Manchester City have suffered a major injury blow in the build-up to Sunday’s Premier League opener at home to Bournemouth with the player set to miss ‘several weeks’
Manchester City have reportedly been hit with a significant injury setback ahead of the new Premier League season with Jeremy Doku ruled out of the opening game against Bournemouth.
Doku was sustained the problem during Sunday’s Community Shield defeat to Arsenal at the Principality Stadium. The Belgian played the first 45 minutes before being substituted at half-time by Jack Grealish.
According to Nieuwsblad, it’s believed that Doku has suffered a calf issue, and while the exact duration of his absence is unclear, he is reportedly set to be out of action for several weeks.
It’s added that Doku’s injury appears to be linked to previous fitness problems, and that there is growing concern within the club that this not an isolated incident. City, according to the report, feel it’s a consequence of his World Cup campaign with Belgium, where he featured in five of their six matches at the tournament.

Amazon Prime members can watch all four episodes of Pep Guardiola docuseries A Beautiful Obsession, which charts the former manager’s final two seasons at Manchester City, for free when they launch on August 19.
The timing is unfortunate for Enzo Maresca, who is getting prepared for his first Premier League game in charge of City, after replacing Pep Guardiola as the club’s new manager in the summer.
Doku made 47 appearances for City last season, scoring eight goals and assisting 14 times. He helped them win the Carabao Cup before starring in their run to lifting the FA Cup.
City face Bournemouth in their Premier League curtain-raiser on Sunday and they will be looking to bounce back from the three-goal defeat to Arsenal, with Riccardo Calafiori, Kai Havertz, and Martin Odegaard all scoring in a rout for Mikel Arteta’s side in Cardiff.
Speaking post-match, Maresca bemoaned his side’s start to the game, after Calafiori found the net within the first 30 seconds. “I think a big part of the game is in the first goal we conceded unfortunately after 30 seconds,” the Italian said. “The reaction was good. Before they scored the second goal, we had three, four chances to score and to draw the game.
“Unfortunately we missed the chance, and then with the second goal, it became more difficult. In general I’m always concerned, even when we win.
“This is just the beginning and we have many things we need to do better, but I think it was a good reaction after the first we conceded. Now try to reset, analyse, and think from Tuesday about the next game [against Bournemouth].”
