The United Kingdom updated its travel advice for the United States on Thursday, cautioning British passport holders about severe consequences for violating U.S. immigration laws.
The U.K. based its update on the U.S.’s “current rules for the most common types of travel.”
“You should comply with all entry, visa and other conditions of entry,” the British government stated on its website. “The authorities in the US set and enforce entry rules strictly. You may be liable to arrest or detention if you break the rules.”
An archived version of the website from February merely stated that “the authorities in the U.S. set and enforce entry rules,” according to Reuters.
This update in the U.K.’s guidelines comes after a British woman was detained for three weeks by Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials regarding a mix-up with her visa earlier this month.
The woman attempted to cross the U.S.-Canada border on a tourist visa but was told she should have applied for a work visa instead. The U.K. citizen has since returned home.
The British Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office said it worked with U.S. authorities to bring her back.
Germany updated its travel advisory, warning citizens that U.S. entry is not guaranteed even with an Electronic System for Travel Authorization or a visa.
Berlin is investigating whether U.S. immigration policy has changed toward Germans after three separate incidents where German citizens with proper documentation were denied entrance and detained.
WHAT TO EXPECT FROM TRUMP’S MASS DEPORTATION PLAN
A Canadian actress, who also possessed proper documentation, was additionally detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement for 12 days.
And a French scientist was also denied entry into the U.S. allegedly based on personal conversations found on his cell phone expressing negative opinions about the Trump administration.
