Eurovision Song Contest viewers were seen showing their support for Sam Battle, aka Look Mum No Computer

Eurovision fans in the UK were seen showing their support for Sam Battle, aka Look Mum No Computer, after the latest dismal result for the country in the 2026 edition of the Song Contest.

The big European party took place in Vienna, Austria, with the 70th edition of the world’s biggest music event broadcast live at the Wiener Stadthalle after JJ claimed victory in last year’s competition, which took place in Basel, Switzerland.

Twenty-five countries took to the stage, with Look Mum No Computer the 14th act to perform on the night. He performed his song Eins, Zwei, Drei while dancing energetically with people dressed as computers.

At one point, Battle attempted to get the crowd to sing with him, chanting: “When I say eins, you say zwei.” The YouTube star wore a pink boiler suit as performers in fluffy headwear danced in a mock workshop, while he played a synthesiser, and ended up in a cardboard box.

But it wasn’t to be for the UK again this year as at the end of the jury and public vote results, Bulgaria won with 516 points, while Israel finished in second with 343 points, and Australia completed the contest in the top three with 287 points.

The winner was determined by a combination of points from national juries and viewer votes in the participating 25 countries, along with a separate rest of the world poll.

The UK received no points from the public vote for the fourth year in a row, leaving us in last place. The result meant that Look Mum No Computer had just one point from the event. Previous UK entries Remember Monday, Olly Alexander and Mae Muller also received no points from the public vote.

It came after the UK was left at the joint bottom of the table in the 2026 grand final of the Eurovision Song Contest following the results of the jury vote. Look Mum No Computer was tied on one point with Austria’s Cosmo, before they received five points from the audience vote.

But the support for Sam has been flooding in. @HearFifiCalling said: “Also seeing Sam teary made me sad YOU MADE US PROUD #eurovision.” @ok_jnr commented: “Welp, it’s been fun! In any and every case, Sam of Look Mum No Computer is an absolute legend and hero through and through! #Eurovision.”

@caitlinspersona wrote: “I don’t care what the points say. sam has done us proud, a talented man with a fantastic personality. he’s been genuine, funny and got the whole place jumping. thank you sam! LOOK MUM ONE POINT FOREVER #eurovision.” @JuneGloom20 shared: “Look Mum, One Point. Sam didn’t deserve that. Remember Monday didn’t deserve it either. #Eurovision #Eurovision2026.” @VickyCosgrove89 added: “FFS, what a joke! You did us proud Sam and you deserved better!! #Eurovision.”

Terra Sarda Wines was co-founded by Sue Scott, an English writer, and Candido Cogoni, a Sardinian restaurateur.

The couple also run the Pane and Vino restaurant in Pocklington, which also sells the wine, in addition to a website and events.

Sue is originally from Surrey and has a background in business and consumer magazines.

Candido came to the UK as a teenager and joined family members working in Italian/ Sardinian restaurants in the UK. He went on to open one in Norton and then Pocklington.

Sue and Candido’s paths crossed when she took a job as the Business Editor for a local newspaper in the north east and moved near to York. 

She met Candido just over ten years ago, who was running Pane e Vino with his brother Salvatore.

The locals were enthralled by the tales of growing up in Sardinia, which led the brothers to organise trips to the island, where they would be hosted by their mother Mamma Antoinetta.

Sue saw a business opportunity and created Terra Sarda Tours, which featured personally hosted tours, visiting farms, vineyards and kitchens.

That proved popular until Covid struck in 2020, and the couple realised if they cannot take guests to Sardinia, they can bring a taste of Sardinia to the UK, which led to the launch of Terra Sarda Wines in March 2024.

Sue explained: “TSW is an experiential wine store – we don’t just want to sell people our wines, we want to share the story behind them and connect them with other wine lovers. 

“So, we hold ‘Wine Storytelling’ events across Yorkshire – including major festivals, such as the York Food & Drink Festival, and public events, but also private parties.

“And we have developed a format called ‘Sip & Connect With…’ that can be used by any organisation or business as an ice-breaker for networking or special events.

“And, for anyone, who wants to really understand Sardinia and its wines, they can join us for a tour on the island – even picking their own grapes.“

Sardinian wines, she continues, are poorly recognised but premium. The island was the birthplace commercial winemaking in the Western Mediterranean.

It’s hero grape, related to French Grenache and Spanish Garnacha, is Cannonau and has been grown for 3,500 years.

With Sardinian wines rarely known, the couple set out to change that, offering the broadest range of Sardinian wines in the UK.

Sue said: “TSW’s originally launched as a subscription wine club and its demographic was older sophisticated winelovers aged 45 and over who were in or approaching early retirement and had time to entertain and travel.”

But its customer target and marketing changed quite dramatically when it took part in a sustainability project with the University of York.

By default, the poor Sardinian growers were already sustainable as they did not have the resources to invest in chemical treatments, fertilisers and machinery.

Instead, by default they worked with nature, which meant much smaller yields and some vineyard suppliers producing fewer than 2,000 bottles a year.

A less-intervention approach, not using chemicals, also meant that the wines were already organic, natural or sustainable, so these farmers did not need to waste money on such certification to gain a competitive advantage.

Instead, Terra Sarda Wines worked with the university’s sustainability clinic, which led to improvements in its supply chain, such as using electric vehicles, finding less carbon intensive ways to transport the wine and using lighter packaging.

Sue continued: “Customers are really excited by the sustainability story, the provenance and the human connection we can offer through tastings and direct contact with our winemakers.”

As these wines are artisan products made in small amounts, they are not at bottom shelf prices, but an average £23 a bottle .

Sue added: “Perhaps what differentiates Terra Sarda Wines, is that we know all our winemakers individually and that inspires the stories we tell.”

The third rounds of golf tournaments are commonly known as ‘moving day’, and Saturday at the US PGA Championship lived up to the billing as stars and lesser lights jostled for position on a crowded and fast-moving leaderboard.

Remarkably, 14 players held at least a share of the lead at some point and 30 will go into Sunday’s final round within five shots of surprise leader Alex Smalley who is at six under after a two-under 68.

Over the first two days at Aronimink, with the more severe aspects of the course set-up generating much discussion, it felt more like the brutal examination usually reserved for the US Open.

Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy – the world’s top two players – were among those to weigh in with less than complimentary observations, with the former going as far as describing some of Friday’s pin positions as “absurd”.

The PGA of America listened. The governing body moved some tees up and made several pins more accessible which, coupled with more benign conditions, has produced a classic major leaderboard that houses a mix of heavy hitters and less illustrious names.

Several big-time players capitalised on more favourable scoring conditions in the early stages.

McIlroy, who was outside the top 100 after a four-over opening 74 on Thursday, bettered Friday’s 67 by one to improve to three under and boost his hopes of following last month’s successful Masters defence with his third US PGA title.

Other major winners to vault up the leaderboard included Justin Rose, whose superb 65 left him at two under and revived his hopes of landing an elusive second major, and Jon Rahm, who is two off the lead after carding a 67 to maintain his push for the third leg of a career Grand Slam.

Rose isn’t the only man trying to end a 107-year wait for an English winner of this championship, with Aaron Rai alongside Rahm, Ludvig Aberg, Nick Taylor and Matti Schmid on four under.

Not everyone prospered. Scheffler, who shot a Saturday 65 on his way to winning last year’s US PGA, surprisingly stuttered to a 71 and is five adrift.

Try to erase history is something I associate with the authoritarian regimes of North Korea and the Soviet Union, though I know that other countries have done similar things.

Accepting that whoever is in power can change the history of a city or a nation is a slippery slope.

It is a fact that the man did unveil the plaque for the Millennium Bridge. I would be more comfortable if the plaque simply acknowledged how things subsequently turned out.

How about a plaque that read: THE YORK MILLENNIUM BRIDGE, This plaque was unveiled by Andrew Mountbatten Windsor on 29 MAY 2001 prior to his losing his titles as a prince and as Duke of York.

That way you aren’t trying to rewrite history, you are putting it into context.

Plaque covering can’t alter history

Some years ago in America, Wall Mart, one of the most popular department stores over there, suggested that The Beatles album cover of Abbey Road should be altered because Paul McCartney was holding a cigarette.

This attempt to censor a piece of history failed. The now Andrew Mountbatten Windsor may be an embarrassment, may be crass, may be incredibly insensitive …but, when he WAS Prince Andrew, he DID open York’s Millennium Bridge and no amount of plaque covering can alter that.

Imagine if it was suddenly discovered that Da Vinci was a rapist or Beethoven was a paedophile, would they be stricken from history?

Would their paintings or music be banned? Just because someone screws up royally (pun intended) in the present, it does not mean that their past deeds should be erased also.

There are still a million documentaries about Hitler being broadcast daily and I don’t think that – fascists aside – many people think he was OK.

Like Derek Reed I too can just remember the air display. We watched it picnicking with family friends from the top of one of the bomb shelters behind their farm in Rawcliffe village.

Though a very small child at the time, I can recall lots of noises and planes which  undoubtedly started my lifelong interest in all things aviation.

Being brought up next to the disused Clifton Airfield, I can say that it was the ultimate kids’ playground with toilets, taps and, in one hut, a working phone!

I must confess though, we may have contributed to the rapid deterioration of some of the facilities!

Callum Davison has been appointed fire station manager, Owen Reed has been promoted to watch manager, and Chris Brennan has stepped into the role of crew manager within the airport’s Rescue and Firefighting Service.

The team operates around the clock, with more than 40 firefighters working in rotation to keep flights and airport operations running safely through emergency response and regular safety inspections.

Paul Farmer, director of operations at Newcastle Airport, said: “Callum, Owen and Chris have each demonstrated exceptional commitment, professionalism and leadership throughout their time with our Rescue and Firefighting Service.

“Their promotions show how Newcastle Airport invests in its people and provides clear pathways for development and progression and I would like to congratulate all three on their well-deserved appointments.”

Collectively, Mr Davison, Mr Reed and Mr Brennan have 33 years of experience and play key roles in supporting day-to-day operations and training colleagues.

Recently, Mr Davison and Mr Reed joined teammates in a charity challenge that saw them climb Scafell Pike while wearing full fire kit and breathing apparatus.

The fundraising effort raised £2,344 for True Colours Theatre, the airport’s official charity partner.

Mr Davison said: “I’m incredibly proud to be promoted to Station Manager at Newcastle Airport’s Rescue and Firefighting Service.

“Working at the Airport has given me the opportunity to develop my skills and progress through the ranks, and there’s no greater feeling than knowing our team plays a vital role in helping to keep colleagues and passengers safe.”

Mr Reed said: “Becoming Watch Manager is a big milestone for me,” while Mr Brennan said: “I’m delighted to be promoted to crew manager.”

As one of the North East’s largest employers, Newcastle Airport is one of the North East’s largest employers, with around 3,500 people working on site in more than 120 job roles across 20 departments.

An additional 17,000 jobs are supported through its supply chain.

The airport is known for its workplace culture and focus on career development, which was reflected in the results of a recent staff survey.

Seven roads are set to be closed this weekend in and around the town.

Bull Wynd

Bull Wynd will be closed from April 27 until July 3.

Restrictions are expected to remain in place throughout this period for carriageway works.

Royal Oak Yard

Royal Oak Yard will face closures from April 13 until May 17.

The restrictions are set to remain in place for carriageway works during this time.

Church Lane, Sadberge

Church Lane in Sadberge is currently closed due to ongoing works that began on May 5.

The restrictions are scheduled to remain in place until May 26 for major utility works.

Burtree Lane

Burtree Lane will be closed on May 17 for planned utility asset works.

The restrictions are set to remain in place for the day, affecting the area from behind 7 Portreath Court to behind 2 Princess Road.

Harrowgate Village

Harrowgate Village is undergoing highway improvement works, with closures in effect since March 2025 and expected to last until July 31.

The restrictions are in place for footway, carriageway, and verge improvements.

Beaumont Hill

Beaumont Hill is also closed for highway improvement works, with the same timeline as Harrowgate Village.

Restrictions are set to remain in place for ongoing development works.

Mill Lane, Redworth

Mill Lane in Redworth is closed from May 11 to May 20 for new service connection.

The restrictions are expected to remain in place for the duration of the works.
