Desperate search for US Marine missing off the coast of California

A search operation is continuing for a US Marine who disappeared during a training exercise off the coast of southern California. Military officials confirmed that multiple agencies were involved in the effort on Sunday.

The Marine was reported missing from the USS Anchorage shortly after midnight on Thursday morning, during integrated training involving the Makin Island Amphibious Ready Group and the 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit.

This incident marks at least the second time in six weeks that the US military has had to search for missing personnel. In May, the remains of two US Army soldiers, who vanished during exercises in Morocco, were recovered following a multinational search operation that utilised air, naval, and artificial intelligence assets.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and all who are affected during this difficult time,” the Navy said in the news release this week about the missing Marine.

The Navy transitioned from search-and-rescue efforts to a search-and-recovery operation Friday evening. The Marine’s name was being withheld pending the notification of family.

The search has covered about 2,400 square miles (6,200 square kilometers) and involved three surface ships and 12 aircraft from the Navy, Marine Corps, Coast Guard and Air Force, officials said.

The USS Anchorage is an amphibious transport dock ship based at Naval Base San Diego.

World Cup boss QUITS as president demands investigation after angry fans start petition

A World Cup 2026 manager has resigned from his position after his country exited the competition prematurely

Hong Myung-bo has stepped down from his role as South Korea boss following their World Cup 2026 group-stage exit. He becomes the fourth boss to leave their post after poor performances in North America.

South Korea got their World Cup 2026 campaign off to an excellent start when beating Czechia 2-1, but it was all downhill from there. Back-to-back 1-0 losses to Mexico and South Africa sealed their elimination, as they were not among the top eight third-place group finishers.

Many expected them to qualify for the knockouts and fans reacted angrily to their premature exit, starting a petition calling for Hong to be relieved of his duties.

South Korean President Lee Jae-myung expressed his bewilderment at the early exit, too, calling for a probe into the reasons why. In a press conference in Mexico on Sunday, Hong confirmed that he would be stepping down.

“Even though I am leaving the national team, I am not abandoning Korean football altogether,” Hong said. “I will cheer for the national team from the bottom of my heart and hope that the team will be trusted and loved by the people once again.”

Fans had lost faith in Hong, as evidenced by a petition calling for his resignation and the reform of South Korea’s national team. The petition read: “The Korea Football Association’s official selection process was effectively ignored, making it difficult to avoid criticism that the appointment was fundamentally illegitimate.

“Despite fielding what many considered the strongest squad in Korea’s World Cup history, the team finished with one win and two losses, placing third in the group.

“The performance against South Africa was so lifeless that it could be regarded as one of the worst displays by a Korean team in World Cup history.”

Hong’s popularity in South Korea plummeted so low that he has been reportedly banned from various shops and restaurants. President Lee’s admission on X was just as damning. He wrote: “I ‌am not just taken aback by this unexpected outcome, I am utterly baffled.

“Once again, it has been proven that personnel decisions are everything. When loyalty and factionalism are valued over competence, and an incapable person is appointed as a leader, the outcome is as predictable as fire.”

This was Hong’s second stint as national team boss as he also guided them to the World Cup 2014 before resigning. His reappointment in 2024 sparked allegations of favouritism and a lack of transparency in the hiring process from Korean media, all of which Hong denied.

Emmerdale’s Jeff Hordley has revealed he recently shared a unique experience with his real life partner and colleague Zoe Henry.

Jeff and Zoe, known for their roles as Cain Dingle and Rhona Goskirk in the ITV soap, have been married since 2003. They have two children together called Violet and Stan.

Even though Jeff and Zoe have worked together on the ITV soap for 25 years, they have never actually featured in a two-hander scene.

With Rhona married to Marlon Dingle (Mark Charnock), we often see her interacting with her husband’s family and occasionally chats to Cain, but she rarely interacts with just him.

That’s all set to change in the near future, as star Jeff Hordley has confirmed he has just finished filming a scene where Cain has an ’emotional’ moment with Rhona.

Hard to believe it’s really taken this long for it to happen!

‘We did a scene the other day…we’ve been in this show for a long time, and we’ve always been in scenes together in the Woolpack, but we did our first two-hander the other day!’, Jeff said in a chat with OK! Magazine.

Jeff didn’t reveal the details of the scene, but did share that it was ‘really emotional’.

‘She was upstaging me. She was doing a lot of really good acting!’, he added.

So intrigued.

Zoe’s Emmerdale character Rhona has had a quiet few months, as her family have been busy trying to move forward following the deaths of drug dealers Celia Daniels (Jaye Griffiths) and Ray Walters (Joe Absolom).

The mother and son duo subjected Rhona’s stepdaughter April Windsor (Amelia Flanagan) to an ordeal that saw her deal drugs, and see older men who wanted to have sex with her. Celia was killed by Ray at the start of this year, while Ray himself was murdered by Bear Wolf (Joshua Richards) not long after.

Jeff’s alter-ego Cain has endured a dramatic and difficult first half of 2026. Amid the nightmare of Moira Dingle (Natalie J Robb) being wrongly accused of double murder and people trafficking, Cain was also diagnosed with prostate cancer.

He had an operation a couple of months ago, but has been told that the cancer has spread, and will need to undergo a course of radiotherapy.

Supreme Court set to rule on birthright citizenship and presidential power

Supreme Court set to rule on birthright citizenship and presidential power

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Supreme Court is wrapping up a term that has focused on President Donald Trump’s expansive claims of presidential power.

Trump’s efforts to restrict birthright citizenship, fire the heads of most independent agencies at will and remove a sitting Federal Reserve governor are among the remaining eight cases the justices are expected to decide this week, beginning Monday.

The court also is weighing, in cases from West Virginia and Idaho, whether to uphold laws in roughly half the states that prohibit transgender girls and women from playing on their public school and college sports.

Two election-related cases remain, over state laws that allow a grace period for the receipt of mailed ballots, provided they are sent by Election Day, and limits on political party spending in support of candidates for Congress and president.

Also outstanding is a dispute over geofence warrants that collect the location history of cellphone users to find people near crime scenes. Critics say the practice is a fishing expedition that violates civil liberties.

The court’s conservative majority has so far been mostly receptive to Trump’s immigration crackdown, including a decision last week allowing the administration to end temporary legal protections for people who came to the U.S. because of war or natural disaster in their homeland. Another decision could make it harder for people fleeing persecution to seek asylum in the United States.

During arguments in April, the justices signaled a more skeptical look at Trump’s executive order that would overturn long-settled understanding and deny citizenship to children born to parents who are in the country illegally or temporarily.

The court also has rejected Trump’s assertion of the power to unilaterally impose wide-ranging tariffs under an emergency powers law.

The decision in February drew Trump’s ire, including an unusually harsh and personal denunciation of two of his court appointees, Justices Neil Gorsuch and Amy Coney Barrett, who voted against him.

The extent of Trump’s power to fire independent agency members is the oldest undecided case, argued in December. The justices seem likely to overturn, or drastically narrow, a 91-year-old decision. It required a cause, like neglect of duty, before a president could remove the Senate-confirmed officials from their jobs.

The outcome appears to be in little doubt because the conservatives have allowed the firings to take effect while the case plays out, even after lower-court judges found the firings illegal.

The court seemed less willing to endorse Trump’s bid to immediately fire Federal Reserve governor Lisa Cook over allegations of mortgage fraud, which she denies. No president has ever fired a Fed governor in the agency’s 112-year history.

By custom, the court finishes its work before July 4. After this week, its next public meeting is the first Monday in October.

Helicopter crash in Saudi Arabia kills all 14 on board as emergency crews swarm scene

Published

Belfast Live

A total of 14 people have died after a helicopter crashed, killing everyone on board – it belonged to Aramco, the world’s largest oil company, officials have said

Fourteen people have tragically died following a helicopter crash in Saudi Arabia, with The Saudi Ministry of Energy confirming there were no survivors.

The incident occurred at approximately 6am local time in Ras Tanura on Sunday, with all victims being Saudi nationals. The helicopter belonged to Aramco, the world’s largest oil company, which is majority-owned by the Saudi Arabian government.

An investigation has been launched into what caused the crash. Aramco has recently been dealing with disruption as the Iran conflict affected oil supplies and pushed up prices.

The firm has stated it successfully redirected some oil exports through a pipeline to bypass the Strait of Hormuz, which has faced disruption as Iran exerted control over the waterway.

The tragedy follows another aviation disaster where a light aircraft carrying tourists for a skydiving trip crashed, claiming at least 11 lives. The plane came down in Tomblaine, near Nancy in France, at around 11am local time today, reports the Daily Star.

Approximately 11 people are thought to have perished, including five instructors, five students, and the experienced pilot. Three individuals were reportedly thrown from the aircraft.

French media are identifying the crashed plane as a Pilatus registered in Germany. This aircraft type is frequently used for parachute jumps.

Venezuela earthquake: Mum of newborn rescued from under rubble says baby motivated her

Published

Dayana Patino grins as she holds her son Juan David close to her chest from a hospital bed. Her husband, Gerson, stands beside them wearing a light blue t-shirt.

“I said to myself I’m not going to waste my energy – I’m going to scream when it’s needed, when I hear voices or steps nearby,” she said.

“I don’t know how I kept so calm because my left leg was trapped under concrete. I couldn’t move. My temple was pressed against a rock.”

Dayana said she found hope when she felt a bible beneath her.

“There began my journey of survival,” she said.

In the darkness of the rubble, she could see a “pinprick of light that looked like the moon”.

She said her rescue came after she heard her brother calling her name.

“I said to myself, this is my only chance. From the top of my lungs I cried out… I screamed ‘Here I am’ with all my might, and he said ‘I found you, and I promise you that I won’t leave until I get you out’.”

He kept that promise, and a delicate rescue operation followed to bring both mother and baby out of the rubble on Thursday night.

Dayana suffered injuries to both of her legs when the earthquake hit while Juan fortunately only sustained minor injuries.

Dunelm’s new cooling blanket is a ‘gamechanger’ for ‘hot and humid nights’

Published

Belfast Live

It’s priced from £32 – and one shopper said: “This is just what is needed in the warmer weather. I am sleeping under this with no other bedding on top and it is perfect…”

Those who struggle in hot weather may find it challenging to regulate their body temperature or get a decent sleep at night.

Electric fans seem like the go-to solution, but leaving them running continuously can push up electricity costs, while the humming sound during the night can be disruptive. An alternative worth considering is purchasing a cooling blanket.

Dunelm has recently launched a Soft and Cooling Blanket within its latest summer collection, and it’s predicted to fly off the shelves given the glowing reviews and high ratings it’s already attracting. The throw features a blend of nylon and polyethylene designed for efficient temperature control.

According to Dunelm, the Soft and Cooling Blanket encourages a cooler night’s sleep. Available in two sizes, it’s priced from £32 to £48.

Its timeless quilted pattern should suit most bedrooms and interior styles, reports the Liverpool Echo.

The retailer says its ‘unique airflow regulation’ ensures a cool night’s sleep. The Soft and Cooling Blanket can be machine washed but mustn’t be tumble dried, and it’s not safe to iron.

Amazon stocks several cooling blankets as well, including one from Luxear. This summer throw features Arc-Chill 3.0 technology that claims to ‘release quantity of heat rapidly’. It comes in various sizes and colours, with prices beginning at £32.99.

At Argos, the Silentnight Restore Cooling Blanket retails for £45. Crafted with cool-sensation fabric, it maintains a comfortable temperature for users throughout the night.

Though recently launched, Dunelm’s Soft and Cooling Blanket has already accumulated over 50 reviews, achieving an impressive customer rating of 4.6 out of five. One satisfied customer wrote: “Absolutely fabulous for the hot and humid nights! Complete gamechanger regarding a good night’s sleep.”

A different purchaser noted: ” This is just what is needed in the warmer weather. I am sleeping under this with no other bedding on top and it is perfect. Just the right weight for the warmer nights. It also fits in the washing machine and was dry in a very short time. I wish there were more colours.”

Another reviewer praised: ” This blanket is amazing . It feels very cool to the touch on one side. I have tried many types of cooling bedding and none come close to this!”

That said, one shopper awarded four stars, highlighting a minor issue: “Would have given it five stars but it tends to slip easily, which is a bit annoying. Apart from that, the colour is true to the picture, and the quality is good.”

Another customer stated: “Ideal for this time of year, so you are covered by a soft layer but not too warm.”

A further review states: ” Love, love this cooling blanket and ticks every box for anyone suffering from overheating at night. The fabric is soft and silky and it’s not too light in weight so you feel comfortably covered. Would be perfect for anyone on the warmer summer nights and available in lovely light/muted shades to match summer bedding.”

Finally, another customer added: “Was hoping this was good but was worried it wouldn’t be. One side feels ‘cool’ and the other side feels normal. We used this on a hot night recently as we live in a three-story house – it defo helped us both. I’m not saying it’s a miracle cold blanket, but it’s a 100% improvement on a thin summer duvet, and importantly, we have a super king bed, and this is super king-sized!”

Michael Jackson’s movie Michael has made history by becoming the highest grossing biopic of all time.

The Lionsgate film directed by Antoine Fuqua has moonwalked past Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer, starring Cillian Murphy.

Still in theatrical release, Michael has grossed $977.4 million (£740.9m), surpassing Oppenheimer’s $975.8 million (£739.1m).

This comes despite Oppenheimer’s incredible Oscar-winning run, which included seven awards from Best Picture to Best Director.

Over this past weekend, Michael has pulled in $9.2million (£6.9m) at the global box office.

The anticipation also remains that Michael, which stars Jackson’s nephew Jafar Jackson as the lead character, will reach a billion worldwide.

If it does so, it will become the second film to do so in 2026 after Universal’s Super Mario Galaxy movie.

Michael was also able to pull off this record while being on a 46-day theatrical window.

In comparison, Oppenheimer was on a well over six month theatrical window before it landed on streaming service Peacock.

In comparison to other musical biopics, Michael has also surpassed Bohemian Rapsody, which earned $911 million (£690m), both of which were produced by Graham King.

This comes after fans praised Michael as ‘the ultimate love letter to fans’ despite there being major controversy.

According to Variety, the Michael Jackson estate spent up to $15 million (£13.5m) to remove child abuse scenes.

After a costly rewrite the film now steers firmly away from those allegations.

Originally, the film leaned into the turbulence of when Evan Chandler accused the singer of sexually abusing his 13-year-old son, Jordan Chandler, in 1993.

Early versions of the script included scenes that featured Jackson grappling with the fallout.

Elsewhere in the film, Colman Domingo stars as the family patriarch Joe Jackson alongside Miles Teller as Jackson’s longtime attorney John Branca.

Michael is available to rent on platforms such as Prime Video, Apple TV, or Sky Store.

World Cup 2026: South Korea football coach quits as President Lee calls for probe

Published

on

South Korea coach Hong Myung-bo before the match with South Africa

Hong Myung-bo has resigned as head coach of South Korea’s men’s national football team after they failed to advance to the World Cup knockout stage.

The team had hoped they could still qualify for the next round of the tournament as one of the best third-placed teams, but that hope was quashed on Saturday.

The early exit has prompted widespread criticism at home, with President Lee Jae Myung calling for an investigation into reasons behind the team’s disappointing performance.

Hong apologised to fans on Sunday and said the responsibility “rests entirely with me as head coach”.

Ranked 32nd in FIFA’s men’s rankings and led by star player Son Heung-min, South Korea recorded two losses and one win at the World Cup, finishing behind Mexico and South Africa, who are ranked 15th and 60th respectively.

Criticism had mounted quickly after the team’s last match with South Africa on Thursday, which South Korea lost 1-0.

The defeat left them third in Group A. It still gave them hope to qualify for the next round under a new rule introduced with this tournament’s expansion from 32 to 48 teams, which allows the eight best third-placed teams in the group stage to progress to the knockout round. But on Saturday, they were knocked out because of the other teams’ final scores.

Fans blame Hong, who has been coaching the team for the past two years. On Monday, the national team’s official fan club Red Devils issued a statement calling on Hong to “kneel before the entire nation and leave the football world forever”.

Announcing his resignation at a news conference in Mexico on Sunday, Hong said that “we didn’t deliver the results that our fans expected”.

“Even though I am leaving the national team, I am not abandoning Korean football altogether,” Hong said. “I will cheer for the national team from the bottom of my heart and hope that the team will be trusted and loved by the people once again.”

The announcement came after President Lee said that he felt “not just confusion but utter bewilderment at the unexpected outcome”.

In a post on X, Lee said that the early exit of the team “appears to be a failure of organisation and personnel”.

“When favouritism and cronyism take precedence over competence in selecting a commander, the result is as predictable as fire burning paper,” he said.

Hong’s appointment to the head coach post was controversial from the start. The former defender was a hero of South Korea’s 2002 World Cup success, having captained the team to a historic semi-final finish. But when he led the team as a coach in 2014, they failed to advance beyond the group stage – or win a single match.

When Hong was appointed to the same job again in 2024, it was met with harsh uproar. Many football fans criticised the appointment as football association’s old guards giving the top job to their friend, as the KFA passed on a few foreign-born candidates who had undergone a rigorous vetting process.

On Sunday, Hong said that “accepting the job was not an easy choice”.

“I cannot say every decision has been the right one, but I can tell you that I have made every decision with Korean football in mind,” he added.

South Korea police say that they are watching for security threats at Incheon Airport and other locations after a death threat was made online against Hong on his return to Korea over the weekend, local media reported.
