Mets get ‘F’ grade with multiple failing experiments so far this season
Mets get ‘F’ grade with multiple failing experiments so far this season originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The New York Mets are coming out of the first few weeks of the 2026 MLB season with a terrible 7-12 record, which has them at the bottom of the NL East.

It’s been a rough season already, and while the Juan Soto injury is playing a big role in the struggles so far, their multiple failing experiments to begin the season certainly haven’t helped.
Kerry Miller of Bleacher Report gave the Mets a brutal, but also appropriate “F” grade for the season so far, thanks in large part to the poor offense and the failing experiment with top prospect Carson Benge.
Mets given ‘F’ grade for brutal 7-12 start to 2026 season
“New York Mets (7-12): F,” Miller writes. “… Unfortunately, they are bottom five in runs scored, with seven of the nine team leaders in plate appearances posting a sub-.600 OPS. (Most notably, the ‘Carson Benge or Bust’ experiment has very much gone in the latter direction thus far).”
While the Mets could turn things around still, this grade is based on the first 20 or so games of the 2026 MLB season. And for the Mets, the first portion of the season has been a disaster.
More: Mets didn’t want to trade Brett Baty while White Sox didn’t want Mark Vientos in Luis Robert Jr. trade
They own the worst recovery in the National League, have very little offensive production despite the lineup overhaul, with all but Luis Robert Jr being major disappointments among the new additions to the lineup.
The pitching additions haven’t been great either. Devin Williams has a 6.75 ERA, while Luke Weaver has an 8.10 ERA. Freddy Peralta has been fine with a 3.86 ERA, but overall additions haven’t panned out.

What other grade could the Mets receive for this start to the year than an “F” grade? It’s gone about as bad as it could, and with Jorge Polanco down with an injury alongside Soto, there is plenty to be concerned about for the Mets this season.

Liga MX veteran enjoys sweet father-son moment in Mexican soccer match
Even at 38 years of age, Julio Cesar “Cata” Dominguez is still fit enough to see minutes at the highest level of Mexican soccer. But he put in a request this week to move to a lower category for a special reason.
A Cruz Azul legend after playing more matches than any other player for the Mexico City club, Dominguez currently suits up for Atletico San Luis. He has appeared in four matches this season, but on Friday dropped to the U-21 level so he could face his son, a Pumas academy player.

The father shared an emotional hug with his son, who turns 18 Sunday, April 19, before the match.
Julio Cesar Dominguez Junior entered the game in the 74th minute, allowing the father and son to share the field in a competitive game for likely the only time in their lives. The younger Dominguez is registered as a defender, like his dad, but also has played in the midfield.
While Mexico’s youth levels are intended for developing players, teams are permitted to drop senior players into those matches so they can pick up minutes or recover from injury.
Is Cata Dominguez retiring from soccer?
The elder Dominguez’s contract with Atletico San Luis runs out this summer, but he is yet to announce his future plans. His career will reach 20 years later this month since he made his professional debut April 29, 2006 at the age of 18. Initially a pure center back, Dominguez developed into a versatile defender who also could play right back. That ability to adapt made him an attractive player for Mexico national team managers, and he earned more than two-dozen caps for El Tri.

Friday’s match ended 1-1 with Pumas taking the contest in a penalty shootout. The clubs’ senior teams meet Friday, April 17 with Atlético San Luis needing points to get into the playoff and Pumas hoping to solidify its place in the top four ahead of the Liguilla.

IPL 2026: KL Rahul’s homecoming meets RCB’s Chinnaswamy dominance | Cricket News
BENGALURU: When KL Rahul walked into the M Chinnaswamy Stadium on Friday evening, it was with his usual swagger — but also a quiet sense of homecoming. From security personnel to ground staff, familiar faces paused to greet the homegrown star, who acknowledged them with a smile. The venue, after all, remains a second home for the Delhi Capitals’ senior pro. It’s a ground where he honed his craft and one where he will hope to rediscover rhythm after a stop-start campaign so far.Up against his former side, Royal Challengers Bengaluru, on Saturday afternoon, Rahul will be eager to make the most of familiar conditions. After a prolific 2025 season in which he amassed 539 runs, the elegant opener has managed just 111 from four outings this year, with a highest score of 92 against Gujarat Titans. Few can question his pedigree, but consistency has eluded him. RCB, however, know better than most how dangerous Rahul can be if he settles in.
Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW!At a venue where 200-plus totals have become the norm, Delhi Capitals will be desperate for a turnaround. The larger challenge, though, lies in halting a rampaging RCB unit that has made the Chinnaswamy a fortress this season. The surface here can be unforgiving for erring bowlers, and Capitals will need a marked improvement from their attack. Skipper Axar Patel and fellow spinner Kuldeep Yadav are yet to find their rhythm, while the pace unit has lacked continuity. Auqib Nabi, who enjoyed a breakthrough domestic season, has featured only once, with Lungi Ngidi, Mukesh Kumar and T Natarajan preferred options so far. On a ground where variations and execution are key, that inconsistency could prove costly.ALSO READ: Impact role again on the cards for Virat Kohli? The struggles are not limited to bowling. Barring the promising Sameer Rizvi, the batting line-up has lacked stability. Experienced campaigners like David Miller, Pathum Nissanka, Nitish Rana and Tristan Stubbs have all blown hot and cold, leaving the side searching for a collective effort. The visitors, however, have had time to regroup. They arrived early in the city from Chennai and have put in the hard yards at the BCCI Centre of Excellence. For RCB, it has taken more than a decade to turn Chinnaswamy into a stronghold. This season they have been near flawless, winning all three home games in high-scoring encounters. Their campaign, much like last year, has been built on depth and shared responsibility rather than individual brilliance. While Phil Salt is yet to explode to his full potential, Virat Kohli has already donned the Orange Cap. Tim David’s finishing prowess and Devdutt Padikkal’s solidity at the top have further strengthened the batting unit. Leading the charge, however, has been skipper Rajat Patidar, who has been in imperious touch, scoring 222 runs in five matches at a strike rate in excess of 200.“His batting has been unbelievable,” Josh Hazlewood said on the eve of the game. “He walks in and can hit the first ball for four or six. He hasn’t just maintained momentum, he’s taken it to another level, especially in that 7-15 over phase.”RCB, who will don their green jerseys for the fixture, face a fresh challenge in what will be their first day game of the season. But with momentum and form on their side, they will back themselves to extend their dominance.

IPL 2026 Points Table after Match 25: Gujarat Titans surge into top four as KKR remain winless | Cricket News
NEW DELHI: Gujarat Titans’ resurgence in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 continued on Friday as they registered a comfortable five-wicket win over struggling Kolkata Knight Riders at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. After starting the IPL 2026 season with two defeats, Gujarat Titans have now achieved a hat-trick of wins to jump to fourth in the points table with six points from five games.KKR, on the other hand, suffered their fifth loss of the IPL 2026 season as they remained stuck at the bottom of the standings with just one point from a rain-induced no result against table-toppers Punjab Kings earlier in the season. GT chased down the 181-run target with two balls to spare against KKR and improved their net run rate (NRR) to +0.018 from -0.029 — a slight but important improvement for the Shubman Gill-led side. The top three in the IPL 2026 standings remained unchanged, with Punjab Kings leading the pack with nine points from five games, followed by defending champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Rajasthan Royals — both on eight points, with RCB placed second on superior NRR.The mid-table is tightly packed with four teams on four points at this stage, with Sunrisers Hyderabad in fifth on better NRR, followed by Delhi Capitals, Lucknow Super Giants and Chennai Super Kings — all level on points. The bottom two teams are Mumbai Indians in ninth with just two points from five games, and KKR anchored at the bottom.

IPL 2026: Shubman Gill shines as GT complete clinical chase, KKR remain winless | Cricket News
Shubman Gill’s classy 86 anchored Gujarat Titans to a convincing five-wicket win over Kolkata Knight Riders in the IPL 2026 on Friday, after Kagiso Rabada and Mohammed Siraj had earlier set up the victory with a disciplined and incisive new-ball spell.Rabada (3/29) and Siraj (2/23) ripped through the KKR top order, making full use of movement and early assistance from the pitch. Their early breakthroughs left KKR struggling at 37 for 3 in the powerplay, a collapse from which they never fully recovered.
Despite the early damage, KKR found resistance through Cameron Green, who played a lone but determined hand with 79 off 55 balls. It was his most impactful innings of the season, featuring controlled aggression and strong partnerships with Rovman Powell and Anukul Roy. However, regular wickets at the other end prevented him from building a match-defining stand.Green also enjoyed a few moments of fortune, surviving an early LBW shout, seeing an edge run away for four, and being dropped on 62 by Washington Sundar. Even so, he continued to keep KKR afloat before eventually falling in the final over to Rashid Khan.In reply, Gujarat Titans seized control early, with Gill dictating terms in the powerplay. He struck three boundaries and a six inside the first three overs, including a crisp straight drive, setting the tone for the chase.Gill paced his innings beautifully thereafter, combining fluency with control. His knock of 86 included eight fours and four sixes, as he ensured GT remained ahead throughout the chase despite occasional wickets.Sai Sudharsan provided early support before Jos Buttler added quick impetus with an aggressive cameo, striking a boundary and a six soon after arriving at the crease.Although KKR managed to pick up wickets in the middle overs, they were unable to build sustained pressure. GT’s batting depth ensured there were no major hiccups as they cruised towards the target.Earlier, KKR’s innings had begun poorly, with Ajinkya Rahane falling for a golden duck to Siraj in the opening over. Rabada then struck twice more, including a sharp outswinger that induced an edge from Angkrish Raghuvanshi and a short-of-a-length dismissal of Tim Seifert, who was caught at point by Glenn Phillips.KKR’s innings never fully recovered from that early blow, setting up Gujarat Titans’ comfortable win. With this win, Gujarat Titans climb to fourth place on the IPL 2026 points table, while Kolkata Knight Riders remain bottom after another defeat.

NFL draft rumors around Giants could impact Bengals
We’ve written recently that teams like the Dallas Cowboys and New York Jets could give the Cincinnati Bengals problems during the first round of the NFL draft.
Those are trade problems, as the Cowboys and Jets seem like threats to trade up, jumping over the Bengals for a prospect like Ohio State linebacker Sonny Styles and his teammate and safety Caleb Downs.
But as it turns out, some NFL draft rumors hint that the New York Giants could cause some problems for the Bengals, too.
According to ESPN’s Jordan Raanan, John Harbaugh and the Giants could be going hard after Downs and Styles: “In an ideal world, the Giants would like to move back a few spots, add more picks (they have just two in the top 100) and draft a player like Ohio State safety Caleb Downs. But that’s easier said than done.”
Those Giants hold the No. 5 pick and also really like Styles and Notre Dame running back Jeremiyah Love.
Those are all prospects the Bengals like.
The Bengals would love Styles to upgrade the unit featuring Demetrius Knight and Barrett Carter. Downs would upgrade safety and perhaps nickel corner. The Bengals have even met with Love and have Chase Brown on an expiring contract and not much else behind him at running back.
None of this means the Bengals should panic and trade up. Not happening, anyway, given how the front office in Cincinnati operates.
But an old rival like John Harbaugh and his new team are very much a club to watch as the NFL draft unfolds soon.

How rise in doping cases can impact India’s performance in global events | Other Sports News
India’s growing doping problem has come under fresh scrutiny, with the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) flagging the steady rise in violations as a serious concern.
WADA president Witold Banka pointed to the easy availability of performance-enhancing drugs and steroids in India, while highlighting the scale of the challenge in controlling the issue.
With India topping the global doping charts for three consecutive years, the trend has raised concerns over the effectiveness of its anti-doping system and the overall integrity of its sporting ecosystem, especially with the country now holding the hosting rights of the 2030 Commonwealth Games.
India leads the unwanted list
India, for the past three years, i.e., 2022, 2023 and 2024, has been the worst performer in doping tests as it has topped the chart with the most doping cases on all three occasions.
According to WADA’s data, India recorded 125 positive doping cases in 2022, while the number rose to 213 in 2023 and to 260 in 2024. India not only has the highest number of doping cases, it is also the only country in the top five whose numbers are increasing.
Other countries in the top five, such as France, the United States, Russia and Italy, have all recorded a drop in doping cases in the past three years, unlike India.

Doping prominent at national level
Despite the significant rise in doping cases in India, it is rare that any Olympic-level sportsperson has been found guilty of doping.
Dutee Chand (athletics), Aishwarya Babu (athletics), MV Jilna (athletics), Manju Bala (athletics), DP Manu (athletics), Karthik Kumar (athletics), Parvej Khan (athletics) and Nongmaithem Ratanbala Devi (football) are some of the few international-level athletes who tested positive for doping from 2022 to 2024.
Which means most of the cases of doping are coming at the national level, signifying the issue persists at the grassroots level.
Will doping cases affect India in upcoming events?
India is set to take part in two big multi-nation events this year in the form of the Asian Games and the Commonwealth Games. Despite the significant rise in the number of doping cases, India is unlikely to be overly concerned as most of its medal hopefuls have passed the tests.
However, among the banned athletes, Dutee Chand, who won the silver medal in the 2018 Asian Games, Karthik Kumar, who won silver in the 2022 Asian Games, and DP Manu, who finished fifth in the javelin throw event of the last Commonwealth Games, could have found their way to the podium, which means India could miss out on a few medals due to the doping hit.
Can India’s situation be compared with Russia?
Before India, a country that was associated as the worst among doping offenders was Russia, as in 2019 it was handed a four-year ban from bidding and participating in any Olympic-level events after it was found that the government was encouraging doping among players.
Although Russian athletes were later allowed to compete under a neutral flag after partial relief from the Court of Arbitration for Sport, the episode significantly dented the country’s sporting credibility.
With WADA now formally urging India to address its rising doping numbers, continued non-compliance or weak enforcement could weaken its case in future Olympic hosting, if it is subjected to any form of participation ban.
WADA calls for urgent systemic action
WADA president Witold Banka highlighted the scale of the challenge, pointing to the easy availability of performance-enhancing drugs and steroids in India, which complicates enforcement efforts.
He confirmed that discussions have been held with key stakeholders, including the sports ministry and the National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA), to strengthen coordination in identifying and dismantling doping networks.
Testing improves, but gaps remain
According to NADA Director General Anant Kumar, India has adopted a two-pronged strategy—expanding testing capacity and improving transparency to build trust among athletes.
Testing numbers have nearly doubled from around 4,000 samples in 2019 to approximately 8,000 in 2025. Despite this increase, India still lags behind major sporting nations such as China, which conducts more than 15,000 tests annually.
Banka noted that a rise in positive cases can sometimes reflect better detection and targeted enforcement. However, a decline without structural reforms could signal weak oversight rather than genuine progress.
Easy access and ecosystem failures driving violations
One of the biggest concerns flagged by WADA amid rising doping cases in India is the widespread availability of banned substances.
As one of the largest producers of pharmaceutical drugs, India faces unique regulatory challenges in controlling the distribution of performance-enhancing substances.
The issue extends beyond individual athletes. WADA’s intelligence and investigations wing has identified the role of suppliers, coaches, and support staff in facilitating doping practices, pointing to a deeper, systemic problem.
Officials have also indicated that in several cases, athletes may not be acting alone but are part of a broader ecosystem that enables or even encourages the use of banned substances.

Reports: Texans’ Will Anderson Jr. agrees to 3-year, $150M deal
Jan 12, 2026; Pittsburgh, PA, USA; Houston Texans defensive end Will Anderson Jr. (51) leaves the field following an AFC Wild Card Round win against the Pittsburgh Steelers at Acrisure Stadium. Mandatory Credit: Barry Reeger-Imagn Images All-Pro edge rusher Will Anderson Jr. agreed to a three-year, $150 million contract extension to make him the highest paid non-quarterback in NFL history, multiple media outlets reported on Friday.
The deal reportedly includes $134 million in guaranteed money and has a no-trade clause for Anderson, who already was under contract with the Texans through 2027 after the club picked up his fifth-year option.
Anderson’s new deal surpasses the previous record extension of fellow edge rusher Micah Parsons, who signed with the Packers after Green Bay acquired him from the Dallas Cowboys in August. Parsons signed a four-year, $188 million extension that included $136 million in total guarantees.
Anderson, 24, has recorded 30 sacks, 64 quarterback hits, 136 tackles, four forced fumbles and three fumble recoveries in 46 games (44 starts). He was selected by Houston with the third overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, one pick behind Texans quarterback CJ Stroud. Anderson was the 2023 NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year, made the Pro Bowl in 2023 and 2025 and earned All-Pro first-team honors in 2025 when he was runner-up for NFL Defensive Player of the Year.
