NFL player Mike Pennel reportedly named person of interest in DR homicide

A longtime NFL veteran has reportedly been deemed a person of interest in the potential homicide of a woman in the Dominican Republic.

The body of Carli Franchesca Guzman Roche was found at a property that was owned by Mike Pennel, who has won two Super Bowls with the Kansas City Chiefs, after she disappeared in 2021.

Guzman was declared missing on Sept. 13, 2021, after not being heard from since eight days prior. Her body was found on the property, which Pennel sold last year, in January while a worker was digging a trench, ESPN reported. The report by ESPN cited anonymous sources close to the investigation.

The home is in a gated community in Sosúa, on the northern coast of the country.

Pennel denied any involvement in a text to ESPN.

“This isn’t a story. I’m not legally involved. This is fake news being reported. I’d advise you to speak with my agent/lawyer … before writing a false story. Damaging my reputation,” he wrote to the outlet.

Pennel played for both the Chiefs and the Cincinnati Bengals this past season. It marked his third stint with Kansas City.

The defensive lineman has been suspended by the NFL three times for violating the league’s substance-abuse policy, two of which occurred in 2016. He was also sued in 2024 by Dwayne Haskins’ widow, who accused him of defrauding her of $275,000 in a dog-breeding business out of the Dominican Republic.

The 34-year-old played college ball at Scottsdale Community College, Arizona State and CSU Pueblo, going undrafted in 2014.

Iga Swiatek withdraws from Madrid with illness

Iga Swiatek withdrew from the Mutua Madrid Open after suffering from an illness in her round-of-32 match against Ann Li on Saturday.

The No. 4 seed Swiatek lost the first set to the No. 31 seed Li but jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the second set, winning 16 of 21 points on the way to winning that set in 39 minutes.

However, the six-time Grand Slam Champion looked unwell throughout and called for a medical timeout while down 2-0 in the deciding third set. She returned to the court after being checked on by doctors but retired after Li held serve.

The exit is the earliest for Swiatek in five appearances in Madrid, where she won the title in 2024.

She beat Daria Snigur in straight sets Thursday but said Saturday she’d been feeling ill for the previous two days.

“I heard there is something going on between players, that the virus is somewhere on site. I’m sure I’ll be fine in a couple of days, but I had zero energy and zero stability and just felt really bad physically, and yesterday even worse,” Swiatek said after Saturday’s match. “I knew that it’s going to be hard, but I still wanted to try.”

Previously untouchable on clay, Swiatek has struggled on the surface more recently.

In 2025, the Polish star failed to defend her Madrid and Italian Open titles and also lost in the French Open semifinals. So far this spring, she has not won more than one match in two clay court tournaments.

“On the court before the tournament I felt like I’m playing great, so actually it’s sad for me that I can’t play, because I was feeling really good with my game, and I was moving forward in the process, so, this was positive,” Swiatek said. “But for me the tournament has just started and I couldn’t even compete today, so it’s disappointing.”

The 7-6 (4), 2-6, 3-0 ret. win over Swiatek is Li’s s second Top 10 win in 12 chances and the highest-ranked win of her career. She will face the No. 24 seed, Canadian Leylah Fernandez, in the Round of 16 on Monday.

“After Virat Kohli, If Anyone Deserves Chase Master Tag, It’s Shreyas Iyer”: Ex-India Star

Published

on

Punjab Kings (PBKS) skipper Shreyas Iyer continued his incredible chasing record during his side’s Indian Premier League (IPL) match against Delhi Capitals (DC) on Saturday. In a high-pressure match-up, with KL Rahul having already made a record-breaking 152*, Iyer exhibited calm in one of the scariest situations, making full use of the platform laid down earlier by openers Prabhsimran Singh and Priyansh Arya. He made 71* off 36 balls, with three fours and seven sixes, at a strike rate of over 197.

Since 2024-a season where his stocks as a captain went several notches higher after a title win with Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR)-Iyer has been sensational in successful run chases, having scored 692 runs in 15 matches and innings at an average of 138.40 and a strike rate of 175.68, including eight fifties.

Only RCB icon Virat Kohli’s 699 runs in 12 innings at an average of 99.85 and a strike rate of 151.95, with nine fifties, are better than Iyer’s record during this period.

Former Indian cricketer Irfan Pathan hailed Iyer’s chasing after the match, posting on X that after Kohli, it is Iyer who deserves the chasemaster tag.

“After Virat Kohli, if anyone deserves the “chase master” tag, it’s Shreyas Iyer. Calm, composed, and clutch under pressure every single time,” he posted.

An awed Mohammed Kaid also posted, “Shreyas Iyer, the Sarpanch Leads from the front, keeps compiling match-winning knocks – match after match, year after year.”

With this win, PBKS remain unbeaten with six wins and a no result, giving them 13 points. DC are placed sixth, with three wins and four losses, giving them six points. PBKS broke their own record of chasing down 262 against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the 2024 season.

Coming to the match, after DC opted to bat first, an entertaining 220-run second-wicket stand between KL Rahul (152* off 67 balls, with 16 fours and nine sixes) and Nitish Rana (91 off 44 balls, with 11 fours and four sixes) took DC to 264/2.

PBKS responded in style as Priyansh Arya (43 off 17 balls, with two fours and five sixes) and Prabhsimran Singh (76 off 26 balls, with nine fours and five sixes) shaved off 116 runs in the powerplay. Later, Shreyas Iyer (71* off 36 balls, with three fours and seven sixes) stitched partnerships with Nehal Wadhera (25) and Shashank Singh (19*), completing the chase in 18.5 overs with six wickets in hand.

Dan Vladar good to go for Flyers in Game 4; Penguins turn to Arturs Silovs

Published

The Philadelphia Flyers are soaring through their first-round playoff series thanks to Dan Vladar, who has been confirmed to start Game 4 of the Eastern Conference first-round series against the visiting Pittsburgh Penguins on Saturday.

Philadelphia leads the best-of-seven series 3-0 after notching a pair of wins in Pittsburgh followed by a 5-2 home victory Wednesday. Vladar made 27 saves in Game 3, but injured his right arm during a chaotic sequence in front of the net in the third period.

While Vladar, 28, finished Game 3 without further incident, he did not practice on Thursday and the team had Friday off before he participated in Saturday’s morning skate. Flyers head coach Rick Tocchet confirmed on Saturday morning that Vladar will start Game 4.

After a strong regular season, Vladar has a .946 save percentage in this series that includes a 27-save shutout in Game 2. If Vladar had been unable to play on Saturday, then fourth-year veteran Samuel Ersson was set to make his postseason debut.

“I feel like I’m in a good spot with my game,” said Ersson, who has not played since April 14.

Of course, it will help if the Flyers continue to receive scoring production from up and down their lineup. The team had five goal-scorers in Game 3, including four who registered their first career playoff tally.

Trevor Zegras and Noah Cates each had a goal and an assist for Philadelphia, which has won six straight games dating back to the regular season. The Flyers will try to ride the momentum of their home crowd to their first series victory since 2020.

“That was the craziest building I’ve ever played in,” defenseman Nick Seeler said of the Game 3 atmosphere. “The fans were fantastic.”

Part of the chaotic atmosphere was a product of a penalty-filled second period in which the teams combined for 17 penalties. Penguins coach Dan Muse was not happy about how the officials handled the physicality in that period, but his squad doesn’t have time to dwell on their recent losses.

“We have to win a hockey game,” Muse said. “So, we’ll have a practice (Friday) and get ready for that game and then go into that game and we need to win a game. That’s entirely where the focus is right now.”

Evgeni Malkin and defenseman Erik Karlsson scored in Game 3 for Pittsburgh, which has dropped six straight contests going back to the regular season. Malkin has two goals in this series, which equals the rest of his teammates combined.

“Now we’re going to see what we’re really made of,” Karlsson said. “Now it’s do-or-die. The toughest game to win is that fourth one, so hopefully we can start by winning one.”

Only four teams in NHL history have come back from a 3-0 series deficit to win the final four games. It hasn’t happened in more than a decade — the Los Angeles Kings turned the trick against the San Jose Sharks in 2014 — and the Penguins have never accomplished it.

“There’s not much room for error when you’re in this position. That’s reality,” Pittsburgh captain Sidney Crosby said. “But the fact is, we’ve got to win a game. That’s got to be our focus. You can’t grab three on Saturday. You’ve got to win one.”

The Penguins are making a goaltending change, with Arturs Silovs getting the nod over Stuart Skinner.

“Both guys have played very well for us all year,” Muse said of Silovs and Skinner. “You go through the entire regular season, both guys have won big games. We have a lot of confidence in both guys. Decision isn’t based on Stu’s play; I thought Stu’s played really well this series.

“We lost three games and so (we) decided that we made some changes there in the lineup.”

Skinner, who started the first three games, has a 3.08 goals-against average and .873 save percentage in the series.

Silovs, 25, posted a 19-12-8 record with two shutouts and a 3.07 GAA and .888 save percentage in 39 games (38 starts) this season. Two seasons ago with the Vancouver Canucks, Silovs went 5-5 in 10 playoff starts with a 2.91 GAA and .898 save percentage.

“I think you’ve seen in his day to day, just his preparation, he’s a competitor, whether it’s in practice or in games,” Muse said. “You can say that obviously with both guys, but I think it’s a good thing and it’s a benefit to us, is you’ve got both guys that have been in a lot of big games, with Arty just going back to playoffs, Olympics, World Championships. He’s a young guy, but he has had a lot of big moments that he’s been in, and he’s attacked those big moments.”

“Nothing Serious”: Delhi Capitals Director Of Cricket Venugopal Rao On Lungi Ngidi’s Injury

Published

on

Delhi Capitals (DC) Director of Cricket Venugopal Rao said pacer Lungi Ngidi’s head injury sustained during the IPL clash against Punjab Kings was “not serious”, even as the South African was taken to Max Hospital in Karol Bagh for tests after being taken off the field in an ambulance. In the third over of Punjab Kings’ chase, Ngidi fell backwards while trying to catch Priyansh Arya at mid-off, banging his head hard on the turf. He clutched his head immediately and lay on the ground as the medical staff rushed in. Play was halted for 15 minutes before Ngidi was stretchered into an ambulance, with players, coaches and medical staff wearing tense expressions.

“Still, I think it is not serious. He is still in the hospital. We will update, but nothing serious,” Rao said after the game ended. On the confusion around concussion substitution, where Dushmantha Chameera was named first and later replaced by Vipraj Nigam, Rao clarified, “Only four overseas players are allowed. There is a rule. We cannot take a fifth overseas player. Simple.”

He stressed that player safety remained paramount, even as Ngidi’s absence meant DC couldn’t defend 264/2. “First of all, player safety is always important. Whatever happens, we play this game, but safety comes first. When we see this kind of scoreboard, we missed his 24 balls, four overs, it makes a difference. We hope Lungi Ngidi recovers fast and comes back. I cannot comment on more right now.

Punjab Kings’ leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal also expressed concern and hoped for a speedy recovery for Ngidi. “That time I was sitting upstairs. Definitely, it feels bad if someone has an injury, especially, head injuries are always very dangerous.

“Hopefully, he will get well soon because even yesterday, I think, a net bowler got hit by a ball and was taken to hospital. So, whenever these things happen, obviously, everyone feels bad. We just want him to get well soon and come back to the ground,” Chahal said.

Rao also confirmed Mitchell Starc’s availability to play for DC from May 1. “Cricket Australia has given a report. From 1st May onwards, he is available. We will wait and see the combination.”

Delhi Capitals had posted 264/2 on the back of KL Rahul’s unbeaten 152, but Punjab Kings chased it down with seven balls to spare, registering the highest successful chase in IPL history.

IPL Franchises Wish Speedy Recovery To Delhi Capitals’ Lungi Ngidi

Published

on

Punjab Kings rewrote the T20 record books with a breathtaking batting blitz, pulling off the highest-ever successful chase in the format’s history by overhauling a daunting 265-run target to outgun Delhi Capitals by six wickets in an IPL run-fest in Delhi on Saturday. KL Rahul blended grace with power to script a stroke-filled 152, the third-highest individual IPL score, while Nitish Rana (91) batted with authority as the duo powered hosts Delhi Capitals to a mammoth 264 for 2 after opting to bat first.

Chasing the target, Punjab’s dynamic opening pair of Prabhsimran Singh (76) and Priyansh Arya (73) came out all guns blazing, adding 126 runs in just 42 balls to lay a formidable foundation for the chase and set the tone for their sixth win of the season.

Skipper Shreyas Iyer, who was dropped by Karun Nair twice in the span of three balls, then scored an unbeaten 71 off 36 deliveries to take PBKS over the line with as many as seven balls to spare. .

Incidentally, the previous highest successful run chase in T20 as well as IPL history also belongs to PBKS when they chased down 262 against the Kolkata Knight Riders in 2024.

They remain unbeaten this season and on top of the points table with 11 points from six games In a match where 49 boundaries and 33 sixes were hit, with only six wickets falling, the bowlers were arguably the biggest losers.

The visitors showed remarkable composure and intent, building on their previous outing where they had scored the previous highest total of the season.

Local lad Priyansh and Prabhsimran consistently sent the ball to and over the fence. The latter hit six fours against Mukesh Kumar in the sixth over.

There were anxious moments during the chase when Delhi Capitals pacer Lungi Ngidi was hit the back of the head on the ground while attempting a catch off Arya’s bat.

The South African had to be stretchered off the field after a delay of over 15 minutes, momentarily halting proceedings.

Both sides were also guilty of sloppy fielding, with dropped catches and misfields adding to their woes.

Earlier, setting a target for the first time this season, the Capitals came out with clear intent, attacking anything in their arc from the outset.

The home team hit a total of 29 fours and 13 sixes to put on board the highest total of the 2026 IPL season.

Striking at over 200 throughout the 20 overs, Rahul (152 off 67 balls) unfurled a range of classical strokes all around the ground, seamlessly combining timing with aggression to put up the highest-score ever by an Indian in the IPL.

With the knock, he also became only the third player to go beyond 150-run mark after Chris Gayle (175) and Brendon McCullum (158).

Dropped twice, Rahul made full use of the reprieve, forging a 220-run stand with local boy Rana for the second wicket. It was second biggest stand in IPL history behind 229 set by Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers.

Rana looked completely at ease on his home ground. His 44-ball knock, laced with 11 fours and 4 sixes, provided the perfect foil as the duo kept the scoreboard ticking at a brisk pace.

Rahul set the tone early, striking back-to-back boundaries in the second over before Pathum Nissanka chipped in with a crisp four.

Although Punjab struck an early blow with Nissanka top-edging to the keeper, their bowlers found little respite thereafter. They were also guilty of a few misfields, which only added to their woes.

Rahul and Rana seized control, punishing anything loose and propelling Delhi to 68 for one, DC’s best powerplay score of the season before plundering 145 runs in the middle overs.

Rana then shifted gears in spectacular fashion, taking apart Australian pacer Xavier Bartlett in the 12th over for 28 runs.

The left-hander dealt exclusively in boundaries, smashing two sixes and four fours in a sequence of 6,4,4,4,4,6.

At the other end, Rahul was equally ruthless, taking a liking to Vijaykumar Vyshak in the 16th over, from which he plundered three sixes and a four, as Delhi tightened their grip on the contest.

Sooryavanshi now has 357 runs from eight matches at an average of 44.63 and a staggering strike rate of 234.87. Interestingly, KL Rahul also moved to 357 runs following his unbeaten 152 against Punjab Kings. However, it is Sooryavanshi who sits at the top due to his superior strike rate. Kohli, who had led the charts earlier, has 328 runs at an average of 54.67 and a strike rate of 163.18.The latest surge came through a breathtaking innings against Sunrisers Hyderabad, where Sooryavanshi hammered a 37-ball 103, his second IPL hundred. The 15-year-old dominated from the outset and set the tone early, even taking on Praful Hinge with four consecutive sixes in the opening over as a statement of intent. He found strong support in Dhruv Jurel, who compiled a fluent half-century, and together they stitched a 112-run stand for the second wicket that laid the foundation for a massive total. Jurel’s composed 51 off 35 balls ensured the pressure never dipped, while Sooryavanshi continued to dismantle the bowling attack with fearless strokeplay. The youngster brought up his half-century in just 15 balls during the powerplay, continuing a remarkable trend this season. He later converted it into a century in just 36 balls, peppering the boundary with five fours and 12 sixes before being dismissed for 103 off 37 deliveries.Late fireworks from Donovan Ferreira added further momentum as Rajasthan Royals finished with a commanding 228 for 6 in their 20 overs.
