​Colin Straker’s proposal to turn a five-bed property at 40, Gladstone Street in Scarborough into a seven-bed House in Multiple Occupation (HMO) for nine people has been rejected by North Yorkshire Council.

​Residents and planners raised concerns about an overproliferation of HMOs in the area.

​If it had been approved, the proposal would have resulted in four HMOs on a 200m stretch of Gladstone Street. While it would not have contravened the authority’s policy of a 10 per cent restriction on HMO properties within a 100m radius, officers said the scheme was “considered to be unacceptable in principle”.

​The Highway Authority recommended refusal of the plan, and the council’s housing regulation team objected to the proposal.

​Four objections were also lodged by members of the public. One resident said the HMO would lead to “harmful amenity impacts including increased activity, deliveries, noise and disturbance at unsociable hours”.

​Another said: “The development would impact on the character of the area, leading to a high concentration of HMOs which can lead to a transient population and impact the established residential nature of the neighbourhood.

​“There are already a number of HMOs on the street, which has changed the character of the area from a family area.”

​According to a planning report, the floor plans were not acceptable as a proposed nine-person HMO.

​The authority’s housing team said: “The plans show predominantly self-contained studios which do not meet the current space standards for the number of occupiers. Current guidance indicates that studios should have a minimum of 37sqm, which is not achievable based on the plans provided.”

​The Highway Authority also objected as there is “no existing vehicular access to the site, with no proposal to alter this arrangement”.

​It noted that according to the plans, there would be 24-hour on-site staff, which would lead to “an increase in vehicular parking demand within the local vicinity”.

​The proposal was rejected on Friday, July 3, over concerns about impacts on amenity, highway safety, and an overconcentration of HMOs in the area.

Zendaya and Tom, who last month finally confirmed they are married, were in great spirits as they left the bash arm-in-arm.

The actress looked incredible in her Valentino olive draped gown. 

The dress, Zendaya’s second look of the night, featured a bust made of green vines whilst the star continued the on-theme styling by plaiting her hair into a Grecian rope braid as a nod to her character, Athena.

She finished the look with Christian Louboutin shoes, and Chopard jewelry, with her makeup still looking flawless despite a long evening in the London heatwave.

A beaming Zendaya gripped Tom’s arm as they made their way out of the party, with the actor looking suave in a chocolate brown suit.

Earlier in the evening Zendaya wowed in another major fashion moment when she wore a Schiaparelli dress with a breastplate bodice to walk the vast red carpet at Leicester Square. 

The couture gown from Daniel Roseberry’s fall/winter 2026 show had debuted just hours before the premiere at Paris Couture Week, with the star’s stylist Law Roach flying it into London by private jet. 

The actress’ longtime stylist told French creator Elias Medini, known as Lyas, that he had traveled to Paris to collect the Schiaparelli gown straight off the runway.

‘You chose, this look for a premiere tonight,’ Medini said in a clip he shared on Instagram on Monday, panning the camera to the dress on a model standing nearby.

‘Yes, I flew in last night to come to the show; I have a private jet waiting for me,’ Law replied laughing. 

‘And for her?’ the creator asked, pointing to the model. ‘And for her, to get that dress off of her, to get it to London to put it on a very special girl.’

Zendaya plays Athena, the Greek goddess of wisdom, warfare and handicraft in Christopher Nolan’s epic film.

Pregnant leading lady Anne Hathaway, who plays Penelope in the movie, dazzled in a strapless blue gown at the premiere which showed off her blossoming bump. 

The entire cast were present at the event including Lupita Nyong’o, Benny Safdie, John Leguizamo, Matt Damon and his wife, Robert Pattinson, Himesh Patel, director Christopher Nolan and Emma Thomas.

The Christopher-fronted film is an adaptation of Homer’s ancient Greek epic the Odyssey, which sees the titular Greek King embark on a perilous journey home after the Trojan War in a bid to reunite with his beloved wife Penelope.

Despite the film being in the trusted hands of Oscar-winning director Christopher, fans haven’t quite got to grips with the casting yet.

Already known for his impressive art and high-budget fare, Christopher’s latest film could prove to be his most ambitious yet, with the $250million budget the most expensive of his career, his first shot entirely on IMAX 70mm cameras.

Beauty fans can expect a grand opening

Beauty fans in Scotland are counting down the days until Sephora opens the doors to its first Scottish store, bringing in demand brands, exclusive products and in-store beauty experiences to Edinburgh’s St James Quarter.

The global beauty retailer will officially open on Thursday, July 9, marking its first location in the Scottish capital. The launch forms part of Sephora’s continued expansion across the UK and promises plenty of excitement for shoppers, with exclusive giveaways, new product launches and brands that have never before been available in physical shops in Scotland.

Opening day celebrations will begin bright and early, with queue entertainment and surprises getting underway from 8am. Meanwhile, the store will officially open at 10am with a grand opening ceremony, complete with ribbon cutting and a performance from Sephora’s Beauty Advisors.

Early visitors will also have the chance to walk away with more than just their shopping, as the beauty store has some surprises in store for the first customers.

Some of the first customers to make a purchase, with no minimum spend required, will receive a Sephora Beauty Bonus Card with each card guaranteeing the customer with a prize.

Shoppers will also have the opportunity to win one of the retailer’s popular goodie bags packed with beauty treats, products and exclusive surprises.

Inside the store, customers can browse and purchase from an extensive selection of Sephora UK exclusives alongside some of the biggest names in beauty.

The Edinburgh branch will stock brands including rhode, HAUS LABS, Makeup by Mario, Merit Beauty, INNBeauty Project, Tower 28 and Half Magic, giving Scottish shoppers the chance to buy several of these brands in person for the very first time.

There will also be plenty of new launches to discover. Shoppers can pick up rhode’s latest products, including Highlight Milk and Pocket Bronze, while exclusive releases include the Benefit Pocket Pal, Kosas Cloud Set Loose extended shades, a first-at-Sephora launch from Dolce & Gabbana Beauty and the arrival of fragrance brand PHLUR.

The store is offering Scots an experience that goes beyond shopping, with customers being able to book one of Sephora’s signature makeup services and redeem the cost of the appointment for products purchased on the day.

Additionally the Edinburgh store will feature the retailer’s Beauty Scan Tool, which analyses skin tone to recommend the perfect foundation shade for customers. As well as creating a personalised beauty routine which best fits their skin tone.

Edinburgh won’t be the only Scottish city welcoming the beauty giant this summer. Sephora is also set to open a second Scottish store at Silverburn Shopping Centre in Glasgow on August 13, giving even more beauty lovers the chance to experience the retailer closer to home.

Coronation Street star Jack P Shepherd has been seen praising his son as the youngster continues to follow in his acting footsteps with a new theatre role.

The actor, who is famed for playing David Platt in the ITV soap, has kids, Nyla Rae and Ruben, with ex-girlfriend Lauren Shippey, and a son, Greyson, with his former partner, Sammy Milewski.

He recently welcomed his fourth child into the world, a baby girl, who is his first child with his wife, Hanni Treweek. The couple announced in February, on Valentine’s Day, that they are expecting their first child together, seven months after tying the knot at Manchester Cathedral in July.

It was then, towards the end of last month, that Jack and Hanni confirmed the arrival of their bundle of joy. Hanni led the announcement by sharing the first photo of their daughter, having not discovered the gender of their first child together ahead of the birth.

The image gave a glimpse of their baby girl for the first time as Hanni and Jack held onto her tiny hand. Captioning the post, they wrote: “Constance Ita Shepherd[heart emoji] Our beautiful baby girl has arrived, born peacefully at home, surrounded by love,” before confirming her birth date as June 26.

But amid the birth of his daughter, Jack has been seen supporting his son, Reuben, after he previously revealed he would be taking to the stage in Manchester.

Speaking on his podcast, On the Sofa, which he co-hosts alongside Corrie pals Ben Price and Colson Smith, Jack said: “He’s got a part in um a new musical. Well, it’s a new musical coming to Manchester… It’s called Fun Home. It’s a coming-of-age sort of story about kids growing up in this funeral home.

“He’s playing one of the kids. Yeah, he’s got a part, and it’s a month run at the Royal Exchange in Manchester.” When Ben asked if his son is “looking forward to it”, Jack replied: “He’s buzzing. I’ve taken him to a few of the rehearsals last weekend, and he has to be there 10 until five. It’s a full job!”

The regional premiere of the Tony Award-winning musical sensation got underway at Manchester’s Royal Exchange Theatre on Friday (July 3). Jodie McNee stars as Alison Bechdel alongside award-winning actor Nigel Harman as Bruce Bechdel.

And Jack was keen to see his son in action. Captioning a photo of the poster outside the theatre, the soap star wrote on Instagram: “Went to see Reuben as John in The Fun Home the show runs for a month at @royalexchangemanchester if you can, go see it. Fantastic performances, in particular Alex Young is flawless and Nigel Harman is superb… brace yourself though. It’s very emotional.”

His followers were quick to respond, with many off to see the show for themselves. @laurenbraysford said: “Booked for next week, can’t wait!” @sadiepickering echoed: “Booked for next week!” @jenoirrenoir added: “Ahhh! He’s such a treasure! He is fab in the show!”
