‘We Are Lady Parts’ (2021–2024)
Image via Peacock
As Hannah Montana once said, “You get the best of both worlds.” We Are Lady Parts takes that quote literally. By day, Amina (Anjana Vasan) is a shy microbiology PhD student. By night, she’s the newly recruited lead guitarist for a band called Lady Parts. Apart from finding her husband, playing guitar with a group is a dream come true.
The twist is that women like Amina aren’t the type society expects to be shredding to punk rock. As a hijab-wearing, practicing Muslim, music isn’t seen as a conventional passion. The same goes for the rest of the Lady Parts, who are all practicing Muslims as well. Breaking stereos and stereotypes, We Are Lady Parts is all about tearing the house down.

‘Kim’s Convenience’ (2016–2021)
Andrea Bang as Janet in Kim’s ConvenienceImage via CBC Television
The heart of downtown Toronto lies in its humble corner stores. Kim’s Convenience is a modern take on familiar immigrant stories. First-generation immigrant parents, Appa (Paul Sun-Hyung Lee) and Umma (Jean Yoon), make a living running their convenience store in Regent Park, Toronto. They’re neither particularly street- nor tech-savvy, but their kindness welcomes customers from all walks of life.
Kim’s Convenience shows how “mundane” everyday life can still be fun and interesting. The best part is that their experiences aren’t far from reality. It’s common for immigrant families to encounter cultural gaps or language barriers, but Kim’s Convenience is a clever modern sitcom that proves how, with the power of community and comedy, they become experiences worth laughing about.

‘How I Met Your Mother’ (2005–2014)
Marshall, Lilly, Barney, Robin, and Ted discuss pick-up lines in How I Met Your Mother’s The Naked Man.Image via CBS
How I Met Your Mother is the apple that fell from the tree called Friends. Five New York-ian friends from all walks of life get through the peaks and troughs of their late twenties. But when those friends are the super-rich Barney Stinson (Neil Patrick Harris), commitment-phobe Robin Scherbatsky (Cobie Smulders), longtime couple Marshall Erikson (Jason Segel) and Lily Aldrin (Alyson Hannigan), and dreamer Ted Mosby (Josh Radnor), there’s never a dull day in the city.
The secret sauce of How I Met Your Mother is in the main cast’s chemistry. It’s not easy to build an ensemble, let alone one that can sustain nine full seasons. These five characters are the epitome of messy adulthood. Whether it’s changing careers or moving out of apartments, there’s no definitive answer to the right way of maturing. It’s no surprise that binge-watching the show makes us feel like we’re growing up alongside them.
A beloved feel-good sitcom, Ted Lassofollows Coach Ted Lasso (Jason Sudeikis) and his partner, Coach Beard (Brendan Hunt), as they jetset from Kansas to London for the gig of a lifetime. Assigned to the soccer team, A.F.C. Richmond, these two must whip the team into Premier League shape.
While Ted Lasso stars out as a typical laugh-out-loud and binge-worthy sitcom, it soon evolves into a surprisingly emotional exploration of the talented ensemble’s characters. Viewers shouldn’t be surprised when they’re roped into one genuinely gripping arc after another, with each revealing why appearances are just that, and there’s often something deeper under the surface.

Five hospitals. Five completely different ways medicine goes sideways on television — brutal, chaotic, romantic, brilliant, and ridiculous. Only one of them is the ward your instincts were built for. Ten questions will figure out exactly where you belong.

Your Assignment Has Been Made You Belong In…
Your answers have pointed to one fictional hospital above all others. This is the ward your instincts, your temperament, and your particular brand of dysfunction were built for.
The Pitt
You are built for the most unsparing version of emergency medicine television has ever shown. The Pitt doesn’t romanticise the work — it puts you inside a single fifteen-hour shift and doesn’t let you look away. You are someone who needs their work to be real, who finds meaning not in the drama surrounding medicine but in medicine itself, and who has made peace with the fact that this job will take from you constantly and give back in ways that are harder to name. You don’t need the chaos to be aestheticised. You need it to be honest. Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Center is exactly that — and you would not want to be anywhere else.
ER
You are the person who keeps the whole floor running — not the most brilliant in the room, but possibly the most essential. County General is built on the shoulders of people who show up, do the work, absorb the losses, and come back the next day without requiring the job to be anything other than what it is. You care deeply about patients as individual human beings, you believe in the system even when it fails you, and you understand that emergency medicine at its core is about holding the line between order and chaos for just long enough. ER is television about endurance, and you have it.
Grey’s Anatomy
You came to medicine with your whole self — your ambition, your emotions, your relationships, your history — and you have never quite managed to leave any of it at the door. Grey Sloan is a hospital where the personal and the professional are permanently, chaotically entangled, and where that entanglement produces both the greatest disasters and the most remarkable saves. You are someone who feels things fully, who forms deep attachments to the people you work with, and who understands that the most extraordinary medicine often happens at the intersection of clinical skill and profound human connection. It’s messy here. You would not have it any other way.
House
You are drawn to the problem above everything else. Not the patient as a person — though you are capable of caring, even if you’d deny it — but the case as a puzzle, the symptom that doesn’t fit, the diagnosis hiding underneath the obvious one. Princeton-Plainsboro is a hospital that exists to house one extraordinary, impossible mind, and everyone around that mind is there because they are smart enough and stubborn enough to keep up. You work best when the stakes are highest, when the standard answer is wrong, and when the only way forward is to think harder than everyone else in the room. That is exactly what you would do here.
Scrubs
You understand that medicine is tragic and absurd in almost equal measure, and that the only sane response is to hold both of those things at the same time. Sacred Heart is a hospital where the laughter and the grief are genuinely inseparable — where a terrible joke can get you through a terrible moment, and where the most ridiculous people are also, on their best days, remarkably good doctors. You are warm, self-aware, and funnier than most people in your field. You lean on the people around you and you let them lean back. Scrubs is a show about learning to become someone worthy of the job — and you are still very much in the middle of that process, which is exactly right.

‘Schitt’s Creek’ (2015–2020)

Audiences love a wholesome rags-to-riches story, but they laugh more from a riches-to-rags sitcom. Schitt’s Creek follows the swift downfall of the Rose family, led by video store mogul Johnny Rose (Eugene Levy). When the family’s accountant is accused of tax embezzlement, the Roses have nothing left to their name — except for a middle-of-nowhere town called Schitt’s Creek.
The out-of-touch Roses are initially a hard family to love, and that’s what makes Schitt’s Creek feel natural. They are the worst, most useless neighbors anyone could ask for. However, their desire to reclaim their riches, unironically, forces them to become better people. The Roses work hard not just to win the hearts of the small town, but also the audience tuning in.

Not even the IRA can control these wild, young, and free teens of Northern Ireland. Set in the 1990s, Derry Girls follows a group of four Irish teenage girls (and one English dude) trying to live a normal life amidst the political chaos of the time. But even with army checkpoints and bomb threats, these teens just want to make the most of the best years of their lives.
Derry Girls shows that coming-of-age desires are universal, even when the circumstances in your country feel grave and overwhelming. If anything, these tense situations add richer nuance to how these teens grow up. As much as they want to be cool and catch the attention of a school crush, they also realize that politics is a conversation that isn’t far removed from their everyday gossip.

Psychologist Jimmy Laird (Jason Segel) is good at breaking the rules — all in the name of science. Shrinking starts on a morbid note in the aftermath of Jimmy’s wife’s passing. A year has gone by, and Jimmy is just grinding through his days. But when his patients keep returning with the same unresolved issues, Jimmy decides he’s had enough.
Instead of providing them the same old consolations, Jimmy gives them the tough love they need — which, surprisingly, works. It’s hilarious to watch Jimmy provide hilariously unorthodox solutions, much to his colleagues’ disapproval. Despite Jimmy’s shenanigans, Shrinking is a beacon of hope viewers need whenever the times get tough.
3
‘Brooklyn Nine-Nine’ (2013–2021)

Back off, feds — Brooklyn Nine-Nine can handle cases on its own. The popular police procedural sitcom takes its job seriously, but every workplace has that one class, or precinct, clown. Case in point: Detective Jake Peralta (Andy Samberg). On the field, he’s smart and sharp. But to his colleagues, he’s the ultimate dork who hasn’t cleaned his desk for years.
Brooklyn Nine-Nine keeps the adrenaline going with cases ranging from petty theft to bloody murder, all of which are just as engaging as they are thought-provoking. But the show also knows how to keep the humor alive, thanks to its eccentric force, running gags, and character development that evolves over the seasons.
2
‘Kath & Kim’ (2002–2007)

From King of the Hillto Gilmore Girls, the American suburban life is ideal for most people looking to get away from the city. But somewhere in Australia, Kath & Kim hilariously show that suburban life is anything but ordinary. Mother Kath Day-Knight (Jane Turner) and her only child, Kim Diane Craig (Gina Riley), may live in the suburbs, but they harbor dreams of affluence.
But for two women whose idea of culture revolves around retro lingerie and Australian Idol, Kath and Kim are far from high class. It’s comical to watch them rock their gaudy fashion and believe they’re fly as heck. It’s not that they’re ignorant; it’s just that these two are so confident in their own bad taste that they ironically become amazingly inspiring to watch.

These teachers know a thing or two about the public education system. Set in West Philly, Abbott Elementary follows the eccentric staff of Abbott as they deal with everything school-related. From rowdy kids during nap time to budget cuts, no issue is too big for the beady-eyed middle school teacher Janine Teagues (Quinta Brunson) and her motley crew of teachers.
Audiences were all students at one point, but not all of us grew up to become teachers. Abbott Elementary shows the hard work teachers put into their classes just so their kids can get the education they deserve. The staff might not be perfect — sometimes they’re just as clueless as their students. But in true school spirit, learning never stops, no matter how old you are.
Gore Verbinski’s Good Luck, Have Fun, Don’t Die emerged as a home video hit after underperforming in theaters.Briarcliff Entertainment
Coincidentally, a trio of time-travel movies is jostling for attention on home video simultaneously. The best-reviewed of the lot is also the least high-profile: Redux Redux. Directed by brothers Kevin McManus and Matthew McManus, the movie stars their sister Michaela McManus as a woman who goes on an interdimensional mission to avenge her daughter’s death. Redux Redux had a limited release in February, but is now among the most-watched movies on the domestic iTunes rankings thanks to its near-perfect 97% score on the aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes. More recently, writer-director BenDavid Grabinski‘s Mike & Nick & Nick & Alice debuted at the number one spot on the domestic Hulu rankings.
Starring Vince Vaughn, James Marsden, and Eiza González, the movie currently holds a 78% score on Rotten Tomatoes. However, the first time-travel movie of 2026 hailed from the most popular filmmaker of the bunch: Gore Verbinski. In fact, it was Verbinski’s first feature film in a decade. He was sentenced to director jail following the back-to-back box-office failure of his big-budget The Lone Ranger reboot and the mid-budget psychological horror film A Cure for Wellness. The underperformance of his latest film isn’t the greatest outcome, especially since he desperately needed a win. But, true to form, Verbinski didn’t play it safe, even though his current status in the industry made a win especially important.

Gore Verbinski Needs a Box-Office Win Desperately
The movie in question is Good Luck, Have Fun, Don’t Die. It stars Sam Rockwellas a time-traveler who shows up in a Los Angeles diner and informs the patrons that they must help him fight a war against artificial intelligence in the future. The movie also features Michael Peña, Haley Lu Richardson, and Juno Temple. Good Luck, Have Fun, Don’t Dieopened to excellent reviews in February, only a week before Redux Redux. However, it grossed only $9 million worldwide against a reported budget of $20 million. In his review, Collider’s Aidan Kelley described the movie as “a raucous sci-fi comedy with extremely ambitious goals and insightful commentary on the current state of the world and how it can evolve (or devolve) into something unrecognizable.” According to FlixPatrol, Good Luck, Have Fun, Don’t Die‘s redemption arc is continuing despite the competition. It’s currently among the most-watched movies on iTunes and the Google Play Store. Stay tuned to Collider for more updates.
Ryan Gosling‘s latest film, Project Hail Mary, has now overtaken the lifetime worldwide box office haul of his 2017 sci-fi classic, Blade Runner 2049. It has also more than doubled the worldwide gross of his critically acclaimed biopic First Man, and is on track to overtake La La Land to become his highest-grossing hit. Gosling has been trying to pivot from arthouse cinema to more mainstream fare in recent years; he has the biggest movie of his career, Star Wars: Starfighter, lined up for release in 2027. However, Project Hail Mary is exactly what he needed to build toward his Star Wars feature. The critically acclaimed sci-fi sensation passed a couple of major box-office milestones in its second weekend, as it expanded its footprint globally.
The movie marks the directorial comeback of Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, who haven’t had a movie in theaters in over a decade. Based on the novel by Andy Weir, whose earlier bestseller served as the basis for Ridley Scott‘s The Martian, Project Hail Mary has a 95% score on Rotten Tomatoes — higher than any movie in Gosling’s career. He has an uncommonly impressive track record; aside from films such as Blade Runner 2049, First Man, and La La Land, Gosling has also starred in Drive, The Nice Guys, The Big Short, and Barbie. Project Hail Mary is his most expensive vehicle yet, with a reported budget of $200 million. Unlike previous releases by Amazon Studios, the movie has done exceptionally well in the IMAX format.

‘Project Hail Mary’ Has Demolished the Worldwide Haul of M. Night Shyamalan’s Worst Film in Just 10 Days
This weekend, the film grossed nearly $55 million domestically to pass the $160 million mark in North America. It has also grossed over $100 million from overseas markets, for a running global cume of approximately $280 million. This puts Project Hail Mary on track to pass the $300 million mark by Monday. As things stand, the movie has overtaken the $244 million worldwide gross of M. Night Shyamalan‘s After Earth, starring Will Smithand Jaden Smith. The critically panned sci-fi adventure film was released in 2013, and was intended as something of a Hail Mary for Shyamalan’s struggling career. The experiment didn’t pay off, and he had to return to square one and claw his way back up. After Earth is the lowest-rated film of his career, according to Rotten Tomatoes, and an interesting counterpoint to Project Hail Mary. Stay tuned to Collider for more updates.

It’s official! Jay Cinco and Lala Baptiste are not only expecting their first — they’re also engaged! The social media personality surprised Lala with a proposal during their baby shower, marking another milestone in their relationship.
Jay Cinco Retires His “Jersey” As He Steps Into A New Era
Jay Cinco and Lala Baptiste took a major step forward in their relationship on Saturday, March 28, as they celebrated their upcoming arrival of their child with a baby shower attended by friends, family, and notable guests. The event, which aired on a livestream and drew appearances from comedian Benndadon, Zeus Network CEO Lemuel Plummer, and reality star Scotty, as well as LiAngelo and Lonzo Ball, and Travis Hunter and his wife, Leanna Lenee.
But before the baby shower festivities began, Jay set the tone with a unique moment, a “jersey retirement” ceremony. Held in a basketball gym below the main event, the segment symbolized him leaving his past behind and stepping into a new chapter. Friends shared stories, jokes, and memories from his “outside” days, while a slideshow played showing his journey leading up to Lala.
Jay Cinco Surprises Lala Baptiste With A Proposal During Baby Shower
Following the ceremony, guests returned upstairs for the main event. After socializing, Jay Cinco gathered the attendees for a toast alongside his girlfriend. During his speech, he thanked guests for celebrating the couple’s soon-to-arrive daughter and took a moment to honor Baptiste, praising her as a mother-to-be and expressing his love. Then came the moment no one saw coming. With the room watching, Jay got down on one knee and asked Lala to marry him. Actor Mickey Rourke had a turbulent start to the year. However, things may be looking brighter for him now. In a new interview, Rourke, known for his role in “The Wrestler,” praised his therapist for helping him identify personal problems that have deeply affected him over the years. He said their tough-love approach has played a key role in his growth.
Mickey Rourke Says ‘Years Of Therapy’ Have Helped Him Get Back On The Right Path
MEGA
Speaking with TMZ in late March 2026, Rourke told the outlet that he was returning to the states after spending some time away working on a new project.
Rourke expressed his gratitude for work, noting that he’s been allowed to slowly return to the industry since learning to “behave myself.”
The actor noted that he hasn’t trashed any hotel rooms as of late, and noted the “years of therapy” it took to get him to a better place.

Mickey Rourke Says His Therapist Once Slammed Him Over His Refusal To Take ‘Accountability’

Rourke explained that his therapist once told him he doesn’t have “an ounce of accountability or concern for repercussions in your whole DNA.”
The 73-year-old said it took longer than he had hoped to grow, calling the challenges he’s faced “more like a journey” than anything else.
While Rourke is moving forward in his life, he said that some of his lowest moments led him to reflect and decide to change. “I’m starting over again,” he said. “Cause the only person I have to blame for what happened to me is me.”
Mickey Rourke Was Reportedly Facing Eviction
APEX / MEGA
Rourke’s latest statements come months after the actor made headlines after reportedly being served an eviction notice.
According to The Blast, Rourke was told to pay nearly $60,000 in back rent in December 2025 or be forced to vacate the Los Angeles property.
Rourke reportedly began renting the property in March 2025 for $5,200 per month, before the price increased to $7,000 per month.

Following news of Rourke’s alleged financial woes, a GoFundMe was created for the controversial public figure, raising over $100,000 in a short period.
“This fundraiser is being created with Mickey’s full permission to help cover immediate housing-related expenses and prevent that from happening,” the fundraiser’s description explained. “Mickey Rourke is an icon—but his trajectory, as painful as it is, is also a deeply human one. It is the story of someone who gave everything to his work, took real risks, and paid real costs.”
Rouke Claps Back At GoFundMe, Claims He Was Not Behind It, And Blasts Those In Charge

Despite the fundraiser passing the six-figure mark, Rourke was not pleased with the efforts and slammed it as “humiliating” in a social media video.
“That’s not me, okay?” he said. “I’d rather, if I needed money, I wouldn’t ask for no f-cking charity. I’d rather stick a gun up my [butt] and pull the trigger.”
Rourke explained that he was too prideful to ask for money, saying, “That’s not my style.”
“There’s only one person I can think of that would do such a thing, and I hope it’s not the person I’m thinking about. It’s humiliating,” he added.
Days later, Rourke’s manager, Kimberly Hines, came forward and took responsibility for the GoFundMe, claiming she created the page with the actor’s full support.
“We said, ‘Mickey, there’s some people that want to help you out.’ He’s like, ‘Okay, great.’ I don’t think he understood, and now it’s taken on this media frenzy, and he flipped out,” Hines said. “Nobody’s trying to grift Mickey. I want him working. I don’t want him doing a GoFundMe.”
Hines explained that she told Rourke it was important to accept the help, especially because she was facing financial challenges of her own from supporting him.

“He should probably take this help, because unless he goes back to work, I can only finance him for so long. I’m not a Getty. I’m a working woman,” Hines finished.
Rourke Removed From ‘Big Brother’ House Following Bizarre Interaction With Jojo Siwa
Mickey Rourke called out by JoJo Siwa for homophobic language aimed toward her in Celebrity Big Brother.
In the summer of 2025, Rourke faced even more backlash after being removed from the “Celebrity Big Brother” house after using controversial language with Jojo Siwa.

“Mickey Rourke has agreed to leave the Celebrity Big Brother House this evening following a discussion with Big Brother regarding further use of inappropriate language and instances of unacceptable behavior,” a “Big Brother” spokesperson said, per The Blast.
Before his removal, Rourke made headlines after speaking with Siwa, a former “Dance Moms” star, about her sexuality, saying, “If I stay [in the house] longer than four days, you won’t be gay anymore.”
At another point in the show, Rourke was heard telling his co-stars that he would “vote the lesbian out real quick,” referring to Siwa.
On the show, Rourke apologized for his comments and claimed he did not have “dishonorable intentions.”

Tiger Woods’ 2026 DUI arrest was the latest in a series of serious car accidents for the golf legend.
Police in Jupiter, Florida, confirmed on March 27, 2026, that Woods was charged with driving under the influence, among other offenses, when an SUV was found on its side after a two-vehicle crash. No injuries were reported and Woods has yet to address the matter publicly.

There was intense speculation about what caused the crash but Woods released a statement to accept full responsibility.

I will certainly make sure this doesn’t happen again,” he vowed. “This is a private matter and I want to keep it that way. Although I understand there is curiosity, the many false, unfounded and malicious rumors that are currently circulating about my family and me are irresponsible.”
Woods paid a $164 fine to resolve a careless driving charge, per contemporary reports.

At the time, Woods released a statement to assure the public that he understood “the severity of what I did.”
“I take full responsibility for my actions,” he told ABC News. “I want the public to know that alcohol was not involved. What happened was an unexpected reaction to prescribed medications. I didn’t realize the mix of medications had affected me so strongly.”
He added, “I would like to apologize with all my heart to my family, friends and the fans. I expect more from myself too.”

Budensiek continued, “Mr. Woods did a breathalyzer test with triple zeros, but when it came time for us to ask for a urinalysis test, he refused, so he’s been charged with DUI, property damage and refusal to submit to a lawful test.”

A mugshot was released that same day, showing Woods in a blue shirt and blankly staring ahead at the camera.
“As far as him being in the jail, we’re going to make sure he’s safe. We’re not going to put him in the general population,” Sheriff Budensiek confirmed. “He’s not going to be with other inmates that can hurt him or try to capitalize on what he did. He’ll pay the price but he’s not going to pay the price by getting punished in jail.”

Days after the trailer debut of HBO’s upcoming Harry Potter series, audiences seem to have been bitten by the nostalgia bug. They’re returning to watch the original theatrical films on HBO Max, revealing the unambiguous power of IP. HBO is producing the new series primarily because of the brand’s immense popularity, which could dwindle as its original fans outgrow it. The new show will presumably recruit younger audiences and take them on a decade-long journey with characters that the millennials grew up with. It will, however, also inspire cross-pollination on the HBO Max platform, as can be seen already with the impact that the trailer has had on the earlier Harry Potter movies.
The show will debut around Christmastime, and the plan is for each season to cover the events of one book. Series author J.K. Rowling wrote seven novels in total, although the final installment was broken into two parts for the film adaptation. Eight movies in total were released between 2001 and 2011, grossing approximately $7.7 billion worldwide and turning stars Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint, and Emma Watson into household names. The new series arrives in wildly different times, when Rowling isn’t as universally beloved as she used to be because of her perceived anti-trans views. However, HBO has made clear it wants her to be closely involved in the upcoming show, which is being touted as a more faithful adaptation of the books than the films were.
We pay tribute to the talents who helped define Hollywood.

The New ‘Harry Potter’ Show Will Aim to Broaden the Franchise’s Audience
That said, for a certain generation, there can be no alternative to the Harry Potter film series. Shortly after the trailer launch, audiences pushed Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone — the first film of the theatrical series — back into the domestic top 10 charts of VUDU and HBO Max, according to FlixPatrol. The show’s first season will cover the same story, and its trailer has already drawn comparisons — both favorable and unfavorable — to the first film. Widely acclaimed, the movie was directed by Chris Columbus. It grossed $1 billion worldwide against a reported budget of $125 million, and currently holds a “Certified Fresh” 80% score on the aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes. After years of being one of science fiction’s most notable filmmakers, from his work on The Terminatorseries to Aliens and even The Abyss, director James Cameron made cinematic history with Titanic, which was quite a departure from his usual genre fare. But before he set sail on such a vast historical epic, Cameron tried his hand at resurrecting another classic sci-fi feature: Planet of the Apes. No, seriously, Cameron wanted to do his own take on the “apes rule the world” concept, only he was stopped before anything ever took off.
James Cameron Attempted to Remake ‘Planet of the Apes’
In between his work on the Terminator franchise and bringing Titanic to life, James Cameron was serious about trying to bring Planet of the Apes back to the forefront of American pop culture. Although the original 1968 film is arguably the most notable installment, the original Charlton Heston-led series spawned five pictures total before a short-lived 1970s live-action television series (and then an even shorter-lived animated series) kept it afloat a while longer. But eventually the Apes fell to the wayside and, though the franchise remained beloved by some, it was largely forgotten. But in the ’90s, 20th Century Fox dusted off the talking apes for a cinematic return, and here’s where Cameron found himself involved. In a 2006 interview with Ain’t It Cool, the filmmaker noted his part in the failed project when explaining why he wouldn’t return to the Alien franchise:

“The other thing I’ve learned is that when you deal with a studio and it’s their asset… It’s their asset. And I should have learned that lesson with Planet of the Apes because I had a great… great idea with Planet of the Apes, but it was Fox’s asset. Even though I was supposedly developing it, we didn’t see eye to eye and they sort of picked up their marbles and that was that.”
While we don’t know much about Cameron’s plans for what could have been with Planet of the Apes (which wasn’t the only franchise he was interested in helming at the time), we do know that, at one point, Arnold Schwarzenegger was even involved. According to David Hughes in his book Tales from Development Hell: Hollywood Filmmaking the Hard Way, Cameron was only in talks to write and produce a potential Planet of the Apes remake, which would have required the attention of another director. Indeed, Variety also confirmed that his production house, Lightstorm Entertainment, had a “formal arrangement” with Fox, though it’s unclear exactly what all that entailed.
However, after the success of Titanic, Cameron reportedly became more interested in original material rather than pre-existing franchises. After all, it was Cameron’s vision for The Terminator (which literally came to him in a dream) that really pushed him into the public eye. In the end, it was probably for the best that Fox decided to go in a different direction. For Cameron, it allowed him to focus on his own personal projects, freeing him up further to ultimately develop Avatar — which, interestingly enough, ended up contributing to Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes years later.
Cameron Loathed Tim Burton’s Take on ‘Planet of the Apes’ — And Don’t We All
Following Cameron’s departure from the Planet of the Apes remake, Tim Burton eventually took over the project and made it his own. Unsurprisingly, Cameron wasn’t too impressed with the results. “They turned out, I think, possibly the most egregious film that they could have on that subject because they miscast the director,” Cameron told Ain’t It Cool. “It’s the only Tim Burton film that I don’t like.” That, of course, is the general consensus among Planet of the Apes fansand casual moviegoers alike. Burton’s strange take on Apes not only fails to miss the mark on what made the original so stunning, but it wastes an otherwise brilliant Tim Roth performance on subpar material. As Matt Goldberg wrote in his review for Collider: “Burton said he wanted to do a ‘re-imagining’ but there wasn’t much imagination in his forgettable remake of an unforgettable film.” At least the failed remake opened the door for the prequel reboot trilogy, which finally brought Planet of the Apes back in miraculous style that lives up to the original.
