By the time The Wheel of Time became the show it was supposed to be, Prime Video had already decided it was over. Amazon canceled the fantasy series in May 2025, just two months after its best-reviewed season premiered. That was a real loss, not just for the fanbase but for fantasy television in general, because nothing else on the air was working with source material this deep. Robert Jordan’s series spans 14 novels, hundreds of characters, and thousands of years of fictional history. It occupies a strange middle ground in the genre, with the mythic, chosen-one architecture of Tolkien’s work and the political scheming, moral grayness, and sprawling cast of George R.R. Martin’s. For years, it was the fantasy epic that everyone said was unadaptable. Then Prime Video tried anyway.

When the series debuted in November 2021, it arrived in a streaming landscape that was already crowded with high-fantasy competition and skeptical book readers. Amazon had bet billions on The Rings of Power, and The Wheel of Time was supposed to be its scrappier, narrative-driven counterpart. Where Rings of Power chased spectacle, Wheel of Time chased story, building out a world where magic is gendered and feared, where prophecy is a political weapon, and where the line between savior and destroyer depends on who’s telling the tale.

The Game of Thrones comparisons were inevitable, so the show leaned into them. Rosamund Pike’s Moiraine operated with the same calculated ruthlessness as any Westerosi power player, and the ensemble of young leads mirrored the way Thrones scattered its Starks across a continent and let the audience track each thread.

Sure, Seasons 1 and 2 were uneven. COVID shutdowns gutted the first season’s finale when Barney Harris, who played Mat Cauthon, departed during production. The second season rebuilt on steadier ground, but the pacing still felt like a show trying to compress thousands of pages into eight-episode orders, racing past the character moments that made Jordan’s books so memorable. Critics were mixed, while audiences were patient but vocal about what was missing. Then Season 3 arrived in March 2025, and everything clicked.

The show’s third season earned a 97% critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes, a record for the series and one of the highest marks any fantasy show on any platform has posted. It debuted as the No. 1 show on Amazon in dozens of countries and pulled 534 million minutes of viewing in its premiere week, slightly up from Season 2’s launch. Collider’s own review said it raised the bar in every way. For the first time, the adaptation felt like it was living up to the scope of Jordan’s world instead of just alluding to it.

Of course, the elevator pitch hadn’t really changed. Pike’s Moiraine pulls five young villagers into a world-ending conflict because one of them is the reincarnation of a figure prophesied to save the world… or break it. The show splits them across continents from there, and what makes it work is that it takes every one of those five arcs seriously. There are characters learning to wield dangerous magic they can barely control, ones discovering abilities that terrify them, outcasts being exploited precisely because they underestimate themselves. By Season 3, every thread is paying off at the same time. That season adapts The Shadow Rising, widely considered the strongest book in Jordan’s series, and it shows.

The Aiel Waste storyline drops the show into a visual and cultural landscape that feels nothing like the European-coded fantasy audiences are used to, and Episode 4, “The Road to the Spear,” is the standout: a hallucinatory trip through thousands of years of history with Josha Stradowski playing seven versions of his character in a single episode. It’s the kind of swing that fantasy television rarely takes these days, one that leverages the otherworldly promise the genre brings.

Why ‘The Wheel of Time’ Is Still Worth a Watch

But two months after the Season 3 drop, Amazon canceled it. The decision blindsided fans and the creative team alike. Showrunner Rafe Judkins broke his silence in early June, calling it “a devastating blow,” saying the fans “deserve to see the story finished.” He pointed to a broader industry trend of shorter seasons and fewer renewals, framing the cancellation as symptomatic of a business model that has grown hostile to the kind of long-form storytelling a 14-book series demands.

But the cost-per-viewer calculation obscures what was actually happening on screen. By Season 3, the show had found its identity, the specific thing it could do that no other fantasy series on television was doing: balancing intimate character work with a mythology that operates on a genuinely cosmic scale, where time itself is cyclical, and the past doesn’t just inform the present but literally repeats through it. That’s the cruelest part of the cancellation. The show didn’t get worse and get axed. It got substantially better and got tossed in the streaming dumpster anyway.

But the franchise isn’t dead. Iwot Studios announced in March 2026 that animated projects are in development, with Arcane producer Thomas Vu attached. There’s talk of animated movies and a video game. Judkins himself expressed hope that the live-action version might find a new home, invoking The Expanse’s jump from Syfy to Amazon as precedent. But the live-action series as it existed, with its cast and the momentum of its best season, is gone. The show, though, is still right where Amazon left it. Three seasons, all streaming on Prime Video, each one better than the last. It’s worth a watch, despite knowing how it ended.

‘Collateral’ (2004)

Collateral takes one Los Angeles cab driver and traps him inside a professional killer’s schedule. Max Durocher (Jamie Foxx) has spent years talking about opening his own limousine company while driving the same night shift and postponing every real step toward it. Vincent (Tom Cruise) gets into his taxi, offers him hundreds of dollars for several stops, and soon reveals that each address belongs to someone he has been hired to kill. Max is suddenly driving a murderer across the city while police officers follow a trail they cannot yet connect to him.

The film understands how terrifying competence can be. Vincent kills without hesitation, adapts whenever a plan changes, and speaks about human life as if he’s casually discussing traffic. Max begins the night avoiding conflict and ends up making choices under pressure that he has delayed making in ordinary life. Both Max and Vincent create a tense imbalance where control keeps changing hands without ever feeling secure. Even Los Angeles looks unfamiliar after midnight, full of empty trains, fluorescent offices, crowded clubs, and strangers who never realise how close death passed beside them.

‘A History of Violence’ (2005)

A History of Violence begins with Tom Stall (Viggo Mortensen) living a quiet life in Indiana with his wife Edie Stall (Maria Bello) and their two children. When two armed criminals threaten his diner, Tom kills them with shocking speed and becomes a national hero. The attention brings Carl Fogarty (Ed Harris) to town, a scarred gangster who insists that Tom is really Joey Cusack, a violent man connected to the Philadelphia mob. Tom denies everything, but his family starts noticing how naturally violence comes to him.

David Cronenberg adapted John Wagner and Vince Locke’s graphic novel into a thriller that keeps asking whether a person can leave an old identity behind or merely hide it under better habits. Tom’s actions protect his family, yet every burst of violence exposes another piece of a life they never consented to share. The sex between Tom and Edie also changes once the truth starts emerging, moving from playful intimacy to anger, fear, and damaged attraction. The quiet dinner near the end says more than another confrontation could. Tom returns home, and nobody at that table knows whether the man sitting down belongs there anymore.

‘The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo’ (2011)

Few modern studio thrillers are as cold, detailed, and openly hostile as The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. Disgraced journalist Mikael Blomkvist (Daniel Craig) is hired by wealthy industrialist Henrik Vanger (Christopher Plummer) to investigate the disappearance of his niece Harriet Vanger, who vanished from a family gathering forty years earlier. The case leads Mikael through photographs, biblical references, business records, and decades of violence hidden behind one of Sweden’s most powerful families. Lisbeth Salander (Rooney Mara) joins the investigation after initially being hired to examine Mikael himself.

Lisbeth is brilliant with computers and almost impossible to intimidate, but the film never treats her trauma as stylish character decoration. Her guardian abuses the legal power he has over her, and her response is planned with the same precision she later brings to the Vanger case. Rooney Mara’s physical transformation drew attention, though the anger, isolation, and guarded loyalty underneath the appearance stay far more compelling. Mikael and Lisbeth solve the central mystery through different skills and slowly develop trust without becoming a conventional detective couple. Her last attempt to reach toward him hurts precisely because it is so small. She buys the gift, sees him with Erika Berger (Robin Wright), and quietly turns away.

‘Sicario’ (2015)

Sicario follows FBI agent Kate Macer (Emily Blunt) after a raid in Arizona uncovers dozens of bodies hidden inside a house controlled by a Mexican cartel. Her record on kidnapping cases earns her a place on a federal task force led by Matt Graver (Josh Brolin), though nobody gives her a clear explanation of its real purpose. The operation takes her across the border into Juárez, through a terrifying traffic jam, and deeper into a campaign where legal authority has become almost impossible to separate from revenge.

Kate believes rules can keep violence from becoming corruption. Graver sees rules as obstacles, while Alejandro Gillick (Benicio del Toro) carries a personal mission that the government has decided to use. The border convoy establishes that imbalance immediately. Armed men surround the vehicles, civilians are trapped nearby, and Kate has seconds to understand a threat everyone else recognised earlier. Emily Blunt’s character remains capable throughout, but capability offers little protection in an operation designed to keep her uninformed. Kate signs the document at gunpoint, and Alejandro advises her to find a quieter town where the law still resembles what she believes it should be.

‘Heat’ (1995)

Heat is often reduced to the historic pairing of Al Pacino and Robert De Niro, even though the movie contains an entire city of people being damaged by the same obsession. Neil McCauley (Robert De Niro) leads a disciplined robbery crew and refuses to keep anything he cannot abandon within thirty seconds. Lieutenant Vincent Hanna (Al Pacino) lives with similar intensity on the other side of the law. Both understand their professions better than they understand ordinary relationships, and neither is willing to step away while there is still another move available.

The coffee-shop conversation earns its reputation through honesty rather than grandstanding. Neil and Hanna recognise each other immediately, share the private cost of their lives, and accept that one will still kill the other if the situation demands it. Around them, Chris Shiherlis (Val Kilmer) loses Charlene Shiherlis (Ashley Judd), Michael Cheritto (Tom Sizemore) risks everything for another score, and Donald Breedan (Dennis Haysbert) takes one desperate chance to escape a humiliating job. The director, Michael Mann, reportedly spent years researching police work and professional criminals, which shows in the surveillance, weapon handling, and downtown shootout. Yet the emotional core stays painfully simple. These men can read danger across a street and still fail to understand the people waiting at home.

‘L.A. Confidential’ (1997)

Los Angeles in 1953 sells sunshine, movie stars, and clean police work to the public while corruption spreads behind the photographs. Three officers approach that world from completely different directions. Bud White (Russell Crowe) protects abused women and solves problems with force. Ed Exley (Guy Pearce) believes procedure and ambition can take him to the top. Jack Vincennes (Kevin Spacey) enjoys celebrity, television consulting, and selling arrests to a gossip magazine. A massacre at the Nite Owl coffee shop pulls all three toward the same conspiracy.

The screenplay condenses James Ellroy’s enormous novel without losing the sense that every institution has learned how to manage appearances. Police officers stage evidence, politicians protect vice operations, and tabloid publisher Sid Hudgens (Danny DeVito) turns private misery into entertainment. Lynn Bracken (Kim Basinger) also understands the city’s obsession with imitation. She is paid to resemble Veronica Lake while longing to be treated as herself. The investigation forces Bud, Ed, and Jack to confront the compromises each has normalised. Jack’s whispered final clue, “Rollo Tomasi,” becomes a trap for the man who thought he had erased every loose end. Justice survives, though Los Angeles immediately begins preparing the next version of the story.

‘The Departed’ (2006)

Two informants spend The Departed trying to identify each other while serving opposite sides of Boston’s criminal world. Billy Costigan (Leonardo DiCaprio) enters Frank Costello (Jack Nicholson)’s organisation under police orders and slowly loses any stable life outside the assignment. Colin Sullivan (Matt Damon) joins the state police after being raised and protected by Costello, feeding him information while building the public image of a successful officer. Both men live through phones, coded messages, staged conversations, and the constant fear that one mistake will expose everything.

Martin Scorsese’s crime thriller draws from the Hong Kong film Infernal Affairs, then fills the story with Boston identity, Catholic guilt, family history, and institutional rot. Billy is officially working for justice, but his handlers leave him psychologically stranded. Colin has status, a home, and a relationship with Madolyn Madden (Vera Farmiga), yet his entire identity depends on service to a man he increasingly despises. The elevator deaths still hit with savage speed since the movie refuses to reward anyone for surviving longer than expected. Colin briefly believes he has escaped. Then Dignam (Mark Wahlberg) appears in his apartment, and the silence says exactly how much faith the film has left in official justice.

‘Zodiac’ (2007)

Zodiac is about the people who spend years trying to solve a case that refuses to give them the closure they need. The Zodiac killer sends letters, ciphers, threats, and pieces of evidence to newspapers after attacking victims across Northern California. Cartoonist Robert Graysmith (Jake Gyllenhaal) becomes consumed by the puzzle. Reporter Paul Avery (Robert Downey Jr.) sees the case damage his career and health. Inspectors Dave Toschi (Mark Ruffalo) and Bill Armstrong (Anthony Edwards) chase leads across jurisdictions while witnesses, handwriting samples, and suspect descriptions keep failing to form one complete answer.

The fear comes from uncertainty rather than constant murder. The movie recreates the attacks with such controlled detail, then spends far more time on interviews, paperwork, phone calls, and the emotional cost of obsession. Graysmith’s family watches him turn their home into an archive. Toschi’s professional reputation suffers after years of public pressure. Avery retreats into alcohol as the story he once controlled begins controlling him. Zodiac offers a compelling suspect but refuses the relief of legal certainty. Real life never supplied it.

‘Oldboy’ (2003)

Oldboy begins with Oh Dae-su (Choi Min-sik) being kidnapped and imprisoned in a private room for fifteen years without being told why. A television becomes his only connection to the outside world, where he learns that his wife has been murdered and that he has been framed for it. He trains, keeps track of time, and prepares for revenge. Then his captor suddenly releases him, hands him money and a phone, and gives him five days to discover the reason behind his punishment. This is interestingly developed from a Japanese manga.

Park Chan-wook adapted the Japanese manga into a revenge tragedy where finding the truth becomes far worse than remaining ignorant. The hallway fight, side-scrolling construction, all of it creates an excellent mystery. Dae-su treats vengeance as a path back to dignity, while Lee Woo-jin (Yoo Ji-tae) has spent years designing an answer to an old humiliation. Every clue pushes Dae-su toward the exact emotional position his enemy wants. The punishment reaches beyond imprisonment and destroys his understanding of love, memory, and choice. Oldboy is a difficult recommendation and an unforgettable one. Go in knowing as little as possible, then try sleeping normally afterward.

‘No Country for Old Men’ (2007)

No Country for Old Men follows Llewelyn Moss (Josh Brolin) after he discovers the remains of a drug deal in the Texas desert and takes a case containing two million dollars. He knows someone will come looking for it and prepares as carefully as he can. Anton Chigurh (Javier Bardem) follows with a tracking device, a captive-bolt pistol, and a belief that chance can excuse whatever decision he has already made. Sheriff Ed Tom Bell (Tommy Lee Jones) tries to understand the violence spreading across his county while sensing that his experience may no longer be enough.

This is created by the Coen brothers and they remain remarkably faithful to Cormac McCarthy’s novel here, including its refusal to shape the chase into a familiar showdown. Moss is resourceful, Chigurh is relentless, and Bell increasingly watches from the edge as events move past him. Carla Jean Moss (Kelly Macdonald) sees through that coin-toss performance and refuses to participate. Bell’s closing dream, killings, his father riding ahead carrying fire into the darkness, and Bell waking before he can follow, all of it give No Country for Old Men an unmatched substance.

Quentin Tarantino fans are getting excited as the first movie from the Oscar-winning director is set to arrive in IMAX in just a few months. Tarantino penned the script for the highly anticipated Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood sequel, The Adventures of Cliff Booth, starring Brad Pitt. Before the film is added to Netflix’s global streaming library around Christmas, it will have two weeks of IMAX exclusivity starting on November 25. Tarantino wrote the script for the film, but he opted not to direct, passing off directorial duties to David Fincher, who recently directed The Killer and Mank. Tarantino has been especially vocal not just in the last few years, but also his entire career, about the movies he likes and doesn’t like, and one of his most beloved trilogies has finally found a home on streaming.

One thing Quentin Tarantino has never been shy about sharing is his love of old Westerns, particularly those starring Clint Eastwood. Tarantino himself has also directed a few iconic Western classics, including Django Unchained and The Hateful Eight, but this pales in comparison to the dozens of Westerns Eastwood starred in over the years. Tarantino has repeatedly expressed his love for Eastwood’s Dollars trilogy, which kicked off in 1964 with A Fistful of Dollars. This was followed by For a Few Dollars More one year later, in 1965, and The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly the next year, in 1966. The first two movies in the trilogy are streaming for free on Pluto TV, but all three films are also available to watch on Prime Video. Tarantino has said repeatedly that he thinks the Dollars trilogy is “the only trilogy that truly works.”

Who Else Stars in Quentin Tarantino’s Next Movie?

Starring alongside Brad Pitt in the Tarantino-written and Fincher-directed Cliff Booth movie is Timothy Olyphant, who will reprise his role as James Stacy in the film. Carla Gugino, Elizabeth Debicki, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, and Holt McCallany have also been tapped for key roles in the film. Leonardo DiCaprio will not reprise his role as Rick Dalton in The Adventures of Cliff Booth. The Fox Sports broadcaster revealed that the sharp prongs securing the jewels on her dress repeatedly cut into her skin while she danced at the couple’s July 3 celebration inside Madison Square Garden. By the end of the evening, Thompson’s forearms were bleeding, and her boyfriend Steve Cundari’s expensive tuxedo had also sustained damage.

Thompson discussed the fashion disaster on Thursday’s episode of her “Calm Down” podcast with fellow sportscaster Erin Andrews, who also attended the wedding. The broadcaster wore a heavily embellished Valdrin Sahiti gown covered with individual gems. “The prongs were holding in all of the individual jewels,” Thompson recalled.

Although she loved the completed look, its weight and sharp hardware became increasingly uncomfortable as the night continued. “And the dress was super heavy and I loved the way it looked and everything. However, halfway through the night, I’m looking down and my forearms are bleeding. Bleeding,” she revealed.

The injuries apparently occurred while Thompson was dancing, as the repeated movement caused the sharp pieces of metal to rub against and cut her skin. She explained that the prongs were “slicing [her skin] open” throughout the celebration.

Gown Also Damaged Her Boyfriend’s Tuxedo

Thompson was not the only person affected by the elaborate dress. The jewels also repeatedly caught on Cundari’s tuxedo as the pair danced together. “Each prong would grab a little bit of his tuxedo,” Thompson explained. “You know when you get a run in [your] pantyhose? And that just pulls?”

The broadcaster joked that her entrepreneur boyfriend had been “excited about his tux,” making its condition by the end of the wedding particularly unfortunate. She acknowledged that she now owes him a replacement. “By the end of the night, I’m seeing these strings all over. My arms are bleeding. But it’s worth it!” Thompson said.

She described the damage as one of the “occupational hazards of getting on the dance floor in a dress that was not meant to get down like that [in].” Despite the discomfort, Thompson continued enjoying the reception rather than allowing the wardrobe problem to end her evening.

“Big Brother” Season 28 houseguest Kamu Kirk is facing calls for his removal after an old Instagram video resurfaced showing him joking about George Floyd while recording another person’s arrest. The 32-year-old MMA fighter filmed the December incident outside his residence as officers struggled to place an unidentified person into a police vehicle. When the individual repeatedly yelled that they could not breathe, Kirk invoked Floyd’s name while smiling and narrating the arrest. The clip has now fueled questions about how thoroughly CBS reviewed Kirk’s social media history before casting him on the reality competition.

Kirk, whose full name is Gabriel Xavier Kamuela Kirk, recorded the video while walking away from the scene. The face of the person being arrested was not shown, but they could be heard screaming, “I can’t breathe!” as officers attempted to get them inside a vehicle.

Kirk chuckled and noted that other bystanders appeared to be cheering on the arrest. “He’s saying, ‘I can’t breathe, I can’t breathe, I can’t breathe,’” Kirk narrated, before then making the comment that ignited the current backlash. “Bro thinks he’s George Floyd,” Kirk joked. “People are crazy, man. I’m going back inside.”

Before ending the recording, Kirk smiled and added, “I am gonna take that spot, though,” apparently referring to the parking space previously occupied by the person being arrested.

According to the Daily Mail, the video remained available through Kirk’s Instagram highlights as of Thursday night.

Floyd, a 46-year-old Black man, was murdered by Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin in May 2020. He repeatedly said that he could not breathe while Chauvin pressed his knee into Floyd’s neck for nearly 10 minutes during an arrest. Video of the killing sparked widespread protests against police brutality and racial injustice across the United States and around the world.

Chauvin and the other officers at the scene were fired the following day. Chauvin was later convicted of unintentional second-degree murder, third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter. He received a state prison sentence of 22-and-a-half years.

‘Big Brother’ Viewers Question CBS Casting Process

Fans quickly began demanding that producers remove Kirk from the competition. Some questioned whether CBS examined his public social media activity before selecting him for Season 28.

Others theorized that his controversial online presence may have made him more appealing to reality television producers seeking a cast member capable of generating conflict. “People shocked Kamu was cast for ‘Big Brother’ after his controversial IG posts. The casting team probably recruited him b/c of that!” one viewer speculated.

There is no evidence that producers selected Kirk because of the posts, and CBS has not explained what its background-checking process revealed before filming began.

The outrage surrounding the George Floyd video prompted viewers to search through Kirk’s other posts and interactions. Screenshots circulated that appeared to show Kirk liking content from users who identified themselves as Christian nationalists and advocated for the United States to become a Christian-ruled country. Other images seemingly showed him liking right-wing posts containing criticism of Islam and Muslims.

Social media likes can signal approval, but they do not necessarily provide complete context for someone’s personal beliefs. Kirk has not addressed the screenshots or explained why he interacted with the content.

Fans also resurfaced a photograph of the U.S. Capitol from Kirk’s Instagram highlights. “Who’s storming with me?” Kirk captioned the image.

Several viewers interpreted the post as expressing support for the pro-Trump attack on the Capitol on January 6, 2021. However, the supplied material did not indicate when Kirk posted the photograph or provide additional context establishing what he intended by the caption.

Frankie Grande Demands Kirk’s Removal

Frankie Grande, who previously competed on “Big Brother,” became one of the most prominent voices demanding action. The openly gay singer and actor initially condemned Kirk over a separate conversation inside the house that he believed was homophobic.

“Um. What the f-ck is this horses?! Get these homophobic bigots out of the fing house IMMEDIATELY. Both of them,” Grande wrote on X. “Ew this conversation makes me sick to my stomach. I’m disgusted. This better be the biggest thing ever when I wake up tomorrow or I’m flipping a table… f-ck. Ew. Gross.”

Grande later reposted the resurfaced George Floyd clip and renewed his call for Kirk to be removed. “You guys. Enough. How is this monster still in the house. WHAT THE F-CK?!” he wrote.

As of now, CBS had not announced plans to discipline or remove Kirk from the “Big Brother” house.

Filming on season 3 of Taylor Sheridan‘s Landman is expected to start soon — but there has been a delay.

James Jordan recently spoke exclusively to Us at the Lioness premiere about reuniting with Sheridan on Landman, saying, “It’s going to be fantastic. Taylor is writing as we speak. It’s going to be 10 crazy, wonderful, funny and wild episodes — just like season 1 and season 2 have been. Billy Bob and everybody, we’re all ready to get back to work.”

The actor, who plays Dale, hinted at a shakeup.

“I believe we’re bringing back the same director, Stephen Kay, who I adore. So it’s going to be a great ride,” Jordan noted. “We start that sometime in September and we’ll shoot that through the first quarter of next year.”

He continued: “Then we should have it out … I don’t know when. It’s up to the powers that be, but we’re very excited to get started on that.”

Based on the “Boomtown” podcast, Landman joins the ranks of Sheridan’s hits including Yellowstone, Mayor of Kingstown, Tulsa King, Lawmen: Bass Reeves and more. The Paramount+ series, which premiered in 2024, introduced Billy Bob Thornton as a corporate fixer working for an oil titan in a West Texas-set drama with life-and-death stakes.

Landman was expected to go back into production in August. According to Jordan, the entire cast is expected back.

“No, I would not be concerned [about my future on the show],” he added. “I don’t know everything, but I would not be concerned.”

Jordan teased how thrilled the cast was to start working on season 3 soon, adding, “Everybody’s very excited to get back to work. It’s going to be a great time. We’re pumped to get back to the Fort Worth area and shoot season 3.”

Despite the delay, Jordan got a surprise from Sheridan.
