxious biosecurity experts might reply, to quote the former British intelligence officer Alfred Pennyworth: “Some men just want to watch the world burn.”

Mass shooters regularly forfeit their lives to the cause of killing others at random. And brilliant iconoclasts periodically develop murderous ideologies; Ted Kaczynski, the Harvard mathematician turned Unabomber, wished to bring about the collapse of industrial civilization.

And every once in a while, an aspiring supervillain gets graduate training in virology. In the 1990s, the Kyoto University-educated genetic engineer Seiichi Endo joined Japan’s Aum Shinrikyo death cult. Drawing on the group’s $1 billion in funds, Endo sought to weaponize Ebola, Q fever, botulinum, and anthrax — with the aim of killing as many nonbelievers as possible.

Of course, Endo failed. And lone wolf psychopaths have never gotten their hands on anything more lethal than an assault weapon, bomb, or airplane.

But some scientists believe that technological advances — including generative AI — may provide the Endos and Kaczynskis of tomorrow with catastrophic power.

How AI and biotech could democratize bioterrorism

MIT biologist Kevin Esvelt is among his field’s most prominent Cassandras. And he has voiced two fundamental concerns. The first is that breakthroughs in synthetic biology and AI are rapidly expanding the pool of people who can engineer known viruses.

Over the past 15 years, the cost and difficulty of editing genomes have plummeted. In 2012, to modify a specific site in a genome, you often needed access to custom-engineered proteins that cost upward of $5,000 and still tended to work poorly, according to Olivia Scharfman, a biotechnology fellow at the Institute for Progress. Thanks to the gene-editing tool CRISPR, a scientist with minimal lab training can execute such a modification for as little as $30. Meanwhile, DNA synthesis has also grown radically more affordable.

This might not be such a big deal, if dangerous biological materials were hard to legally access. But Esvelt and his colleagues recently demonstrated that this isn’t the case. As an experiment, they had a student place orders for pieces of the 1918 influenza genome using a pseudonym and fake position. Thirty-six of 38 DNA synthesis companies shipped the genomes without asking whether the applicant had government permission or sound intentions. Together, these fragments were enough to create the virus many times over.

Crucially, in Esvelt’s account, reverse engineering known viruses using modern tools does not require elite skills. Any random biology graduate student may be up to the job.

And AI may be making such rudimentary viral engineering even easier.

In theory, a chatbot can help you plan a bioweapons attack in much the same way that it can walk you through fixing a dishwasher: By finding and synthesizing the internet’s vast trove of information, offering step-by-step instructions for navigating unfamiliar challenges, and fielding all troubleshooting queries that might subsequently arise.

And there’s evidence that AI models will in fact provide would-be bioterrorists with precisely this kind of assistance.

In a 2023 study, MIT researchers asked students to seek guidance on engineering a pandemic from that era’s chatbots. Within an hour, the AI models had suggested four promising pathogens, offered detailed protocols for manufacturing them with with synthetic DNA, provided a list of DNA synthesis retailers with low screening standards, and advised that — if users still found themselves unable to make the virus, even with all this help — they could purchase the assistance of a contract research organization to do some of the bioengineering for them.

And of course, frontier models have gotten a lot better since 2023. Last year, SecureBio, Esvelt’s biosecurity nonprofit, found that one OpenAI model outperformed 94 percent of expert virologists on troubleshooting complex laboratory problems.

Anthropic’s internal research has produced similar results. In one experiment, the company tasked amateurs with drafting a bioweapons acquisition plan. It gave some participants access to basic internet resources and others the assistance of Claude models (with the safeguards turned off). Those working with AI developed far more viable blueprints, according to the biodefense experts who scrutinized the proposals for critical errors.

Thus, there’s reason to think that the number of people with the skills and resources necessary for reverse engineering a virus from genomic blueprints is sharply rising — and with it, the risk that a bloodthirsty nihilist or ideologue gets their hands on a dangerous pathogen.

AI might help scientists learn too much

What’s even worse than bringing back smallpox? Esvelt’s second concern is that these same technological forces — combined with top scientists’ often reckless ambitions — will lead to the discovery or development of a supervirus, a new or custom-designed pathogen even more dangerous than what nature has come up with in the past.

Today, some scientists are actively trying to discover — and publicly identify — novel viruses circulating in nature that could theoretically trigger the next pandemic. Others conduct so-called gain-of-function experiments, altering pathogens to discern which mutations make them more transmissible, lethal, or difficult to detect (some have alleged that Covid-19 emerged from precisely this kind of research, though that theory is widely rejected among epidemiologists). This work is generally intended to anticipate future epidemiological threats, so that we can develop vaccines before they arrive. But their work could inadvertently provide bad actors with recipes for reverse engineering mass-casualty bioweapons.

Separately, advances in gene editing and AI may enable breakthroughs in viral engineering that yield apocalyptic pathogens.

A recent study from researchers at Stanford and the Arc Institute fed such fears. The scientists trained an AI called “Evo” on the DNA sequences of bacteriophages, the simple viruses that infect bacteria. They then used this “genomic language model” to generate blueprints for hundreds of bacteriophages found nowhere in nature. Sixteen of these designs yielded viable pathogens, some of which were better at killing bacteria than their natural ancestors.

What is clear, however, is that novel pathogens are among the greatest security threats our species faces.

Theoretically, scientists may one day be able to engineer novel human viruses using the same basic techniques. What’s more, even if genomic-language models fail at that task, they might still be able to help users tweak existing viruses in ways that render them more transmissible, deadly, or vaccine-resistant.

These discoveries could theoretically filter down to amateur bioterrorists or well-funded extremist groups like Aum Shinrikyo. Alternatively, a state-sponsored weapons program could develop a catastrophic supervirus, then unleash it on the world through a lab leak or (perhaps, more improbably) a deliberate attempt at genocide.

There is some precedent for the former scenario: The Soviet Union tried to weaponize smallpox and the Marburg virus, despite the considerable hazards and dubious military utility of such bioweapons. In the process, Soviet scientists accidentally triggered a smallpox outbreak during testing, while also letting anthrax leak from a laboratory, killing at least 64 people.

All this said, there are reasons to question whether AI is truly making a synthetic pandemic more likely.

Chatbots may solve some of the challenges facing an amateur biologist with omnicidal aspirations. But it doesn’t necessarily clear the biggest obstacles in that person’s path.

Viral engineering is a complex, difficult, and physical undertaking. Performing it successfully requires what scientists call “tacit knowledge” — practical skills and understandings that are difficult to explain in words: knowing how to suppress the hand tremors that could rip delicate DNA strands, or how to recognize when the DNA in your solution has reached the proper concentration, or how to smell when a sample has been contaminated.

And these are things that Claude still can’t reliably impart. In studies, amateurs with access to a large language model tend to perform better on written biological challenges — but not on actual lab work. In a 2026 randomized study, non-scientists working with frontier AI systems were no more likely to complete a multistep laboratory assignment than those relying on the internet alone.

Of course, tacit knowledge wouldn’t necessarily be a problem for aspiring bioterrorists in the mold of Seiichi Endo — graduate-trained scientists with extensive lab experience. But at a minimum, chatbots don’t appear to have turned every malcontent who once took AP Bio into a competent virologist.

And while AI will likely help top biologists advance their field’s frontiers, the barriers to custom engineering doomsday viruses remain formidable. The “Evo” experiment is arguably a case in point. Although the model did generate working blueprints for a few novel bacteriophages, nearly all of its suggested genomes didn’t work. Researchers had to arduously test hundreds of DNA sequences to arrive at 16 viable strands. And engineering slightly modified versions of an extremely small, well-known bacteriophage capable of infecting E. coli in a lab — and creating a novel virus more fearsome than any nature has yet devised — aren’t especially similar tasks.

To offer a strained analogy: The fact that I can dunk on Victor Wembanyama in NBA 2K26 does not imply that I’m making progress toward being able to dunk on him in real life.

Even in the age of CRISPR and ChatGPT, biology remains an exceptionally difficult discipline that resists reliable modeling. The effects of modifying a single gene can often yield unpredictable and inconsistent results, varying with host biology, immune responses, and environmental conditions that scientists only partly understand. AI may help us overcome these complexities. It also might not.

We need to be preparing for the next pandemic

Scientists disagree about how serious a risk synthetic pandemics pose — and how much AI is magnifying it.

What is clear, however, is that novel pathogens are among the greatest security threats our species faces. Even if synthetic biology and artificial intelligence did not exist, natural selection would keep churning out new viruses — and periodically hitting upon ones that befuddle human immune systems.

For this reason, there would be an urgent need to make our societies less vulnerable to future pandemics, irrespective of AI’s implications for viral engineering. In a world where chatbots and CRISPR are plausibly making bioterrorism easier, failing to invest aggressively in public health is all the more reckless.

The good news is we already know — from hard-earned experience — many steps that we can take to reduce the risk of a new pandemic and prepare to respond to one if needed.

Governments can limit the destructive power of novel contagions by investing in vaccines that protect against entire families of viruses (or ideally, all of them) and broad-spectrum antivirals; raise our odds of catching outbreaks early by funding meticulous wastewater and clinical surveillance; ensure that essential workers don’t have to choose between staying alive and keeping civilization going amid a pandemic by developing and then stockpiling foolproof personal protective equipment; make indoor spaces less hospitable to airborne viruses by upgrading ventilation and filtration systems; and reduce the the threat of bioterrorism by mandating rigorous screening of synthetic-DNA orders.

Fears that humanity will be done in by superintelligent machines are currently galvanizing media attention and political concern. And this may be warranted. But we should pay at least as much attention to our species’ age-old, organic adversaries as we do to our hypothetical, robot ones — and not just because the latter could start teaching the former new tricks.

How to Configure a Proxy on Windows, Mac & Firefox

To configure a proxy correctly, first get the proxy address or hostname, port if required, and any setup script, bypass rules, or credentials you were given. Then configure either the operating system or Firefox itself, depending on which applications should use the proxy.

Before You Configure a Proxy

A proxy setting is only useful if you know what kind of configuration you were given. Before changing anything, collect the connection details and record your current settings so you can restore them if the connection stops working.

Warning

Write down or screenshot your current proxy settings before changing them. A wrong server address, port, setup script, or bypass rule can stop affected applications from reaching the internet.

Prerequisites

  • The proxy server hostname or IP address and port if you are configuring the proxy manually.
  • The proxy auto-configuration (PAC) URL if your administrator or provider uses an automatic setup script.
  • Any required proxy username and password if the service uses authentication.
  • Any hostnames, domains, or local addresses that should bypass the proxy.
  • Administrator guidance if the device is managed by a workplace, school, or other organization and the controls are locked.

A PAC file is a proxy auto-configuration file that contains rules for deciding when traffic should use a proxy and which proxy should be selected. If you were given only a PAC URL, do not invent a manual server address and port.

The choice between a PAC file and manual proxy configuration depends on whether the proxy rules should be selected automatically or remain fixed to a particular endpoint.

Decide Where to Configure the Proxy

Before opening any settings screen, decide whether the proxy should apply through the operating system or only inside Firefox.

Proxy decision tree branches from app needs to Multiple Apps and System Proxy or One Browser and Firefox Only.

Use the Windows or macOS system proxy when compatible applications should inherit the operating system’s proxy settings. Not every application is required to honor those settings, so system-level configuration should not be described as affecting every program automatically.

Firefox can either inherit the operating system’s proxy configuration or use its own connection settings. Mozilla currently provides a Use system proxy settings option alongside automatic detection, manual proxy configuration, and a PAC URL option.

Understanding how proxy servers route traffic helps explain why changing the system proxy can affect several compatible applications while a Firefox-only configuration can remain limited to the browser.

The difference between a system proxy and browser proxy matters whenever different applications need different network routes.

Proxy configuration is also separate from VPN configuration. If you are deciding between the two technologies rather than simply entering proxy settings, proxy and VPN routing work differently even though both can change the public IP address a destination sees.

How to Configure a Proxy on Windows 10 or 11

Microsoft currently places Windows proxy controls under Settings → Network & internet → Proxy. Windows supports automatic detection, a setup script, and manual proxy configuration.

  1. Open Windows Proxy settings. Open Settings, select Network & internet, then select Proxy.
  2. Choose the setup method you were given. Use Automatically detect settings only when the network is designed to provide proxy settings automatically. Use Use setup script when you were given a script address. Use Manual proxy setup when you were given a fixed server name or IP address and, where required, a port.
  3. Configure a setup script if required. Next to Use setup script, select Set up, turn on Use setup script, enter the script address exactly as supplied, then select Save.
  4. Configure the proxy manually if required. Under Manual proxy setup, select Set up next to Use a proxy server. Turn the option on, enter the proxy server name or IP address, enter the port if required, then continue with any exceptions you were given.
  5. Add exceptions if needed. Enter websites that should bypass the proxy in the exception list. Microsoft documents semicolon-separated entries and supports wildcard endings such as *.example.com. Use the local-address bypass option only when that matches your network requirements.
  6. Save the configuration. Select Save, then test the applications that are expected to use the Windows proxy.

Microsoft’s current Windows proxy documentation confirms these setup methods and notes that a proxy used specifically by a VPN connection must be configured separately.

How to Configure a Proxy on macOS

Current macOS versions configure proxies per network service. Apple provides automatic discovery, PAC configuration, HTTP, HTTPS, and SOCKS proxy options.

  1. Open the network service settings. Choose Apple menu → System Settings, select Network, then choose the network service you are using, such as Wi-Fi or Ethernet.
  2. Open the proxy controls. Select Details, then select Proxies.
  3. Choose the proxy type. Enable only the method you were instructed to use. Apple’s current options include Auto proxy discovery, Automatic proxy configuration, Web proxy (HTTP), Secure web proxy (HTTPS), and SOCKS proxy.
  4. Enter the connection details. For HTTP, HTTPS, or SOCKS, enter the server address and port supplied to you. If the proxy requires authentication, turn on Proxy server requires password and enter the supplied username and password.
  5. Enter the PAC URL if you use automatic configuration. When Automatic proxy configuration is selected, enter the PAC file address in the URL field instead of inventing a manual server address.
  6. Set bypass rules if required. Use Exclude simple hostnames or Bypass proxy settings for these hosts & domains only when your network instructions require those destinations to connect without the proxy.
  7. Review and test the settings. Review the proxy entries you enabled, then test the network service and applications expected to use them.

Apple’s current macOS proxy settings documentation confirms the System Settings path, supported proxy types, authentication fields, PAC configuration, and bypass controls.

How to Configure a Proxy in Firefox

Firefox can inherit the operating system’s proxy settings or use a separate browser-specific configuration. Mozilla’s current support page shows both legacy and newer navigation wording, so the exact labels can differ by Firefox version.

  1. Open Firefox Settings. Open the Firefox menu and select Settings.
  2. Open the proxy settings area. On newer layouts, select Privacy & Security, find Connection and software security, open Advanced settings, then find Proxy settings and select Configure proxy. On versions that still show the older layout, Firefox may place the same controls under General → Network Settings.
  3. Choose how Firefox should connect. Select No proxy, Auto-detect proxy settings for this network, Use system proxy settings, Manual proxy configuration, or Automatic proxy configuration URL according to the setup you actually need.
  4. Enter manual proxy details if required. Under Manual proxy configuration, enter the proxy hostname and port supplied to you. If the same proxy should also be used for HTTPS, enable Firefox’s option to reuse that proxy for HTTPS.
  5. Enter the PAC URL if required. Select Automatic proxy configuration URL, enter the supplied PAC location, then reload the configuration if needed.
  6. Add Firefox bypass entries if required. Use No Proxy For for hostnames or IP addresses that should bypass Firefox’s proxy. Mozilla documents as a way to bypass simple hostnames that do not contain periods.
  7. Apply the setting and test Firefox. Save or close the connection settings as presented by your Firefox version, then load a normal website and any destination that is expected to behave differently through the proxy.

How to Verify the Proxy Is Working

Saving a proxy setting only confirms that the configuration was stored. Verification means checking that the browser or applications you intended to route through the proxy still connect correctly and that any authentication or bypass behavior matches the configuration you were given.

Verify the result

  • Open a normal website in the application or browser that should use the proxy and confirm that it loads.
  • If the proxy requires authentication, confirm that the expected login succeeds and does not enter a repeated credential-prompt loop.
  • If you configured a bypass rule for a destination you can test safely, confirm that the destination remains reachable with the rule in place.
  • If Firefox is set to Use system proxy settings, confirm that Firefox still connects when the operating-system proxy is enabled and stops inheriting that behavior when Firefox is switched to a separate setting.
  • If connectivity fails immediately after enabling the proxy, restore the previous proxy configuration. If connectivity returns, investigate the proxy details before changing unrelated network settings.

These checks confirm basic connectivity and configuration behavior. They do not prove that every application on the device is using the same route, because some applications may ignore system proxy settings or use their own networking configuration.

If the Proxy Breaks Your Connection

Start with the proxy change itself. A full network reset is unnecessary when the problem began immediately after entering a wrong proxy address, port, PAC URL, credential, or bypass rule.

Nothing loads after enabling the proxy

Recheck the server name or IP address, port, and proxy type against the information you were given. If you entered a manual proxy when you should have used a PAC URL, or selected the wrong protocol, restore the previous setting and correct the configuration. An unavailable proxy server can also stop affected traffic.

Only some websites fail

Check the bypass or exception list first. A hostname may be bypassing the proxy when it should not, or a required local destination may be going through the proxy incorrectly. The destination itself can also reject the proxy connection independently of your local settings.

The browser repeatedly asks for proxy credentials

Confirm that the username and password belong to the proxy service rather than a website account. Repeated prompts can indicate rejected credentials or an authentication method that the current proxy arrangement cannot complete. On an organization-managed connection, ask the administrator before repeatedly changing credentials.

The PAC configuration does not apply

Recheck the PAC URL for typing errors and confirm that the configuration file is reachable from the network you are using. In Firefox, use the current automatic proxy configuration option and reload the configuration when needed. Do not replace a PAC setup with a guessed manual server unless your administrator or provider supplies one.

Firefox behaves differently from other applications

Check whether Firefox is set to Use system proxy settings or to its own manual or PAC configuration. Firefox’s connection settings can also show extensions that control how the browser connects to the internet, so disable or review such an extension only when it is actually responsible for the connection behavior.

More advanced proxy connection errors may require diagnosing authentication, DNS behavior, PAC rules, application inheritance, or organization-managed policy separately.

On Windows 11, if turning off the proxy does not restore normal connectivity, the issue may extend beyond the proxy setting. The broader Wi-Fi connected but no internet access troubleshooting path covers other Windows network causes.

How to Turn the Proxy Off

Windows

Return to Settings → Network & internet → Proxy. Turn off the manual proxy or setup script you enabled. If the network normally uses automatic detection, restore that option to its previous state rather than changing multiple settings at once.

macOS

Return to System Settings → Network → [network service] → Details → Proxies. Disable the proxy types you enabled and restore the previous configuration. If the Mac normally uses a PAC file or automatic discovery, restore that setting instead of simply clearing every proxy option.

Firefox

Return to Firefox’s proxy settings. Select No proxy if Firefox should connect without a proxy, or select Use system proxy settings if Firefox should follow the operating system again.

Bottom Line

The safest proxy setup starts by choosing the correct configuration layer. Use the Windows or macOS system proxy when compatible applications should inherit the operating-system settings, and configure Firefox directly only when the browser needs separate proxy behavior.

Keep the original settings, enter only the server, port, PAC URL, credentials, and bypass rules you were actually given, then verify the result before changing anything else. If connectivity fails, undo the proxy change first rather than escalating immediately to a full network reset.

Rust is Now a 'Tier One' Language at Microsoft

When Microsoft’s developers and engineers sit down to code, they can now choose to work in Rust, which Redmond has added to its list of canonical languages. “Rust now is a Tier One language at Microsoft, and that just means that it sits among C++, C# and TypeScript as the best supported languages for internal development in the company,” explained Victor Ciura, Microsoft principal engineer for the Rust tooling team, during a keynote talk today at this year’s annual RustConf, being held this week in Montréal. Ciura said Microsoft has “paved a path” of tools and processes that support local Rust development across the entire software development lifecycle.

Rust is no stranger at Microsoft and is already present in over 100 Microsoft project repositories. The company has built Oxidizer, a set of crates to build scalable services in Rust, which have been used to build and refine the Microsoft 365 core services such as Outlook, Word, Excel, OneDrive, and SharePoint. The Copilot tech stack also owes quite a bit to Rust… [C]ompany engineers built rustc_codegen_utc, a custom Rust compiler code-generation backend that wires the rustc compiler directly into the Microsoft Visual C++ internal toolchain for Windows… “The result is a unified code generation platform for Rust and C++ on Windows” [Ciura wrote in a blog post, noting that more than 100 Microsoft project repositories now build with rustc_codegen_utc.]

Still, Redmond running towards Rust is a welcome development. In his 2025 RustConf keynote, Microsoft Azure CTO Mark Russinovich noted that ~70 percent of Windows CVEs are memory issues.
“One of the things that I realized a long time ago is that no matter how much we really want to make C and C++ better, we can’t make it as good as what Rust starts with,” he said.

Cayin HA-1A MK3 Packs 2.7 Watts of Pure Tube Class A Into a Compact Headphone Amp

CanJam SoCal 2026 offered another reminder that personal audio has developed a rather elastic definition of “reasonable.” We listened to headphone systems approaching $57,000, while new amplifiers from Feliks Audio, Layer Audio Design and others demonstrated just how far manufacturers are willing to push dedicated headphone amplification.

Cayin is heading in the opposite direction with the new HA-1A MK3, the smallest member of its HA-series of tube headphone amplifiers.

Rather than combining a DAC, streamer, touchscreen and enough menu options to require a weekend seminar, the HA-1A MK3 is an old-school analog headphone amplifier built around a pure vacuum-tube, single-ended Class A circuit.

And that simplicity may be its strongest selling point.

The amplifier uses two JJ 12AU7/ECC82 tubes for voltage amplification and a pair of Electro-Harmonix EL84EH/6BQ5 output tubes. Cayin also uses custom-designed output transformers, point-to-point internal wiring and separate power supplies for the voltage and power-amplification stages.

Small Box, Serious Tube Amplifier

At only 240 x 240 x 140mm (9.4 x 9.4 x 5.5 inches), the HA-1A MK3 occupies considerably less desktop real estate than many high-end tube amplifiers.

Do not mistake small for lightweight.

The transformers and metal chassis push its weight to 8.8kg, or roughly 19.4 pounds, which is substantial for something that takes up only about 9.4 inches in each direction.

Cayin provides both a 6.35mm headphone output and 4-pin XLR headphone output, along with selectable Low and High impedance settings. Low covers headphones from 8 to 150 ohms, while High is intended for models between 151 and 600 ohms.

That significantly broadens the potential headphone roster compared with traditional OTL tube amplifiers, which generally make the most sense with higher-impedance dynamic headphones.

The international launch materials rate output through the 4-pin XLR connection at up to 2,700mW + 2,700mW. Cayin’s current German product page lists 2,800mW + 2,800mW and 2,500mW + 2,500mW through the 6.35mm output, so there appears to be a minor regional specification discrepancy that Cayin will hopefully clarify before U.S. shipments begin.

There is also an important distinction regarding that XLR connection. Cayin describes it as a balanced headphone output, but the amplifier itself is specified as a single-ended Class A design. A 4-pin XLR connector should therefore not automatically be interpreted as evidence of a fully differential internal amplifier topology.

More Than a Headphone Amp

The HA-1A MK3 also includes two pairs of RCA inputs and a dedicated RCA preamplifier output, allowing it to control active loudspeakers or an external power amplifier.

Preamp gain is rated at 9dB with a maximum 5V output.

That makes the Cayin considerably more useful in a small desktop or two-channel system where the headphone amplifier might also serve as the analog control center.

An ALPS volume potentiometer, approximately 50-second delayed startup, automatic muting circuit and removable tube cage round out the package.

There is no DAC, Bluetooth or network streaming.

Good.

We already own enough products desperately trying to become computers.

The Competition

The Feliks Audio Echo Vibe ($1,095) remains one of our favorite affordable tube headphone amplifiers, but its OTL architecture and 350mW output make it a very different proposition. It is particularly compelling with high-impedance dynamic headphones, whereas the Cayin’s transformers, selectable impedance ranges and substantially greater output power should make it suitable for a broader selection of headphones.

At $1,499, the Layer Audio Design GEN-300B features a single-ended Class A 300B circuit and can drive both headphones and efficient loudspeakers with up to 10 watts per channel through its speaker outputs. It is more ambitious as an integrated amplifier, but also considerably larger and heavier.

The Cayin occupies an interesting space between them.

It delivers a traditional transformer-coupled tube circuit, meaningful headphone output, wide impedance compatibility and preamp functionality without turning a desktop headphone system into a piece of living-room furniture.

Will California Gut Its Net Neutrality Law to Comply with Trump Admin Demands?

In 2021, America approved $65 billion to fund broadband internet services as part of President Biden’s Bipartisan Infrastructure Law. But Trump’s administration announced they’d withhold funds from states with net neutrality protections…

States could object and sue the government, Ars Technica reported last October, “but even a successful lawsuit could take years and leave unserved homes without broadband for the foreseeable future.” So where does that leave California’s net neutrality laws? Ars Technica asks. California expect to spend about $1.4 billion to deploy broadband to 270,571 locations…

Similar to federal net neutrality rules repealed during the first Trump administration, California’s law prohibits ISPs from blocking or throttling lawful traffic and says ISPs may not require fees from websites or online services to deliver or prioritize their traffic to Internet users. While the first Trump administration lost its attempt to preempt state net neutrality laws, the second Trump administration is trying to achieve a similar result by making federal broadband money conditional on whether states agree not to enforce net neutrality…

California and Illinois are the only states that haven’t finalized their funding, according to the BEAD progress dashboard maintained by the National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA)… California could try to continue enforcing its net neutrality law even while accepting the federal funding, a strategy that would involve another long court battle over its right to regulate broadband providers. This would be difficult, as the Trump administration is requiring states that accept grant funding to commit that they won’t enforce net neutrality rules… [N]early 30 advocacy groups that focus on access to technology are treating the vote as a significant milestone and urged state leaders to defend California’s net neutrality law in a letter yesterday…

Winning a court battle would become much more difficult after the state accepts the money [according to Paul Goodman, legal counsel for the Center for Accessible Technology]. Goodman said the CPUC should delay the vote and that California should file a lawsuit arguing that the NTIA-imposed condition is illegal. In addition to net neutrality, Goodman said California may be giving up other regulatory authority over companies, like AT&T and Verizon, because the NTIA requirement forbids rate regulation and “utility-style rules on broadband Internet service” in general… Goodman said the exemption from state laws would last for up to 14 years. This is because ISPs receiving grants would have four years to deploy the required broadband networks, and the extended period of performance lasts another 10 years… AT&T is already trying to get out of state obligations related to its basic phone service in California, as we’ve reported… [Also at stake is whether “ISPs themselves get to pick the price of the mandated low-cost broadband offerings,” the article points out.]

The letter from 30 advocacy groups to California state leaders argues accepting the money “would set a dangerous precedent for the federal government to use federal funding as a cudgel that forces states in line with its agenda… If California were to allow this funding to be used as leverage, there is no telling what other resources the administration would confidently seek to exploit.”

Thursday California’s Public Utility Commission did vote to approve the plan, but a spokesperson earlier told Ars Technica their vote “does not address subgrantee agreements, or the conditions the NTIA requires be included in subgrantee agreements.”

The best Android apps in 2026: I spent months testing dozens that truly earn their keep

A good Android app should earn its place on your phone. It might make an everyday task easier, handle something the built-in software can’t, or let you change an experience that never quite worked for you.

These 20 apps cover everything from quick notes and password management to automation and local file sharing. Some are free, others charge for advanced features, and a few take some effort to figure out. The point isn’t to install them all. It’s to find the ones that make your phone work better for you.

The starter kit

To pick the apps listed below, I started with a category-wise breakdown of apps that an average person runs into on a day-to-day basis. Subsequently, I narrowed down my picks based on average Google Play Store ratings, developer trust, and the general consensus on the reliability (and feature set) of an app based on real-human feedback across social resources like Reddit and official community forums.

In order to test these apps, I installed them on my Pixel 10a, running the latest build of Android 17. All the apps tested were installed from the Google Play Store with the latest update available at the time of writing in September of 2026. I signed in using my personal Google account, and wherever applicable, a separate service account linked to my Play Store log-in to access the full set of features.

Remembering what you need to do is one problem. Finding time to do it is another. TickTick combines task lists, recurring reminders, calendar planning, and habit tracking, so your commitments and schedule live in the same place.

The integrated calendar is especially handy when you’re trying to fit tasks around meetings and appointments. You can keep track of recurring household chores alongside larger projects without juggling separate apps.

Basic task management is free, while Premium unlocks advanced calendar functionality and removes certain organizational limits. It’s more involved than a basic notes app, but that extra structure makes sense when a simple checklist no longer cuts it.

Google Keep – Best for capturing quick notes

Sometimes you just need somewhere to write something down before it disappears from your brain. Google Keep handles notes, checklists, voice memos, and photos without asking you to build an elaborate organizational system first.

Its Android widgets are particularly convenient. You can keep a shopping list or frequently used note on your home screen instead of opening the app every time you need it.

Notion – Best for organizing projects and information

When your notes start turning into projects, reference materials, and sprawling collections of information, Notion gives you somewhere to organize the lot. You can build connected pages, documents, databases, and shared workspaces for everything from research to collaborative projects.

The Android app lets you access those workspaces away from your computer. Editing a complicated database on a small screen can be cumbersome, though, so it’s better suited to checking information and making smaller updates.

The free plan limits individual file uploads to 5MB. Offline access also takes preparation: you can download pages, but their subpages don’t automatically come along for the ride. Paid plans offer additional offline conveniences.

There’s plenty of flexibility, provided you’re willing to spend some time setting things up.

The best AI apps for Android

ChatGPT – Best for everyday AI assistance

ChatGPT can help when you’re trying to make sense of something unfamiliar, untangle an idea, or get a first draft onto the page.

Its Android app supports conversational assistance, voice interaction, and image-related capabilities. You might use it to understand an error message, reorganize a document, or prepare questions before a meeting. It’s also useful for exploring different approaches when you aren’t sure where to begin.

You can use ChatGPT for free, although paid plans offer different usage allowances and additional capabilities.

There’s one important catch: a confident answer isn’t necessarily a correct one. Factual claims, references, and important advice still need checking, particularly when the consequences of getting something wrong are significant.

Google Gemini – Best for Android-integrated AI assistance

Google Gemini can take over as your phone’s primary digital assistant, bringing AI assistance into supported Android functions and Google services. Our guide to using Gemini on Android  explains how to make the switch.

Depending on your device and account, that means you can use it for supported phone functions and tasks involving connected Google services. Its appeal is having an assistant that works with parts of your phone rather than one you primarily open for a separate conversation.

Gemini offers free access, with additional capabilities available through paid Google AI plans. Exactly what’s available depends on your device, region, account, and subscription.

Before replacing Google Assistant, check whether Gemini supports the functions you regularly use. Some Assistant voice features still aren’t available through Gemini, and losing a familiar shortcut can be more annoying than gaining a new AI feature is useful.

The best privacy and security apps

Bitwarden – Best for managing passwords and passkeys

Bitwarden takes care of the password problem: generating complicated credentials, storing them in an encrypted vault, and helping fill them in across supported apps and websites. It also supports passkeys as more services move toward passwordless sign-in.

The free personal plan includes password management and synchronization across devices. You can access your credentials on both your Android phone and computer without paying for a personal subscription, while paid plans add further capabilities. Autofill isn’t perfect everywhere. Some Android apps and websites may still require manual intervention, and you’ll need to protect access to your vault itself. Even so, it’s considerably more manageable than trying to remember a different password for every account.

Signal – Best for private messaging

Signal puts end-to-end encryption at the center of its messaging experience. You can send individual and group messages, make voice or video calls, and share media, with supported conversation content protected from being read by intermediaries.

It also supports usernames, so you can connect with people without necessarily sharing your phone number with them. You’ll still need a phone number to register, however. Having a username doesn’t remove that requirement.

Signal is free, although you’ll get more out of it if the people you regularly contact use it too.

And while encryption protects message content, it doesn’t solve every privacy problem. Someone with access to your unlocked phone, for example, presents a different kind of risk.

Proton VPN – Best for VPN connections

Proton VPN offers a free way to encrypt traffic between your phone and a VPN server while changing the IP address websites see. That can be helpful on networks you don’t fully trust or when you need to connect through a different server location.

Unlike free VPN services that impose small monthly data allowances, Proton VPN advertises no data or bandwidth caps on its free plan. You’ll have less control over server selection than a paying subscriber, though. Paid plans provide additional locations and capabilities.

A VPN isn’t an invisibility cloak. Websites can still identify you through account logins and other methods, and you’re placing some trust in the VPN provider. It’s one privacy tool, not a substitute for sensible security habits.

Niagara Launcher – Best for simplifying the Android home screen

Niagara Launcher does away with the conventional grid of home-screen icons in favor of a streamlined layout and an alphabetical app list you navigate by letter.

That makes it easier to reach apps without filling several screens with folders and widgets. The layout is particularly appealing if you prefer using your phone with one hand or have grown tired of hunting through a crowded home screen.

You can use Niagara for free, with more customization available through paid features. Digital Trends has also covered Niagara Launcher’s backup feature , which lets users preserve their home-screen setup when changing phones.

Replacing your default launcher changes a part of the phone you interact with constantly, so expect an adjustment period. Some integrations and behavior can also depend on your device manufacturer.

Tasker is for those moments when you find yourself thinking, “Why can’t my phone just do this automatically?”

The freedom to create your own routines is appealing, but you’ll have to learn how Tasker works before you can make much use of it. It’s a paid app, and newer Android restrictions can complicate certain automations.

Moving a file from your Android phone to a computer shouldn’t require emailing it to yourself. LocalSend offers a simpler route, transferring files directly between devices on a compatible local network.

It supports Android, Windows, macOS, Linux, and iOS. You can use it to move photos to a Windows computer or send a document to a Mac without setting up cloud synchronization.

The core functionality is free, and there’s no need to create an account or upload files to an internet-based storage service.

Both devices need to be on a network that allows them to communicate, however. Restrictive office and public Wi-Fi networks can get in the way.

Solid Explorer offers a trial, followed by a paid in-app unlock for continued full access. Some functionality may require additional purchases.

Your phone’s built-in photo editor can probably handle a crop or quick brightness adjustment. Snapseed gives you more control when you want to spend a little longer getting a photograph right.

Batch editing lets you apply saved looks and adjustments to multiple photos, while non-destructive editing means you can return to earlier changes. Digital Trends also covered the redesigned interface when Snapseed 4.0 arrived on Android  in May 2026.

It’s free, with no subscriptions, in-app purchases, ads, or watermarks advertised in its Google Play listing.

The free version includes design tools and resources, but some templates, assets, and advanced capabilities require payment. Free and premium elements can appear together while you’re browsing, so check what’s included before spending time customizing a design.

Pocket Casts – Best for organizing podcasts

Following several podcasts can leave you with more episodes than you’ll ever get around to listening to. Pocket Casts gives you a dedicated place to manage subscriptions, organize episodes, and control playback.

It also supports Android Auto and Wear OS, so listening doesn’t have to revolve around your phone screen.

Core podcast listening and management are free, while Plus and Patron subscriptions add functionality. If you only listen to the occasional episode through another audio service, a separate podcast app might be more organization than you need.

Poweramp – Best for playing a personal music library

If you’ve kept a collection of music files rather than relying entirely on streaming, Poweramp gives you a dedicated player for them.

It supports numerous audio formats and includes extensive sound adjustments, including an equalizer. You can tailor playback to different headphones and speakers rather than making do with a streaming app’s default sound.

You’ll need to supply your own music, since Poweramp doesn’t come with a subscription catalog.

The app offers a 15-day trial. After that, continued full access requires a paid unlock, making it a different proposition from paying every month for music streaming.

Libby – Best for borrowing ebooks and audiobooks

Before buying another ebook or audiobook, it might be worth checking what your local library has available.

Libby connects eligible cardholders with digital collections from participating libraries. You can borrow ebooks, audiobooks, and, where offered, magazines without purchasing individual titles through the app.

The catch is availability. Your library needs to participate, its catalog determines what you can borrow, and popular books may have waiting lists. Borrowing periods vary, too.

Some features are region-specific. Sending borrowed ebooks to Kindle, for example, is available only in the US.

Libby won’t guarantee immediate access to everything on your reading list, but it can save you money on the titles your library carries.

Waze – Best for driving and traffic updates

Google Maps can get you from one place to another, but Waze puts particular emphasis on what other drivers are reporting along the way.

Community-contributed reports can warn you about traffic, road hazards, incidents, and changing conditions. Waze combines that information with navigation and rerouting, giving you more context about what’s happening on the road.

During a daily commute, an incident report can be helpful before you reach the affected stretch rather than when you’re already stuck in traffic.

Waze is free, although it includes advertising. It’s primarily designed for driving, so Google Maps remains a more versatile option when you need walking, cycling, or public transit directions.

AI Insiders Issue New Warnings – Including Former Anthropic Engineer Jacob Coxon

Neither OpenAI or Anthropic is acting responsibly, warned AI researcher Jacob Coxon when resigning last week from Anthropic. But just hours earlier, OpenAI VP of Research Aidan Clark had posted “For the first time, I am asking myself if things are moving too fast. I’m honestly not sure, but I am sure that it would be good for us to have an answer to ‘What would a successful pace look like?’”

CNN noted Wednesday they’re just some of the many AI insiders who are now concerned about the speed of research. Coxon even wrote that “The people building AI earnestly believe that it could kill us all by the end of the decade. This is not a marketing stunt. If anything, many executives and senior researchers will couch their phrasing in the press to sound sensible — but I hear the same people express fear privately.”

In 10 days since, Coxon’s post has been viewed more than 170 million times, warning that OpenAI and Anthropic are “racing straight to self-improving superintelligence and gambling with our lives.” It’s part of what CNN now calls “pressure on AI companies and governments to do something about the pace of development and safety,” where “much of that pressure is coming from staffers inside the companies.”

One staffer at a top AI company told CNN the fears of how AI could hurt humanity keeps them up at night. Another researcher who recently left a different AI company said it’s a common subject of conversation at parties and social events in Silicon Valley. “You can’t spend more than a few hours in this community without realizing that a very substantial number of people are really pretty worried about these sorts of outcomes,” said the researcher. “A majority would say there’s some chance of it killing everyone….” Dozens of Coxon’s colleagues in the AI industry publicly supported his statements, with some making even more dire predictions… OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and SpaceXAI CEO Elon Musk agreed to Amodei’s proposal to embed independent watchdogs at the AI companies…

“I would burn my equity to the ground in a heartbeat for a 1% higher chance we make it out of this situation alive. I expect a great many of my colleagues across the industry would as well,” wrote Drake Thomas, who works on AI safety at Anthropic. “I promise you, we are actually just f**king scared, it’s not galaxy brained marketing…” AI staffers told CNN that they fear that as AI gets better at training and improving itself, their leverage goes down, prompting today’s urgency. “As we get into this recursive self-improvement loop, I think that might substantially reduce staff’s bargaining power, because frankly, you’ll be able to replace many of the staff with models that can do as good a job,” the researcher who recently left a top AI company said.

Coxon posted Tuesday on X that Anthropic “largely initiated” the race to recursively self-improving AI, justifying it with “a belief in its inevitability.” And then OpenAI “had to shed a bunch of dead weight like Sora,” as he sees it, “because Anthropic was going for the jugular.” (In fact, his specific disagreement with Anthropic’s leadership was whether China and the U.S. could ever negotiate an alternative to their current race towards self-improving AI…)

In an informal “Ask Me Anything”, Coxon responded to a question about when we’d see a Terminator-like malevolent AI by saying that “Skynet could go live in the 2030s if we aren’t careful. ai-2027.com is a modern skynet story written a year ago and it’s on track so far.” Yet while AI development risks an end to humankind, “I do think that if we go slower we can take risk to 0%… But this requires radical action.” He acknowledged there was still a possibility that the steady increases to model intelligence could suddenly plateau, but “They haven’t so far, and it’s just a few more steps up the ladder to hit the finish line.”

To avoid stifling innovation, he recommends “prioritizing applications that actually improve people’s lives [like healthcare discoveries], rather than immediately going for raw economic value or intelligence.” But isn’t mass unemployment a more pressing threat? “Things are coming so fast that unemployment would be a brief preliminary to deadly superintelligence.”

To people who feel disempowered, Coxon offered his solidarity. “I also feel disempowered. Part of resigning was a feeling of hopelessness about the future. I would say — keep your eyes open as things get crazier and advocate for increased transparency into AI companies.”

When asked if he’d start his own company now, Coxon said he had “No idea what I’m doing next.”

Jonathan Rowny has been feeling nostalgic again, and this time the answer is a cassette that holds no magnetic tape. His player looks like a mixtape, fits a standard deck, and stays silent until the mechanism starts to turn. Songs live on a microSD card inside the shell. Sound leaves through a real tape head pressed against the deck’s own head, so the old machine treats digital files as if they were oxide sliding past at walking speed.



Commercial adapters from the early days of MP3s demonstrated that circuitry could be snuck into a plastic casing like that. Some were as simple as a 3.5 mm jack on a plate, while others had a full player or a Bluetooth module and managed to write analog music on the cassette using a spare head. Rowny had seen Clint’s Lazy Game Reviews (LGR) teardowns and decided to create something tighter, utilizing a bespoke board, a phone app, and some printed gears to keep the deck from shutting itself off.

The hardware starts with a Seeed Xiao ESP32-S3 module, which costs approximately $5 and includes Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and a battery charger. The PCM5102A converter converts your digital files into a lovely, silent analog pair. That pair then feeds a stereo cassette head, which was chosen after two mono cassettes failed. As with a good adaptor, a spring-loaded retainer presses the head on the deck’s head. A 600 milliamp-hour battery powers the circuit for more than ten hours, and the files are stored on a microSD card, which is inserted into a special board from NextPCB that somehow fits all of the modules inside that thin cassette envelope.

The easy part is getting the audio into the deck; the tough part is keeping it happy. Auto-stop and reverse watch the hubs; however, the hubs still appear to be a blank piece of tape at the end, so the machine assumes it has finished with the tape and turns off. Rowny came up with a solution by printing a three-gear train on a SLA printer, allowing the take-up hub to drive the supply hub and maintain both sides of the tape rolling. There’s also a 2mm-tall Alps rotary encoder on the central shaft that tells the ESP32 if everything is spinning or not. Playback begins as it moves; when it stops, the machine does as well.

Resin printing was important since the 1.7mm hexagonal shaft required a surface with precisely flat, fused faces, which Fila couldn’t provide. PLA handled the rest of the shell after that. The first gears would bind severely until the middle wheel shrank by a full two tenths of a millimeter, which was not ideal. The gears were then given a dry lubrication on their teeth. One minor wiring issue with the SD card’s chip-select pin necessitated a little solder bridge before the card would respond, and to make matters worse, the encoder pins were placed on the incorrect wake lines, so the chip still cannot sleep when the deck comes to a halt. Just as he was finishing up the project, a somewhat larger gap appeared.

The capstan and pinch roller, rather than the hubs, govern the tape’s speed. The hubs are simply there to accelerate and slow things down when the tape pack diameter varies. However, the capstan speed must remain constant at around 47.6 millimeters per second. Fortunately, factory adapters that function properly are built to measure that exact shaft, but Rowny’s encoder is still configured to watch the wrong one, so fast-forwarding is out, and the player can’t copy wow and flutter yet. The next version is designed to read the capstan instead.

An app can now communicate with the ESP32 via radio, allowing playlists to be changed without opening the shell, although sleep remains out of the question until a new board revision is released. Despite this, the finished cassette is loaded into a functional deck, the gears mesh perfectly, the two heads align, and files that have never touched magnetic tape flow out of headphones that haven’t seen action since the good old hiss and mixtape days.

Gemini Breached Three Outside Systems, and Claude-Using Researchers Breached OpenAI

“Software security researchers used Anthropic’s Claude AI platform to hack OpenAI’s ChatGPT tool,” reports CBS News.
Using Claude, “On July 25, 2026, we chained two critical vulnerabilities to compromise multiple OpenAI employees’ ChatGPT accounts,” write researchers at security platform Hacktron AI. “With these accounts, we could then access internal OpenAI repositories, and potentially many other connectors… Until two months ago, any user or OpenAI employee logging into OpenAI’s own help forum could have had their ChatGPT and Codex accounts taken over. Since people can connect various services to Codex and ChatGPT, the scope of what we could theoretically access was huge, including GitHub, Slack and emails.”

The exploit chain included Debian 12, which (with Debian 13) had not received a security-relevant backport for its image-processing pipeline, and Discourse’s Docker image was based on Debian 12. Their announcement comes with an additional warning. “If you self-host Discourse, rebuild your installation now. Older Docker images may contain a vulnerable libheif dependency that permits code execution through an image upload.”

And “To prove we had in fact gained the access we believed without allowing ourselves to learn any sensitive information, we used the employee’s Codex to open a PR #1186742 in OpenAI’s internal monorepo openai/openai.”

Meanwhile, Friday Google disclosed the first known instance of its AI software Gemini breaking out of a testing environment and breaching three other companies, reports CNBC:

The incident happened as part of a “capture-the-flag” security test run by Israeli startup Irregular, and Google’s agents were never supposed to access the broader internet, but a bug in the testing environment made internet access available. The agents stopped their intrusion when they determined they had accessed real company systems, not just part of the testing environment, Google said.

Google said it did not consider the unauthorized logins to rise to the level of misalignment, the AI industry term for software going rogue or not following instructions. Instead, the company said the intrusions resulted from mistaken identity, where Gemini thought it was operating within a test but was actually connected to the real internet. Google said the model corrected itself and the company believed the intrusions did not cause any damage….

Sydney Von Arx, CEO of Nightingale Collective, an organization focused on AI safety, questioned why Google did not disclose the intrusions sooner. “At this point I think it’s clear we cannot expect companies to voluntarily come forward and publicly disclose when their agents go rogue, escape, and hack companies,” she said. She also said she believed Google was too hasty to say that the incidents don’t rise to the level of misalignment. “That’s exactly what Anthropic said after their incidents,” she said. Anthropic later said its “preliminary analysis was constrained due to our desire to disclose incidents in a timely manner.”

Google said it investigated when they learned of the attacks from AI-focused cybersecurity company Irregular, then informed the affected organizations and told federal authorities, according to the article.

Samsung Galaxy Tab S12+ and Ultra specs leak in full, with no base model in sight

Samsung looks set to make the Galaxy Tab S12 generation a fairly conservative upgrade. WinFuture says it has obtained official data sheets for the Galaxy Tab S12+ and Galaxy Tab S12 Ultra, revealing almost the entire specification sheet ahead of launch.

The biggest change appears to be the processor. Both tablets reportedly use MediaTek’s Dimensity 9500, which would make this the third consecutive generation of Samsung flagship tablets powered by MediaTek silicon. Samsung used the Dimensity 9300+ in the Galaxy Tab S10 Ultra and the Dimensity 9400+ in the Tab S11 Ultra. Samsung is also bringing back the Plus model after skipping it last year. The regular Galaxy Tab S12 appears to be gone, leaving the 12.6-inch Tab S12+ and 14.6-inch Tab S12 Ultra as the two options.

Most of the hardware looks very familiar

The Tab S12 Ultra reportedly keeps the same 14.6-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X display, 11,600mAh battery, and 45W charging as its predecessor. Those specifications had already surfaced in earlier reports, and WinFuture’s data now appears to back them up.

Camera hardware is also unchanged. The Ultra gets a 13MP main camera, 8MP ultrawide, and 12MP selfie camera, while the Tab S12+ drops the ultrawide. Both tablets come with 12GB of RAM and 256GB or 512GB of storage. The Ultra adds a 16GB RAM and 1TB configuration, while microSD expansion remains available. The Tab S12+ gets one more tangible improvement. Its battery grows to 10,600mAh, and the tablet reportedly drops to 555 grams.

MediaTek is doing most of the upgrade work

The Dimensity 9500 had already appeared in a Geekbench listing tied to the Tab S12 Ultra. The early result showed only a modest CPU improvement over the Tab S11 Ultra, although unfinished hardware rarely represents final performance.

Samsung’s continued use of MediaTek is still notable. Previous testing suggested the Dimensity 9500 trades peak CPU performance for stronger sustained performance, thermal stability, and a more capable on-device AI processor, all of which make sense in a large tablet designed for multitasking, gaming, and creative work.

WinFuture claims the Galaxy Tab S12 series will launch on October 7 with Android 17 and One UI 9. European pricing reportedly starts at €1,299 for the Tab S12+ and €1,539 for the Ultra. Samsung had already warned that rising memory and component costs could push future device prices higher. If these specifications are accurate, the Dimensity 9500 may end up carrying most of the burden of convincing buyers to pick up the latest model instead of the previous generation at a lower price.
