Carson Daly has one request for his children when they start dating.

“The only reservation I would have for my kids would be, like, [dating] a vegan or something like that maybe,” Daly, 52, said during the Monday, May 19, episode of Today With Jenna and Sheinelle.

Following Daly’s confession, the behind-the-scenes crew burst into laughter.

“Is that bad to say? Am I gonna get canceled for that?” Daly asked.

Cohost Jenna Bush Hager had some questions for Daly and asked if he just wanted his children’s future partners to be able to eat meat. (Daly shares four children: Jackson, 17, Etta, 13, London, 11, and Goldie, 6, with wife Siri Pinter.)

“Yeah, I mean, look at me!” Daly responded before elaborating on his mindset about people with dietary preferences. “Food is, like, a really important part of, like, the fabric of our family.”

He continued, “If we didn’t have food, I wouldn’t talk to my wife about anything. It holds us together. So if one of them brought home a date who was super picky. Like, ‘I don’t eat anything — fish from the sea, cows that go moo.’ Like, I’ve got a Traeger [smoker], bro.”

Daly also clarified he didn’t include people with food allergies in his disdain for picky eaters.

“I’m not the devil! I don’t wish illness on boyfriends!” he quipped.

Daly explained that his worries stem from imagining one of his kids bringing over a partner who i s unable to eat anything they prepared during a family meal.

“I’m just saying it would suck if they came into the house on a Sunday, and we were going to do, like, a big Daly feast, we make pizzas, and they were like, ‘I can’t eat anything.’ I would just be like, ‘He’s a loser. Dump him,’” he said.

While Daly is safe from his children dating a vegan for the time being, the morning show host is nearing a big milestone with son Jackson, who is gearing up to go to college next year. Daly has joked he wants to get a place near the school.

“I’m looking for real estate around the university,” Daly quipped on Monday. “Every time we drive by LIU Post out on Long Island, I’m like ‘Buddy, we’re gonna get a sick apartment here. I’m going to hang out. It’s gonna be great.’ In my mind, I’m going with him to college. The reality hasn’t hit yet.”

Ask someone to name the most popular action shows of the 80s, and chances are you’ll hear Miami Vice, A-Team, Knight Rider, Magnum P.I., and maybe even The Fall Guy before they remember one of the most popular shows of the decade: Airwolf. Even if you’ve never seen a single episode of the helicopter action series, you know exactly what it’s all about.

For a season or two, Airwolf seemed like it was on the verge of being the coolest television show of all time. Until it fell out of the sky in a flaming ball of fire. Destroyed by drug addicted stars, ill-advised character deaths, and a budget crunch that left the show flying around the equivalent of Hot Wheels helicopters on screen instead of actually shooting flying sequences.

This is why Airwolf failed.

Airwolf Began As A Magnum P.I. Spinoff

The concept for Airwolf actually began as a Magnum P.I. spinoff. Helicopter stunts were already a major part of Magnum, and series creator Donald P. Bellisario had an idea to take it further.

So, in season 3 of Magnum P.I., he did an episode called “Two Birds of a Feather,” intending to turn its events into a spinoff show. It involves an ace pilot and treasure hunter named Sam Houston Hunter, whom Magnum knows from his Vietnam days. 

Sam was played by William Lucking; the idea was to make a spinoff show starring the Sam character. Bellesario had already worked with Lucking on projects like In Search Of The Gold Monkey, another good candidate for a Why It Failed someday.  The concept didn’t quite work out, but it was eventually retooled into Airwolf, a far more unique take on the idea of a tortured ace pilot than the one on display in Bellisario’s Magnum PI episode.

The Best Main Character Name In Fiction

Airwolf stars Jan-Michael Vincent as a character with the most amazing name in the entire history of fiction. He’s military test pilot Stringfellow Hawke. His chief character trait is that he likes to hang out in the wilderness, brooding while he plays the cello. Stringfellow Hawke. Get it? 

His friends call him String for short. Maybe I should say friend. Because String is the most introverted action hero of all time, and he doesn’t do a lot of hanging out. 

Through a series of double-crosses, Stringfellow finds himself in possession of the ultimate experimental stealth helicopter, a high-tech sci-fi machine capable of traveling at super speeds and defeating everything else in the air. Refusing to give the chopper back, String ends up with every government and shadowy organization in the world out for his head. 

He hides the helicopter, named Airwolf, in the coolest desert lair imaginable and uses it for his own purposes. Those purposes often involve String rescuing hot belly dancers from the desert or blowing up bad-guy terrorists in inferior flying machines.

The exterior shots of the lair, which are often revisited in the show, are from Monument Valley on the Arizona/Utah border. The interior shots, with the helicopter taking off, are studio-built, with the show combining practical location footage with effects and sets for the helicopter cave hangar feel.

Season 1 features Hawke working for and against The Firm, an obviously evil organization that happens to be the lesser of many evils, in a series of missions that happen to reflect the real-world flashpoints of the Cold War. 

It’s dark, it’s atmospheric, and String is forced to make decisions with no good answer. The episodes’ focus on geopolitical drama gives it greater stakes than you’d ever expect from a show about a super helicopter. 

Made With A Rented Helicopter And Some Fiberglass

If Airwolf were filmed today, the super helicopter would probably be some sort of boring CGI construct, but for Airwolf, especially in season one, they had a real chopper that they went out and filmed doing amazingly cool stuff.

Surprisingly, the studio didn’t own the actual helicopter they filmed. Instead, they leased a Bell 222 from JetCopters Inc. in Van Nuys, California, and then dressed it up with fiberglass to make it look awesome. Those cosmetic additions are reported to have significantly improved the helicopter’s handling; the pilots loved them, and they enabled them to do all kinds of stunts they might not have pulled off as well without them. 

A Great First Season Followed By Disaster

Season 1 was, in retrospect, the high point of Airwolf, with the following two seasons devolving into hokey action more in line with Knight Rider than a Tom Clancy novel. After season one, the amazing aerial dogfights that made the show were noticeably getting shorter and less cinematic. 

Yet in the show’s defense, when that theme song kicks in, and Hawke lands the fatal missile, it’s still as awesome the 20th time as it is the first time. 

Later, Ernest Borgnine, who played Hawke’s only real friend and backer, Dominic Santini, was written off the show in one of the most dramatic ways possible during season 4. They wrote off his character to the point where there was no doubt he wasn’t coming back. 

Success Destroys Jan-Michael Vincent And Airwolf

At first, the show was a huge, huge hit. The two-hour pilot, “Shadow of the Hawke” debuted after the Super Bowl in 1984 and was watched by a whopping 77 million viewers.

As the series exploded in popularity, Jan-Michael Vincent, who was already a multiple-time Golden Globe winner, found himself, almost overnight, the highest-paid star on television. CBS knew that without him, there was no show. His epic performance was the key to everything Airwolf did, and it set the dark and brooding tone for the entire show.

Unfortunately, the real world outside the show destroyed Jan-Michael Vincent. Haunted by personal demons encouraged by the sudden windfall, Vincent’s extreme alcoholism made him impossible to work with. 

In a rare move, CBS canceled the entire show after season 3. The ratings were sagging, the budget was cut, and Vincent’s behavior made CBS want out. 

Airwolf Season 4 Isn’t The Same Show

After season 3, Airwolf was sold off to the basic cable network USA for a complete, top-to-bottom retooling with an all-new cast. USA didn’t get the real helicopter in the sale, forcing the last round of episodes to rely on old footage, or, in some hilarious cases, the toy replica filling in. 

Jan-Michael Vincent, once one of Hollywood’s most promising and talented actors, was now out of work and would never recover, and his entire life devolved into a mess of addiction and misery after the show ended. That’s why most Airwolf fans pretend the series ended when Jan-Michael Vincent left. 

Peak 1980s TV

Though the show fell apart behind the scenes, there’s no greater example of peak 1980s TV action. Airwolf combined Cold War paranoia, hokey action, a bombastic synth score, and a charismatic leading man into the perfect 80s package that could never be replicated. 

Other shows tried, including Street Hawk, which is basically just Airwolf with a motorcycle, but they all crashed and burned. Miami Vice and The A-Team were remade for the big screen. We even somehow got a Dukes of Hazzard movie. But no one has dared bring back Stringfellow Hawke and his cello. The world’s still not ready for Airwolf.

Luckily, the original show is available on free streaming, and it’s still worth a watch. Just make sure to eject before the start of season 4.

Sci-fi has taken audiences to outer space, alternate universes, dystopian futures, and post-apocalyptic wastelands. The genre has also pushed real scientific theories to their limits, exploring what could happen when technology, time travel, or artificial intelligence are toyed with in the wrong hands. But beyond all the elaborate displays and mind-bending concepts, sci-fi can also be deeply human.

Some of sci-fi’s most thought-provoking shows are not about saving the galaxy, but about relationships, grief, identity, loneliness, and the emotional consequences of living in an increasingly modern world. That is where soft sci-fi comes in with their stories, although some gems have gone underappreciated over the years in the sci-fi discourse. Here are the near-perfect soft sci-fi shows that no one remembers today.

‘Warehouse 13’ (2009–2014)

Warehouse 13 is home to a bunch of unusual paraphernalia: Bruce Lee‘s punching bag, W.C. Fields‘ juggling balls, and even the aspiring bottle of Benjamin Franklin. After saving the President’s life, Secret Service agents Pete Lattimer (Eddie McClintock) and Myka Bering (Joanne Kelly) are assigned to the secretive Warehouse 13 in South Dakota.

Fans of The X-Files and Raiders of the Lost Ark will get a kick out of Warehouse 13. It’s a quirky take on stuffy government bureaus, and the investigations are nothing short of adventurous. But the true beating heart of the show is the cast itself, as the agents share mismatched yet adorkable energy reminiscent of Brooklyn Nine-Nine.

‘Soulmates’ (2020)

Set 15 years in the future, Soulmates takes place in a world where dating is made easier thanks to a company called Soul Connex. Supposedly, they have developed a test that can identify whether a person is biologically destined to love most with 100% accuracy. Each standalone episode follows the people whose lives are changed after taking the test.

Dating can be a hassle these days, and conveniences like online dating promise a surefire way of finding “the one” by matching people based on their preferences. However, Soulmates challenges whether a man-made contraption can truly determine something as intangible as love. Two people might be compatible on paper, but the real test of true love is time.

‘Tales from the Loop’ (2020)

Referred to as the anti-Black Mirror, the anthology Tales from the Loop follows “The Loop,” an underground facility stationed beneath Mercer, Ohio. Its scientists are tasked with testing out the usual sci-fi phenomena, from time travel and alternate realities, to body-swapping and antigravity. Instead of a single POV, Tales from the Loop is told from a bunch of interconnected human stories.

Although the technological development itself is intriguing, Tales from the Loop doesn’t go too deep into its mechanics, instead focusing more on the lingering feelings heightened by these inventions. No matter how advanced the facility is, human emotions remain the same. A leap through time becomes a moment of reflection on the past, while two friends learn about each other’s true lives through body-swapping.

‘Ascension’ (2014)

Set aboard a massive generation ship launched during the Cold War, Ascension follows the descendants of 600 volunteers traveling to colonize a distant planet and preserve humanity. 51 years into the century-long mission, a shocking murder occurs on the ship — the very first since the Ascension launched into space.

There’s a certain paranoia that comes from being in a locked room. But being aboard a floating spaceship in the middle of outer space is another level of claustrophobia. Apart from the murder mystery — which risks everything the mission has worked hard for — Ascension slowly reveals the decline of humanity when personal space is no longer afforded in such conditions.

‘Constellation’ (2024)

After a collision aboard the International Space Station kills one astronaut and cripples the crew’s escape systems, Swedish ESA astronaut Jo Ericsson (Noomi Rapace) is left behind to repair a damaged Soyuz module alone. She eventually returns to Earth with her crewmate’s body, but she has a difficult time remembering things, as if her mind and body are still stuck in outer space.

Trauma is a touchy and nuanced subject. Although Constellation is rooted in quantum mechanics and parallel universes, it doesn’t take an astronaut to understand Jo’s disorientation after the tragedy. The inconsistencies in her life reflect how someone struggles to piece together reality while still being tethered to the past, highlighting the show’s ability to explore motherhood, grief, and memory.

‘Eureka’ (2006–2012)

Eureka is set in a secret high-tech town in Oregon inhabited by brilliant scientists and operated by Global Dynamics under the U.S. Department of Defense. When a failed experiment incapacitates the town sheriff, U.S. Marshal Jack Carter (Colin Ferguson) unexpectedly takes the role. Though surrounded by geniuses, Carter relies on his practical instincts, people skills, and determination to keep Eureka safe from scientific disasters.

Eureka is a charming, small-town, case-of-the-week show that is lighthearted enough for a casual watch, but still tickles your brain with all the science behind it. Although the people who work there are military-trained deputies or brilliant engineers, what really makes them shine are their oddball personalities. The best part is that these differences are celebrated in Eureka.

‘Continuum’ (2012–2015)

Continuum follows Kiera Cameron (Rachel Nichols), a police officer from 65 years in the future who becomes stranded in present-day Vancouver alongside the ruthless terrorist group Liber8. Desperate to return home, Kiera teams up with teenage tech genius Alec Sadler (Erik Knudsen), using her futuristic CMR technology to track the criminals before they alter history and reshape the future she came from.

Continuum is a commentary on systemic issues, which are presented as part of a society that certain organizations believe is ultimately for the greater good. Because of this moral ambiguity, viewers are pushed to question whether these actions are truly right or wrong. This also forces Kiera to make difficult choices, as she becomes increasingly torn between preserving her timeline and adapting to the past.

‘Awake’ (2012)

It’s hard enough to solve a crime in one lifetime, let alone two. Awake follows detective Michael Britten (Jason Isaacs) after a tragic car accident splits his life into two realities: one where his wife Hannah (Laura Allen) survives, and his son Rex (Dylan Minnette) dies, and another where Rex lives while Hannah is gone. As Michael solves different cases in each world with separate partners and therapists, he begins to uncover the truth behind the crash.

Although the alternate reality premise is pure sci-fi, Awake follows a familiar procedural format that is surprisingly easy to digest. That does not lessen the surrealism of constantly shifting between two realities and using clues from one timeline to solve crimes in the other. With family at the heart of the conflict, Michael ultimately finds himself trying to protect the fragments of two separate lives at once.

‘Dispatches from Elsewhere’ (2020)

Say goodbye to existential crisis in Dispatches from Elsewhere. Four lonely strangers — all of whom are disconnected from their lives — get caught up in a random citywide puzzle hidden in plain sight. Through cryptic clues and surreal “Dispatches from Elsewhere” missions, the group is pulled into a strange underground game that changes the way they see themselves.

Featuring an alternate reality game (ARG) as its central driving force, Dispatches from Elsewhere keeps its story intriguing through puzzles, psychological illusions, and strange coincidences. Things get out of hand when an injured stranger suddenly shows up out of nowwhere.

Instead of genius scientists or tech-savvy youngsters, Night Sky takes a unique approach by putting elders like Franklin and Irene in the spotlight. The two are ordinary people grappling with aging, and the last thing they should be dealing with is an intergalactic fugitive on the run. Yet what they lack in mobility and technical knowledge, they make up for with warmth and compassion, which become their greatest strengths.

The Stranger snuck onto Netflix with minimal fanfare the same way it stalks its way into viewers’ minds, leaving lingering chills and a lasting impression well after the credits roll. This serial killer movie is based on a true story, where a person of interest (named Henry Teague in the film and played by Sean Harris) was suspected of abducting a child and the Australian police force launched a sting operation to coax out a confession. The true story is horrifying enough, but director Thomas M. Wright’s film is a masterclass in dread, allowing the creeping feeling to pervade each element of the narrative, atmosphere and characters. Joel Edgerton also joins the cast as undercover cop Mark, who works closely with Henry, delivering a haunting performance that adds to how a crime can impact anyone associated with it.

‘The Stranger’ Is Based on a True Story

Everything about The Stranger grips you in a cocoon of dread, even from the very beginning where the words “based on a true story” flash across a black screen. It is inspired by a real Australian sting operation that occurred during an 8-year manhunt for Brett Peter Cowan, who was investigated for abducting and murdering 13-year-old Daniel Morcombe (James Liston in the film). As Edgerton told The Sydney Morning Herald, the names of everyone had been changed to protect their identities, not even meeting with the real undercover cop “because [they] were investigating the truth, taking that truth and telling a fictionalized version of it, which is about protecting everyone involved.”

Mark’s real counterpart did indeed befriend the suspect and drew him into a fake crime ring that the police set-up in hopes of recording a confession, which is legal and admissible in court in Australia. The film is based on a book that detailed the covert operation, The Sting: The Undercover Operation That Caught Daniel Morcombe’s Killer by crime reporter Kate Kyriacou, but much of the story is fictionalized. This allows The Stranger to convey the true dread that eclipsed every part of the investigation, made more effective by Wright’s strong direction. The film flashes between Mark and Henry working together and the background police work, constantly reminding us that Henry, who comes off as a regular albeit strange man, is actually far more sinister underneath.

Dread Creeps Into the Atmosphere of ‘The Stranger’

We are constantly reminded of Mark’s goal and await the confession, creating an impending sense of doom to the friendship and the ordeal. When we first meet Henry, he is meeting a stranger on the bus who introduces him to Mark and offers him a job in this elusive crime enterprise. Harris masters the vacant stare of a haunted man and frequently mutters he “doesn’t do violence,” creating an eerie screen presence that unwillingly draws our eyes to him. As the film and the central “friendship” progress, Harris pairs his enigmatic air with convulsions of mania, sending waves of shock through us as he disrupts the quiet gloom of the film.

Dim lighting strains our eyes throughout the film, interrupted mainly by cold and harsh scenes of the police work, helmed by Jada Alberts as the lead detective. The darkness makes the events feel corrupt and underhanded, as if it is corroding the film from the inside, burdened by the weight of its material. Combined with the creeping score, each narrative beat leaves us deeply unsettled. Meanwhile, the white lights of the police scenes and Alberts’ somber narration act as a guiding truth and exposition that reminds us of our purpose, inducting us into the investigation too.

Edgerton Plays a Haunted Undercover Cop in ‘The Stranger’

The dread curdled up by these events leaves no one untouched, especially Mark, who has to deal with the cost of a secret identity and the impact Henry’s darkness has on him. Edgerton’s heavy performance portrays the burden of this traumatic kind of work, as he keeps his sentences short and his gaze is often adrift when not undercover. Even the disguise aspect is disturbing, as he sports the rugged beard and hunched demeanor that mirrors Henry, allowing the similarities to subliminally connect them. This is made even more disconcerting through the innocuous scenes of Mark with his son, reminding us of the inner turmoil he must feel — he is trying to befriend and identify with a suspected child killer.

Wright assiduously explores Mark’s inner conflicts with dream sequences that are woven seamlessly into the narrative. He is frequently woken up by the face of Henry pervading his dreams, with one distinct nightmare tapping into his paternal love, where Henry sits serenely at the base of his son’s bed. Mark’s fears, uncertainties and the undulating pressure placed on him are manifested in these doom-laden scenes, building the inescapable dread as the consequences of this sting operation claim Mark, Henry, police officers and us in its dark grip.

Mandy Moore is getting real about the “upsetting” drama that occurred between her and fellow celebrity, Ashley Tisdale. Speaking with Andy Cohen on his radio show, “Radio Andy,” the “This Is Us” star said that the feud between her and the Disney Channel alum cut her “to the core” because it painted her in a negative light.

For those who may be unfamiliar, Tisdale wrote in January 2026 for The Cut about leaving her “toxic” mom group, claiming the group of celebrity moms intentionally left her out of hangouts and group events.

While Tisdale didn’t name names, the internet concluded she was referring to Duff, Moore, and other celebs, including Meghan Trainor. “I was starting to feel frozen out of the group, noticing every way that they seemed to exclude me,” Tisdale wrote in her essay.

She eventually said that she chose to leave the group, but not before sending a final text, which read, “This is too high school for me, and I don’t want to take part in it anymore.”

During Mooe’s chat with Cohen, she seemed to confirm that the essay was about her, calling the public letter “very upsetting.”

Moore Said It Was ‘Wild’ For Ashley Tisdale To Speak So Publicly About Their Circle Of Friends

“It’s wild to have anybody talk about your life, and I know Hilary [Duff] has sort of mentioned this too,” Moore said. “It’s like we both have grown up in this business and had people dissect who we are and the choices we make and all of that, but this was something altogether different and decidedly way more upsetting.”

She added, “It just cuts to the core.”

For Moore, she didn’t seem too worried about what Tisdale said, but more so about how it would shape people’s thoughts about her.

“The most important thing in my life is being a kind person and like that legacy of kindness, and anyone even insinuating that that might not be the case, and with the company that I choose to keep, is very upsetting,” she said. I’d say that was the biggest takeaway, sort of the shock of like, ‘Wow.’”

Moore Says She Wouldn’t Have Handled The Situation The Same Way Ashley Tisdale Did

As the conversation continued, Moore said that while she’s not fond of confrontation, she would’ve found a different way to handle her issues with a friend.

“It’s not always like the most comfortable of situations, but I think that’s where I sort of differed in feeling like I wouldn’t have handled the situation this way,” she said.

Continuing, Moore said that another reason her fallout with Tisdale hurt was that it reinforced stereotypes about female friend groups.

“… it just sort of it perpetuates this silly trope that women can’t be supportive of one another and that we’re inherently petty and that we’re inherently out to one-up each other, and I have not felt that one iota since becoming a parent,” she said.

Duff Said She’s Dealt With Friendship Fallouts Before

Duff also spoke out about the drama with her Disney peer, according to a previous report from The Blast, saying that she was used to dealing with issues like this.

“I mean, this is not new for me,” she said. “I’ve had this since I was maybe 15 and starting to get followed around by paparazzi.”

Before that, Duff spoke with Jake Shane on his podcast, “Therapuss,” and said that she’s developed stellar discernment over the years regarding friends.

“I’ve always had a really good gauge of people. I think it’s, like, a little talent that I have. I have really good friends, and it doesn’t take me long to figure someone out or just figure out that someone’s not for me,” Duff said.

Duff Has Had To Cleanse Her Friendship Cirlce In The Past

For Duff, cleansing her friendship circle is essential to her well-being. She said that she’s had to “edit” her group in the past, adding that navigating friendships after arguments can be “overwhelming.”

“I just always want my side of the street to be clean. You know what I mean? I don’t want to make anyone feel bad by my actions. I’d rather have a conversation about it,” she said.
