The acting head of the IRS reportedly plans to resign shortly after a data-sharing agreement between the IRS and the Department of Homeland Security was announced.
Melanie Krause will resign via the deferred resignation program set up by the Trump administration over disagreements with the IRS’s direction, according to the Washington Post. Krause’s resignation will be the third by an IRS chief this year.
Daniel Werfel, the IRS commissioner under former President Joe Biden, resigned from the position in January, and his acting successor, Doug O’Donnell, resigned in February. President Donald Trump has nominated former Rep. Billy Long to be the next IRS commissioner, but while Long awaits a Senate confirmation vote, acting commissioners have led the agency.
The IRS made headlines earlier this week for its agreement with the DHS to allow the agency to get tax information, including addresses, earnings, and other information, for people Immigration and Customs Enforcement is seeking.
The agreement, revealed in a court filing Monday, is billed as part of the Trump administration’s crackdown on illegal immigration. It was signed by Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem.
Krause’s resignation comes ahead of the IRS’s 2024 tax year filing deadline, April 15. The resignation also comes as the agency, like various others throughout the federal government, has reduced its workforce through Department of Government Efficiency efforts to reduce the size of the bureaucracy.

The IRS fired thousands of probationary employees earlier this year in the middle of tax season, but a court ruling weeks later reinstated most probationary workers who were let go from the agency.
Like other federal agencies, the IRS has offered a deferred resignation program for employees as it seeks to reduce its size.
