First the fires, now prepare for floods as torrential rain and thunder forecast for many areas of parched Britain

Forget the sunscreen, now brollies and waterproofs might come in handy.

After five successive heatwaves brought devastating wildfires and drought conditions, the arrival of widespread rain could come as a much-needed relief.

But as torrential thundery showers make their way south across the country, drenching all but south-eastern areas, forecasters warn there could be flash flooding – because the ground is too hard to soak up the water.

The worst weather is forecast for Thursday, when heavy and thundery downpours are set to move south from Scotland.

Mike Silverstone, the Met Office’s deputy chief forecaster, warned: ‘As some of these showers could be intense, there is a chance of some surface water flooding as the rain falls on very dry and hard ground.’

He added: ‘While some of these will be heavy, some areas will miss them altogether.’

London and South East England, in particular, are likely to stay dry and sunny.

Temperatures over the coming days are due to reach highs in the low 20s Celsius (70s Fahrenheit) in southern England and Wales but only the high teens (60s F) in northern areas – more typical for a British summer.

Thundery showers are likely to continue into Friday before a fine and dry Saturday.

Widespread rain first arrived late yesterday, spreading south-eastwards, followed by further showers today, particularly in northern areas.

Patchy drizzle is due to clear from the south east tomorrow morning followed by a return of sunshine in many areas.

Mr Silverstone said: ‘Many areas in England and Wales are desperate for rain, this week some of these areas will see the first meaningful rain for a long time.’

The prospect of further hot weather is not over yet, though – with ‘warm, humid spells’ possible through the rest of August and even another heatwave in September.

‘Largely dry and settled’ weather is likely over the weekend and into the first half of next week, although showers are possible in the far southeast and temperatures are not likely to rise above the 20s.

Unsettled conditions with ‘rain or showers’ and strengthening winds are predicted towards the Bank Holiday weekend.

But the Met Office has raised the spectre of a sixth heatwave before the autumn equinox – saying the first half of September could see ‘late season hot spells or heatwaves develop, especially in the south’.

The scorching conditions which have dominated Britain’s weather since May have seen drought conditions declared in two-thirds of England and all of Wales, turning parched fields yellow and draining reservoirs and water reserves.

More than 27 million people are now subject to restrictions on water use. Wessex Water was the latest company to bring in a hosepipe ban from today.

Last week saw the hottest day of the year with temperatures peaking at 38.1C (100.6F) on Thursday – close to the all-time record of 40.3C (104.5F) recorded in 2022 – sparking devastating wildfires including one which destroyed 19 homes in Stourbridge, West Midlands.

Tinder dry conditions have seen large blazes break out in countryside from the Peak District to the New Forest, South Wales and Suffolk – and resulted in the government issuing the first ever national emergency alert for wildfires to mobile phones last Friday.

July was the driest in England and Wales since records began 190 years ago and some areas recorded no rain for nearly two months, including Wisley, Surrey.

The couple have also featured each other on their social media pages in recent months amid their romance.

And last month in July, Hamilton made a rare comment about his relationship with The Kardashians star.

While at the Silverstone Circuit racing venue in England, a fan said: ‘You’ve been a happier man recently, why’s that? Could that be a girlfriend?’

Hamilton replied: ‘Yeah, that’s a good one!’ before later adding: ‘Of course, of course, it’s Kim.’

Marcus Rashford sends blunt message to Gary Neville after Man Utd return | Football

Marcus Rashford has sent a message to Manchester United legend Gary Neville after his return to his boyhood club.

Rashford’s time in Manchester appeared to be up when he joined Barcelona on loan last summer, a deal that was expected to be made permanent in a £26million deal.

The 28-year-old had made no bones about his desire to extend his stay at the club, but the Catalan giants instead decided to pursue a deal for Newcastle United winger Anthony Gordon.

And while an exit from Old Trafford still seemed the likely outcome earlier in the summer, a lack of serious suitors prepared to meet United’s £40m asking price means the Englishman has now rejoined Michael Carrick’s squad.

Rashford came off the bench for a brief cameo against AC Milan last weekend, and could be in line to feature in United’s first Premier League encounter against Hull City on Saturday.

In a trailer for an upcoming episode of Stick To Football, Neville was already keen to discuss the 28-year-old, but was quickly shut down by fellow Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher.

‘Marcus Rashford, what do we think? Last question,’ Neville said before Carragher quickly interjected: ‘Oh f*****g hell, can we do a podcast without mentioning Rashford? Stop it! Oh my god.

‘It’s like the Trent and Rashford – there was like a little part of the podcast – the Trent part or the Rashford part. He’s just a good player for Man United!’

And responding to the video on X, Rashford made it clear he would appreciate Neville and others giving him some time to settle into the season back at United.

‘Thanks, Jamie. It would be great to be able to get my head down and play football without my name being mentioned every day,’ he wrote.

Rashford has only been back with Carrick’s squad for a short period, but the United head coach said he was already impressed by what he has seen in training.

‘He’s a very good player, and I think if you’re going to have a career over 10 or 15 years, there’s going to be times when things go in a direction and maybe a different direction,’ Carrick recently said.

‘I think there are ups and downs, and that doesn’t judge you as a one-off kind of judgment. It’s what happens over time, and now we’re in a positive place as a group, and Marcus can offer us so much.

‘He has done, and he can do again, so in that respect, it’s quite exciting.

‘He came in, he’s trained really well. I’ve known him a long time, like I’ve known some of the others a long time, so I don’t treat him any different to anybody else, but it’s been good to have him around the group again this week. So I’m really positive with that.’

Elsewhere, former Red Devils captain Wayne Rooney believes Rashford must show the right ‘hunger’ to get his United career back on track.

Speaking on Stick To United, Rooney said: ‘For me, has he got the hunger, does he want to play for Manchester United? You have to rebuild the relationship with the fans and the easiest way to do that is work hard and work on your body language.

‘You could have a bad game, you could give the ball away and make mistakes, but if the fans see you working hard and putting in a shift for the team, they’ll accept that to a certain point.

‘I think Marcus’ body language, even when he came on, it isn’t great. He might have to work with someone to make his body language look better.

“I think his work rate has to improve. If he wants to be at the football club, he just has to knuckle down. He’s the one player that could go and get my goalscoring record.’

Missing British gold medal-winning sprinter is found in Moroccan prison after ‘sexually assaulting a minor’

Published

Leon Baptiste, 41, (pictured winning England Athletics Coach of the Year in 2023) has been jailed in Morocco amid allegations he sexually assaulted a minor

A British gold medal-winning sprinter who won two medals at the Commonwealth Games has been jailed for ten months amid allegations he sexually assaulted a minor.

Leon Baptiste, 41, was thought to be missing as of yesterday after going on a trip to Morocco two months ago.

UK Athletics, where he worked as a consultant sprinting coach, did not know why Baptiste was out of contact – nor did those he worked with.

The coach, who was training top athletes ahead of the upcoming Commonwealth Games, told a group of them that he would be absent ‘for a while’, the BBC reported.

No further explanation was given to those he coached after that message in May of this year.

A brief email, sent on behalf of the sprinter, who won the 200m at the 2010 Commonwealth Games, was sent on Tuesday.

In the correspondence to the athletes he coached, it was announced that Baptiste had resigned, laying blame on unspecified ill health.

It has since emerged the athlete had been arrested in Marrakech last May, a source from the Moroccan Ministry of Justice told the broadcaster.

As of yesterday, the 41-year-old (pictured in 2010) was thought to be missing after going on a trip to Morocco two months ago

He was later convicted and is now behind bars in Al-Oudaya prison, the insider added, saying the reports of him being missing were ‘inaccurate’.

They added the former athlete was ‘not subject to any disappearance or unexplained absence’, and was in good health.

‘He is currently being held at the local prison in Marrakech, where he is serving a custodial sentence following his conviction by the competent judicial authorities in connection with a misdemeanour case,’ they said.

Morocco’s Public Prosecution Office confirmed his sentencing as well as the crime for which he was convicted to the broadcaster.

A spokesman said a British national is serving a prison sentence in a local Marrakech prison after a court judgment against him.

Baptiste had been in the North African country alongside three other ex-British athletes, all of whom have returned to British soil, a source said.

It is understood the athlete’s family are aware of Baptiste’s custodial sentence.

Many top British sprinters, such as Olympic bronze medallist Charlie Dobson and Zac Shaw, who won silver in the Paralympics, have been left without a coach.

Relay coach Martyn Rooney and European gold medallist Adam Gemili are said to have stepped up to aid sportspeople who have been affected by the former sprinter’s sudden departure.

A Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office spokesman said: ‘We are supporting a British national who is detained in Morocco and are in contact with the authorities.’

The Daily Mail has approached UK Athletics for comment.

Canada and US say they are finalising a trade deal, but details remain murky

Published

on

An image showing US trade representative Jamieson Greer (right) shaking hands with Canada-US trade minister Dominic LeBlanc to his left. Behind them are a US and Canada flag with the seal for the US trade representative in the middle. Both men are wearing suits and smiling at the camera.

The US, meanwhile, has been asking for a number of concessions from Canada, including removing its remaining retaliatory tariffs on American autos and adjusting its dairy quotas to allow greater access for US cheese producers.

It has also asked for the ban on US alcohol sales, imposed last year by most Canadian provinces in retaliation to Trump’s tariffs, be removed.

Asked on Wednesday if the latest deal will include significant concessions on dairy, Minister LeBlanc said that Canada’s dairy supply management programme – which sees production quotas, set pricing, and import quotas on dairy, eggs, and poultry – will remain “entirely intact”.

Polls suggest that a majority of Canadians would be unhappy if the Carney government made significant concessions to the US, with 56% surveyed by polling firm Leger, external saying they want Canada to take a hardline approach.

But business organisations from both sides of the border have urged for a deal to be reached, cautioning that additional tariffs between the two major trading partners would be harmful for both countries.

Dennis Darby, president of Canadian Manufacturers and Exporters and a member of Carney’s advisory committee on Canada-US trade, told the BBC that he is optimistic a finalised deal is on the horizon.

“The committee was informed this morning that the negotiations continue and that and we’re close, and that’s more positive than we’ve seen in some time,” Darby said.

He added that businesses hope this will be the first step towards a return to the terms set under the North American free trade agreement, known as USMCA, with most goods flowing tariff-free through Canada, the US and Mexico.

“Let’s hope that whatever they have to negotiate gets us closer to that,” he said.

Where is Professor T season 4 filmed? Locations for the Cambridge-based drama

Published

on

Cambridgeshire Live

The crime drama is set in Cambridge, but doesn’t always film there

Professor T is back for season four, two years after the last series aired in the UK.

Death in Paradise star Ben Miller will return to his role as Jasper Tempest in the ITV favourite when it makes its comeback on Wednesday, August 19.

The new series will pick up from season three’s heartbreaking cliffhanger, which saw DS Lisa Donckers tragically struck in a hit and run.

Speaking about where his character is at the start of season four, Ben said: “He’s almost gone back to square one in terms of his OCD. We’ve previously seen him trying to take the gloves off, literally and metaphorically, but he ended up pulling them back on after Lisa’s death.

“For whatever reason, he didn’t comfort her as she was dying. The darker side of his nature took over, and he’s carrying a lot of guilt from letting her die like that. He wanted to change before, but he’s really determined to change now. He can’t let that happen again.”

The crime drama is based on a Belgian series and is very much an Anglo-Belgian production, with lots of filming taking place in Belgium.

For season four, nearly all of the college interiors were filmed at a former international boarding school for girls, now known as The Winter Garden of the Ursulines.

Meanwhile, the Château de La Hulpe doubled as the interior of Jasper’s office, while the lecture theatre was filmed at the academiezaal Sint Truiden.

Speaking about working with the crew in Belgium, Barney White, who plays Dan, said: “We film in Belgium and so we do spend a lot of time together as we’re not going home every night.

“Ben and I have particularly spent a lot of time together, as we’re now on our fifth series. The show’s become a real fixture in our lives.

“Working with Ben is such a pleasure: he’s so focused and brings brilliant ideas and energy, and we know each other very well now.

“The rest of the cast has changed a lot but Ben and I have been here from the start, and we particularly bonded at the beginning as it was filmed in lockdown. We have this thing where we all go to the same restaurants, and they all know Ben’s order, which is Belgian fries, basically!”

Swimmers told to keep out of London’s first bathing site on the Thames – after it’s been polluted by toxic algae

Published

Swimmers have been urged to stay away from London‘s first official bathing site on the Thames because it is polluted with toxic algae.

The Environment Agency has also warned locals against going into water along a broader stretch of the river, which is also likely to have been struck by the algae.

The regulator, which is also responsible for flood and waste management, stressed it was ‘vitally important’ to keep dogs away from the water.

It comes as the Ham and Kingston bathing site opened in Kingston upon Thames last May, becoming the first designated bathing water on the Thames in London.

And as it opened its doors alongside a tranche of new sites for open water swimming, it became subject to regular water tests until the end of September.

However, the agency has now warned swimmers against bathing at the site due to the presence of blue-green algae, which has toxins harmful to humans and animals.

Blue-green algae, or cyanobacteria, blooms when warm temperatures, low rainfall and calmer water conditions create the ideal growing conditions for it, officials said.

They produce toxins that can kill wild animals, farm animals and pets, and can also harm people, causing skin rashes and illness if swallowed.

The body said that during drought and prolonged dry weather, it has reported increasing numbers of algal blooms, fish deaths and deteriorating water quality.

An Environment Agency spokesman said: ‘We have identified blue-green algae on the lower River Thames including the Ham and Kingston designated bathing water.

‘We are working with the Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames, who have put signage in this location to warn people that it is not safe to swim.

‘An advice against bathing notice has been activated on the Swiminfo website.’

The spokesman also warned that it was likely the section of the River Thames between Hampton and Kingston had also been affected.

‘It is important that members of the public do not enter the Thames along this stretch. It is also vitally important to keep dogs out of the water,’ they urged.

The Environment Agency is taking water samples along the stretch of river to confirm the extent of the algal bloom.

The UK Health Security Agency and abstractors have been notified, the regulator added.

Son of Britain’s ‘most evil mum’ reveals he was scarred for life after being ‘forced to undergo unnecessary surgeries as a child’ as part of her lying money-making scheme

Published

on

Lisa Hayden-Johnson, 52, of Brixham, Devon, pretended her son Matthew needed a wheelchair.

The son of a woman branded Britain’s ‘most evil mum’ has revealed he still bears physical scars from the unnecessary surgeries he was forced to undergo as a child.

From the age of four, Matthew was forced into a wheelchair by his mother Lisa Hayden-Johnson and ‘treated’ for illnesses including cystic fibrosis, cerebral palsy, diabetes and food allergies.

Yet years later it emerged Hayden-Johnson, now 52, had made up the illnesses in a bid to gain publicity and make money as the mother of ‘Britain’s sickest boy’.

As part of the fabrication, the mother-of-two from Brixham in Devon connected Matthew up to an oxygen tank and met Queen Camilla, Sir Tony Blair and Simon Cowell.

Her deception, however, toppled over when health workers and school staff raised concerns with police – leading to her being imprisoned for more than three years in 2010.

Now, Matthew has described he still carries the physical scars of operations he was forced to undergo as a child on the recommendation of his mother.

‘[Putting] in the feeding tube was a surgery I had to go through under general anaesthetic,’ Matthew, now 25, described.

‘I had to have surgery for that to be implemented and I still have scars today from it because they needed to obviously remove it.’

This comes as a new Channel 4 documentary called Love You To Death, which follows Matthew’s ordeal of more than six years, airs at 9pm on Wednesday night.

Speaking to ITV’s This Morning, Matthew raised questions over why his mother’s fabrication slipped past doctors for years.

‘I think with medical professionals there is a lot of confusion as to why things weren’t picked up quicker,’ he said.

‘Because I went through quite a lot of surgeries for example and [operated on] without clear signs of the need to operate.’

I know why Jack the Ripper was protected for so long

Hi, I’m Alex Matthews, Editor of The Crime Desk.

Despite enduring six and a half years of unnecessary medical treatment, Matthew said he doesn’t harbour anger towards what he went through – but feels his treatment could have been picked up on sooner.

‘I think there is a lot of disappointment in the time [it took to uncover what was going on],’ he said.

‘I understand that maybe the technology wasn’t there, but I also believe it could have been picked up a lot sooner, than what it had been.’

Matthew ‘cut ties’ with Hayden-Johnson ‘a couple of years ago’, adding: ‘There was a large period of time when [he] did have a relationship with [his] mum.’

Relations, however, were severed between the mother and son after Matthew saw how his sister Laura was treated by their mother.

Meanwhile, Matthew claims Hayden-Johnson failed to take accountability over what she had done.

‘You will see in the documentary that she doesn’t take almost any accountability for her actions,’ Matthew said.

‘And she mentions rekindling the relationship but it’s very sort of on our terms. It’s a difficult decision to stick by every day and people may think blood’s thicker than water.

‘But it is only me who can make that decision and stick with it every day.’

While concerns were raised by relatives, Matthew described how one medical machine used to measure glucose levels uncovered Hayden-Johnson’s deception.

‘They had a machine that they told her was faulty and that she needed a new one,’ he said.

‘They sent her a new machine but they had planted something in it where they could track the readings. And there were numerous readings coming back to say that she had retested and retested.’

He continued: ‘The reading that showed the illness was the one that she’d used rather than the ones that were perhaps true.

‘So [it showed] the manipulation of the machines.’

The documentary also hears from Hayden-Johnson herself and Matthew’s sister Laura, now 27, as well as doctors, police and relatives about how Matthew was subjected to lengthy and enduring cruelty.

During which, the mother claimed she was ‘only guilty of putting [her] son first’.

In the trailer, Hayden-Johnson says of Matthew’s birth: ‘I always wanted to be a mum. He was such a happy baby. It was the most amazing thing.’

Hayden-Johnson then adds: ‘I’ll answer everything that you can possibly throw at me. The only thing I was guilty of was putting my son first, and I don’t regret that.’

Laura – who has complex PTSD because of nightmares featuring Matthew’s cries as his feeding tubes are changed – tells the programme: ‘I can still hear him screaming.’

During the pretence, Hayden-Johnson received free tickets to ITV’s The X Factor, thousands in cash donations and benefits, went on free cruises and lobbied for Matthew to receive a national GMTV bravery award.

But she was organising a regime of medical, physiological and psychological mistreatment – amounting to round-the-clock torture for the boy.

Hayden-Johnson frequently described Matthew as ‘the most ill child in Britain’ – and he became convinced he was chronically ill.

She subjected him to 325 medical encounters – including inserting a feeding tube into his stomach under general anaesthetic. He had a total of nine GAs.

Hayden-Johnson also claimed Matthew suffered from illnesses such as diabetes, food allergies, cerebral palsy, cystic fibrosis and an intolerance to sunlight.

After being examined by medics in Devon, Bristol and London, she then forced Matthew to go to school in a wheelchair – even though he could run around with his friends.

Hayden-Johnson also made him wear sunglasses to protect his eyes and a bright yellow and green hat so he could be pulled to safety in case of an emergency.

She wore a green nurse’s uniform at home and filled Matthew’s bedroom with medical supplies and oxygen cylinders – with one expert telling the documentary that the room was ‘like a ward’.

Hayden-Johnson even increased his blood sugar levels so tests would back her claim that he had diabetes.

Together, they met Royal Family members including Camilla, the then-Duchess of Cornwall, who gave him a ‘Children of Courage’ medal, and Sarah Ferguson, then-Duchess of York – as well as a series of other celebrities and the casts of BBC shows Casualty and EastEnders.

Hayden-Johnson also claimed a total of about £130,000 in benefits.

But when Matthew was six, police arrested her after health professionals and school staff met and discussed their concerns.

Following the start of an inquiry, Hayden-Johnson wrongly said she had been raped near her home.

But, just as a suspect was about to be arrested, she confessed it was another lie – and later admitted child cruelty as well as perverting the course of justice over the rape claim.

Police then discovered holiday videos of Matthew on a cruise ship running around in his swimming trunks and eating large meals.

When Hayden-Johnson was arrested, Matthew was initially taken by social services to live with foster carers.

But he was later moved back with his sister Laura to live in Sheffield with their father, a supermarket manager who was initially taken in by his wife’s deception.

Their father soon separated from Hayden-Johnson – who now has a new husband – and does not appear in the documentary.

In the present day, Matthew works in finance and Laura has a job in childcare.

When Hayden-Johnson was jailed aged 35 at Exeter Crown Court for three years and three months, judge Stephen Wildblood told her: ‘There are five adjectives which describe you.

‘Cruel, manipulative, perverse, disordered and pitiful. Your cruel conduct traversed the fundamental rules of nature and nurture.’

Devon and Cornwall Police also said at the time that Hayden-Johnson ‘constantly denied being cruel to her son’ and had never apologised for or explained her actions.

The Press dubbed her Britain’s ‘most evil mother’ – while Detective Constable Mark Uren described her in 2009 as a ‘cruel, manipulative, evil mother who constantly lied to the medical professionals that her son was the sickest child in Britain’.

Hayden-Johnson is one of Britain’s most notable cases of Factitious Disorder Imposed on Another (FDIA) or Fabricated or Induced Illness (FII), formerly known as Munchausen syndrome by proxy.

This is defined by the NHS as a form of child abuse where a parent or carer exaggerates, fabricates or deliberately induces physical or mental health symptoms in a child.

The new programme comes two months after another case of suspected FII was documented by the BBC about Megan Bhari, whose mother helped her fake a brain tumour to con Brits out of £400,000 to pay for trips to Disney World.

The girl founded the Believe in Magic charity aged 16 in 2011 to help ‘other’ children suffering from severe or terminal illnesses, and ran it with her mother Jean O’Brien, 72 – receiving the backing of various music stars.

But Megan died in 2018 from heart failure – which saw an inquest confirm she did not have a brain tumour after all – and investigations later claimed the girl was in fact also a victim after allegedly being duped into believing she was ill by her mother.

‘Love You To Death’ airs on Channel 4 at 9pm on Wednesday night.
