Three members of the same family including a teenage girl have died after being pulled from the water at a British seaside town – with another younger girl fighting for her life. 

Ambulances, two helicopters and coastguards rushed to Shoreham-by-Sea, West Sussex, at 3pm after fishermen reported seeing four people struggling in the water. 

Sussex Police confirmed tonight that a man, a woman and a teenage girl have died. The fourth person, a younger girl, is in a critical condition. All four of those pulled from the water are from the same family. 

A witness said that two children got into difficulty before their parents jumped in the water after them. A fisherman is then understood to have pulled one of the children out before raising the alarm. 

The names of those who died are yet to be released. The family are understood to have relatives who live abroad.

Chief Superintendent James Collis confirmed at a press conference tonight that the coastguard is not searching for anyone else. 

Sussex Police said: ‘Tragically, despite the best efforts of paramedics, three people, a man, a woman, and a teenage girl, were sadly confirmed deceased.

‘A younger girl has been taken to hospital and is in critical condition. We can confirm, all four people were from the same family, and their next of kin have been informed.

‘Specialist officers are supporting them at this incredibly difficult time, and our thoughts are with their family and friends.’ 

An investigation has been launched to understand the circumstances surrounding the tragedy. 

‘At this point, we believe all four entered the water from the land for a swim, and sadly, got into difficulty,’ the force added.

Pictures from the Shoreham seaside showed a huge emergency service response to the incident as eight ambulances parked on the shore beside helicopters.

They remained at the scene, around a 20 minute drive from Brighton, for hours after their 3pm arrival. A police cordon was eventually removed shortly before 9pm.

Road closures had been put in place nearby with the A259 Brighton Road, which runs alongside the beach, blocked in both directions from New Road to Kingston Lane.  

Gary and Victoria Flint took their children to the beach for the day. Victoria, from Horsham, said: ‘We arrived at about three and soon after we heard the siren for the lifeboat.

‘We watched it launch then about 20 mins later, it came back. Ambulances started arriving – more and more of them – then the air ambulances started.’

Another witness told ITV News: ‘I was up near the Coastguard tower when I saw two police officers come past me holding evidence bags after they looked to be going through belongings of, presumably, those who were involved in the incident.’

MP for East Worthing and Shoreham Tom Rutland described the incident as a ‘tragedy’ tonight. 

He said: ‘I am deeply saddened by the tragic news that three people have died following an incident in the water near Shoreham Fort this afternoon. 

‘I spoke earlier with Sussex Police and Shoreham RNLI and have been briefed on the response by the emergency services.

‘My thoughts are with the family and friends of those who have lost their lives, and I know the whole community here in Shoreham will be hoping and praying for the recovery of the young girl receiving medical treatment in hospital.’   

A spokesman from the RNLI said lifeboat crews were launched at around 2.50pm this afternoon.

Two other lifeboats were also launched from the Brighton lifeboat station shortly after 3pm.

The coastguard, meanwhile, said ‘it responded to an incident reported at Shoreham at about 2.45pm’. 

They added: ‘An HM Coastguard helicopter was sent as well as Littlehampton, Shoreham and Newhaven Coastguard Rescue Teams, and an RNLI lifeboat from Shoreham.’ 

Manchester City have suffered a major injury blow in the build-up to Sunday’s Premier League opener at home to Bournemouth with the player set to miss ‘several weeks’

Manchester City have reportedly been hit with a significant injury setback ahead of the new Premier League season with Jeremy Doku ruled out of the opening game against Bournemouth.

Doku was sustained the problem during Sunday’s Community Shield defeat to Arsenal at the Principality Stadium. The Belgian played the first 45 minutes before being substituted at half-time by Jack Grealish.

According to Nieuwsblad, it’s believed that Doku has suffered a calf issue, and while the exact duration of his absence is unclear, he is reportedly set to be out of action for several weeks.

It’s added that Doku’s injury appears to be linked to previous fitness problems, and that there is growing concern within the club that this not an isolated incident. City, according to the report, feel it’s a consequence of his World Cup campaign with Belgium, where he featured in five of their six matches at the tournament.

Before they scored the second goal, we had three, four chances to score and to draw the game.

“Unfortunately we missed the chance, and then with the second goal, it became more difficult. In general I’m always concerned, even when we win.

“This is just the beginning and we have many things we need to do better, but I think it was a good reaction after the first we conceded. Now try to reset, analyse, and think from Tuesday about the next game [against Bournemouth].”

Huntingdonshire District Council approved the four homes at the vacant site despite fears about development in the countryside

Four homes have been approved at a former kennels and cattery despite fears they could “open a floodgate” of development in the countryside.

Plans for five houses at the site off Fenstanton Road near Hilton had been rejected in 2022 for being out of character for the countryside and being in an unsustainable location where residents would need to drive to access services. But the latest plans for four detached four-bedroom bungalows were recommended for approval by Huntingdonshire District Council’s planning officers.

A design and access statement from Twenty Nine Architecture and Planning said the new plan “significantly reduced” the scale of the homes to a “modest single-storey form” more in line with the existing buildings on the site. The former Fields View Kennels and Cattery, which shut in 2020, would be demolished to make way for the homes.

Hilton Parish Council still objected to the new plans and Cllr Peter Balicki spoke on its behalf to the council’s development management committee on Monday, August 17. He said that the last proposal was originally for seven homes before being revised down to six, and finally five.

He said the parish council objected to these from “concern” that if homes were approved on the former agricultural site it would “open a floodgate of applications”.

He said: “It just seems that you can turn the barrel of the kaleidoscope as many times as you like until it falls into place. Now that we’ve gone from seven failed, six failed, five failed – we’ll let permission be given for four”.

James Aldridge, of nearby Alpha Farms, said he was concerned that future residents of the homes could complain about his poultry farm – despite it being there first.

He said: “Our farm is already here and is a working farm – there will naturally be noise, smells, dust, farm vehicles and muck movements. If people move into these houses and then complain about these normal farming activities, could that lead to the council putting restrictions on our farm? We want to know that our farm can continue to operate normally in the future.”

The council’s planning officer said national planning policy states that existing sites “should not have unreasonable restrictions” placed on them as a result of new developments being approved nearby.

An odour assessment also took place, which was not done for the previous application, and officers said they didn’t think odour or noise would negatively impact future residents.

Cllr Alan Hunt, of St Neots Eatons, raised concerns that two parking spaces per home would not be enough and visitors would be forced to park on the road which could lead to a “real highway safety risk”.

The Liberal Democrat councillor said: “From our visit to the site there was nowhere on the side of the road that I felt was actually safe for that kind of parking. It’s a rural road, it’s a 60mph limit and the visibility is not brilliant.”

Cllr Jon Neish said that even though cycle parking would be provided at the homes, they’ll still be largely car dependent as they would be “in the middle of nowhere”.

The Conservative councillor said: “I wouldn’t want to cycle down there – I was lucky I was on a motorbike at the time, so it was two wheels, but it had an engine. I just think it’s a little bit awkward myself and I’ve not been convinced that it actually is the right use for this.”

Cllr Tom Sanderson said that, since the highway authority didn’t object to the plans, it would be “very difficult” for them to refuse based on parking or road safety concerns.

The Liberal Democrat councillor said: “If this went to appeal, the fact is we are in tilted balance – that dreaded phrase. I think if this were to be rejected, it would be very difficult to justify doing so at appeal.”

The application was passed by a single vote with five voting in favour, four against and four abstaining.

The alleged burglary happened at around 4.45am on Monday (August 10) at a home in Ousecliffe Gardens.

It involved the theft of a STIHL-branded chainsaw, strimmer and hedge cutter from a greenhouse.

However, one sewer’s journey came to an end on Tuesday, August 18, as judges Esme Young and Patrick Grant joined host Sophie Willan in announcing the results.

After a series of tense challenges, Minnie was sent home.

“Unfortunately, one of you does have to go home, and the person going home this week is Minnie,” Sophie said.

Bedfordshire mum Minnie was left in tears as she was supported by her co-stars.

Reflecting on her journey on the show, she said: “It’s been really, really nice. I think the best part is meeting all the sewers, and I’ve learnt a lot.”

She continued: “I’m proud of how far I’ve got, it’s been quite the journey. I’m proud and I’m happy, it’s a good place to be,” reports The Mirror.

This week, the sewers were challenged with children’s projects, including a tutu, transforming fleece material into a cuddly toy and designing bespoke costumes for children’s superheroes.

Rebecca’s final piece was crowned Garment of the Week, as she shared: “I’m completely shocked, I was not expecting that. I’m going to take from this week that it’s not over until it’s over. And a bad challenge on day one does not count you out of the race.”

The contestant had previously spoken about her desire to create her own clothing, adapted just for her as she opened up about a health condition.

In a previous episode, she said: “Almost everything I make for myself is adaptive. I have chronic stomach pain, so for me, adaptive fashion is making sure there is nothing tight around my stomach.”

A helicopter landed next to the Shoreham lifeboat station

A major multi-agency response was launched after the alarm was raised shortly before 3pm on Tuesday, August 18.

HM Coastguard confirmed rescue teams, a helicopter, and lifeboat crews were sent to the scene.

Sussex Police and South East Coast Ambulance Service also attended.

The RNLI confirmed Shoreham lifeboat crews had been tasked to assist.

RNLI launch records show Shoreham Harbour lifeboats launched at 2.51pm, while Brighton Lifeboat Station recorded launches at 3.08pm and 3.10pm.

Emergency services are responding to reports that four people are in difficulty in the water off the Sussex coast.

Multiple ambulances and two air ambulances could be seen in Shoreham-by-Sea, West Sussex, near the RNLI station on Tuesday afternoon.

A Sussex Police spokesperson said: “Emergency services are currently responding to reports of four people in difficulty in the water close to Shoreham Fort.

“A section of the A259 in Shoreham has been closed as the incident remains ongoing, and we’re urging the public to stay clear of the area in the meantime

“We will provide more information as soon as we are able to.”

The A259 Brighton Road was blocked in both directions from New Road to Kingston Lane because of the incident.

An RNLI spokesman said: “Shoreham RNLI were tasked by HM Coastguard at approximately 3pm on Tuesday 18 August.”

At the scene an ambulance could be seen leaving under a police escort with blue lights flashing.

MUNICH (AP) — Bayern Munich midfielder Jamal Musiala said he’s dealing with a neurological issue but doing well despite collapsing during a preseason game Tuesday at Heidenheim, three days after a similar incident against Leipzig.

The 23-year-old Germany international went down shortly after entering the friendly as a substitute in the second half. He received medical treatment and was helped as he walked off the pitch.

Musiala had collapsed Saturday during a friendly against Leipzig. German news agency DPA reported that he left the field on his own but still appeared dazed.

Bayern, in its report on Tuesday’s game, only said of the incident: “There was a setback when Jamal Musiala had to be subbed off with a knock minutes after coming on.”

After the game, Musiala posted a message on his Instagram account, explaining that he has suffered “treatable absence seizures” because of a neurological problem.

Musiala said he’s optimistic and receiving excellent medical treatment.

A spokesperson for Air Ambulance Charity Kent Surrey Sussex said both of its helicopters and critical care team had been sent to the scene as part of the response, and Shoreham RNLI said its lifeboat had beencalled out at 15:00 BST.

South East Coast Ambulance Service (Secamb) said it had been called to “reports of four people in need of medical attention”.

A section of the A259 – a main commuter road which runs through Brighton, Shoreham and Worthing – was closed.

BBC reporter Callum French said despite warm weather, sea conditions had been “pretty rough” because of high winds, describing the response as “the biggest turnout [of emergency services] I have seen“.

Witnesses described seeing large numbers of emergency vehicles and helicopters arriving at the seafront.

Resident Shirley Pumfrey said: “I have never seen them do that. The whole road was just full of emergency services.

“It was horrific and quite scary to see that many.”

Steve Chapman, who lives opposite the beach, said he couldn’t get into his road because it was cordoned off.

“There were all sorts of rumours flying around, it was very upsetting,” he said.
