The multi-trillion-dollar private credit industry is in the throws of a crisis and analysts warn it could soon infect the broader monetary system.
Investors are pulling their money out of several US funds facing financial stress (known as redemptions) and those same funds have responded by limiting redemptions.
While the private lending space makes up a relatively small proportion of overall lending in the US, its capacity to create a major problem for the financial system represents a clear and present danger to the global economy.

Founder and portfolio manager at Verdad Advisers, Dan Rasmussen spoke to The Business from the US. He says private credit is in the early stages of a crisis. “What you’re seeing is that people are realising private credit was offering yields that were very high, much higher than you would have earned from safer fixed income instruments, and all of a sudden, investors in these high-yielding vehicles are learning that the marks are coming down, and that maybe they’re not going to earn the very high yields they were promised,” he says.

He says as people are pulling their money out of some of these funds, there’s less money in the asset class, and then it becomes harder to refinance. “Those loans can’t get rolled over to the same extent they might have been otherwise, which actually creates an increased default risk … So, there’s a little bit of a spiral effect, like a bank run that’s happening now in private credit.” He said.

One of the big threats to private credit, he says, is the growth of AI. “Now what we’re learning is, oh my gosh, what a surprise, there actually is risk and there’s real default risk. AI is showing where the risk might be, which is in these software loans, which are somewhere between 20 and 40% of the lending books of these different private credit lenders,” he says.

Mr Rasmussen says the big difference between now and the financial crisis of 2008/2009 is that the holders of credit this time are private companies, rather than the public-traded banks. However, the concern is that some of the holders of private credit are life insurance and retirement funds.

Five thousand XRP is more powerful than you think. Not because of what it is worth today at $1.32. Because of what it becomes across every credible price scenario that institutional analysts are publishing right now. And when you walk through the math, a stack most people think is too small to matter turns out to be one of the most asymmetric financial positions available anywhere in the world right now.

THE STANDARD CHARTERED ROADMAP. Geoffrey Kendrick, global head of digital assets research at Standard Chartered, cut his 2026 target from $8 to $2.80 and simultaneously RAISED his long-term targets. 2027 target raised to $7. 2028 target raised to $12.60. 2029 target raised to $19.60. 2030 target held at $28 without moving through the entire 2026 correction. Near-term pessimism and long-term conviction in the same document from the same institution.

THE CHECKPOINT MATH. 5,000 XRP costs $6,600 at today’s price of $1.32. At $2.80 — Standard Chartered base case — worth $14,000. At $7 — 2027 target — worth $35,000. At $12.60 — 2028 target — worth $63,000. At $19.60 — 2029 target — worth $98,000. At $28 — 2030 target — worth $140,000. From the same $6,600. These are not influencer numbers. These are Standard Chartered bank numbers checkpoint by checkpoint.

THE ASYMMETRY. Bear case if XRP drops to $0.50 — 5,000 XRP worth $2,500. Loss of roughly half. Base case doubles your money inside one year. Bull case produces a 20x return inside four years. Bear case costs you half. Best case pays you twenty times. That risk-reward profile is not available in many places right now.

Evernorth SPAC locking 473M XRP into a $1B corporate treasury — removing $625M of XRP from circulating float permanently. CLARITY Act passed the House 294 to 134. Senate Banking Committee targeting April markup. Garlinghouse at 80% passage odds. Galaxy Digital warned if it does not clear committee by end of April it is likely dead for 2026. Ripple filed for a Federal Reserve master account. OCC conditional trust bank charter already granted. The company the SEC sued six years ago is applying to become a federally chartered bank.

THE HONEST BEAR CASE. Adam Spatacco at Nasdaq sees XRP falling toward $0.50 to $1 by 2030. His argument is that banks can use RippleNet and settle in fiat or stablecoins without touching the XRP token directly. That is a real risk. Not a made-up one. RLUSD increasingly used as bridge asset in some corridors. ODL adoption plateauing is a scenario that exists. Showing you the full distribution not just the upside.

The people accumulating at $1.32 in the fear before the CLARITY Act passes are the ones on the right side of this position. Five thousand XRP is more powerful than you think.
