Strictly's Toyah Willcox reveals she considered ending her life as she struggled with her career

STRICTLY star Toyah Willcox has revealed how she came close to ending her life at a notorious suicide spot.

The actress and music legend, 66, was only saved by a passing policeman who was close to the bridge in North London.

Toyah previously opened up to nearly taking her own life on a bridge during her twenties

The incident unfolded when Toyah was living in London in her early 20’s and was trying to make it on showbiz.

Recalling what happened, Toyah wrote in her memoir, Living Out Loud, that she had become aware of the reputation of a bridge near her home in London for people taking their lives.

“I grew accustomed to the view from the bridge at dawn,” she wrote.

“In those days there was little traffic on the roads at 5am. The bridge mesmerised me. It was known locally as suicide bridge.

“I contemplated jumping every time I crossed it. Sometimes because I was drunk and bolshie, but most of the time because I was heartbroken.

“Back then loneliness and rejection were a big part of my life.”

In a heartbreaking admission, Toyah said these feelings eventually evolved into her trying to end her life one morning.

She said: “It was, about 4.30am, the sun was rising on the bridge. I’d spent the night at a succession of parties.

“On the way home I stood watching the view from the bridge. It always made me cry. I thought to myself ‘what would it be like to jump?’.

“So, looking around to make sure the coast was clear, I dared myself to jump.”

“As I balanced, I thought of mum and dad, my brother and sister and how they would feel. It would destroy them.

“I thought of ending all possibilities, and decided I didn’t ever want to jump.  But by now it was too late.”

“Then, a hand grabbed my ankle. I almost fell forward,” Toyah explained.

“A voice came: ‘Don’t do it. Just don’t do it’. I turned and it was a policeman. He was white as a sheet.

“Where he appeared from I had no idea. There was no bicycle, no car, no footsteps. We talked for an hour…and parted friends.”

Toyah – born with a twisted spine, a clubbed right foot and one leg shorter than the other – recently spoke out about her health struggles and revealed she has suffered from crippling insomnia since she was just 14.

You’re Not Alone

EVERY 90 minutes in the UK a life is lost to suicide

It doesn’t discriminate, touching the lives of people in every corner of society – from the homeless and unemployed to builders and doctors, reality stars and footballers.

It’s the biggest killer of people under the age of 35, more deadly than cancer and car crashes.

And men are three times more likely to take their own life than women.

Yet it’s rarely spoken of, a taboo that threatens to continue its deadly rampage unless we all stop and take notice, now.

That is why The Sun launched the You’re Not Alone campaign.

The aim is that by sharing practical advice, raising awareness and breaking down the barriers people face when talking about their mental health, we can all do our bit to help save lives.

Let’s all vow to ask for help when we need it, and listen out for others… You’re Not Alone.

If you, or anyone you know, needs help dealing with mental health problems, the following organisations provide support:

Thankfully, after the incident, Toyah has overcome her hardship and became known as one of the defining stars of the 1980s.

This year, she’s taken on the challenge of BBC’s Strictly Come Dancing – partnered up with pro Neil Jones for the season.

However, she has a fight on her hands to remain on the show, after falling to the bottom of the leaderboard after the first two weeks.

Toyah has been criticised for “stiff” dancing both weeks, earning only 30 out of the available 80 points across the two shows so far.

The first week saw fans slam the judges for giving her such a low score.

However, week two did see a vast improvement, jumping from scoring 12 to 18 points.

Will & Harper: Will Ferrell breaks down in tears over transphobic abuse of Harper Steele in Texas

Will Ferrell breaks down in tears after a rough night in Texas with his friend Harper Steele in their new Netflix documentary Will & Harper.

The film follows the friends of 30 years on a road trip across America to reintroduce Steele, former head writer at Saturday Night Live, to her country after she came out as a trans woman and transitioned during the pandemic.

At one point on the trip, the duo stop at the Big Texan Steak Ranch in Amarillo, Texas, where they take on its famous 72-ounce steak-eating challenge.

The two are placed on a stage to complete the challenge and a crowd quickly gathers around them as diners film and take photos of Ferrell.

“As much as I’ve been in a fishbowl in various times in my life, this trumps all of it,” Ferrell says in the restaurant.

The film then shows a selection of transphobic tweets about Steele shared after the public sighting.

In the car the next day, Steele says: “The room started to feel very… wrong to me, and, I mean, the crowds that come around you so quickly. I was feeling a little like my trans-ness was on display, I guess. And suddenly, that sort of made me feel… not great.”

Ferrell begins to cry before saying: “The saddest part for me is, uh… I just feel… I feel like I let you down in that moment.”

Steele comforts her friend before the Step Brothers star adds: “I was like, ‘Oh, s***, We gotta worry about Harper’s safety.’ You know, like what… That’s where I just… I feel like I… Yeah.”

Directed by Josh Greenbaum (Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar), the new documentary film premiered at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival and was acquired by Netflix.

In 2022, at the age of 61, Steele sent Ferrell a letter in which she told him she is trans, and was newly in the process of transitioning. “I just ask you as my friend to stand up for me,” Steele wrote. “Do your best to, if I’m misgendered, just speak up on my behalf, that’s all I ask.”

In a recent interview for The Independent, Adam White asked Ferrell why he thought transphobia exists.

The comedy star replied: “There is hatred out there. It’s very real and it’s very unsafe for trans people in certain situations. But I don’t know why trans people are meant to be threatening to me as a cis male. I don’t know why Harper is threatening to me.

“It’s so strange to me, because Harper is finally… her. She’s finally who she was always meant to be. Whether or not you can ultimately wrap your head around that, why would you care if somebody’s happy? Why is that threatening to you? If the trans community is a threat to you, I think it stems from not being confident or safe with yourself.”

Netflix show Baby Reindeer ruled 'libellous' allowing Fiona Harvey to press ahead with £132m case

TELLY’S Baby Reindeer has been ruled potentially libellous — allowing the “real life Martha” to press ahead with a £132million case against Netflix.

Scottish lawyer Fiona Harvey said the hit show, watched by 50million viewers worldwide, had defamed her.

Billed as a “true story”, it told of a stalker targeting an aspiring comedian working in a pub.

Ms Harvey, 58, said she was identifiable and subject to “brutal lies”.

She has never been convicted of stalking the show’s creator Richard Gadd, 35.

In July, Netflix filed a motion to throw out the case, but a Californian court has now ruled against it.

Judge Gary Klausner said: “There is a major difference between stalking and being convicted of stalking and likewise between inappropriate touching and sexual assault.”

Sun writer and broadcaster Piers Morgan just tweeted: “Wow.”

The seven-parter, first aired in April, won six Emmy awards.

Strictly Come Dancing: Shayne Ward hits back on criticism he was ‘over-confident’

Strictly: Shayne Ward hits back on criticism he was ‘over-confident’

Strictly Come Dancing week two was eventful. Shayne Ward hit back at social media abuse, Chris McCausland made the best joke of the season, we had a Shania Twain number and Nick Knowles managed to dance after an injury meant he could only train for 16 hours.

In his VT ahead of performing, singer Ward said: “After the show on Saturday [of week one] I received some negative comments on social media saying I was over-confident. Some of them did get to me, when in truth I’m only human, I was scared, I was terrified. And I hid it behind as much smiling as possible.”

He was then shown hugging his partner Nancy Xu, before they performed their Tango to “The Door” by Teddy Swims. Head judge Shirley Ballas said: “I’ve seen the way the week’s gone for you and it hasn’t been pleasant in any way, shape or form.”

The first two weeks of the BBC competition had eased this year’s crop of stars into proceedings, with a launch show that saw the contestants partnered with their respective professional, and a first week of dances in which nobody was eliminated.

However, tonight, the judges’ scores from last week rolled over and will then be combined with the viewer vote, meaning two couples will have to take part in the dreaded dance-off during Sunday’s results show (29 September).

Catch up on the events of week two here…

Who is topping the ‘Strictly’ leaderboard?

While nobody was eliminated from last week’s Strictly, that doesn’t mean the episode has no bearing on what occurs tonight.

The judges’ scores will roll over and be combined with whatever the celebrities manage to get tonight.

With this in mind, here’s how the leaderboard currently stands:

What dances and songs will the couples be performing this week?

The biggest talking points from last week’s episode included one rather odd song choice that saw poor Paul Merson dancing an American Smooth-of-sorts to Fat Les’s “Vindaloo”.

While it’s clear why they wanted Merson – a retired footballer – to dance to a football song, there were claims ahead of the episode that he felt somewhat shafted by the decision. Of course, it went down like a lead balloon and many believe he could be this year’s “joke” contestant.

Here are this week’s song choices and dances that the couples will be performing:

‘Strictly’ star will perform despite arm injury

Nick Knowles suffered an arm injury this week, which threw his Strictly future into question.

However, it’s believed the 62-year-old DIY SOS presenter, who is currently competing on the show alongside professional dancer Luba Mushtuk, will perform tonight after doctors gave him permission.

A source told The Mirror: ”Nick and Luba’s attitude is very much that the show must go on, and they were thrilled when he was given the go ahead. They are even going to attempt a lift.

One ‘Strictly’ couple has a ‘secret code’

Strictly Come Dancing professional Jowita Przystal has revealed the secret code that she and her dance partner Pete Wicks use in training sessions.

The Only Way is Essex star Wicks is competing in this year’s Strictly competition along 14 more celebrities vying for the glitterball trophy. He is partnered with Przystal, who has worked on the show since 2021.

Appearing on Wicks’s Staying Relevant podcast, which he co-presents with former Made in Chelsea star Sam Thompson, Przystal discussed her bond with Wicks – and said they instantly “connected” when they first met.

Nick Knowles says he’s had just ‘two days’ to rehearse due to injury

Nick Knowles has confirmed he will perform on tonight’s Strictly after suffering an injury.

Earlier this week, the DIY SOS host hurt his shoulder, which has led him to have just two days of training ahead of his next performance.

On Saturday morning (28 September), he shared a video on Instagram, telling his fans: “On my way to the studios – this is show day. I’ve had two days to learn the dance as well as I possibly can. I promise to give it everything tonight and try and perform it well.

“Luba [Mushtuk] has worked her magic in choreographing something amazing. All I have to do now is perform it. It’s been a tough week but I’m very excited to dance later this evening and don’t worry about me, my shoulder’s getting stronger every single day.”

He thanked his fans and said he “will try to do my best” for everyone who sent him support, acknowledging that he’s in danger of going home if he doesn’t perform well as he’s in the bottom four of the current leaderboard rolled over from last week.

The 37-year-old rose to fame in 2008 with his boyband JLS, comprised of singers Oritse Williams, Marvin Humes and Merrygold. While the band formed in 2006, it was their performances on 2008’s edition of The X Factor that saw the group become a household name.

Paul Merson finding ‘Strictly’ experience ‘really hard’

Paul Merson has made an admission about his participation on Strictly Come Dancing.

Days after the former Arsenal and England footballer performed an American Smooth to Fat Les song “Vindaloo”, Merson, who ended near the bottom of the leaderboard, said he was finding his time on the BBC show “really hard”. However, this is not due to the technicalities required to dance.

‘Strictly’ star admits to fancying professional partner

Strictly Come Dancing’s Sarah Hadland has admitted that she fancies her professional partner Vito Coppola.

The 53-year-old comedy actor, best known for playing the joke shop manager Stevie Sutton in the BBC sitcom Miranda, freely admitted to fancying the 32-year-old Italian ballroom dancer the minute they met.

“Yes, I fancied him. I’m alive, aren’t I?” she replied when asked if she found him attractive. “If you’re female and have a heartbeat, how could he NOT be anybody’s type?”
