Doping blow: Deepanshu suspended, out of Asian Games | More sports News
NEW DELHI: Indian wrestling has suffered a doping setback ahead of the Asian Games, with Greco-Roman wrestler Deepanshu provisionally suspended by the National AntiDoping Agency (NADA) after failing an out-of-competition dope test for the prohibited anabolic steroid stanozolol.Deepanshu, who competes in the 130kg category, had won the Asian Games selection trials in Lucknow and was part of the country’s squad for the continental showpiece. However, his positive test has resulted in his removal from the national camp and squad.Ronak Dahiya, who had lost to Deepanshu in the trials and was named as reserve, has now been drafted into the 130kg category.It has been learnt that Deepanshu’s sample was collected by dope control officers at the Lucknow camp. The sample was subsequently tested at the National Dope Testing Laboratory (NDTL), where it returned positive for stanozolol.The latest doping case is particularly serious as it is Deepanshu’s second offence. He had earlier served a threeyear ban for a doping violation involving the same prohibited substance.He returned to competition in 2025 and subsequently earned a place in the national camp. As a repeat offender, Deepanshu faces a potentially lengthy ban of up to eight years, which could put his career in jeopardy.His suspension has left Indian wrestling to deal with an embarrassing doping blow during a crucial phase of its preparations for the Games.Meanwhile, Ronak has begun training alongside the main Games squad and will travel to Uzbekistan along with other members of the Greco-Roman contingent for training-cum-exposure trip.The fresh doping setback comes on the heels of disciplinary action against Indian weightlifters selected for the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. Three of the four lifters who tested positive for prohibited substances ahead of the Games have admitted their violations and accepted bans ranging from three to four years. Their suspensions have also extinguished their Asian Games hopes.
LOS ANGELES — Tarik Skubal yielded three runs on four hits while pitching five innings in the back-to-back Cy Young Award winner’s home debut for the Los Angeles Dodgers against Kansas City on Monday night.
Skubal left with the Dodgers trailing 3-2 after a decent, if unspectacular, first start in the home whites. Although he struck out six, Skubal didn’t live up to manager Dave Roberts’ pregame prediction of “an electric night” for the vaunted left-hander and his slumping club, which lost eight of nine heading into this homestand.
The Dodgers did rally to win the game 6-5, scoring three runs in the bottom of the sixth and the winning run in the bottom of the seventh.
Skubal needed 95 pitches and managed just one 1-2-3 inning against the Royals, with Jac Caglianone tagging him for a two-run homer and an RBI single. Skubal also issued two walks and hit a batter in just his second career appearance at Dodger Stadium, taking the mound nine days after the defending champions acquired him from Detroit in the biggest trade of the deadline.
Los Angeles gave up three promising prospects for what might be a short-term rental of the 29-year-old Skubal, who will reap the benefits of unrestricted free agency this winter.
Skubal made his Dodgers debut at Wrigley Field last Tuesday, pitching six innings of two-run, four-hit ball with six strikeouts in his new team’s 5-1 loss to the Chicago Cubs.
The back-to-back World Series champions had the prospects and the impetus to get out and get the back-to-back Cy Young Award winner — and Skubal’s reception at Chavez Ravine showed their fans still don’t take their deep-pocketed team’s winning mentality for granted.
When Skubal was announced in the starting lineup, Dodgers fans responded with loud cheers and a serenade of “Skuuuuuu!”
“I think with great players, there’s very few things that are new to them, that get the nerviness or excitement, or whatever you want to call it, in them,” Roberts said. “And I think that making his first appearance in a home jersey at Dodger Stadium is doing that to Tarik. I think he’s very excited about tonight, and I think that energy is going to be translated into the stands, in the dugout. There’s kind of a buzz in the clubhouse.”
But after that warm pregame reception, Skubal yielded two soft singles and a run to Kansas City’s first three batters, with Bobby Witt Jr. stealing second and scoring on Caglianone’s dribbler up the middle.
Nick Loftin then doubled in the third before Caglianone hit his 21st homer of the season to right, smashing a hanging slider for a 410-foot shot that induced grumbles from the stands.
Skubal retired six straight Royals after Caglianone’s shot, but he got into trouble again in the fifth, hitting Loftin and walking Witt with two outs. Skubal dug in and struck out Caglianone to end it, getting him with his signature changeup on his final pitch.
The Dodgers probably hoped for a more dominant beginning to Skubal’s career in blue, but they care most about the games he’ll pitch in October, when the champs expect to make their 14th consecutive playoff appearance.
Roberts is uncommonly impressed by his new left-hander after just over a week together.
“This guy, he’s as different as anyone I’ve ever been around in this short period of time,” Roberts said. “He’s special in every way. … He’s just built differently. The mind, the body, the focus, the humility, the willingness to serve, to help. He puts himself out there. He’s different than any player I’ve ever been around, really. Again, it’s a small sample, but I’ve dug in on him. I got a pretty good gut. This guy is something like I’ve never seen.”
The start was Skubal’s 18th of the season and just his 11th since he missed a month and a half following elbow surgery, theoretically leaving him fresher for the challenges ahead in the pennant race.
The Dodgers’ injury-plagued rotation gets more help Tuesday when two-time Cy Young winner Blake Snell comes off the shelf to make only his second start of the season.

Tommy John, the former New York Yankees pitcher who first underwent the elbow surgery that has been used to further the careers of players for decades, released a statement to fans as the franchise celebrated Old-Timers’ Day on Saturday.
John, 83, said in his message he was “saying goodbye” as the team revealed he’s been battling health issues in Florida.

John had his famed surgery in 1974 and became a success story as he went on to win more than 160 games after the operation was completed. He missed the entire 1975 season and was a three-time All-Star after the surgery.
He finished his career as a four-time All-Star and played eight of his 26 seasons with the Yankees.
He also played for the Chicago White Sox, Los Angeles Dodgers, California Angels, Cleveland Indians and Oakland Athletics.

He had a career 3.34 ERA with 2,245 strikeouts.
“The day I left for my first job as a pitcher, my father looked at me & said, ‘Good luck, Tommy. Just remember one thing: whether you make it big in the big leagues or you don’t, you’ll always just be Tommy John from Terre Haute, Indiana,’” his message added.

Don Nelson, a former NBA player and head coach who is in the Basketball Hall of Fame, has died, his family announced on Sunday. He was 86.
Nelson played in the NBA from 1963 to 1976 and was a head coach in the league from 1977 to 2010.

“On Sunday morning our beloved husband, dad, grandfather and great-grandfather Don Nelson peacefully went to be with the Lord, surrounded by his loving family,” his family said in a statement, via NBA writer Marc Stein. “Throughout his last week, friends and family encircled him with love, sharing the blessing of his friendship and revisiting treasured memories.”
Nelson was a standout basketball player at Iowa before he was chosen in the third round of the 1962 NBA Draft by the Chicago Zephyrs. He played one season with the Zephyrs before moving on to the Los Angeles Lakers and later the Boston Celtics.
He spent more of his 14-year career with the Celtics. In 11 years with Boston, he was a member of five NBA championship teams. He averaged 11.4 points and 5.2 rebounds per game in 872 games with Boston.

Nelson went into coaching a year after he retired. He spent the 1976-77 season as an assistant coach with the Milwaukee Bucks before he was promoted to head coach in the 1976-77 season, replacing Larry Costello, who was let go after 18 games.
He coached the Bucks until 1987. He then coached the Golden State Warriors in two separate stints, the Dallas Mavericks and 59 games for the New York Knicks. He was awarded the NBA Coach of the Year three times and appeared on two lists of the greatest coaches in NBA history.
Nelson was 1,335-1,063 as a head coach. He won 540 games as a head coach of the Bucks.

Twins right-hander Dean Kremer (2-4) beat his former team, which dealt him to the Twins before the trade deadline. Kremer limited the Orioles to one run on one hit in seven innings. He walked one and struck out seven.
Orioles left-hander Trevor Rogers (7-8) allowed two runs on four hits in four innings. He walked two and fanned four.
The Twins opened the scoring in the bottom of the third. Martin belted a leadoff shot over the wall in left-center field for his third homer.
Baltimore pulled even at 1-all on an unusual play in the top of the fourth. Gunnar Henderson and Jackson Holliday attempted a double steal with Tyler O’Neill at the plate. O’Neill struck out and Twins catcher Jeffers threw to second, but Holliday avoided the tag for a long enough time that Henderson was able to score.
Kaelen Culpepper put the Twins on top 2-1 with a sacrifice fly in the fourth. Minnesota broke the game open with five runs in the seventh.
Jeffers started the high-scoring inning when he stepped to the plate with runners on second and third with nobody out, and he delivered a two-run single to left to make it 4-1. Two batters later, Bell had runners on first and second, and he ripped a three-run homer to center to make it 7-1.
The Orioles got two runs back in the top of the eighth to pull within 7-3. Mayo hit an RBI double to left, and Christian Encarnacion-Strand had an RBI groundout to third.
Jeffers added an RBI double to center in the eighth, and Royce Lewis followed with an RBI single to increase the Twins’ lead to 9-3. Mayo ripped a two-run single in the ninth to finish the scoring.

Atlanta Braves starter Chris Sale was ejected on Sunday afternoon at Yankee Stadium, and he wasn’t even scheduled to pitch.
Before the game even started, Sale was still fuming about a balk call on Saturday night against the New York Yankees that he decided to unload on the umpire who called him for it.
As umpires took the field for the series finale between the Braves and Yankees in the Bronx, Sale started to yell toward umpire Dan Merzel before Yankees starter Cam Schlittler threw an official pitch.

Merzel clearly didn’t like what he was hearing, and who can blame him after the ordeal occurred the night before. Merzel quickly ejected Sale, but the veteran left-hander continued to get his money’s worth as he shouted something toward crew chief Dan Bellino.
Sale rarely balks. In fact, he did it only twice prior to Saturday night for his entire career.

But Merzel called him for that third career balk in the fifth inning on Saturday night, which allowed Yankees rookie Spencer Jones to score after hitting an RBI triple the at-bat prior.
In the end, the run proved costly with the Yankees picking up the victory, 5-4. Braves manager Walt Weiss was tossed from the game, but he likely did so because Sale was barking at Merzel and he stepped in between to continue the argument.

After the game, Bellino said to a pool reporter that Sale was called for the balk after not declaring he was going to be pitching from the windup. He said Sale was pitching from the windup when he struck out José Caballero, but he didn’t do so before facing Austin Wells.
Sale’s night in the Bronx ended with three runs allowed on five hits across six innings in what was his first loss since late June. He has enjoyed quite the season with the NLEast-leading Braves, owning a 2.20 ERA across 21 starts.

The Braves managed to salvage the series on Sunday, as they defeated the Yankees, 2-1, in extra innings. But Sale couldn’t watch it from the dugout all game long after being tossed.

NEW DELHI: Eighteen years after scripting history at the Beijing Olympics, Indian shooting legend Abhinav Bindra looked back on the moment that changed Indian sport forever, describing his individual gold medal as the “biggest peak of my sporting life”.On August 11, 2008, Bindra became the first Indian to win an individual Olympic gold medal when he triumphed in the men’s 10m air rifle event with a score of 700.5.Marking the 18th anniversary of his historic achievement, Bindra reflected on the significance of that day in a post on X.“18 years ago today, I reached the biggest peak of my sporting life. Life since has taught me that the spaces between the peaks matter just as much,” Bindra wrote.
A historic gold that changed Indian sport
Bindra’s triumph ended India’s long wait for an individual Olympic gold and established him as one of the country’s greatest sporting icons. His feat was matched only when javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra won India’s second individual Olympic gold at the Tokyo Games in 2021.Bindra went on to compete at two more Olympics, finishing 16th at London 2012 and fourth at Rio 2016. But the Beijing triumph remained the defining moment of his career.The shooter also enjoyed an illustrious record beyond the Olympics. He won seven Commonwealth Games medals, including four golds, and three Asian Games medals, including a silver. He was also crowned world champion in the 10m air rifle in 2006.Across a career spanning more than two decades, Bindra won over 150 individual medals.His contribution to shooting was also recognised internationally when he received the ISSF’s Blue Cross in 2018, the organisation’s highest honour.Since retiring, Bindra has continued to contribute to Indian sport through the Abhinav Bindra Foundation Trust, which works with grassroots athletes and focuses on high-performance training, sports science and education.He also served as vice-chair of the IOC Athletes Commission before completing his tenure earlier this year. During his time with the IOC, Bindra became the first Indian to receive the Olympic Order for his contribution to the Olympic movement.

With Ty France aboard after a one-out single that snapped Logan Henderson’s string of 13 straight hitters retired, Merrill crushed a 1-1 changeup an estimated 431 feet to center for his 19th homer. It was his ninth homer since the All-Star break, tied for most in the majors with Atlanta’s Matt Olson of Atlanta and Boston’s Wilyer Abreu.
Yuki Matsui (3-1) pitched a 1-2-3 seventh to garner the win and Adrian Morejon induced a double-play ball from Jake Bauers to end the eighth. Mason Miller worked the ninth for his 30th save in 31 chances as San Diego won for the fourth time in five games.
Henderson (6-2) pitched a career-high 6 1/3 innings, yielding five hits and three runs while walking one and striking out seven. San Diego starter Casey Mize permitted five hits and two runs over six innings, issuing two walks and whiffing six.
Mize, who was hammered for eight runs in his first Padres start, a 10-4 loss in Arizona last Wednesday, looked much better. His only mistake was a first-pitch fastball in the second that Christian Yelich ambushed, driving it into the seats in left for his eighth homer after William Contreras walked.
San Diego got a run back in its half of the second when Ty France led off and lined a changeup over the left field wall for his 17th homer. The Padres angled to tie the score in the third when Freddy Fermin led off with a double and reached third on Sung-Mun Song’s sacrifice bunt.
But Henderson induced a groundout from Fernando Tatis Jr. and fanned Jake Cronenworth to end the threat. He didn’t have to pitch from the stretch again until facing Merrill in the game’s most critical at-bat.
Milwaukee managed a two-out baserunner in the ninth when Contreras drew a walk but pinch runner Brandon Lockridge was nailed trying to steal second.

US President Donald Trump on Monday backed FIFA president Gianni Infantino, who is in hot water over allegations of a workplace affair and criticism of a failed private investment scheme.
“FIFA would be making a terrible mistake if, for any reason, they even considered replacing President Gianni Infantino,” Trump said in a Truth Social post, calling the Italian-Swiss lawyer “fantastic” and saying he “presided over the most successful World Cup, by four times, ever presented.”

“If he is gone, it will never be as successful or profitable again!”
Trump’s backing of Infantino contrasts with the response of US Soccer, which issued a statement critiquing the FIFA leader alongside Canada Soccer and football organizations in Central America and the Caribbean.
Infantino, who faces reelection next March, has denied allegations of wrongdoing, and FIFA for their part has backed its beseiged president, calling the backlash “a concerted and ongoing effort by some to undermine” the organization.
Other football organizations, including the Confederation of African Football and South American governing body CONMEBOL, share Trump’s position in supporting Infantino.

WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Junior Caminero hit a three-run homer in an eight-run eighth inning as the Tampa Bay Rays rallied for a 10-6 victory over the Athletics on Monday night.
Caminero hit his 34th of the year after Yandy Díaz and Jonathan Aranda both singled to kick off the inning, bringing the Rays within one. Chandler Simpson’s RBI single tied the game, and Taylor Walls hit a two-run single to give Tampa Bay an 8-6 lead. Díaz hit a sacrifice fly and Aranda hit an RBI single in his second at-bat of the inning to make it 10-6.
Rays reliever Chris Roycroft (1-0) pitched the seventh inning, giving up three hits and three earned runs. Starter Freddy Peralta pitched the first six innings, with five strikeouts, three earned runs and a walk.
Díaz homered on the second pitch of the game to make it 1-0. The A’s responded with an RBI double by Tyler Soderstrom to tie it, followed by Soderstrom stealing home later in the inning to make it 2-1.
Zack Gelof hit a solo home run in the fifth inning for the Athletics in his first game back after being on the injured list with a right knee laceration he sustained against the Detroit Tigers on July 9. He hit an RBI double in the seventh inning.
Jeff McNeil hit a sacrifice fly and Jacob Wilson doubled in the seventh to give the A’s a 6-2 lead.
Jose Suarez (1-4) gave up four runs while getting just one out in the eighth, after Seth Johnson was charged with four runs and failed to record an out. Jacob Lopez pitched the first seven innings, allowing two runs with five strikeouts and a walk.
RHP Nick Martinez (11-3, 2.65 ERA) will start on the mound for the Rays on Tuesday for the second game of the series. RHP Mason Barnett (1-2, 5.56) will start for the Athletics.
