Celebrities often play coy when asked about money – but not Gemma Collins.

The reality TV icon has boldly claimed that she’s earning more than Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer by a fair few million.

Gemma, who shot to stardom on The Only Way Is Essex in 2011, took to social media with some glam, confident snaps, posing with her hands on her hips and pouting.

Looking stunning in a white floral mini-dress with gold heels and cute accessories, including a bedazzled headband and rose-tinted sunnies.

Famous for her say-it-how-it-is attitude, she captioned the pics with a sassy, ‘Just google my name HUN ✌🏻’

The GC, 45, added a response seemingly taken from an internet search: ‘Gemma Collins: The reality TV star can command premium fees, reportedly earning up to £75,000 for a single sponsored Instagram post.

‘Her wealth is sustained through her own fashion and fragrance businesses, paid social media endorsements, and prominent reality TV and media appearances.’

The caption then stated: ‘Yes, Gemma Collins does earn significantly more than the Prime Minister.’

‘While the Prime Minister’s total salary is capped at approximately £167,000, Collins has built an estimated net worth of £3 to £4million,’ it continued.

‘Her annual earnings frequently surpass the PM’s salary, driven by high-value brand collaborations, social media deals, and reality TV appearances.’

In the comments, fans were flooded to hype Gemma up, with @lynne_williamss writing ‘Shame there isn’t more humans like GC in this world 🥰’

‘Gemma for PM!? 😉 Count me in ❤️’, declared @littlehouseinlondon.

Indeed, the PM’s salary is generally in the high-£160,000s to mid-£170,000s a year. This has fallen in recent times, with former Labour PM Gordon Brown (2007-2010) entitled to a salary of over £197k.

And in very stark contrast, media personality Gemma has proven that, for celebs of her popularity, the only way is up.

She’s had stints on some of the country’s biggest programmes, including Celebrity Big Brother, Dancing On Ice, Celebrity MasterChef, and The Real Full Monty.

She’s also done I’m A Celebrity twice, returning last year for the South Africa all-stars edition after her brief 2014 appearance became widely memed thanks to her emotional outbursts and walk-out.

For round 2, she reportedly received a £100k fee.

Gemma’s other ventures include podcasting, documentary hosting, panel show appearances, music, her fashion boutique, and brand deals galore, from Ninja and New Look to Walkers and Boots.

And while her fanbase has remained fiercely loyal since her showbiz career began (she has 2.3m followers on Insta alone), Gemma recently felt the brunt of backlash due to a campaign gone wrong.

In what was slammed as a ‘disgraceful’ move, the Department for Education released an ad featuring the Towie diva, in which she stated that she’d been enlisted to ‘help sort things out’.

Shared online, the short clip showed Gemma turning around and revealing herself to the camera outside the Westminster building, making a peace sign before getting into a lift.

Cutting to her in the offices, the footage then showed her asking: ‘Right, what are we doing to help the children?’

Education Minister Bridget Phillipson quickly appeared, opening the door to her own office and telling Gemma to ‘come in and have a chat’.

The bizarre mash-up did not go down well with viewers, calling the DfE out for ‘missing the mark’ and imploring them to speak to ‘people who are actually in education’ so informed changes can be made.

After the ad was labelled ‘tone-deaf’, Gemma responded, writing: ‘I see all your comments I’m going to change everything and help Everyone please do not worry ❤️’

Although this only seemed to rile people up further, who told Gemma it ‘wasn’t a time for joking around’.

The Minister even pushed back, telling BBC Radio 5 Live listeners that she felt the criticism stemmed from ‘snobbery’.

‘You know, what’s she got to offer? What does she have to contribute? I do have to question why people are saying that. And I do think it is snobby.

‘And I think it’s also, she can reach some of the audiences that we want to reach to make sure that they know what the government is trying to do to work with them.’

French Open 2026 results: Novak Djokovic beaten by Joao Fonseca in third-round thriller

Published

on

Joao Fonseca holds his racquet to his face in celebration

On another sweltering afternoon in Paris, Djokovic began in cruise control, breaking his young opponent in the opening game of the match and twice more across the opening two sets as he built a 2-0 lead.

Although Djokovic was broken himself in the eighth game of the first set, he responded in style with a hold to love while in the second, he soared to his crowd-pleasing best, pointing to the sky and gesturing for Court Philippe-Chatrier to raise the noise after belying his age to chase down a drop-shot before stretching for a forehand winner.

As in his second-round meeting with Valentin Royer, Djokovic’s level dipped in the third set but on this occasion, he was unable to reassert his dominance.

He became increasingly vocal in the frustration he directed at himself and his coaching team and looked fatigued, leaning over his towel box in exhaustion on several occasions while, at the opposite end of the court, Fonseca crunched booming forehands and toyed with the 39-year-old with multiple drop-shot winners.

Djokovic came out fighting after taking a lengthy break before the decider but, although he struck the first blow – breaking Fonseca in game four, it was the teenager – playing a fifth set for just the third time in his career – who rose to the occasion as the match reached its crescendo.

After hitting just 13 winners across the opening two sets, he struck 22 to Djokovic’s 14 in the fifth, including three drop-shot winners in quick succession – which elicited pained smiles from his opponent to produce the decisive break at 5-5.

Djokovic earned a break point – his 16th – as Fonseca served for the match but the Brazilian nervelessly fired down three successive aces to secure a remarkable comeback win at the first attempt.

Will Reform UK Respond To Far-Right Pressure In Makerfield?

Will Reform UK Respond To Far-Right Pressure In Makerfield?

A Reform UK victory in a former “red wall” seat like Makerfield seemed pretty nailed on a month ago.

With a strong body of support for Brexit in the region, Nigel Farage continued to lead in the polls and Reform’s huge success in the May elections – particularly in England’s local councils, where it picked up more than 1,450 seats – the right-wing party would have been pretty confident about securing their ninth MP.

It helps that all of Makerfield’s eight wards also voted for Reform on May 7.

But, when Labour MP and former minister Josh Simons announced he was stepping aside to make a path for Greater Manchester mayor Andy Burnham to get back to Westminster, all bets were off.

The famous “King of the North” is popular across the political spectrum and better known than Reform’s Wigan councillor and “plucky plumber”, Robert Kenyon.

The first opinion poll of the by-election, from Survation survey of 369 people, put Burnham on top with 43% and Reform just behind on 40%.

Reform may have still felt confident about their chances of victory – until, perhaps, they glanced at who was in third place.

Restore Britain, a far-right splinter group founded earlier this year by Great Yarmouth MP, multimillionaire and former football chairman, Rupert Lowe, somehow clinched 7% with its candidate Rebecca Shepherd.

Lowe was elected as a Reform MP in 2024 before a huge falling out with Farage saw him kicked out of the party.

Now, his new group is evidently splitting the right-wing vote in Makerfield, which could cost Reform the seat.

Restore has rapidly grown in popularity since it officially launched in February.

Lowe has developed a huge Facebook following of 1.2 million in recent months, more than double the number who follow prime minister Keir Starmer on the platform.

Vowing to deliver on mass deportations, “net-negative” migration and completely rejecting the alleged “Islamification of Britain”, Lowe is making waves on the right-wing online circuit even appearing on a filmed podcast with famous American conservative, Tucker Carlson.

By avoiding much of the mainstream media, Lowe also seems to be speaking to the same base that Reform previously focused on: the anti-establishment crowd.

Far-right activist Tommy Robinson (real name Stephen Yaxley-Lennon), was prohibited from joining Reform due to his extreme views but is now an open Restore supporter.

By contrast, Farage’s party has come under fire for accepting more than 26 ex-Conservative MPs to their ranks.

Research director at anti-fascist organisation Hope Not Hate, Joe Mulhall, told HuffPost UK that this by-election demonstrates how Restore has evolved.

The far-right party has transformed from being an “online annoyance” – which allowed Farage to paint himself as “more mainstream political force” in comparison – to a “more of an electoral threat” to Reform.

“The wake-up call was in the May elections in Great Yarmouth, where Restore picked up all nine seats it ran in,” the expert said, adding that Restore claiming to have more than 130,000 members now.

That’s less than half the 278,000 members Reform claims to have, but Restore’s numbers are still significant as it proves it has more support than the British National Party or the National Front ever secured.

As UK director of More in Common, Luke Tryl, told HuffPost UK: “Makerfield could be the first real test of the threat level that Restore Britain presents to Reform UK.

“In this new political landscape of electoral fragmentation, even a small share of the vote could be decisive.”

– Luke Tryl, More in Common

“Our polling and focus group research indicates that voters’ awareness of Restore is largely limited to those who are highly engaged online, on social media platforms such as Facebook.

“Awareness among this group, however, is significant and if it continues to grow and translates into a meaningful number of votes, that could prove a problem for Reform.

“In this new political landscape of electoral fragmentation, even a small share of the vote could be decisive. If Restore can turn online noise into action at the ballot box, Reform could discover there’s a real threat emerging to their right.”

Reform seem rather self-conscious about this threat, too, judging by their bizarre interactions with the media and online this week.

The party seemed more rattled over Restore’s success than concerned by their candidate Robert Kenyon’s controversial internet history.

Farage ended up attacking X owner and world’s richest man Elon Musk after he promoted Restore on social media, writing: “Only Restore Britain can save Britain.”

The Reform leader claimed the tech tycoon was trying to “split the right of British politics as best he can”, adding: “Quite what he’s trying to achieve, I have no idea.”

Then Reform MP Sarah Pochin accidentally called her own party by their rivals’ name during a live interview with TALK, before adding in pure panic: “Oh god! I’ll be sacked for saying that!”

Tensions ratcheted up even further when the party’s Treasury spokesperson Robert Jenrick was asked to differentiate Reform’s policies from Restore’s.

He told Sky News Reform will not deport foreign nationals who live in social housing, unlike Lowe’s party.

But he was swiftly undermined by Reform’s home affairs spokesperson, Zia Yusuf, who wrote on X: “Robert’s answer is not Reform policy.”

He insisted: “If a foreign national lives in social housing at taxpayer expense, they automatically fail our economic test and will be deported.”

Reform insiders have suggested that they are rather uneasy about their chances in Makerfield now.

HuffPost UK understands that Reform believes Restore’s vote is negligible, but a party insider warned the race “is going to be really tight so every vote counts”.

They predict the difference between first and second place could be one or two percentage points, but have completely ruled out the idea of a deal with their rivals.

They’re also hoping Labour will lose some support to the Green Party, which could split the left-wing vote and bolster their efforts.

Meanwhile, Restore is basking in its first major moment in the spotlight and enjoying its role as potential kingmaker.

Lowe’s team did not reply when approached for comment by HuffPost UK, but the party leader was very dismissive towards his rivals in an interview with the Spectator.

He said: “I would have helped Nigel become prime minister but I don’t think he is fit to become prime minister. My personal opinion is that he is managed opposition.

“I think that if you look at the mainstream media, it is now pushing Nigel… so I’m not really interested in Reform.”

Even as Lowe plays it cool, his success could end up pulling Reform further right, Mulhall said.

He told HuffPost UK that Restore itself is “quite an unstable coalition” and a “ragbag collection of very extreme individuals” who are pretty far removed from most of the British public.

He pointed out that it currently attracts both those slightly to the right of Reform all the way to “racial nationalists”.

“Where it ends up, and how long it lasts, and how long those individuals kind of put their differences aside in the interest of Restore – rather than breaking out into civil wars – is an unknown question,” he said.

But, even if the party itself does not have a long shelf-life, it has already managed to seep into Reform’s policy-making.

“Reform’s policy on mass deportation isn’t actually that far away now from where Lowe’s position was when he was booted out,” Mulhall said. “Especially on the issue of immigration, deportation and demographics, I think you’re starting to see Reform feeling they have to shift right, trying to hold onto that rightward flank.”

He insisted that it was “wishful thinking” that the two parties might end up taking one another down.

However he added: “Restore has the ability to take a chunk out of Farage’s vote share but it has a very clear ceiling in a way Reform does not.”

There’s no doubt that Reform has been rattled by the rise of its rival, but it will be hard to fully assess Restore Britain’s impact until Makerfield voters flock to the ballot box on June 18.

Will Farage be able to hold his nerve until then, or will he find himself adopting further right-wing strategies in a bid to stop the Restore bleed?

Real reason why Katie Price’s entire Instagram suddenly disappeared revealed

Published

on

Daily Mirror

Katie Price’s Instagram was taken down amid Lee Andrews’ ‘disappearance’ and later discovery – as it has now been revealed why that happened

Katie Price’s real reason for being booted off Instagram has been revealed.

The former glamour model has reportedly had her account temporarily disabled on Instagram because of her posting content. Katie had been searching for ‘missing’ Lee for weeks.

However, as he was found in a Dubai prison, Katie’s social media went offline, and fans were left puzzled if it was linked. It has now been reported that Katie was taken off Instagram for a very different reason.

“It is all slightly ludicrous: you don’t follow Katie Price for home decor inspo or cake baking. She is a fun, irreverent glamour model with millions of fans all over the world,” the source told The Sun.

“The spotlight is on her like never before at the moment, so miserable keyboard warriors with nothing better to do write in to complain about her content. She posts a lot about her CBD oil and gummies but these are perfectly legal, and she obviously has a deal in place and certain commitments.”

The source added: “And I don’t think anyone can really complain about a hint of boob when things like OnlyFans are in existence. Anyway it’s all been sorted now, and she should be back up and running within the next 24 hours. It was a lot of fuss about nothing and just quite annoying, really.”

Katie issued a worried statement two weeks back when Lee went ‘missing’.

“Hey everyone, I don’t really know where to begin, but I know there’s all this speculation about Lee from when I met him but something really, really serious has happened,” she said.

“I’ve been forced that I have to say this now because my sister’s been getting emails now from the media. It was put up on my Instagram that Lee is taking time out from social media because of all the trolling, the media frenzy, the speculation. I put that up because the truth is that Lee has been missing for three days. The last time I heard from Lee was Wednesday night at 10pm. He was trying to go through the border in Dubai to get on a flight to me.”

Lee was later allegedly found in a Dubai prison, two weeks after he went ‘missing’.

Cannibal killer has parole hearing after boasting he ‘ate victim with pasta’

Published

on

Daily Record

David Harker, 51, has been eligible for parole since 2013

A killer who boasted that he had eaten parts of his victim with a plate of pasta has had his application for parole refused for a ninth time. David Harker, now 51, killed mother-of-four Julie Paterson, 32, in Darlington in 1998, and only some of her remains have ever been found.

Harker is currently serving a life sentence after admitting manslaughter on the grounds of diminished responsibility. It previously emerged that he had told friends and psychiatrists that he had fried part of his victim’s thigh and eaten it with pasta and cheese.

He has been eligible for parole since 2013, and a ninth hearing was held this month to determine whether he should be freed or moved to an open prison.

The Parole Board said it was still not considered safe to allow him to be released or to be transferred, based on the continuing need to protect the public.

Harker was 24 when he was sentenced in 1999.

Psychiatrists agreed he had a severe psychopathic disorder when he killed Ms Paterson, meaning he was not guilty of murder.

The Parole Board said the law required Harker’s case to be assessed regularly.

A report into his recent behaviour found that his behaviour in custody had “significantly improved”, with no disciplinary findings since 2015.

Previous decisions have been made using documents but the latest, ninth, heard oral evidence.

Harker did not attend or make representations.

The panel considered a dossier containing 356 pages of reports, including submissions on behalf of the Secretary of State arguing against release.

It heard from the person responsible for managing Harker in jail, two probation officers who would be responsible for managing him in the community, a psychologist and someone who worked with him on a programme in prison.

While the person who worked with him on the programme was not allowed to recommend a course of action, the others said Harker did not pass the test for release.

In its conclusion, a Parole Board summary of the decision said: “The panel carefully analysed all the evidence and formed its own independent assessment of risk.

“It decided not to direct the release of David Harker, nor to recommend to the Secretary of State that David Harker should be transferred to open conditions.”

Raheem Sterling arrested on suspicion of drug-driving after Lamborghini crash

Published

Daily Record

The ex-Liverpool, Manchester City and Arsenal forward – who is also a 82-time England international – was stopped by police after crashing his car into the motorway barriers on the M3.

Raheem Sterling has been arrested for driving whilst unfit through drugs after crashing his Lamborghini. The ex-Liverpool, Manchester City and Arsenal forward, who is also a 82-time England international, was stopped by police after crashing his car into the motorway barriers on the M3.

A statement from Hampshire Police said on Thursday: “Just before 9am on Thursday, we received reports that a Lamborghini was in collision with barriers on the M3 southbound, close to the Minley Interchange. No other vehicles were involved and no injuries were reported.

“The driver, a 31-year-old man, from Berkshire, has been arrested on suspicion of driving a vehicle whilst unfit through drugs, driving dangerously, possession of a Class C drug and failing to provide a specimen. He has been bailed while our enquiries continue.”

As reported by the Mirror, the footballer was eventually released on bail pending further investigation. Sterling has endured a very difficult few years when it comes to his footballing career. The winger enjoyed a successful period with Liverpool ahead of a move to Manchester City.

He won four Premier League titles during his time at the Etihad Stadium but was sold to Chelsea in 2022. Sterling spent just two seasons at Stamford Bridge before being loaned out to Arsenal where he scored just one goal in 28 appearances.

His remaining contract with Chelsea was ripped up in January, with the wide-man then moving to Dutch side Feyenoord.

He made just eight appearances, though, and did not score a goal. Speaking about Sterling after his final appearance for the club, Feyenoord boss Robin van Persie said: “Personally, I struggle with the cynicism surrounding him. I think respect is more appropriate. In any case, I don’t like cynicism. I can’t stand the whole atmosphere around him.

“Everyone has to know their place in that. And I think we sometimes go a bit overboard in the Netherlands regarding that.”

“He has scored 200 goals in England and played 82 international matches,” Van Persie added. “And that is regardless of whether you think he plays well or not. But I think the way we handle this as a footballing nation is really very bad.”

‘Brilliant’ village with travel links to ‘die for’ but a busy road branded ‘too fast’

Published

on

Cambridgeshire Live

One person said a major A-road near the village is “too fast” and makes a lot of noise

Residents in a Cambridgeshire village say that it is brilliant with bus links “to die for” but there is a busy road that some say is “too fast”. The countryside village of Linton is home to over 7,000 people, according to the 2021 census.

It is a village complete with pretty houses and an array of different amenities, but some of its residents have mixed views on a busy road nearby.

Keith Comber, who recently moved from Cornwall to Linton, thinks that “it is a sweet village” with “lovely old houses” but thinks the A1307 nearby is “the only negative”, especially due to the “traffic noise”.

He said: “The traffic is too fast and there’s a lot of heavy, really big lorries.” Keith’s wife Jane added: “You have to really really check [when driving on the A1307]. I wouldn’t take my grandchildren near the road. I would love to take them that way because it’s beautiful by the church but I don’t want to take little ones down here.”

The village has a pharmacy, dentist, three pubs, multiple cafes and a Co-op. A lady called Rio said it has got “everything” and that her favourite feature is having a bus service that is “to die for”. She said: “The bus service from here to Cambridge is to die for. You can go to Addenbrooke’s and then into the city. It is absolutely great. What more could you want?”

John, who is looking to move to the village, thinks that the A1307 is an “asset” because it means locals can easily access Cambridge. He thinks the A1307 would worry him if he lived on it but Rio, who was with John, feels as though “at least it [traffic] doesn’t come through the village anymore”.

Julie Manning, 43, has run The Dog and Duck pub for 13 years. She said that running the business is “good fun” but it is a “tricky environment”. Overall, she is grateful that the village supports the local businesses and said the village offers a community where they “all look out for each other”.

She said that with potential plans proposed for new houses in the village, the A1307 will be “busier” but “the road is the road” and “sometimes it is the people who drive on it more than the road itself”.

A woman, who only gave her name as Jilly, said: “We wanted to move here because of all the facilities. We lived in a village that had nothing. No shop or anything, so it is great.”

Jilly, who has lived in Portugal, London and a nearby village previously, added: “People are very friendly and it has great access to Cambridge so it is brilliant. There is more going on. There’s a lovely poetry society.”

11 Travel Tips Most People Don’t Know About

11 Travel Tips Most People Don't Know About

It’s not just the current EES checks and upcoming ETIAS applications, or this year’s jet fuel costs and cancellations. Travelling has always been a pain; there are more rules for little things like power banks and wheeled suitcases than you might imagine.

So any advice that makes the experience easier is welcome.

Enter: the members of Reddit’s r/TravelHacks, who responded to a post by poster TapComprehensive2241 with tonnes of helpful advice.

“What’s the one travel hack you swear most people don’t know about?”, the entry reads.

Here are 11 of the most popular responses:

1) Use up the last of your local currency during check-out

“When checking out of your hotel, before they charge your credit card for the full price, use some or all of your local currency… towards paying the bill. Saves you bringing home foreign currency and avoids currency conversion charges.”

2) Put your hotel’s details in your wallet

“Grab a hotel business card to show locals/taxi if you need directions or a ride.”

“Always do this… especially where English isn’t the primary language,” u/TapComprehensive2241 agreed.

3) Pack some zip-seal plastic bags in your suitcase

“Stash a few different-sized ziplocks in your suitcase. Dirty hotel remotes? Stick it in a ziplock. Soiled clothes and no way to wash? Keeps them separated and smells contained.

“Shells from the beach. [Rubbish] bag. Snack holder. [Bag] organiser. [Sick] bag. Ice pack. Coin holder. Leak prevention for liquids. Keep a change of clothes rolled up tight in your backpack. Keeps sand off an e-reader at the beach. Endless possibilities.”

4) Get more power from your adapter

“Pack a power strip with an appropriate adapter for wherever you’re going. Not every place has enough outlets to charge your devices. This is particularly handy if travelling with a group.”

5) Prepare for offline navigation

“Pre-download offline Google maps for the area you’re going to be in so you can still navigate, even if you don’t have [data or signal]”.

6) Avoid that annoying morning light

“When your hotel curtain won’t close all the way to keep the light out, you can use the clothes hanger with the clips on it to hold them shut. Works like a charm every time!”

7) Prepare your home for your exhausted, post-flight self

“Make sure your home is clean – trash out, fresh sheets and towels, laundry done – before you travel, so you come home with nothing to do but unload.”

8) Forget traditional folding

“Rolling your clothes instead of folding them gets you so much more room in your bag.”

9) Turn your neck pillow into secret storage

“Get a neck pillow with removable stuffing. If you need the extra space or weight, fill it with your clothes. You can hold a lot in a good-sized neck pillow.”

10) Download the local language on translation apps

“This tip saved us in Slovakia this past fall. We… had no data on our phones. Our train… was rerouted while we were on board [and we were dropped off at a] tiny town where… no one spoke [English]. We had to figure out how to get back on track, and thank goodness I had downloaded the languages.”

11) Go to a hotel if you’re lost

“Hotel employees are so knowledgeable, and often have access to maps and [the internet] and can help you with directions, where to eat, etc.”

Tennis star Rafael Jodar speaks out after claims he pushed ball girl at French Open

Tennis star Rafael Jodar speaks out after claims he pushed ball girl at French Open
Jodar insisted he did not push her, suggesting she may have tripped on the court cover.

Spanish tennis player Rafael Jodar has denied pushing a ball girl out of his way during his match at the French Open.

Jodar booked his place in the fourth round of Roland Garros with victory over American Alex Michelsen on Friday.

Between sets, footage shared on social media showed the 19-year-old walking off the court when a ball girl appeared to accidentally step across his path while trying to move out of the way.

Jodar was seen gesturing to someone in his box, later clarifying that to be his father, as he passed the girl.

Jodar denied pushing the volunteer, suggesting she may have got her feel tangled in the court cover.

Initial footage that appeared on social media caused fury among tennis fans. However, a separate clip suggested the ball girl may have indeed tripped back on the court cover just as Jodar was raising his hand towards his father.

‘I didn’t touch her,’ he said. ‘No, no, no. I could never do that.’

He continued: ‘I didn’t push her or anything. I was telling my dad to give me the things that he was going to give me after a toilet break when I was coming back.

‘She was in the middle, so I think she was trying to get out of the way. She was going backwards, but I think she, like, fell, but not because I push(ed) her.

He added: ‘It [the court cover] was right behind her. So when she was walking backwards, she fell with that.

‘I appreciate all the work that the ball kids are doing. I know it’s difficult with the heat and the conditions to stay there, so I appreciate. I could never, you know, push a ball kid.’

The North Yorkshire village with strong links to TV and film

Grosmont in the North York Moors National Park has been branded “a picturesque North Yorkshire village” known for its dramatic scenery.

The village, close to Whitby, has long been a favourite with walkers, railway enthusiasts and visitors exploring the North York Moors, but more people are now discovering it as a memorable stop-off thanks to its historic station, traditional village feel and scenic walking routes – or that’s what people are saying online.

Much of Grosmont’s appeal centres around its railway heritage.

The village is the northern terminus of the North Yorkshire Moors Railway, where visitors can watch heritage steam trains arriving and departing from the historic station.

And it’s this railway heritage that has featured on TV and films over the years, including Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone for some of the train scenes, as well as featuring in 2023’s Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny.

On TripAdvisor, one visitor described it as “a wonderful place to watch the steam trains and soak up the atmosphere.”

Another said: “It’s a lovely village with great walks, friendly people and a proper old-fashioned railway feel.”

Grosmont is not only a destination for train lovers.

Walkers frequently pass through the village on routes across the North York Moors, including riverside paths and trails linking Grosmont with neighbouring villages such as Goathland and Egton Bridge.

The popular Rail Trail between Grosmont and Goathland gives visitors the chance to combine railway history with countryside views, while the surrounding Esk Valley offers peaceful scenery throughout the year.

The village also has a rich industrial past.

Grosmont grew significantly in the 19th century after the arrival of the Whitby to Pickering Railway and the development of ironstone mining and ironworks.

At its peak, the ironworks employed hundreds of people, leaving behind a legacy of solid stone terraces, railway buildings and industrial heritage that still shapes the character of the village today.

Visitors often stop at the Station Tavern, the village shop or the local co-op after a walk or railway trip, while families gather around the station to watch the engines.

The village remains a working community as well as a tourist destination, with residents, walkers and day-trippers sharing its narrow lanes and scenic surroundings.

While access can be a little challenging due to steep roads and rural routes, many visitors say that it only adds to the sense of discovery.

One tourist said online: “It’s the kind of place you don’t just pass through, you stop, look around and stay longer than planned.”

Sherlock villain gets spin-off series set at Durham University

The upcoming TV drama Moriarty will reimagine the iconic character as a criminal mastermind in the north of England.

In the series, Professor James Moriarty is cast as a professor of criminal psychology at Durham University.

He leads a double life as the architect of sophisticated crime across the north of England.

Kris Thykier, the Bafta-nominated producer behind the project, said: “We are thrilled to be working with Fremantle to bring to life the original and character-driven spin-off from the Sherlock Holmes universe that Chris Cornwell has created.”

When a new criminal threat emerges, Moriarty is forced to collaborate with the police as a consultant.

He uses this role to discreetly take down his enemy, all while keeping his identity hidden from law enforcement.

He is paired with detective Imogen Burrows, a no-nonsense officer from Yorkshire. Together, they become a formidable team, but the real danger to Moriarty turns out not to be his criminal rival, but Burrows’ growing suspicions.

Mr Thykier said the series will offer a “playful, dark, and thrilling dive into the psychology of villainy.”

Rebecca Dundon, Fremantle’s senior vice president of scripted content, said the concept had immediate appeal.

Ms Dundon said: “We instantly saw huge potential for a commercial, returning franchise that brings to life one of the more allusive characters in the Sherlock world.

“It’s exciting to collaborate with Kris and the team at Archery to bring a premium, propulsive, contemporary drama to screen that will not only be clever and hooky, but also give us a fresh spin on the procedural crime format with an unconventionally brilliant protagonist at the heart who will constantly surprise and frustrate viewers in a highly entertaining manner.”

Moriarty has yet to be cast, but the character has previously been portrayed on screen by actors including Jared Harris, Andrew Scott, and Donal Finn.
