Every streamer wants its own version of Reacher. But do you know what’s better than having an equally successful replacement of your own? Having two successful Reacher replacements. Prime Video has a head start, having cornered the market with titles such as Bosch, The Terminal List, and Jack Ryan. Netflix is playing catch-up. But Netflix, the world’s biggest streaming platform, is getting there with hit alternatives such as The Lincoln Lawyer, The Night Agent, and an upcoming title that could prove to be the biggest of the bunch. Like Reacher, the upcoming series is based on a novel that has been adapted for the big screen previously.
Before Alan Ritchson made the role his own, the hulking Jack Reacher was played, quite controversially, by Tom Cruise in two theatrical movies. While the first Jack Reacher film has its fans and was reasonably successful at the box office, the second was running on fumes. By the time Prime Video premiered the Reacher series in 2022, fans of Lee Child‘s source novels were ready to forget that the Cruise movies ever happened. However, the upcoming Netflix replacement has big shoes to fill. It’s based on a 1980 book by A.J. Quinnell, which was previously adapted into a fan-favorite movie starring Denzel Washington and directed by the late Tony Scott.
Here’s What You Can Expect from Netflix’s ‘Reacher’ Replacement
We’re talking, of course, about Man on Fire. Washington’s movie was released in 2004 to mixed reviews but solid box-office results. It grossed $130 million worldwide against a reported budget of $70 million, and did exceedingly well on home video. This wasn’t the first time that the novel had been adapted into a film; in 1987, Scott Glenn starred as the titular character in a largely forgotten European production. The new version is a Netflix series created by Kyle Killen and headlined by Yahya Abdul-Mateen II alongside Alice Braga, Scoot McNairy, Bobby Cannavale, and Billie Boullet. The seven-episode series will premiere on April 30 on Netflix; the show’s first two episodes have been directed by Steven Caple Jr., who broke out with Creed II and then directed Transformers: Rise of the Beasts.
Netflix’s Man on Fire officially debuts on April 30. Stay tuned to Collider for more updates.
