Mateus Fernandes has been strongly linked with a transfer to Manchester United and look to have been handed a boost after West Ham were relegated
Manchester United may have to pay £80million to sign Mateus Fernandes, even after West Ham were relegated from the Premier League. The 21-year-old has had an impressive season personally at the London Stadium despite his side’s struggles, with United, Paris Saint-Germain, and Arsenal among the interested parties.
Michael Carrick and Co look set to significantly bolster their midfield department this summer, with Fernandes one of many linked. Elliot Anderson, who is also wanted by Manchester City, looks to be the top target with Nottingham Forest holding out for £100million.
United are unlikely to spend so much on just one player which could take them out of the race for his signature and a similar problem could be present for Fernandes. That is because, according to The Daily Mail, West Ham want £80million to sell the Portuguese talent – double what they paid Southampton for him 12 months prior.

Their negotiation power has decreased in recent days, however, following relegation to the Championship. Minus an 85-minute appearance against Wolves, Fernandes has been on the pitch for all of the Hammers’ Premier League games since mid-March.
United are expected to sign at least two midfielders ahead of the 2026/27 season, with Casemiro leaving the club at the end of his contract. Atalanta star Ederson looks set to be one of those coming in with talks between the two taking place recently.

Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton, Brighton star Carlos Baleba, Aurelien Tchouameni of Real Madrid, and Newcastle United ace Sandro Tonali are just a few other midfielders that could be targeted instead.
Fernandes’ club team-mate Jarrod Bowen has also been linked with an Old Trafford switch in the last 48 hours. The 29-year-old appeared to confirm his commitment to West Ham and has since issued a new statement.
“It’s hard to post something like this when all you’re feeling is embarrassment and pain, he wrote on Instagram.
“I could write loads trying to explain where it all went wrong this season, but honestly what you deserve from me is an apology. Winning that trophy in Prague was the best night of my career. Sunday was the worst.
“We just weren’t good enough. Simple as that. And that’s why the season ended the way it did. To the fans, you didn’t let us down once. The support home and away never changed, even when things weren’t good enough from us on the pitch. We should have given you more. You deserved more.
“One thing I know about this club is that it has the desire and fight to bounce back from this. This club belongs in the Premier League and deserves to be back there as soon as possible.”
