NEW DELHI: After a disappointing Thursday where Dommaraju Gukesh tasted the bitterness of a defeat to World No. 1 and five-time world champion Magnus Carlsen in what was the reigning world champion’s final game as a teenager, Gukesh returned to the board on Saturday for his Round 9 clash against compatriot Grandmaster R Praggnanandhaa.On Friday, as Norway Chess observed its first rest day, Gukesh celebrated his 20th birthday. Call it a coincidence or a stroke of good fortune at the start of his 20s, but the reigning world champion managed to bounce back from a poor start to the game and defeat his compatriot R Praggnanandhaa under the panoramic roof of the Deichman Bjørvika library in Oslo on Saturday. Heading into Saturday’s clash, Gukesh found himself at the bottom of the pack with 3.5 points. However, with this crucial victory over Pragg, the 20-year-old, who will defend his World Championship crown later this year against Uzbekistan’s Javikhir Sindarov, has climbed to third place on the leaderboard, trailing tournament leader Alireza Firouzja by only 3.5 points.On the board, the all-Indian clash perfectly illustrated the enduring charm of classical chess.

Playing with the white pieces, Praggnanandhaa gained space with an advanced c5–c6 pawn chain and active queenside play. Gukesh, however, responded energetically in the centre with 32…e5 and launched a kingside assault with 34…g5 and 37…g4. The critical phase of the game began after 33.d5, as Black’s attack rapidly accelerated. Gukesh sacrificed material for the initiative to crack open White’s king shelter, launching a decisive offensive after 46.Kxf3 Bh5+ 47.Kf2 Qg3+.Under severe time pressure, Black’s active pieces and direct threats proved overwhelming. Praggnanandhaa never appeared to be in a position to mount a recovery after losing his way in the intense time scramble.“What can I say, just a very complex game… luckily, the tricks kind of worked out for me,” Gukesh said after the victory. This marked Gukesh’s first classical win of the tournament, as well as his very first triumph as a 20-year-old.Divya Deshmukh bounces back in styleMuch like Gukesh, India’s Divya Deshmukh also endured a tough outing just before the rest day. The 20-year-old Grandmaster, who has otherwise shown commendable form throughout the tournament, let an advantageous position slip through her fingers during a classical draw before losing the Armageddon tie-break to the defending Norway Chess Women champion, Anna Muzychuk.Consequently, redemption was the top priority for Divya on Saturday. She delivered exactly that, securing her first classical win of the tournament by defeating Zhu Jiner in an exhausting 84-move encounter.

Playing with the black pieces, Divya defended resiliently through the opening. The game remained roughly equal through the early middlegame, but Divya gradually improved her piece placement and neutralised White’s initiative. The definitive turning point came after 41.Nxa4, when Black activated her rook beautifully with 42…Re2+ and 43…Rxh2. From that moment on, Black’s rook and knight completely outshone White’s bishop, creating a highly favourable endgame that Divya flawlessly converted into a win.With this victory, Divya has broken away to become the sole leader of the tournament with 8.5 points.She next faces Women’s World Champion Ju Wenjun on Sunday in a highly anticipated rematch of their first-round encounter, where Divya previously defeated the Chinese Grandmaster in Armageddon.Elsewhere: Magnus Carlsen handed third classical defeat; Koneru Humpy secures first winIt was another lacklustre day at the office for World No. 1 and local hero Magnus Carlsen, who succumbed to his third classical loss of the tournament at the hands of Wesley So in their Round 5 matchup. Following the defeat, Carlsen now sits at the bottom of the table with 4.5 points.

Meanwhile, Alireza Firouzja defeated Germany’s No. 1 Vincent Keymer in an Armageddon tie-break to maintain his position as the sole leader of the open section.Koneru Humpy secured a breath of fresh air by picking up her first win of the tournament, defeating Women’s World Chess Champion Ju Wenjun in Armageddon.Anna Muzychuk outclassed Bibisara Assaubayeva in their Armageddon tie-break to maintain third place on the points table with 7 points.

Shedeur Sanders may not have gotten the first-round draft pick money he was searching for in April 2025, but the Cleveland Browns quarterback still cashed in on a different source.

Thanks to the NFL Players’ Association’s endorsement agreements, Sanders made $17.7 million in group licensing income for the 2025 season, per Front Office Sports.

That money comes from all jersey sales, trading cards and other collectibles purchases by fans, and it’s a record-breaker.

Sanders surpassed legendary NFL quarterback Tom Brady, who made $9.5 million in 2021-22, by a sizable amount.

Sanders’ Browns contract is just over $1 million per season, inking a four-year, $4.647 million rookie deal before taking the field in 2025. He infamously fell in dramatic fashion during the NFL Draft, as he not only didn’t go in the first round, but he had to wait until Day 3 when the Browns finally called.

Cleveland had also drafted Oregon’s Dillon Gabriel, a fellow Heisman Trophy finalist, ahead of Sanders in the third round.

But Sanders’ fans were abundant and they clearly showed out in terms of merchandise purchases and then some.

Also, the report made sure to point out Sanders’ other endorsement deals that he likely received as he entered professional football, bringing his rookie season total money near $20 million, if not over.

Sanders came into the NFL with tons of hype and anticipation from football fans and experts alike, seeing if he could handle the most elite level in the sport.

However, he had to wait for his time with the Browns, with veteran signal caller Joe Flacco starting for now-ex head coach Kevin Stefanski’s squad at the start of the 2025 campaign.

Stefanski announced that Sanders would be the team’s starter for the remainder of the year, as Cleveland was out of the playoff hunt and they clearly wanted to see their rookie develop. He ultimately threw for 1,400 yards with seven touchdowns and 10 interceptions, while owning a 3-4 record across seven starts.

Now, while the hype continues for Sanders, he still must fight for that starting job entering 2026. Deshaun Watson is finally back healthy and he has been splitting first-team reps for the Browns at voluntary practices under new head coach Todd Monken, who comes over from the Baltimore Ravens.

Shubman Gill may currently lead India in Tests and ODIs, but the Gujarat Titans captain has not given up on making a return to the national T20I side.Speaking ahead of the IPL 2026 final against Royal Challengers Bengaluru, Gill said he remains focused on improving his game despite finding himself out of India’s plans in the shortest format.The 26-year-old last played a T20 International during India’s home series against South Africa in December 2025. After a difficult run in the format, Gill was subsequently left out of the squad for this year’s T20 World Cup, where India successfully defended their title.However, the opener insisted that his ambition to represent India in T20Is remains intact.“I’d be happy to play if I get picked for the T20 team.”Rather than dwelling on selection matters, Gill said his focus remains on constant improvement across all formats of the game.“Honestly, I want to keep working on my game. I want to keep getting better as a T20 batsman, as an ODI batsman, as a Test batsman.”Gill endured a disappointing run in T20 Internationals last year. Across 15 matches in 2025, he managed only 291 runs at an average of 24.25, with a highest score of 47. Those struggles eventually saw him lose his place in the side amid intense competition for opening spots.Since then, India’s T20 batting depth has only grown stronger. Sanju Samson cemented his place with a stellar T20 World Cup campaign, while Abhishek Sharma has continued to strengthen his credentials. The emergence of 15-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has further intensified competition after the Rajasthan Royals sensation smashed 776 runs this IPL season at a staggering strike rate of over 237.Despite the challenge ahead, Gill remains committed to refining his game.“You know, cricket is such a game that you can never really get perfect, but obviously, you can strive for it, and that’s what I try to do.”The Gujarat skipper enters the IPL final in excellent form. He has amassed 722 runs this season at an average of 48.13 and a strike rate of 163.72, including a brilliant 104 off 53 balls in Qualifier 2 against Rajasthan Royals.Gill said staying focused on preparation rather than external discussions has helped him remain mentally fresh throughout the season.“I think preparation is what keeps me mentally fresh, knowing what I need to do the next week, next couple of weeks or in the next series or next tournament, and preparing for that.”According to Gill, clarity around controllable factors is the key to handling the pressures that come with international cricket.“It’s about knowing the things that are in my control or knowing the things that I need to do well to be able to succeed and what we need to do well as a team to be able to succeed is what I think keeps me mentally fit.”While a return to India’s T20I setup may not be immediate given the competition for places, Gill’s performances in IPL 2026 have at least reopened the conversation. With another opportunity awaiting in the final, the Gujarat Titans captain will look to strengthen his case further with the bat.

He earns more than any other player in Ligue 1, won the Ballon d’Or in September 2025, and heads into the World Cup as France’s most dangerous attacking weapon. The Season That Changed Everything

The 2024-25 season settled every argument about where Dembele stood among the game’s elite. He finished the campaign with 35 goals and 16 assists across all competitions, numbers that would be exceptional for a striker and are remarkable for a wide forward. PSG won Ligue 1, the Coupe de France and the Champions League, their first European title, and Dembele drove all three. The Champions League final against Inter Milan ended 5-0, the heaviest margin of victory in the history of the competition. He set up two of the goals that night, was named Player of the Season for the tournament, and walked away from Paris in the summer of 2025 as the best player in the world.

He was named UEFA Champions League Player of the Season, Ligue 1 Player of the Year, and collected the Ballon d’Or in September 2025 at the Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris. For a player who spent four years at Barcelona being written off as injury-prone and difficult, the symmetry of winning the world’s most prestigious individual football award in Paris was not lost on anyone watching.

The 2025-26 season has continued along similar lines. In 22 Ligue 1 appearances, he has scored 10 goals and contributed 17 goal involvements in total, placing him second in PSG’s top scorers list and among the top performers in the league.

The Salary and What It Means

According to L’Equipe’s ranking published in April 2026, Dembele is the highest-paid player in Ligue 1, earning €1.5 million gross per month. His PSG contract, signed on a free transfer from Barcelona in August 2023 and running until 2028, carries an annual gross salary of around €18 million per Capology, with performance bonuses on top of that.

Career earnings from salary alone across Rennes, Dortmund, Barcelona and PSG exceed €110 million. His endorsement portfolio, which includes Adidas and EA Sports, adds a further estimated €5 million annually. Total net worth across salary, endorsements, real estate in Paris and Barcelona, and other investments sits at approximately $40 million as of early 2026.
