Joe Burrow thrilled by Bengals’ bold off-season moves, but says he didn’t drive them

Published

on

CINCINNATI — Joe Burrow threw his support behind the Cincinnati Bengals’ offseason moves but declined to take any of the credit for them.

Speaking to the Cincinnati media for the first time since the end of the 2025 season, the franchise quarterback praised the free agent signings of safety Bryan Cook, defensive end Boye Mafe and defensive tackle Jonathan Allen, along with the big swing of the offseason, trading the No. 10 pick for defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence.

There was a lot of speculation that the slew of moves was the result of pressure applied by Burrow and the front office’s attempt to keep him happy, especially after the quarterback public pressed the team after the 2024 season to sign tight end Mike Gesicki and wide receivers Ja’Marr Chase and Tee Higgins to extensions.

But Burrow said there were no threats or mandates from him after the team went 6-11 last year and missed the playoffs for the third straight season.

“I would say we had a lot of communication during free agency,” Burrow said. “We didn’t have our postseason meeting like we typically have. I would say if anything, I was less involved this year than in years past.”

Regardless of how much influence Burrow had or didn’t have on this offseason, he appears to be happy with the results.

“This is the most talented roster we’ve had since I’ve been here,” Burrow said. “The front office has taken a lot of heat from the fans, the public, the media. We can put all of that behind us.

“They went and made it happen with free agency,” he added. “ And then obviously with Dexter, making a trade like that, that doesn’t happen a ton in the NFL. So it’s exciting to see.”

Burrow said the absence of his regular postseason meeting with the front office wasn’t intentional, nor was it a reflection of any anger or frustration with how poorly constructed the 2025 roster was with one of the league’s best offenses and worst defenses.

“Just kind of how it happened,” he said.

And it wasn’t as though the front office needed to meet with Burrow to know where he stood. The fixes needed were obvious.

“I just think we know where we needed to be better, and we went out and aggressively made it happen,” Burrow said. “We filled some holes that we had from years past, got better at a lot of positions. Signed the best free agent safety (Cook). Got the best D tackle in the league, in my opinion. So we have everything we need in that locker room. We just have to go make it happen.

“There’s no secret that the last several years didn’t go the way we wanted to, and there’s a lot of blame to go around for that, myself included,” Burrow continued. “We’re in a great spot this year. We brought in great people and great players. You can feel the vibes of the locker room. The energy is elevated right now. We have some veteran guys that can come in and show the younger guys on defense what it takes, what it means to be great every day. That’s exciting to be a part of.”

All that’s left to do is transfer that potential to the field and get back to the playoffs for the first time since 2022.

Burrow is already expecting that to happen.

“The number one thing is you have to win,” Burrow said. “We’re going to go win a lot of games this year and play great and win a Super Bowl.”

Casemiro closing in on transfer as Man United star prepares for final game

Casemiro looks to have made a decision on his next move after bidding farewell to Manchester United supporters last weekend

Casemiro is reportedly eager to join David Beckham’s Inter Miami when his Manchester United contract expires, with sources suggesting a deal with the MLS club is edging closer.

The Brazilian midfielder announced in January that this would be his last campaign at Old Trafford. The 34-year-old, who arrived from Real Madrid in a deal worth £70million including add-ons four years ago, said an emotional farewell to the ground at the weekend during his final home appearance.

He has been strongly linked with a switch to the United States once United’s season wraps up this weekend. According to The Athletic, Casemiro’s first choice is Inter Miami, with the club said to be ‘closing in’ on securing his signature on a free transfer.

However, the report highlights a significant complication: LA Galaxy currently hold the discovery rights to negotiate with the experienced midfielder and have already submitted several contract proposals to him.

The regulation, which grants clubs priority in signing certain players, exists to stop MLS sides from competing against one another for the same high-profile targets.

Previous disputes have resulted in clubs paying compensation for discovery rights, though neither LA Galaxy nor Inter Miami currently possess a designated player slot to accommodate Casemiro.

Any agreement to bring the multiple Champions League winner to Miami would need to come in under $2m (£1.48m), unless one of the club’s three designated player spots becomes available. Lionel Messi currently occupies one of those positions at Beckham’s side.

Casemiro may yet take to the pitch once more before his exit when United visit Brighton, but Sunday’s clash against Nottingham Forest marked his final appearance at Old Trafford.

The midfielder posted a heartfelt message on social media after the match, thanking both the club and its supporters, which read: “There are places we pass through in life… and there are places that become part of who we are. Manchester will forever be my home.

“To the city, the club, and every supporter, my sincerest thank you. These past four years have been unforgettable, filled with moments my family and I will carry with us for the rest of our lives.

“There simply aren’t enough words to describe the happiness and warmth we’ve felt here. Thank you for every cheer, every memory, and for making us feel at home from the very first day. Forever a Red Devil.”

Renovated TPC Craig Ranch hoping to present bigger challenge for Byron Nelson

Moments after Scottie Scheffler tied the PGA Tour scoring record on TPC Craig Ranch last year, they started tearing up the course.

That’s only a slight exaggeration. Former pro golfer Lanny Wadkins was tagged to lead a two-year renovation that took a brief pause when the course hosted the CJ Cup Byron Nelson last May. Scheffler breezed through Craig Ranch and shot a 31-under-par 253 to win by eight strokes, then the real work began.

“(The course’s parent company) basically said they didn’t want 30 under winning the thing anymore,” Wadkins told Golfweek. “And I told them, ‘Don’t worry.’”

A new and hopefully more challenging TPC Craig Ranch makes its PGA Tour return this week when the CJ Cup Byron Nelson tees off Thursday in McKinney, Texas.

Since the course took over the longtime tour stop in 2021, the winning score has never been worse than 23 under par. Scheffler and his peers who’ve seen the course have felt it will be tougher than what it had been.

“I think tee to green it is definitely better than what it was before,” Scheffler said. “I think it’s a more interesting test. The greens have added a significant amount of slope to them, and some are a bit aggressive, but overall I think (Wadkins) did a really good job of creating some nice pin locations, and you definitely have to think your way around this place a lot more than you did before. I think the test has definitely improved around this golf course.”

That should catch golf fans’ attention after the discourse throughout last week’s PGA Championship at Aronimink Golf Course outside Philadelphia. The consensus was that pin locations were diabolical and hard to reach on Thursday and Friday, and Englishman Aaron Rai went on to win with a score of 9 under, while nobody else went lower than 6 under.

“It’s really changed with all the new greens,” South Korea’s Si Woo Kim said. “Excited to play. I have to kind of worry about where I have to miss.”

As players recuperate from the PGA Championship, the only three players ranked top-50 in the world who are playing this week are Scheffler, Kim and Jordan Spieth. Rai was meant to play but withdrew.

The tournament has become as Korean as it is Texan since CJ Group’s title sponsorship began with the 2024 tournament. Some of South Korea’s best golfers make Dallas their American home base. Kim, Sungjae Im, two-time champion K.H. Lee and Tom Kim are among those competing this week.

“We’re very thankful for CJ’s support of this event,” Scheffler said “They stepped in when we needed them to. I really love the vibes of this tournament now. Like I said, we have great food in dining. It’s one of my favorite weeks of the year in terms of the food. We get a lot of young Korean players that come and play in this tournament, and I’m looking forward to getting out and competing with those guys again.”

No player from South Korea has won on tour since October 2023, but Si Woo Kim is ninth in the FedEx Cup race, with four top-fives, six top-10s and no missed cuts in 14 starts this year.

Then there’s Brooks Koepka, who is playing where he can in his first season back from LIV Golf, within restrictions set by the PGA Tour. Koepka, Scheffler and Si Woo Kim will form the marquee grouping for the first two rounds.

“I’m enjoying the grind. I’m enjoying battling it out here,” said Koepka, who is changing putters this week amid struggles on the greens. “Yeah, it’s just a newfound love, a newfound passion for the game, and something that I’m really, really enjoying being back on the road and grinding it out and trying to find it in the dirt. I think there’s something to be said about that. Each week is becoming more and more fun.”

The Cleveland Browns kicked off their voluntary Organized Team Activities (OTAs) on May 19. However, Myles Garrett was not expected to attend for the second straight year.

According to Mary Kay Cabot’s report on Monday via Cleveland.com, the team is not concerned over Garrett’s absence from voluntary OTAs.

Team owner Jimmy Haslam said he expects Garrett to “come in here and break the sack record” all over again.

Meanwhile, Browns offensive coordinator Todd Monken downplayed Garrett’s absence. He noted that the two have only communicated through text messages so far this offseason.

“This is voluntary. We are making a big deal out of this. We really are,” Monken said. “It is voluntary. We have other guys besides Myles that aren’t here. I wish they were here. They’ll be ready. We expect them to be ready and we’ll be fired up when they’re here.”

Last season, Garrett won the second NFL Defensive Player of the Year award. He set a single-season franchise sack record with 23.0 sacks.

Chloe Kim and Myles Garrett went public with their relationship when the snowboarder showed up at the sidelines and shared a kiss with the Browns star before the team’s game against the Las Vegas Raiders on Nov. 23.

Despite Kim suffering a dislocated shoulder and a torn labrum in January, she gave her best during the qualification rounds on Feb. 11. She pulled off an inverted backside 720 and a cab 1080 stalefish and scored a 90.25 to top the qualifiers.

During the finals on Feb. 12, Kim was narrowly edged out for the gold by her 17-year-old South Korean mentee, Gaon Choi, who put down a 90.25.

Kim had one final chance to reclaim the top spot but fell on a high-stakes cab double cork 1080 attempt and won the silver.
