The GROAT: Seven greatest moments of Lowry’s remarkable Raptors career

Published

on

It’s time to say goodbye to a Toronto — nay, a Canadian — sports icon.

Fulfilling a promise he made after he left the franchise, Kyle Lowry announced his retirement as a member of the Toronto Raptors in a social media post on Tuesday. A formal press conference is to follow.

Though he arrived not expecting to stick around in the summer of 2012 — and not even wearing No. 7 yet because Andrea Bargnani was still on the team (he wore No. 3 at first) — Lowry ended up playing nine seasons with Toronto, along the way helping to redefine the very meaning of what Raptors basketball was on his way to what many consider to be the single greatest career by anyone to ever wear a Raptors uniform.

Among the many “GROAT” credentials Lowry has on his resume are a franchise-record-tying six all-star appearances (from 2015-2020), the franchise leader in three-pointers made (1,518), assists (4,277) and steals (873), a memorable performance of The Nutcracker with the National Ballet of Canada and a competitive fire and grit that made Raptors fans from coast-to-coast-to-coast fall in love with him.

Here’s a look at the seven most memorable moments of No. 7’s remarkable Raptors career.

The blocked Brooklyn game-winner that started it all

May 4, 2014, will go down in Raptors history as a major turning point in the franchise’s history. The series started with then-Raptors general manager making a pointed message to the Brooklyn Nets and ended with Kyle Lowry getting blocked by Paul Pierce as he tried a desperate floater to win the game.

Brooklyn won that series and Lowry ended up on the floor, but that helped set the tone for the run Lowry and the Raptors were about to embark upon.

The teammate who would become one of Lowry’s closest friends, DeMar DeRozan, proudly knelt down in front of a dejected Lowry as he held back tears with his knuckles in his eyes and gave him nothing but words of encouragement.

Lowry was very nearly traded to the New York Knicks earlier that season, but that trade was reportedly blocked by Knicks owner James Dolan. In the aftermath of that, Rudy Gay was traded and the Raptors brought in pieces to go on a surprising run that saw them reach the post-season for the first time since 2008.

Then that memorable playoff moment happened, coupled with that moment between Lowry and DeRozan. Lowry, who was a free agent that summer, opted to re-sign with the Raptors and take them to the playoffs six more times consecutively, culminating in 2019’s NBA championship.

While the 2019 title run will undoubtedly be remembered for Kawhi Leonard’s heroics, when the Raptors needed it most, it was Lowry who delivered that final knockout blow.

After failing to close in Game 5 at home, Lowry ensured that the 2019 Finals were going to end in Game 6 as he came out like a house on fire, going on a personal 11-2 run against the Warriors to start the game and finishing the first quarter a five-for-six from the field, including four three-pointers, scoring 15 of his 26 points in that opening frame alone to set the tone and pave the way for the Raptors first-ever, and currently only, NBA title.

Though painful for Raptors fans to remember, the “LeBronto” era was a key part of Lowry’s tenure with the club, as the team simply could never make it past LeBron James in the playoffs.

This is why Feb. 23, 2016, is an important date in Raptors history.

Lowry ended up going for a career-best 43 points on an ultra-efficient 15-for-20 shooting, while also adding nine assists and grabbing five rebounds. More important than all of that, however, was the step-back jumper Lowry hit in Matthew Dellavedova’s eye with his foot on the line that served as the game-winner after James missed a three to try to win it with time expiring.

“My first game-winner in my illustrious 10-year career,” Lowry said after the game.

Though it ultimately took James jumping ship to the Western Conference for the Raptors to finally get over the hump, that cold, mid-February night in 2016 was a cathartic one for Toronto fans who finally saw their team get one over The King. That it came on a career night for Lowry only proved to be icing on the cake.

The greatest comeback in Raptors history

Trailing by as much as 30 on Dec. 22, 2019, Lowry helped orchestrate the greatest comeback in Raptors history.

Toronto entered the fourth quarter trailing by 23 and, with one of the old “Lowry-and-the-bench lineups that included the Raptors legend with Malcolm Miller, Terence Davis, Rondae Hollis-Jefferson and Chris Boucher, Lowry exploded for 20 points in the final period on seven-for-10 shooting from the floor and a four-for-six mark from deep as the Raptors pulled off a miraculous 110-107 victory.

“I’m not sure I’ve seen anything like it,” then-Toronto coach Nick Nurse said after the game.

Added Boucher: “All he said was ‘keep pushing.’ He led us the right way, put us in great spots. Kyle does that every time. Even when people don’t see it. Kyle’s a great leader.”

Never one for the big spotlight himself, Lowry deflected all praise to his teammates.

“I didn’t do it,” Lowry said. “We had a great team effort. Malcolm, Terence Davis, Rondae and Chris Boucher. I give them all the credit today.”

The 53-minute masterpiece in the bubble

As part of Toronto’s spirited title defence during the 2020 playoffs that took place in the Disney World bubble, Lowry had one of the best games he — or anyone — ever played.

In a series that had already seen Lowry throw one of the most ridiculous cross-court inbounds passes over seven-foot-five Tacko Fall to OG Anunoby who didn’t shoot trying to miss in Game 3, Lowry played a career-high 53 minutes as he went for 33 points eight rebounds and six assists on 12-for-20 shooting, including an acrobatic jumper that the got to fall with 11.7 seconds in double overtime that proved to be enough to put the Raptors over the hump and force a Game 7.

Lowry ended up playing the entire second half and both overtimes of that game. Even more impressive, he did so after needing stitches post-game to close a cut that opened up after he got hit in the second quarter.

While Lowry will become the second Raptor to see his jersey hung up in the rafters of Scotiabank Arena, there’s still a good chance he’ll get to become the first Raptor immortalized with a statue.

If/when this happens, the pose they should make for Lowry is him taking charge.

Of all the signature moments in Lowry’s career, the one thing that most people likely remember him doing is putting his body on the line and drawing an offensive foul on the opponent.

Despite being listed at just six feet, Lowry was never a defensive liability with the Raptors — far from it in fact. A big reason for this was his strength, toughness and defensive anticipation, all traits that, much to the chagrin of Raptors opponents, saw him draw 313 offensive fouls in 601 regular-season games and another 62 in 84 playoff games for Toronto.

Lowry brought many skills to the table as a basketball player, but his uncanny ability to step in front of an out-of-control defender time and again is one he may be able to claim to be the greatest at.

The loyalty and love for Toronto and the Raptors

More than anything, Lowry will forever be loved by Raptors fans for the loyalty and love he consistently showed the city.

The image of Lowry’s smile after the Raptors won the 2019 Eastern Conference Finals is one that will never be forgotten, as is the sheer joy he felt upon the team actually winning it all, both in the immediate aftermath during the locker-room celebration and the parade.

During Lowry’s final season with the Raptors, he made it clear that he was going to retire a Raptor. Even after he left via a sign-and-trade to the Miami Heat and then to his hometown Philadelphia 76ers, he always knew where home was.

During a January game this past season between the Sixers and Raptors, the home Toronto crowd demanded that Nurse check Lowry in. When the former Raptors coach acquiesced, Raptors fans went crazy, giving Lowry a standing ovation.

You couldn’t wipe the smile off Lowry’s face in that moment.

That’s why it shouldn’t come as any surprise that Lowry is making good on his promise that he will retire as a Raptor.

The relationship between him and the franchise is akin to family. And you don’t turn your back on family.

Prospects of Interest: What Bateman, Southisene bring Blue Jays in Gausman deal

Published

on

The Toronto Blue Jays began an apparent sell-off ahead of this year’s trade deadline on Sunday night, dealing rotation stalwart Kevin Gausman to the Chicago Cubs for a pair of prospects.

Heading back to the Blue Jays in the trade are Chicago’s No. 13 and No. 21 prospects, per MLB Pipeline, Ty Southisene and Brett Bateman.

The duo fits right in with the type of player Toronto has prioritized in recent seasons in that they make a ton of contact and rarely strike out. Southisene is a 21-year-old shortstop who reached high-A this season after being selected in the fourth round of the 2024 draft out of Basic Academy in Nevada, and Bateman is a 24-year-old outfielder who has spent the entire season in triple-A.

In its immediate post-trade update, MLB Pipeline slotted Southisene as Toronto’s No. 17 prospect and slid Bateman in at No. 20.

There will be no replacing the professionalism of Gausman on or off the field, but with the 35-year-old set to enter free agency at the end of the season, the Blue Jays will hope to have found some talent to help their major-league roster down the road in Southisene and Bateman.

With Monday’s 6 p.m. ET deadline right around the corner, here’s a closer look at what Toronto landed for the two-time all-star.

Age: 24
Position: Outfield
Swings: Left | Throws: Left
Height: Five-foot-10 | Weight: 170 pounds
Level: Triple-A Iowa
2026 Stats: 82 Games | .312 AVG | 3 HR | 33 RBI | 20 SB | .430 OBP | .421 SLG | 17.1 BB% | 18.9 K%

An eighth-round pick of the Cubs out of Minnesota in 2023, Bateman has used his speed to make an impact on both sides of the ball in his stops at each level of the minors.

Bateman has 83 career stolen bases in the minors while also using his 70-grade wheels to “beat out hits and chase down balls from gap to gap in centre field,” per MLB Pipeline’s scouting report.

The 24-year-old’s strong running ability pairs nicely with his approach at the plate, where he rarely expands the strike zone and puts pressure on the defence by putting the ball in play.

Bateman entered Sunday ranked in the 85th percentile or higher among triple-A hitters in walk, chase and whiff percentage.

Where Bateman’s game is lacking is in the power department.

The left-handed-swinging outfielder has just three homers this season and six for his professional career. This season in Iowa, Bateman’s max exit velocity peaked at 105.7 m.p.h. — a number that would rank sixth lowest among qualified major-leaguers.

He also struggles to hit the ball in the air, carrying a 52.5 per cent groundball rate in 2026.

Despite some of those soft contact numbers, Bateman has actually seen his slugging percentage jump to a career-best .421 this season. The power production stems from the 18 doubles he hit for the Cubs, which is also the most he has hit in a single minor-league season.

Although he doesn’t bring any big-league lineage to the Blue Jays, Bateman surely grew up around the game, thanks to his dad, Keith.

Keith served as the head coach of the Augsburg University baseball team — an NCAA Division III school in Minneapolis — from 2004 to this June before accepting a position as the associate athletic director at Concordia College-Moorhead.

The elder Bateman coached three players who signed professional contracts and earned Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Coach of the Year honours in 2005.

Before getting the coaching gig at Augsburg, Keith was a catcher at Bethel University in St. Paul from 1995 to 1998.

Age: 21
Position: Shortstop
Swings: Right | Throws: Right
Height: Five-foot-seven | Weight: 170 pounds
Levels: Low-A Myrtle Beach/high-A South Bend
2026 Stats: 66 Games | .306 AVG | 12 XBH | 35 RBI | 31 SB | .425 OBP | .372 SLG | 12.8 BB% | 11.6 K%

Much like Bateman, Southisene excels at putting the ball in play and using his legs to make a difference.

The 21-year-old, however, skews a little more to the extreme than his outfield counterpart. Southisene posted the lowest in-zone whiff rate of any Cubs prospect this season, per Baseball America, which has helped him walk more than he struck out as a pro.

Southisene has also been given the green light to run from Day 1 with Chicago. Over his two seasons of affiliated ball, he has stolen 72 bases while being caught just 14 times.

The five-foot-seven middle infielder’s contact-heavy approach also comes with a lack of power, as Southisene has yet to hit a minor-league home run.

He was initially assigned to the Arizona Complex League in 2025, but spent just one game at the level before being sent to Myrtle Beach, where he returned to start 2026.

Southisene then received his second promotion after 22 games at low-A this season, pushing his way up with a .745 OPS to open the year.

Shortstop or second base?

Southisene has spent most of his time in the minors up the middle, playing primarily second base in 2025 before moving to shortstop in 2026.

Time will tell where his long-term defensive home ends up, but MLB Pipeline wrote that the 18U U.S. National Team alum “has the instincts” to make the most of his speed and athleticism, and that he “compensates for his average arm strength with a quick release” at shortstop.

Southisene is just one of four baseball-playing brothers. His twin, Tee, is a pitcher at the College of Southern Nevada; his younger brother, Tate, is a top prospect in the Atlanta Braves system; and his youngest brother, Troy, is an Oregon State commit.

While they played together in high school, all three of Ty, Tate and Tee also shared the field together as members of the USA Prime National 17U team in 2023.

Tate was selected by Atlanta in the first round of the 2025 draft and has shot through the Braves’ affiliates, being recently promoted to double-A. Across three levels this season, Tate has 12 home runs, 18 doubles and 45 stolen bases.

Tadej Pogacar to ride Vuelta a Espana in bid to complete Grand Tour set

Published

on

Tadej Pogacar will bid to complete a clean sweep of the Grand Tours as he returns to the Vuelta a Espana for the first time in seven years.

Pogacar wrapped up a fifth Tour de France title with another dominant performance in July, and has now been confirmed as the leader of a strong UAE Team Emirates XRG unit for the race in Spain.

The Slovenian has not competed in the race since announcing his arrival as a stage-racing force with a third-place finish in 2019, and will bid for a first red jersey.

The winner of the Giro d’Italia in 2024, a Vuelta triumph would make Pogacar the ninth male rider to win the general classification at all three of cycling’s three-week races.

“I’m excited to say I’m going back to La Vuelta. It was my first ever Grand Tour back in 2019 and an amazing experience,” Pogacar said. “Spain is a country I love to visit and race in and I think the time is right to go back.

“The motivation is high to finish off the year in a good way and the Vuelta will be a big target. The team is strong and we hope to do good things.”

The Vuelta begins in Monaco, where Pogacar resides, on 22 August, and will cross in France and Andorra before finishing in Granada on 13 September.

Pogacar can count on strong support from Joao Almeida – second in last year’s race – Jay Vine and Pavel Sivakov, with a strong climbing trio likely to be useful in the high mountains. The talented young Spaniard Pablo Torres will make his Grand Tour debut on home roads.

Primoz Roglic, Pogacar’s compatriot, and Wout van Aert are among the other big names due to race the Vuelta.

Antoine Semenyo excited by new Man City role after Enzo Maresca talk

Published

on

Antoine Semenyo can’t wait to take on defenders every week after getting new orders from Manchester City boss Enzo Maresca. The 26-year-old enjoyed a whirlwind start at the Etihad after a January switch from Bournemouth and is not planning on letting full-backs have any rest this season.

That was on display in City’s first friendly on Saturday in Hong Kong as he cut through the Inter defence on countless occasions from the left in the first half, setting up Divin Mubama to tap in the opening goal. Semenyo spoke after the game about fooling his defender by going on the outside a few times before cutting in onto his right foot.

Maresca had said he wanted to see some new patterns from training in the Inter game, and wants his wingers to play high and wide as they did at Leicester and Chelsea. Having noticed that when he was playing for Bournemouth, Semenyo was excited to hear Maresca would be succeeding Pep Guardiola and his first conversation with the new manager about his role for the coming season did not disappoint.

“From day one he’s got his ideas to us,” Semenyo said, speaking at Ahmad Tea’s Preparation is Everything event in Hong Kong. “I reported a little bit later than some of the boys and I’ve had individual meetings with him on how he wants to set up, how he wants to play, his wide men, and just overall as a team.

“It’s been good so far. I think his ideas are great – quite similar to Pep. If you watched the [Inter] game, you would have seen a couple of his ideas play out and it was good. And I’m looking forward to it.

“When he got appointed, that was the first thing I thought about because when I’ve played Chelsea previously when he was there, his wide men were always high and wide and quite free. That was one of the things that excited me the most when he got appointed and it’s exciting for me as a winger. I get to have one v one situations most of the game and I’m looking forward to it.

“Some games Pep wanted me wide, some games he wanted me inside a little bit more. It was just depending on our opposition. But Enzo is just: out wide and when you get the ball, just create opportunities. It’s music to my ears. It’s exciting, for sure.”

Semenyo arriving at the Etihad in winter was music to City ears. He galvanised a team that had been threatening to buckle under the strain of injuries, with his goals crucial to setting the team up to win both domestic cup competitions as well as push Arsenal to the final week of the Premier League.

There was also the song of the season when the Milky song Just The Way You Are went viral from the concourses to the stands and then the dressing room. Semenyo has been thrilled with the welcome he has had from supporters, and he gave them another moment to savour with an exquisite winning goal in the FA Cup final against Chelsea.

It has been a lot to take in for a man who isn’t even close to completing the first year of his City career, never mind adding in a World Cup with Ghana. The 26-year-old did some work on his holiday to make sure he would be sharp arriving for City’s tour, and was the best player in the first game.

Having secured the big move that he wanted, Semenyo didn’t want to be unprepared for what he was walking into. And after finally getting some time to relax and appreciate how much he has already achieved, he is ready to start all over again with new instructions from Maresca.

“While I’ve been on holiday, I’ve had time to reflect on everything. And yeah it feels like so long ago but it’s also a dream as well. I never ever thought I would be playing in the FA Cup final for one and scoring the winner is another thing – a dream come true.

“When you think about Man City, United, Arsenal, they’re top calibre clubs and they’re competing for all the trophies and appearing in the Champions League every year – and you have to adjust to it as a player. You have no choice, no-one’s going to give you a blueprint on how it’s going to be done, you just have to chuck yourself right in there and just see how it goes.

“I’m lucky, we’ve got top professionals, top management staff, we’ve got guys behind the scenes at Manchester City as well. They make you feel comfortable and they help me a lot, for sure.”

Antoine Semenyo is a global ambassador for Ahmad Tea and was speaking at the brand’s Preparation is Everything event in Hong Kong highlighting the importance of preparation, consistency and craftsmanship. For more information go to: www.ahmadtea.com.

Wales becomes first nation to withdraw support for Fifa president Gianni Infantino

Published

on

The Football Association of Wales (FAW) has officially withdrawn its support for Fifa president Gianni Infantino‘s re-election bid, becoming the first football association to do so.

The decision follows his controversial, bungled attempt to sell off stakes in the World Cup to private investors.

Infantino, whose decade-long reign faces increasing scrutiny, announced on Friday night that he was shelving the widely-denounced plan, which had been rejected by three confederations after first being revealed earlier in the week.

Prime Minister Andy Burnham has since stated Infantino is the “wrong man” to lead Fifa, while the Football Association (FA) called for a “full and robust review” into his leadership.

In a statement, the FAW confirmed: “The Football Association of Wales hereby confirms its withdrawal of support for the candidature of Mr Gianni Infantino, for re-election as Fifa president for the 2027–2031 term.”

The association cited “recent failures in good governance, processes, leadership, values, stakeholder management, communications and sound judgement” as reasons.

It added: “Mr Infantino has lost the confidence of the FAW to remain at the helm of world football. Failing to put the best interests of football first is a failure we cannot accept.”

Wales withdrawing its support for Infantino comes after Uefa, European football’s governing body, declared a loss of confidence in the Fifa boss on Saturday.

A statement read: “The current Fifa leadership has not only lost Uefa’s confidence but also that of many other members of the football family,” it said.

Uefa quoted a speech Infantino made when he came to power a decade ago in a lengthy statement outlining its position. The statement “welcomed” the decision to cancel the scheme, adding: “The proposal was unanimously rejected by Uefa’s national associations and by many other federations and confederations of all sizes around the world, whose job it is to protect football.

“Uefa thanks all the fans, leagues, clubs, players, individuals, associations and confederations that opposed the scheme, alongside the many Prime Ministers, Heads of State and commentators who have demonstrated to the Fifa President that football is not for sale.”

Concacaf and the AFC also criticised the proposals, pitting a significant number of Fifa’s member associations in direct opposition to the governing body.

The English FA released a statement later on Saturday that also questioned Fifa’s leadership, writing: “We fully support Uefa’s position. It is time for a full and robust review of FIFA’s leadership and governance to ensure that the global game is run transparently, for the benefit of all 211 member nations and with the long-term stewardship of football at its heart.”

Infantino is due to stand for re-election in March next year.

Rawiller guides Run Harry Run to victory in 2026 Rosehill Handicap

Published

on

Jockeys on galloping horses jumping a hurdle during a daytime horse race on a grass track under a clear blue sky, with a viewing tower on the left.

Nash Rawiller put on a front-running clinic, guiding Run Harry Run to a determined win in the Kia Ora Bloodlines to Headlines Handicap (1500m) at Rosehill on Saturday.

The champion jockey masterfully controlled the pace of the Lindsay Park galloper, extracting crucial efforts from the gelding to hold off a late challenge from Narbold.

After leading throughout, Run Harry Run, the $3 favourite, faced a stern test when Williamsburg ($16) drew alongside in the straight. The favourite responded admirably under Rawiller’s guidance, finding another length to deny the closing Narbold ($6) by a half-head. Williamsburg finished a further three-quarters of a length behind in third.

Rawiller expressed his confidence in the horse’s finishing ability, despite some pre-race concerns about the 1500-metre distance.

“I knew I still had a kick,” Rawiller said.

“They (connections) were a touch worried with the 1500 that he could be a touch vulnerable. I just tried to travel in a beautiful rhythm. I wanted to go for him flat out when I wanted to, and thankfully he dug deep when he needed to.

“He came up in great order. The way the track is racing probably helped me a touch. Apart from jumping on his Melbourne leg on the corner post, he did everything spot-on.”

Lindsay Park racing manager Anthony Feroce attributed the victory to Rawiller’s exceptional ride.

“He’s a horse that has never run a really strong 1500, and I mentioned that to him before the race. I think he kept that in mind. It was a great ride,” Feroce commented.

The Ben, Will and JD Hayes-trained Run Harry Run added another metropolitan success to his record, while providing Rawiller with a riding double at the Rosehill meeting.

The accomplished hoop had earlier partnered Matthew Dunn-trained Wayburn to victory in the Highway Handicap (1200m).

The New Orleans Saints placed 24-year-old wide receiver Ja’Lynn Polk on the reserve/retired list on Sunday.

A reason for Polk’s decision to retire was not yet known. Head coach Kellen Moore said Polk had been excused from the past two training camp practices for personal reasons. The receiver’s Instagram account also appeared to be deactivated or removed as of Sunday evening.

Polk was the 37th overall pick of the 2024 NFL Draft by the New England Patriots. As a rookie, Polk played in 15 games, making seven starts, and totaled 12 receptions for 87 yards and two touchdowns.

He did not play in 2025 due to a shoulder injury. While Polk was on injured reserve in September, the Patriots traded him to the Saints along with a 2028 seventh-round pick in exchange for a 2027 sixth-rounder.

Tony Bellew says the UK has only produced two truly elite fighters

Published

on

Tony Bellew has outlined the distinction between “world-class” and “elite-level”, believing just two British legends fall into the latter category.

While winning a major title should, in theory, mean guaranteed world-class status, it often depends on whether that particular fighter has crafted a world-class resume.

Likewise, an elite-level fighter must consistently prove themselves against top-class opposition in order to be immortalised as one of the all-time greats.

With that in mind, Bellew has named Terence Crawford, Oleksandr Usyk and Canelo Alvarez as three of boxing’s elite-level operators in recent years, providing an idea of what it takes to reach such a lofty standard.

In terms of British fighters, meanwhile, the former world cruiserweight champion believes that only Lennox Lewis and Joe Calzaghe qualify for this exclusive club.

By dethroning Evander Holyfield in 1999, Lewis became the undisputed heavyweight champion and ultimately defeated every man he fought.

Similarly, Calzaghe ended his career as an unbeaten former world champion, having made a super-middleweight record of 21 consecutive title defences.

Bellew has therefore told Fight Your Corner that these two Hall of Famers deserve to be regarded as elite-level icons.

“There’s world-class fighters and then there’s elite-level fighters. There’s very few elite-level fighters. I think this country’s produced two in Calzaghe and Lennox Lewis.

“Naseem Hamed is possibly [elite-level], but his resume doesn’t really stack up. I’m talking elite-level fighters – fighters who’ve got the chin, who can adapt in fights.”

While not quite joining Bellew’s group of elite-level fighters, Hamed nonetheless made 15 consecutive featherweight title defences before losing to fellow Hall of Famer Marco Antonio Barrera.

Jamshedpur FC Players Make Emotional Appeal As Owners Look To Dismantle Senior Team

Published

on

Jamshedpur FC players, including two senior India footballers, made an emotional appeal to club owners Tata Group to reconsider its decision to withdraw from the Indian Super League (ISL) and dismantle the senior team. Jamshedpur FC announced on Friday that it was pulling out of the ISL, just hours after missing the deadline to pay the participation fee for the upcoming season, which begins September 4. It also decided to wind up the first team. “It was a shocking news for me. I didn’t expect the Tata Group to make such a decision. It is my humble request that they change their decision and participate in the ISL. Because this is a huge platform for an entire generation,” midfielder Pronay Halder told PTI on Monday.

“I have many memories (of the club). For me, Jamshedpur FC is honestly an emotion. I hope that the heads of Tata Steel and Tata Group will reconsider and change their decision,” said Halder, who has played for India in more than 20 matches.

The 33-year-old Halder said he has been associated with JFC as a player since the club won the League Winner’s Shield Trophy in the 2021-22 ISL season. Before spending six years at JFC, he was playing for the Tata Football Academy.

“For example, Nikhil Barla, Puya, Albino Gomes, Mohamed Sanan, they have recently made the national senior team in London (for Unity Cup). You can see that a lot of young players, under-19s, under-22s, step-by-step, this is a huge opportunity for the senior level. This is my hope, my 100% belief,” he observed.

Goalkeeper Albino Gomes, who has played for India in one match, fully agreed with Halder.

“Shutting down this club means, I can’t digest it. I just want to appeal to the Tata group to reconsider their decision. Because this isn’t about one year or two years, it’s about the future of Indian football,” said the 32-year-old who came in as substitute for Gurpreet Singh Sandhu in an international friendly against Tajikistan in June.

“Because a lot of young players are looking forward to this group, to this club. And everyone dreams of playing for Jamshedpur because they have good facilities. They have everything. They are one of the best in India. You just have to come and play. That’s it,” he said.

“I never thought that Jamshedpur FC would shut down so easily. All the players were completely shocked.” Gomes was also in the India squad for the Unity Cup in London in May.

“I came at JFC two years ago. This club gave me an opportunity to return to Indian football. I was recovering from an injury, and they helped me a lot. And they gave me this opportunity and I made my debut for India. I am really grateful to this club,” he pointed out.

Joining the chorus, young JFC midfielder Nikhil Barla, who graduated to the ranks from TFA, said: “Personally and emotionally, I am feeling very disturbed. I would like to appeal to the Tata Group, the head of Tata Steel, to think about the decisions they have taken and the future of the young players.

“Whatever I am, it is because of Jamshedpur FC and TFA. I am a local player. This is my request and I believe the Tata Group to do something good.

“The club you are watching and supporting from the beginning and playing for it, to see a dream club (winding up) is a heart-breaking moment for me,” he added.
