Southampton 'Working On Deal' to Appoint Tonda Eckert Permanently

Southampton are working on a deal to appoint a new permanent manager imminently, according to Alfie House.

The Saints were relegated to the Championship last season and brought in Will Still as their new manager to lead the charge back to the Premier League, but he struggled and was sacked after just two wins in his first 13 games.

Now the club have held talks with a candidate about taking the role permanently, and it seems as though fans at St Mary’s are set to be delighted by the news coming out of the Saints, ahead of the weekend clash against Birmingham City.

Technical director Johannes Spors handed the reigns to Tonda Eckert on an interim basis after Still was sacked, with the intention of giving him a chance to audition for the role while they also looked at alternative options.

But the former Under-21’s coach has impressed massively, winning his first four games in charge to help the team climb the table, before suffering defeat to Millwall in his last outing.

That has been enough to convince the board that he is the right man to take charge of the club going forward, and journalist Alfie House has now revealed that Southampton are ‘working on a deal’ to permanently appoint Eckert.

No deal has been agreed yet, but the expectation is that he will be appointed as the next permanent manager. There is said to be no rush on making the deal permanent, with the players and Eckert all happy about how things are currently going.

After claiming four wins in his first four games, including a stunning 5-1 win over Charlton and a 3-0 win over Leicester City, Eckert has been praised for his attention to detail as manager by senior players in the squad.

Oriel Romeu, who signed as a free agent, recently sang the praises of the 32-year-old boss, describing him as ‘amazing’.

“He has great football knowledge, and to do what he has done has not come out of the blue – I am 100 per cent convinced.
