When it comes to quality, the combination of Mike Flanagan‘s writing and direction and the foundation of Stephen King stories really is a safe bet, isn’t it? With Gerald’s Game and Doctor Sleep being solid movies and the looming promise of adaptations of The Mist and The Dark Tower being in the works, Flanagan has become the go-to filmmaker for bringing King’s work to life. There’s no better (or more recent) example of that being the case than last year’s The Life of Chuck.
While it has the branding of King’s name in the credits, it leans more towards The Shawshank Redemption than The Shining when it comes to cinematic equivalencies, forgoing horror and, instead, presenting human drama and feel-good moments. That is, once you get past the fatc that it’s also one of the most somber apocalyptic movies you’ll ever see. To quote Cillian Murphy in Oppenheimer, “It’s paradoxical, and yet, it works.”
The film is based off of the novella of the same name from Stephen King’s novel If It Bleeds, and it follows the titular Chuck (Tom Hiddleston), as we witness key moments told in reverse chronological order that showcase the heartbreak — but more importantly, the elation and euphoria — that life can bring.
We also follow a teacher named Marty (Chiwetel Ejiofor) as he manages his way through an exceedingly morose world that’s seemingly heading towards what may be the end times. Those two characters sound like they’re in two entirely different movies, but the bittersweet message to be gleaned from them, combined with the ending, will have you feeling optimistic rather than pessimistic.
If there’s a subsection of the apocalyptic genre that explores the looming threat of doomsday, rather than the event itself, The Life of Chuck would get a gold star sticker, because it tackles the feeling of dread from a far different angle than movies would usually go. Rather than a place of chaos and anarchy, the movie tackles it in a far more bleak and melancholic way. The story takes place in a small suburban town (probably somewhere in Maine) and is seen through the eyes of Marty and his ex-wife Felicia (Karen Gillan). Both are bearing witness to the ravenous elements that are afflicting the world, such as catastrophes, natural disasters, and the steady loss of everything that people have become accustomed to. Things like the internet have begun to fall into entropy, and it’s happened rapidly within the last 14 months. Everything progressively gets worse and the cause of it seems to be beyond anyone’s control or understanding.
Only 3 Horror Movies Are More Terrifying Than ‘Hereditary’
Relentless horror that lingers for years.
It’s incredibly bleak, with the people in town forgoing any attempt at looting or rioting and instead coming to grips that everything is falling apart, and they’re powerless to stop it. As it’s said by Marty’s neighbor Gus (played by the walking embodiment of warm hugs himself, Matthew Lillard), “We’re going through the five stages of grief. Don’t you get it? I mean, we just landed on the final stage: acceptance.” People stop going to work or school since they all see the futility in it, and that’s where the underlying, and almost monotonous, horror comes from — them knowing they’re all going to die and then having to wait for it to happen. As it’s said in the movie, it’s the waiting that’s the hardest part, and it leads to the chapter’s final moments, which is one of the most haunting things ever put in any Flanagan or King project.
You wouldn’t think that a movie that spends so much time on the fall of civilized society would also make you feel warm inside, but The Life of Chuck is an anomaly. It helps that it’s narrated by Nick Offerman, who adds a degree of warmth and enchantment to the way he describes the world of the film. Not to mention that Flanagan’s flowery dialogue blends seamlessly here to create wholesome set pieces and character moments, like Miss Richard’s (Kate Siegel) deconstruction of Walt Whitman‘s “Song of Myself” or Albie (Mark Hamill) talking about the purity and artistry of math. In the hands of another filmmaker, these could feel so trite and forced, and the same could be said for the dance sequence between Chuck and Janice (Annalise Basso). However, everything feels true to the characters, and gives the movie a sense of positivity and wholesomeness.
That’s the word that really separates The Life of Chuck from other Stephen King stories: Wholesomeness. While a lot of his stories have an air of cynicism about the nature of people, this one isn’t afraid to be unabashed about the goodness they’re capable of too. Unlike other Stephen King works, there’s no malicious force or a character you despise. The threat of the story is the inevitability and unexpected nature of death, but that leads back to the endearing message of the film, which is to embrace that uncertainty and live life to the fullest with what time you have. That’s not what you’d expect from the author who’s known for putting Lovecraftian bugs and clown spider aliens in his stories, but that’s what helps it stand above the rest.

Vice President JD Vance revealed his pregnant wife Usha Vance’s reaction to him being rushed off stage during the White House Correspondents’ Dinner shooting.
“I think, honestly, it was tougher for my wife, who was at home with the kids and started hearing things through text messages and social media, than it was for me,” JD, 41, told Fox News on Monday, April 29. “I really didn’t know what was going on.”
The vice president was evacuated from the ballroom of the Washington Hilton several seconds before Secret Service agents got President Donald Trump out of the room when shots broke out on Saturday, April 25. (Trump, 79, later explained to 60 Minutes that he “wanted to see what was going on” before evacuating the ballroom with his wife, first lady Melania Trump.)
Describing the harrowing events, JD told Fox News, “I’m sitting up there on the dais with some journalists and obviously the President of the United States a few seats to my right. There’s a lot of commotion. You hear some loud noises. I had no idea what it was.”
“Before I had any idea what was going on, I started seeing people duck under their tables or respond to what was going on far in the back of the ballroom,” he went on. “An agent comes and whispers in my ear, says basically, ‘Sir, we have to leave.’ … The agent sort of lifts me to my feet and I walk off stage and go to my hold room and wait and see what’s going on.”
JD admitted that he wasn’t really “freaked out” until he heard that a Secret Service agent had been shot. (A bullet struck the agent’s protective vest and he was hospitalized for treatment.)
“In the fog of war, I actually thought, ‘This guy is seriously injured or maybe worse,’” the politician remembered. “We found later that he was not seriously injured. As you learn this information, the thing that I really gained an appreciation for, is what an amazing job the agents of the Secret Service do.”
California native Cole Tomas Allen was apprehended during the shooting and subsequently charged with attempting to assassinate the President of the United States, transportation of a firearm and ammunition in interstate commerce with intent to commit a felony, and discharge of a firearm during a crime of violence, per the Justice Department. He has not yet entered a plea.

Meanwhile, the Vances announced in January that Usha is pregnant with their fourth child. (They also share sons Ewan, 8, and Vivek, 5, and daughter Mirabel, 3.)
“We’re very excited to share the news that Usha is pregnant with our fourth child, a boy,” the Vances announced on January 20. “Usha and the baby are doing well, and we are all looking forward to welcoming him in late July.”
Their statement concluded, “During this exciting and hectic time, we are particularly grateful for the military doctors who take excellent care of our family and for the staff members who do so much to ensure that we can serve the country while enjoying a wonderful life with our children.”
In March, Usha opened up to NBC News about her and JD’s decision to have a fourth child.
“I grew up in a family of two, and I thought that was a great number. And then I had two kids, and I thought — I didn’t feel quite done, right? So I really wanted to have a third child,” she explained. “We did feel very complete with a third child, in many ways. We have our daughter, who’s amazing, and it was great. And so I just wasn’t sure. But as time passed, I realized that I was feeling more and more excited about that possibility.”
Usha added, “And so if there was a chance, I should take it. I knew that I’d be happy if we only had three kids, and I knew that I’d be happy if we had four. And so here we are.”
The Vances have been married since 2014.
Timothée Chalamet’s relationship with Kylie Jenner has taken center stage once again, and this time, it is not just gossip driving the conversation.
The actor’s growing openness about his romance is now causing a noticeable shift among his most dedicated fans.
Some are walking away entirely, while others are questioning what this new chapter means for his image.
At the same time, insiders say the couple is moving forward seriously, even as outside reactions continue to intensify.
Timothée Chalamet’s fan base has hit a breaking point, led by one of his most recognizable supporters.
Simone Cromer, the 59-year-old behind Club Chalamet, officially stepped away from the actor, ending years of devotion.
Cromer had previously expressed “pain and heartache” over his relationship with Kylie Jenner, even going as far as editing the socialite out of images and refusing to mention her by name.
However, she ultimately chose to leave the fandom herself, citing how much things had changed. “To deny the obvious is to be obtuse and bury your head in the sand,” she wrote in an Instagram post on Saturday.
“This fan community is not the same as it was four years ago. The notable shift was exactly 12 months ago, and the clock started to tick. Basically, so much has changed from what we all initially signed up for that it doesn’t resemble what lured us here in the first place,” Cromer added.
Her exit mirrors a past pattern. Years earlier, she had been a dedicated supporter of actor Michael Fassbender before stepping away around the time he married Alicia Vikander.
Now, it appears Cromer has shifted her attention again, this time toward rising actor Connor Storrie.

Despite fan backlash, Timothée Chalamet and Kylie Jenner appear to be growing closer than ever.
According to insiders, the relationship has reached a deeply personal level, with the “Dune” star becoming part of Kylie’s inner circle.
“Kylie’s entire family loves Timothée,” one insider told the Daily Mail. “He calls them his second family. When he’s in LA he and Kylie live together in her Hidden Hills home and he is very involved with her children, Stormi and Aire. Kylie told him there’s no one else she’d consider having another child with,” they added.
The couple has reportedly built a stable dynamic, spending time together privately while also supporting each other publicly.
Their bond has only strengthened as they navigate increasing attention, with insiders suggesting they are focused on maintaining what they’ve built.

Chalamet may be ready for the next step, but Kylie is approaching things more cautiously.
Sources say the 30-year-old has discussed proposing, though Kylie is not eager to rush into marriage.
“Timothée has talked proposing to Kylie, but she doesn’t want to get married, at least not yet. She told him when couples get married things usually start to go downhill,” an insider shared.
According to them, Chalamet has been seeking advice from Kylie’s mom, Kris Jenner, and sister, Kendall Jenner, on how to make his girlfriend change her mind.
The reality TV star’s hesitation is said to stem from her family’s history, which includes several high-profile divorces.
That reality has shaped her outlook, making her more careful about long-term commitments.
Even so, her family reportedly supports the relationship and frequently encourages the couple to make things official.

Timothée Chalamet and Kylie Jenner first crossed paths in January 2023 during Paris Couture Week at a Jean Paul Gaultier show. By April, rumors of a romance had begun circulating, though the pair kept things quiet.
They eventually confirmed their relationship publicly at a Beyoncé concert in September 2023 before appearing together at the US Open.
From there, they became more visible, attending events and gradually embracing public displays of affection.
By early 2024, Kylie was a regular presence at award shows alongside Chalamet, including their Golden Globes debut.
Their growing comfort in the spotlight led to increased speculation, especially during this year’s awards season.
Things became even more intense after a viral video appeared to show Ariana Grande asking, “Oh my God, are you guys engaged?”
Around the same time, Chalamet gave a coy response in an interview when asked if he had a girlfriend and if he would get married, saying, “You’re going to get me in trouble, man,” before adding, “Yes. Yes.”

After a highly publicized awards season, Chalamet and Kylie are reportedly trying to dial things back and focus on their private life.
The lovebirds have been spending time together away from the spotlight, including a recent beach getaway and a courtside appearance at a New York Knicks game.
“They’re currently enjoying the life they have made for each other,” a second insider said. The source added that they want to maintain their current balance without disrupting it too quickly, noting, “He’s still able to film and be away and she can be a mom and do her thing.”
The insider continued, “But if it were up to Kris and the rest of the family, they would want Kylie married yesterday. They bring it up to her all the time. ‘When are you getting married?’ ‘When am I getting more grandkids?”
According to them, Kylie’s family loves Chalamet and would want them to have a huge wedding and a big family. They also noted that her sisters are certain the actor is the right one for her.

Charlize Theron is drawing a firm line when it comes to her future relationships.
During an appearance on “The Drew Barrymore Show,” the Oscar-winning actress revealed she has no intention of ever living with a partner again, despite still being open to love.
The “Mad Max” star explained that her priorities have shifted. She said her children, Jackson, 14, and August, 11, are taking center stage. She also revealed that they have started asking more questions about her dating life. While Theron isn’t closing the door on romance, she made it clear any future partner will need to live nearby, but not under the same roof.
While appearing on “The Drew Barrymore Show,” Theron opened up about a boundary she has set for future relationships, revealing she has no plans to ever live with a partner again. According to the actress, she’s serious about the decision, even if some people close to her still think she’s joking.
That doesn’t mean she’s against closeness. The “Bombshell” star stressed that connection still matters, but on her own terms.
“I would love for you to be close, like buy the house down the street, but I don’t know if I can,” she said, per PEOPLE Magazine.

Theron made it clear her children are at the heart of her decision. Explaining her stance, the actress suggested it may be tied to the fact that she still shares her home with her two daughters, Jackson and August.
“Maybe it’s because I still have my daughters in the house, and maybe that will change when I’m an empty nester, but I’m looking for something very specific,” she said.
Her remarks struck a chord with Barrymore, who acknowledged that the choice did appear rooted in putting her children first. Theron doubled down, admitting it’s “impossible” not to, while emphasizing that her kids will always come before anything else in her life.

Now teenagers, Theron’s children have started taking a keen interest in their mom’s romantic life, often asking questions and encouraging her to put herself out there.
That shift caught Theron off guard. She admitted she once worried her daughters might feel threatened by her dating, but the opposite has proven true.
“My kids are at an age now where they actually enjoy that I’m dating because they want to be involved,” she shared during her chat with Barrymore.
She added with a laugh, “It’s really funny how I was scared they’d be threatened by it, and now they’re like, ‘Mom, is he texting you? Like, go on the date, mom.’”

Theron has long been clear about what she wanted her family to look like. The actress adopted her daughters, Jackson in 2012 and August in 2015, and revealed that adoption was always part of her plan, even while navigating relationships.
“Even when I was in relationships, I was always honest with my partners that adoption was how my family would look one day,” she said in a previous interview.
Theron also noted that she never seriously considered having children any other way, stressing that adoption was always her foremost choice.
“This was definitely not a second option for me. It was always my first,” she added.
Theron isn’t sugarcoating the realities of motherhood. Speaking on an April 2026 episode of the “New Heights” podcast with Travis and Jason Kelce, the actress admitted that raising her daughters can be intense at times.
She joked that her kids can “just turn into hormonal nightmares,” especially when tensions run high between them.
“When they fight, I actually got worried,” Theron said. “I was like, am I not doing the right thing? Like, they’re gonna kill each other because they’re both very, very strong.”
Still, she made it clear that their fiery personalities come with a positive side.
“They’re not wallflowers. They’re stubborn, and they’re just firecrackers,” she added, before noting, “When they love, they love very hard.”

Kelly Ripa isn’t just casually name-dropping her skincare — she’s fully sold on it. The one product that she claims has “changed her entire routine?” The L’Oreal Paris Revitalift Triple Power Age-Defying Face Serum. The 53-year-old TV host and L’Oréal Paris partner recently shared on Instagram that the serum has been the “skin savior of [her] life” as she navigates different climates, giving followers a glimpse into the product she consistently reaches for. For someone known for her consistently fresh, smooth complexion, that kind of rave review hits.
The serum’s standout ingredient is hyaluronic acid, a hydration heavyweight that pulls moisture into the skin to create that instantly plumped, more supple look. Using different forms of hyaluronic acid, it delivers both surface-level smoothing and deeper hydration support. Translation: skin looks dewier right away, but with continued use, it can also help soften the appearance of fine lines and dryness-related texture. The texture itself is lightweight, slightly gel-like and sinks in quickly, so it won’t interfere with the rest of your routine or pill under makeup.
Get the L’Oreal Paris Revitalift Triple Power Age-Defying Face Serum for $20 at Amazon! Please note, prices are accurate as of the publishing date but are subject to change.
Beyond hydration, the formula is designed to support a smoother, more refreshed overall look. Ingredients like glycerin help reinforce moisture retention while the fragrance-free base makes it easy to use even if your skin leans sensitive. This anti-aging skin savior quietly does a lot — it’s plumping, smoothing and gives skin that subtle bounce that makes everything else (foundation, concealer, even bare skin) look better.
Using it is simple and low-effort. Apply a few drops onto clean, slightly damp skin morning and night, then follow with your moisturizer to lock it in. It layers seamlessly with other products, so whether your routine is minimal or packed with actives, it fits right in without overcomplicating things.
One Amazon reviewer who noticed the formula made their skin “noticeably smoother” and resulted in “fewer fine lines” wrote: “My texture looks smoother, and my fine lines appear softer. It feels lightweight, absorbs quickly and leaves my skin looking more refreshed and even.”
If you’re looking for a straightforward way to upgrade your skin without overthinking it — or overspending — this is one of those skincare staples that earns its hype. Add it to your routine now to see why Ripa says it completely changed hers!

Meghan McCain predicted a huge upset victory for The Hills star Spencer Pratt in the Los Angeles mayoral race.
“I’m telling you this guy is going to win,” McCain, 41, wrote via X on Wednesday, April 29.
The former View panelist responded enthusiastically to a new campaign ad from Pratt, 42, where he visited Mayor Karen Bass and rival candidate Councilwoman Nithya Raman’s L.A.-area homes.
“This is where Mayor Bass lives. Notice something? Or, here where Nithya Raman’s $3 million mansion sits,” he declares. “They don’t have to live in the mess they’ve created.”
The ad then cut to Pratt standing in front of a trailer where he and wife Heidi Montag lived after they lost their homes in the 2025 California wildfires. (Pratt and Montag share two children: Gunner Stone Pratt, 8, and Ryker Rock Pratt, 3.)
“This is where I live,” he said in a scene outside the trailer. “They let my home burn down. I know what the consequences of failed leadership are. That’s why I’m running for mayor, for my sons and the rest of us Angelenos who want to stop these corrupt politicians from destroying our city. We are going to get the golden age of Los Angeles back.”
Us Weekly has reached out to Mayor Bass and Councilwoman Raman’s campaigns for comment.

In January, Pratt announced his bid for Los Angeles mayor on the anniversary of the Palisades Fire, which killed 12 people and burned more than 6,800 homes near Pacific Palisades, California.
“The system in Los Angeles isn’t struggling, it’s fundamentally broken,” Pratt said at the “They Let Us Burn” public demonstration. “It is a machine designed to protect the people at the top and the friends they exchange favors with while the rest of us drown in toxic smoke and ash. Business as usual is a death sentence for Los Angeles, and I’m done waiting for someone to take real action.”
Pratt has risen in recent polls to become a legitimate contender in the race and received endorsements from Joe Rogan, The Hills costar Kristin Cavallari and podcaster Nick Viall, among others.

“This is more The Hills, but coming off of Laguna [Beach], I had a lot of people say, ‘Talk about Spencer running for mayor.’ So you know what? Let’s talk about it,” Cavallari, 39, teased during the April 21 episode of her “Let’s Be Honest” podcast. “I think Spencer running for mayor is f***ing genius. Because I think everyone in politics — I don’t care what side you’re on — everyone is corrupt.”
Spencer’s sister and former The Hills costar, Stephanie Pratt, was not supportive of the campaign, urging Los Angeles voters not to elect “another unqualified and inexperienced mayor.”
“A vote for him is a vote for stupidity,” Stephanie, 40, tweeted on February 14. “He’s just trying to stay famous and sell his memoir don’t be fooled. In an ideal world the palisades would have their own mayor and police department. I would love [for] him to be mayor of [the] Palisades but not LA with 4 million people. I’d be impressed if a republican could turn LA democrats thb.”
She went on, “At least hire someone with work experience who wasn’t in a cult. I’m WORRIED about LA. I have no problem with Spencer playing government but our city needs help.”
Community actress Yvette Nicole Brown was another dissenting voice, complaining via Threads on Thursday, April 24, that Pratt’s fundraising success proved that “this nation is unserious and has learned nothing,” seemingly likening the Hills star’s campaign to reality star-turned-politician President Donald Trump.
