Mum’s horror after finding newborn baby boy ‘grey and bleeding from the nose’ after suffocating in his sling
A FIVE-week-old baby boy was discovered grey and bleeding from the nose by his mum after being carried in a sling.
Little Ruadhán Bradshaw-Hall passed away in December 2022, an inquest held at Dublin District Coroner’s Court heard.
His cause of death was attributed to sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS), when an apparently healthy baby unexpectedly passes away during sleep – often during the first six months of their life.
Only 200 babies die of SIDS in the UK, so the occurrence is very rare.
It’s thought to affect babies born prematurely or with a low birth weight who are exposed to environmental stressors like tobacco smoke, getting tangled in bedding, a minor illness or a breathing obstruction.
Dr Michael McDermott, who carried out a postmortem on baby Ruadhán, told the court that while it was extremely rare, and there was a link between the use of slings and an increased risk of SIDS.
Ruadhán was wrapped in a jersey sling to protect him from “arctic” weather as his family visited a Christmas market near their home in Garristown on December 10, 2022, breakingnews.ie reported.
An ambulance was called after Ruadhán’s mum, Sinéad Hall, found him unresponsive, and the tot passed away 11 days later.
It was later determined that the baby had suffered from severe brain injuries due to a lack of oxygen.
The court heard that the jersey sling Ruadhán had been wrapped in “may or may not” have compromised his ability to breathe, according to The Irish Times.
Keith Bradshaw, the tot’s father, told the court that if he and Sinéad had been aware of a link between slings and SIDS they “would have been more cautious” in using one.
He asked that information around slings and the risk factors associated with using them be made available to new parents.
The coroner overseeing the case said she intended to write to the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) about the issue to ensure more parents are made aware of possible risks and that guidance around the safe use of slings is spread by maternity hospitals and GPs.
Keith recounted how he, Sinéad and their children went to a Christmas market a short distance from their home, placing Ruadhán into a sling to carry him.
As the weather was “arctic”, he gave his partner a large jacket of his to wear on top of the sling.
The baby “appeared to be sleeping” throughout their walk and it wasn’t until they returned back home about 20 minutes later that Sinéad found Ruadhán unconscious, with grey-tinged skin and blood coming from his nose.
Keith’s teenage stepson performed CPR on the tot while they waited 27 minutes for the ambulance to arrive. He was then taken to Children’s Health Ireland.
Ruadhán spent 11 days in the paediatric intensive care unit.
Keith described this time as “11 days of hell.”
What is sudden infant death syndrome?
Most sudden and unexplained deaths happen during the first six months of a baby’s life.
Infants born early or with a low birthweight are usually at greater risk of the syndrome.
Baby boys are usually more commonly affected by sudden infant death syndrome.
It usually happens when a baby is asleep, although it can happen when they are awake.
The exact cause is unknown, but a number of things are thought to be a factor.
Experts think that it can occur at a particular stage in a baby’s development – therefore babies who are vulnerable to certain stresses can be more at risk.
This vulnerability could be due to being born prematurely or having a low birthweight, or for other reasons.
Getting tangled in bedding, tobacco smoke, a minor illness or a breathing obstruction can also be a factor.
A report warns parents to avoid these unnecessary “aids”, such as baby hammocks, cot bumpers, cushioned sleeping pods, pillows, duvets and nests.
Experts urge families to only put their baby to sleep on firm, flat, waterproof surface.
PHE and cot death charity The Lullaby Trust issued the warning in a guide, which came as evidence suggested more than one in three parents has bought or considering buying a sleep aid.
“It was like a war zone. It was the most wretched surreal thing,” he told the court according to breakingnews.ie.
Though Ruadhán’s condition seemed to improve at various points, the tot suffered a bad seizure, leading his parents to decide that they needed to “let him go”, Sinéad said in a written statement.
“Our little boy was ripped from our lives” in a moment of “violence”, Keith recalled.
He said his son’s death had left the family “stumbling through a fog of grief”.
RISKS OF SLINGS
Pathologist Dr Michael McDermott concluded that the little boy had died as a result of SIDS, as a postmortem had been unable to identify any other cause for his collapse.
The tot suffered “significant brain damage as a result of a lack of oxygen to the brain”, he explained.
He said “compromised sleeping positions” were a factor in about half of recent SIDS cases, with the risk of it increasing for babies sleeping in a bed or in their parents’ arms.
In relation to baby slings, Dr McDermott said parents’ clothing as well as the sling’s material and the position a baby is placed in could affect their breathing.
Safety tips for using slings
Slings and baby-carriers are useful for holding a baby hands-free, but there are things you should keep in mind to make sure you’re using them safely.
Though there isn’t much evidence that slings are directly associated with SIDS, The Lullaby Trust says there have been a number of deaths worldwide where infants have suffered a fatal accident from the use of a sling.
These accidents are particularly due to suffocation, and particularly in young babies.
The risk of SIDS is higher when a baby’s airway is obstructed either by their chin resting on their chest or their mouth and nose being covered by a parent’s skin or clothing.
When wearing a sling or baby carrier, keep in mind the TICKS guidelines:
- Tight
- In view at all times
- Close enough to kiss
- Keep chin off the chest
- Supported back
This is to ensure that your baby’s airway is kept clear, and so you can check that they are able to breathe easily and are not overheating.
Complete guidance is available by visiting The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents.
Source: The Lullaby Trust
“There are some risks involved in the use of baby slings,” he observed.
But Dr McDermott stressed that Ruadhán’s parents should not blame themselves for what happened.
“This is a tragic death. This is nobody’s fault. This is not something you did or failed to do,” he added.
Coroner Dr Cróna Gallagher concluded that Ruadhán had died from SIDS while being carried in a sling, “which is an additional risk factor for SIDS” but not a direct cause.
She added that it was a natural instinct for parents to want their baby close to them.
“It wasn’t anybody’s fault. It was a very unfortunate and tragic death,” Dr Gallagher stressed.
‘A BEAUTIFUL BOY’
As the inquest concluded, Keith said not a day goes by that the family doesn’t think about Ruadhán.
He expressed hope that something positive could result from their son’s death, telling the coroner that a charitable foundation had been set up in Ruadhán’s memory and already raised €50,000.
In a written statement, Sinéad described her late son as “a most beautiful, gentle, placid boy with the deepest darkest eyes.”
“I loved you and cherished every moment I had with you,” she said
“By trying to keep him warm and close to me, I put him in harm’s way. I will never forgive myself for that.
“The grief of losing him is unbearable but it is also a testament to how much I loved him. My heart will never heal from the loss.”

‘Longest-living Benjamin Button disease sufferer’, 28, who spent his life trying to find a cure for rare condition dies
THE world’s longest-living survivor of ‘Benjamin Button disease’ who spent his life searching for a cure has died.
Sammy Basso, aged just 28, was diagnosed with the rare genetic disease progeria.
The condition causes sufferers to age rapidly and appear older than they are.
People with progeria generally appear healthy at birth, but symptoms such as slowed growth, loss of fat tissue, and hair loss begin to appear in their first year.
The average life expectancy for an individual with progeria is about 15 years.
Sammy, from the northern Italian region of Veneto, is believed to be the longest-living survivor of the rare genetic disease.
He was diagnosed with the disease aged just over two years old and founded the Italian Progeria Sammy Basso Association with the help of his parents aged 10.
He dedicated his life to raising awareness about the disease, appearing in the the National Geographic documentary “Sammy’s Journey”.
He even wrote his graduate thesis on the possibility of curing progeria through genetic engineering.
Sammy was having dinner with family and friends on the evening of October 5 when he suddenly felt unwell.
Emergency medics were dispatched to the restaurant and tried to resuscitate the young biologist, but their efforts were in vain.
Just a few weeks before his death in Asolo, north-eastern Italy, he had returned from a trip to China.
And the evening before his passing, he was awarded the Paolo Rizzi Journalism Prize in the “Environment and Society” category in Venice.
The organisers cited “his willpower, spirit of sacrifice, and the courage that sustains him”.
Sammy was born in Thiene on 1 December 1995 and lived in Tezze sul Brenta.
In 2005, he founded the Italian Progeria Association to spread knowledge about his condition and to encourage research into it.
He graduated from the University of Padua with a degree in Natural Sciences in 2018.
In 2019, he was made a Knight of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic by President Sergio Mattarella.
He graduated again from the University of Padua in 2021 with a master’s degree in Molecular Biology.
What is progeria?
Hutchinson-Gilford Progeria is a very rare genetic disease that affects one in every 8 million people born.
It’s caused by a mutation in one of the two copies of the LMNA gene.
The mutation causes every cell in the body to malfunction.
People with progeria undergo rapid ageing and have distinct physical characteristics, including:
- Hair loss
- Prominent eyes
- Aged, wrinkled skin
- A thin, beaked nose
- Disproportionately small face compared to head size
- Loss of fat under the skin
There are currently only 130 cases of progeria recognised worldwide, of which four in Italy.
However, this number is underestimated as cases of progeria are often difficult to trace.
Progeria is always fatal.
On average, people with the condition survive 14.5 years, although some adults with progeria will live into their early 20s.
A drug called lonafarnib has been shown to slow down the progression of the disease.
Source: Italian Progeria Sammy Basso Association, Cleveland Clinic
His thesis explored the correlation between progeria and inflammation.
His dream was to work at CERN in Geneva, Switzerland.
Progeria is not hereditary and is instead caused by a mutation in the LMNA gene.
The mutation likely occurs in a single sperm or egg immediately before conception.
There are about 70 children with the disorder worldwide, most of whom will die from heart problems or strokes.
Basso is survived by his parents, who said: “We are deeply grateful for the privilege of having shared part of our journey with him.
“He taught all of us that, even though life’s obstacles may sometimes seem insurmountable, it’s worth living it fully.”

Are you a narcissist? Take the 28-question ‘Dark Tetrad’ personality test to find out
THE TERM ‘narcissist’ is often thrown around to describe people who seem self-absorbed or have a large ego.
Have you ever wondered if it applies to you or a particularly annoying friend or colleague?
Now, a 28-minute test can tell you where you fall on the score of narcissism – as well as three other “negative” personality types.
The five-minute quiz, published on the website Psychological Testing Online, is an online version of the Short Dark Tetrad test, by personality psychology researcher and professor Delroy Paulhus.
It’s designed to assess a set of four interrelated personality traits that are considered to be negative or harmful, according to Psychology Today.
These are narcissism, psychopathy, Machiavellianism, and sadism.
It’s noted on the website that the quiz is meant to be educational and entertaining – it can’t provide a diagnosis of narcissism and shouldn’t be used to diagnose a disease or condition or provide any sort of psychological advice.
To be formally diagnosed with narcissistic personality disorder – a mental health condition characterised by impulsivity, volatility, attention-seeking, and a lack of empathy – you need to be assessed by a psychologist or psychiatrist.
Prof Paulhus defined narcissism as “an egotistical preoccupation with self”.
“Because of all their experience with maintaining their self image, people who score high for narcissism will often appear charming but their narcissism will later lead to extreme difficulty in developing close relationships,” he said
Meanwhile, Machiavellianism is described as a tendency to be manipulative and deceitful and see people as a means to achieve one’s own goals.
Psychopathy is a condition characterised by a lack of empathy and emotional response.
“The relative lack of emotions leads results in high stress tolerance, low empathy, little guilt and leads them to seek extremely stimulating activities, resulting in impulsivity and a disposition towards interpersonal conflict,” Prof Paulhus said.
As for sadism, this means deriving pleasure the pain and humiliation of others.
Completing the 28-part questionnaire will give you an idea of whether you score low, average or high for these four personality traits.
The test first asks whether you’re male or female before presenting a series of 28 statements, to which you have to reply if you “strongly disagree”, “disagree”, “neither agree nor disagree”, “agree” or “strongly agree”.
The quiz opens with the statement: “It’s not wise to let people know your secrets.”
It then goes on to ask whether you think others see you as a natural leader or if others describe you as “out of control”.
According to Dr Erin Buckels, an assistant professor of Psychology and Principal Investigator of the Dark Personality Research Lab at the University of Winnipeg, the Short Dark Tetrad Test assesses four personality themes.
It aims to gauge how “crafty”, “special”, “wild” or “mean” you are.
What is narcissistic personality disorder?
The condition is one of seven types of personality disorders and is named after Narcissus from Greek mythology, who fell in love with his own reflection.
It results in the sufferer being obsessed with the fantasy of unlimited success, power, brilliance and ideal love and beauty and have an inflated sense of their importance coupled with a deep need for excessive attention.
But behind the confidence, sufferers can be extremely vulnerable to slightest criticism and have low self-esteem, the Mayo Clinic reports.
The disorder can also cause problems in many areas of life – including work, relationships and financial affairs.
People with narcissistic personality disorder may be generally unhappy and disappointed when they’re not given the admiration they think they deserve and may find relationships unfulfilling.
According to the Mayo Clinic, sufferers can:
- Have an exaggerated sense of self-importance
- Have a sense of entitlement and require constant, excessive admiration
- Expect to be recognised as superior even without achievements that warrant it
- Exaggerate achievements and talents
- Be preoccupied with fantasies about success, power, brilliance, beauty or the perfect mate
- Believe they are superior and can only associate with equally special people
- Monopolise conversations and belittle or look down on people they perceive as inferior
- Take advantage of others to get what they want
- Have an inability or unwillingness to recognise the needs and feelings of others
- Be envious of others and believe others envy them
- Behave in an arrogant or haughty manner, coming across as conceited, boastful and pretentious
Source: Mayo Clinic
“Watching a fist fight excited me,” is the fourth statement quiz-takers are asked to respond to.
The test goes on to question whether you “have a unique talent for persuading people” or you think “group activities tend to be dull” without you.
It poses questions around how you respond to violence, whether you think manipulation is a useful to achieve what you want and how you view yourself.
“I have some exceptional qualities” is one such statement, as is “I like to show off every now and then”.
At the end of the questionnaire, you’ll be scored on the four personality types on a scale of 1 to 5.
For narcissism, a score of above 3.71 is considered “high”.
As for Machiavellianism, above 4.03 is “high”. For psychopathy, this is 2.64 and sadism 3.14.
