Edgewood boys basketball coach Matt Wadsworth moving on to Hauser
Matt Wadsworth is taking flight from Edgewood.
The Hauser Jets, a Class 1A program coming off their best two-year run since winning the state championship in 2006, is hiring Wadsworth away from the Mustangs, confirmed Hauser athletic director Kyle Shipp on Monday.

Wadsworth spent the last seven seasons at Edgewood, going 88-87 with four winning seasons and always winning at least 10 games.
He is 229-215 overall with stops at Riverton Parke (one year), North Posey (four) and Whiteland (seven).

Edgewood Head Coach Matt Wadsworth instructs his team during the Edgewood versus Sullivan boys basketball game at Edgewood High School on Saturday, Dec. 20, 2025.
Wadsworth poured a lot of time and energy into Edgewood’s youth programs, but won’t be around as those players begin circulating into the high school. He also saw the opening of the new fieldhouse this winter.
“The first thing I’ll say is, we owe Matt a lot in regards to, he came in during COVID and our youth program was struggling,” Edgewood athletic director Jerry Bland said. “Matt got involved and help stabilize our youth program, knowing they would become our athletes.

“He stayed active and helped build the junior high program and provided some travel opportunities our kids may not have gotten. Matt made sure those opportunities were out there and available. A lot of that group is just now reaching the high school, so someone else will see the results. He put a lot of work and time in.”
Interestingly, Whiteland’s current head coach, Nate Cangany, was hired out of Hauser to replace Wadsworth in 2019.
Wadsworth takes over for Trent Moorhead (79-27), who left Hauser after four years to take over at Center Grove. Moorhead lead the Jets to semi-state the past two years, only to lose to the eventual state champs by narrow margins. Moorhead’s brother Brad, now head coach at South Ripley, was an assistant under Wadsworth at Edgewood.
Hauser will play South Ripley on Dec. 11.

Edgewood will get to work quickly on finding a successor, with summer activities right around the corner. The Mustangs are not rushing the process at the expense of making the right hire. As of Monday afternoon, the administration had not received an official letter of resignation from Wadsworth.
“Once the position is open, and I hope that happens soon, we’ll take applications for the next couple of weeks,” Bland said. “And if we get what we need, or a good assortment of candidates, we’ll move to set up interviews.
“In a perfect, ideal world, we’ll have someone in place by the start of June, which is a pretty significant month for basketball.”
A lot of team activities take place in June before players turn to more travel team action in July.

Eastern Greene hires two
Eastern Greene has named a pair of former T-Birds as its new volleyball and girls basketball coaches.
Nathan Martindale, who coached the middle school girls basketball team and is the middle school athletic director, has stepped up to the varsity position. He has also previously coached the EG girls golf team.
The staff includes Josh Cunningham (JV coach), Jarrod Bahr (varsity assistant) and Lexi Brough (volunteer assistant).
Dara James is the new volleyball coach. She has previously coached for Eastern Greene at the middle school level.

St Gotthard storms to 2026 Ken Russell Memorial Classic victory at Gold Coast
The $2.7 million investment in St Gotthard paid handsome dividends as he powered to an emphatic success in Saturday’s Group 3 $200,000 Ken Russell Memorial Classic (1200m) on the Gold Coast.
Trained by Chris Waller, St Gotthard notched his second start and maintained an unblemished record by distancing his opposition.
Jockey James McDonald, riding the colt for the second time, has emerged as his foremost admirer.
“He cost a lot of money but he has a beautiful temperament, killer looks and incredible acceleration – he’s a beauty, he’s all class,” McDonald said.
Starting at $2.40 on course, St Gotthard raced rearward, took the wide path on the corner and surged clear with a devastating burst to win by four expanding lengths from Silken Salute ($8.50), Boomelli ($8.50) third, a length away.
Bred in the purple as a Snitzel colt from imported dam Ms Bad Behaviour at Arrowfield, he is a full-brother to Group 1 conqueror Switzerland and fetched $2.7 million from a Coolmore syndicate at last year’s Inglis Easter Yearling Sale.
Waller, successful with Switzerland too, took a patient stance with St Gotthard rather than forcing him into autumn majors like the Golden Slipper.
He began modestly at Warwick Farm with a strong win, then peaked at the Gold Coast meeting.
Not present at Gold Coast, Waller’s foreman Darren Beadman called the impressive St Gotthard a “classic looking colt”.
“He could have easily lined up in some of the bigger races over the autumn carnival but Chris, being the trainer he is, treats them all as individuals and gave this colt time and it is getting dividends now,” Beadman said.
“It was just nice to see him add another dimension to his race pattern today. They went quite quick up front but he sat back ‘curling the mo’ behind them then let loose in the straight.”
His electric win compressed St Gotthard’s odds from $8 right into $3.50 joint fave with The Next Episode for the Group 2 $1 million BRC Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m) at Eagle Farm on May 30.

In first start since 8-inning gem, Pirates’ Paul Skenes faces Rockies
May 6, 2026; Phoenix, Arizona, USA; Pittsburgh Pirates pitcher Paul Skenes reacts after the eighth inning against the Arizona Diamondbacks at Chase Field. Mandatory Credit: Mark J. Rebilas-Imagn Images Paul Skenes is coming off his best start of the season and arguably his career. And the Pittsburgh Pirates would love to see more of that Tuesday night when they host the Colorado Rockies in the opener of a three-game series.
Skenes (5-2, 2.36 ERA) pitched eight shutout innings and flirted with a perfect game for the first 4 2/3 of those frames while helping the Pirates blank the Diamondbacks 1-0 last Wednesday in Arizona.
Colorado will counter with right-hander Michael Lorenzen (2-4, 6.92) as it tries to avoid a three-game skid after losing the final two games this past weekend in Philadelphia.
Pittsburgh is coming off a frustrating 7-6 loss in 12 innings Sunday at San Francisco and has lost two of three after winning five of its previous six.
Skenes bounced back from a subpar outing April 30 against the St. Louis Cardinals by striking out seven and allowing only two hits over those eight frames against Arizona.
It was the fourth time in his career that Skenes pitched at least eight innings, and he continually kept the ball in play for his defense, inducing 12 fly balls and five ground balls.
He retired the first 14 batters he faced before allowing an infield single to Lourdes Gurriel Jr. and a single to Nolan Arenado. He then retired the final 10 he faced in a row.
“It always goes back to execution,” said Skenes, who is 1-0 with a 3.00 ERA in two career starts against the Rockies. “It’s not easy, but it’s simple. If you execute your pitches, it’s going to go the way you want. These games are fun to pitch in, for sure.” Pittsburgh is hoping Oneil Cruz is beginning to break out of a recent slump. Cruz hit his 10th home run of the season on Sunday after hitting .194 with 39 strikeouts in his previous 22 games.
The Rockies are in a similar hopeful mode when it comes to struggling shortstop Ezequiel Tovar, who had two hits in Sunday’s 6-0 loss to the Phillies.
Tovar recorded his first multi-hit game since April 24 and managed both his hits off Phillies starter Cristopher Sanchez, who is on a streak of 20 2/3 consecutive scoreless innings. Tovar is one of several Rockies struggling at the plate, but his poor start has been eye-opening. Tovar is hitting .197 with a .522 OPS, one home run and 10 RBIs heading into Tuesday’s game.
Tovar has struggled with chasing too many pitches — especially breaking balls — out of the zone from right-handed pitchers. As he prepares to face the reigning National League Cy Young Award winner, Tovar hopes Sunday’s positive results are the start of a turnaround. “I feel more comfortable taking the balls out of the zone, and we’re working on that,” Tovar said. “I’d love to prove I can do that, but I feel better. And as a team, we’re making better decisions.”
Lorenzen is 7-2 with a 2.67 ERA in 44 career appearances (five starts) and 81 innings overall against the Pirates.
The Rockies hope to give Lorenzen any possible run support against Skenes. Lorenzen is coming off a rough outing last Wednesday at home against the Mets, in which he allowed seven runs on 11 hits, including four extra-base hits, walked three and struck out two over five innings in a 10-5 loss.

Roberto De Zerbi expects Tottenham relegation fight to go down to last minute
Roberto De Zerbi believes Tottenham’s fight for survival in the Premier League will go down to the final day after they were held to a 1-1 home draw by Leeds.
Spurs were set to move four points clear of 18th-placed West Ham when Mathys Tel curled wonderfully into the top corner after 50 minutes, but he went from hero to zero in the 69th minute.
After Tottenham dealt with the initial ball into the box, Tel’s attempted overhead kick clearance struck Leeds captain Ethan Ampadu in the face and Dominic Calvert-Lewin tucked away the resulting spot-kick after a lengthy VAR check before a frantic finale failed to produce a winner following Antonin Kinsky’s stunning save to deny visiting substitute Sean Longstaff.
“I think we are in the right way,” De Zerbi insisted.
“It will be tough until the last minute against Everton, for sure but after the Sunderland game, it was a difficult to imagine ourselves before the last two games to stay up two points of West Ham.
“I remember very well the game in Sunderland was my first game and we can’t forget what was the situation just 15 days ago. We can’t forget after four games in a row we made eight points.
“And West Ham they have to also play Leeds at home. I think Leeds they will play like today with the same spirit, with the same qualities.”
After a tense first half where Tel contributed towards the nervous energy inside the stadium with a dangerous ball across the face of his own penalty area, the young French attacker raised the decibel levels in the 50th minute.
Pedro Porro’s corner was cleared to Tel, who took a touch and curled sumptuously beyond Karl Darlow and into the top corner, but his last telling action was a misguided clearance on Ampadu in the 69th minute.
Asked what he would say to Tel, De Zerbi insisted: “A big hug and a big kiss. Nothing more because he is a young player, he is a big talent and he score a great goal.
“He made a mistake for the experience because he has not the right experience and he has not played too many games in his career and we have to accept, but I am proud and I am happy for the mentality we show.”
James Maddison made his first competitive appearance in 12 months and almost provided late drama when he went down inside the penalty area, but referee Jarred Gillett and a quick VAR review ignored spot-kick appeals.
“Great news for us. He is a different player as a quality, as a guy and he will be I hope crucial for us,” De Zerbi added.
The Spurs boss did not want to be drawn on the penalty decision, but took aim at referee Gillett and questioned if the controversial VAR call in Arsenal’s 1-0 win at West Ham on Sunday had influenced the officials.
“I didn’t see and I didn’t watch it again,” De Zerbi reflected.
“The first minute until the end of the game the referee went to me, ‘if you go out, yellow card,’ and I think they were not calm today. Maybe they suffered the pressure of yesterday the West Ham-Arsenal game and VAR.”
West Ham’s defeat on Sunday guaranteed Leeds’ safety, but Daniel Farke promised Tottenham they would give everything on the final day at London Stadium.
Farke said: “We have played an unbelievable season, with an amazing outcome.
“It says a lot about this team to already be on this amount of points and safe with three games to go, it is massive.
“We will fight until the end for each and every point.”

Dodgers activate Mookie Betts from injured list, option Alex Freeland
Los Angeles activated shortstop Mookie Betts from the injured list on Monday and optioned Alex Freeland to triple-A Oklahoma City.
Betts hit the IL on April 5 with a right oblique strain.
The 2018 AL MVP left a 10-5 victory over the Washington Nationals after walking and scoring in the first inning. Manager Dave Roberts said the Dodgers believe Betts was initially injured on a check swing during the at-bat.
Betts was hitting .179 in Los Angeles’ first eight games. The 33-year-old hit .258 with 20 homers and 82 RBIs in 150 games last season.
He completed a two-game rehab stint in triple-A, where he went 2-for-5 with a walk.
Betts will look to boost a slumping Dodgers lineup, which ranks 23rd in baseball with a .660 OPS over the last two weeks.
He will bat second on Monday as L.A. opens a series at home against the San Francisco Giants.

2026 PGA Championship sleeper picks: Who might break out
Fifteen years ago, a dollar bet on Keegan Bradley would’ve won $125.
Ten years ago, a buck on Jimmy Walker would’ve earned the same return.
Five years ago, that wager on Phil Mickelson would’ve brought home $250.
Hmm.
Could the underdog-winning-every-five-years trend continue this week at the PGA Championship? The odds are, well, long. For various reasons, players aren’t favorites, and what’s happened here is very likely coincidental.
Then again, who doesn’t like a good story line?
Should you have some buy-in to that thought, members of our staff have each made a long-shot selection to assist you. It’s an enjoyable endeavor for us. Deploy it as you wish.
On to our analysis.
2026 PGA Championship sleeper picks to watch
Josh Berhow
Sleeper pick: Kristoffer Reitan, +8,000. Don’t overthink it — he just won on Sunday and is still a long shot! All of these guys are good — but it’s hard not to like the one who was just better than everyone through 72 holes.
James Colgan
Sleeper pick: Daniel Berger, +22,500. I probably wouldn’t take him to win this golf tournament, but it wouldn’t shock me if he delivered a surprisingly competitive performance in Philly.
Dylan Dethier
Sleeper pick: Matt McCarty, +15,000. McCarty is playing really, really well. Don’t sleep on him! And let’s plunge much deeper for Ben Polland (+200,000), a talented club pro who could clock a top 40 here if all goes well.
Jack Hirsh
Sleeper pick: Jordan Spieth, +8,000. Let’s have some fun, shall we. Grand slam, here we come.
Jessica Marksbury
Sleeper pick: Min Woo Lee, +6,000. Aronimink feels like a course where Min Woo can shine and play to his off-the-tee strengths. Plus, he’s been trending up recently, finishing tied for 18th at the Cadillac and tied for 14th at last week’s Truist.
Nick Piastowski
Sleeper pick: Gary Woodland, +10,000. This would be one of the better stories in golf — but Woodland has also played solid golf this year. He’s posted four top 25 finishes, including a win.
Josh Schrock
Sleeper pick: Rickie Fowler, +5,000: I’m just going to go back to the sleeper well with Fowler. He has been playing consistently good golf this season and has rediscovered the feel with his putter. Carded top-10s at the RBC Heritage and Doral. Could easily see him contending in Philly with his iron game.
Josh Sens
Sleeper pick: Keegan Bradley, +9,000. His heart might still be broken from the Ryder Cup, but his game has been coming together nicely lately. And we know he relishes the big stages.
Johnny Wunder
Sleeper pick: Patrick Cantlay, +4,500. Great ballpark for him, especially if the scores are low, which I’ve heard they might try to encourage. Pat is still the quiet assassin he’s always been. If he can get into the top of the board early in the week, my hunch is he stays there till the end.

Accidental Bid set for 2026 Rough Habit Plate in Queensland Derby path
Accidental Bid is bound for Queensland seeking a berth in the Queensland Derby.
Ciaron Maher’s charge is programmed to tackle the Group 3 Rough Habit Plate (2000m) this Saturday at Doomben, building towards the Group 1 Queensland Derby (2400m) on May 30 at Eagle Farm.
The three-year-old was all the rage for the Group 1 South Australian Derby (2500m) at Morphettville on May 2 but drew no start as the top emergency.
There’s a nagging doubt in the Maher camp that Accidental Bid could be balloted out of the Rough Habit Plate again, putting his Queensland Derby hopes at risk.
A product of UK breeding, this unbeaten-in-Australia three-year-old captured a 1600m maiden at Pakenham and then went on to win over 2000m at Pakenham last month.
National Assistant Trainer Jack Turnbull of Ciaron Maher Racing revealed Accidental Bid had a gallop at Ballarat last week, proceeded to Sydney, and is due in Brisbane this week.
Turnbull commented that Accidental Bid will be fully tuned up for Saturday despite no start in a month, having journeyed to Adelaide and back to Ballarat.
“We’ve been able to get work into him, factoring in the travel,” Turnbull said.
“He did well, condition wise, without running in the South Australian Derby, so we were happy to gallop Wednesday, knowing that he was going to travel twice in a six-to-eight-day period.
“I don’t think we will be using fitness as a problem, but he will need the run to be fully prepared for the Derby.
“We galloped him the reverse way, and he was very natural, which was helpful and I think he will be spot on for his next race and then he will improve again for the Derby trip.”
The Maher team rolled the dice by transporting Accidental Bid to Adelaide despite low odds of contesting the South Australian Derby.
“He was ready to be led across the road,” Turnbull said.
“We were waiting right until the death with him.
“Ciaron was happy to have the travel as it does bring them on and he’s a placid colt.”

Former NBA Star Desmond Mason Arrested On Felony Warrant As Oklahoma Custody Details Emerge | NBA
Desmond Mason is back in the news, but this time for legal trouble instead of basketball. The former NBA Slam Dunk Contest winner was arrested in Oklahoma last week on a felony warrant linked to a Texas case, according to News 9 and local police reports. Police said Mason was taken into custody in Bricktown on Thursday before being transported to a local hospital because of a medical issue.
After treatment, he was booked into the Oklahoma County Detention Center, where he remained in custody as of Monday morning. Reports from News 9 stated Mason is currently being held on a “flight to avoid” charge, which is often used when someone crosses state lines to avoid prosecution. The case has quickly gained attention because of Mason’s history as a former NBA player and public figure.
According to News 9, the felony warrant connected to Mason comes from Collin County, Texas, and involves an alleged theft of sports memorabilia. Officials said a couple claimed they paid Mason more than $9,000 in March 2025 for custom framing work involving several sports collectibles.
The couple reportedly told investigators they never received the framed memorabilia back after handing the items over to Mason. They also claimed Mason became difficult to contact afterwards and often gave reasons for delays instead of delivering the finished products to them.
Officials later confirmed the missing memorabilia involved in the case is valued at nearly $40,000. Mason was eventually arrested in Oklahoma following the investigation. The former NBA player also faced legal trouble in 2024 after being jailed in Oklahoma City on a contempt of court charge linked to his divorce case.
Desmond Mason Built A Second Career In Oklahoma After His NBA Retirement
Before this latest incident, Desmond Mason was widely known for his athletic NBA career and deep connection to Oklahoma basketball. The former Oklahoma State player entered the NBA as the 17th overall pick in the 2000 draft and later won the 2001 Slam Dunk Contest.
Mason spent nearly a decade in the NBA playing for teams including the Seattle SuperSonics, Milwaukee Bucks, New Orleans Hornets, Oklahoma City Thunder, and Sacramento Kings. After retiring in 2009, he stayed in Oklahoma City and slowly built another public career outside basketball through artwork and business projects.
According to News 9 and Oklahoma City civic records, Mason operated an art studio in Midtown and participated in several community and downtown projects over the years. Authorities have not yet confirmed when Mason could potentially be transferred to Texas as the legal process continues moving forward.

There’s a New Thing Called ‘Vilbert the Viking’
The Minnesota Vikings kicked off rookie minicamp last week, and along the way, the franchise signed a hybrid OLB-DT named Smith Vilbert. Yes, it’s the Vilbert the Viking this summer.
Minnesota’s latest roster flyer brings size, length, and a wonderfully obvious nickname.
Vilbert played with Bill Belichick at North Carolina, so the Belichick-to-Brian-Flores communication pipeline is evidently wide open.
Vilbert Adds Another Oversized Body to Flores’ Front
We have details on Vilbert.

Vilbert to MIN
Minnesota hosted dozens of rookies (and some veterans like quarterback Cooper Rush) last week, and Vilbert actually snagged a contract.
SI.com‘s Will Ragatz wrote, “After the conclusion of their rookie minicamp on Friday, the Vikings signed former Penn State and North Carolina defensive lineman Smith Vilbert to an undrafted free agent contract, according to his agent Brett Tessler. Vilbert was one of 21 rookie tryout players at Friday’s camp and must have impressed the coaching staff in a short time period.”
“Standing nearly 6’6″ and 290 pounds, Vilbert has 34-inch arms and brings some versatility. He lined up mostly as an edge defender in college but can also play on the interior of the D-line. A New Jersey native, Vilbert was a three-star recruit coming out of high school in 2019 and chose Penn State over several other big-time offers.”
Ever since Minnesota discovered defensive tackle Jalen Redmond two years ago, under-the-radar DL additions turn heads for Vikings fans.
The Background
Vilbert embodies a classic “lottery-ticket” addition for the Vikings: a big, long, and experienced prospect who faces a steep climb to the 53-man roster.
Physically, he checks all the boxes, standing at an imposing 6-foot-6 and 282 pounds. His imposing frame gives Minnesota a rookie defensive lineman capable of fitting into various roles, from traditional defensive tackle to five-technique or a larger edge presence. Such versatility is crucial in Flores’ defense, which frequently demands front-seven players to move around, disguise formations, and take on multiple assignments.
However, his college production doesn’t exactly scream “instant-impact rookie.” Though older than the average first-year player, his collegiate resume is more intriguing than dominant. While he showed flashes at both Penn State and North Carolina, Vilbert enters the NFL more as a developmental project than a polished defender ready for immediate contributions. Hence the undrafted free-agent status.
The Vikings have already invested significantly in the defensive line with Caleb Banks and Domonique Orange, so Vilbert’s most realistic path involves showcasing flashes in training camp, earning preseason reps, proving himself on special teams, and potentially securing a practice squad spot.
Nevertheless, his combination of size, length, and positional versatility makes him precisely the type of undrafted or minicamp prospect Flores is keen to develop. Especially if Belichick brokered the deal.

The Viking Age‘s Adam Carlson on Vilbert: “Vilbert played 47 games in college, spending all but 12 of those with Penn State before transferring to North Carolina. His statistics at Penn State were not very impressive, but he got significantly more productive once arriving with ill Belichick at UNC.”
“In those 12 games at North Carolina, Smith Vilbert had 22 combined tackles, including six tackles for a loss and one sack. In addition, he accumulated two pass defenses and recovered two fumbles while forcing one fumble. A six-foot-six, 256-pound defender, Vilbert was projected to be a Day 3 pick in the 2026 NFL Draft, with a comparison to Tennessee Titans defensive lineman Jack Crawford by Brian Dohn at 247 Sports.”
Updated OLB Room
The Vikings’ interior defensive line room has changed substantially since the club released Jonathan Allen and Javon Hargrave. It also traded Jonathan Greenard during the draft.
If Minnesota uses Vilbert as an EDGE rusher, here’s the OLB group at the moment:
OLB1: Andrew Van Ginkel
OLB2: Dallas Turner
OLB3: Bo Richter
OLB4: Tyler Batty
OLB5: Chaz Chambliss
OLB6: Cam’Ron Stewart
OLB7: Jordan Botelho
OLB8: Arden Walker
OLB9: Smith Vilbert
For good measure, though Vilbert has an outside linebacker’s frame, here’s the DT unit:
DE1: Jalen Redmond
DE2: Caleb Banks
DE3: Tyrion Ingram-Dawkins
DE4: Elijah Williams
DE5: Monkell Goodwine
NT1: Domonique Orange
NT2: Levi Drake Rodriguez
NT3: Taki Taimani
Summer Trajectory
Vilbert, of course, is at the very bottom of the Vikings’ 90-man roster. It would actually be strange for Minnesota to strike oil twice in two years on stud defensive linemen out of nowhere: Redmond and Vilbert.

Therefore, Vilbert will likely vie for a practice squad spot at training camp and in the preseason. There, he could bide his time and possibly claw his way up the depth chart.
Remember, though, Belichick helped refine his skill set at North Carolina. There’s a small chance that he could be a diamond in the rough.
